Next, Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche are Stanley Cup champions, but the star has a bit of a diva problem. MacKinnon’s bullying of his teammates on their health choices isn’t the reason the Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup, but it’s clear their hyper-competitive nature is a big drive for this team.

Plus, Hometown Hockey at Sportsnet is no more. What can be done to fill the void left behind and what can Sportsnet and the NHL do to bring in a new generation of hockey fans?

The Colorado Avalanche are your Stanley Cup Champions, and we say goodbye

After defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games, the Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup! It's been a long time coming for a team that's been a favourite over the last few years, but the Avalanche finally got over the hump, with Cale Makar winning the Conn Smythe Trophy.

For the Lightning, it's their third straight year in the final, with 46 playoff wins in that stretch, just two shy of the first threepeat since the New York Islanders of the early 1980's. What is their legacy going to look like? Will they be remembered for having a championship pedigree that refused to die, or for their antics at the end of the game that left a sour taste?

Barry Trotz has announced that he won't be coaching next year, which leaves the Winnipeg Jets a little high and dry. What's next for them, and the multitude of coaching vacancies left?

Maple Leafs fall again, and previewing the 2nd round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Playoff favorites faltering, Barry Trotz’s surprising firing, and Pierre on Pierre violence

The New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, and Calgary Flames are all faltering as the favorites in their first round series. Will the offensive firepower of the Panthers and Flames wake up? And will Igor Shesterkin be able to steal games in net like he used to?

Next, the New York Islanders surprisingly fired head coach Barry Trotz after an unfortunate season that, honestly, isn’t to blame on the head coach. Though Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello isn’t the cutting-edge hockey man he used to be, this move is a real stunner and absolutely gifts a team one of the best head coaches in the NHL.

Plus, the Ottawa Senators fired Pierre McGuire after less than a year working as the team’s senior vice-president of player development. McGuire could very well head back to the broadcasting scene after a likely rift with general manager Pierre Dorion caused the split.

And finally, Andrew and Mary go deep into spoiler territory to discuss Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and their thoughts on the newest Marvel film!

Auston Matthews hit 51 goals in 50 games, so you would assume that would be dominating the conversation when it comes to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but you'd be wrong, because the Maple Leafs kicked a young Canadiens fan out of the game it happened in because Nick Suzuki gave the kid a stick during warmup.

After the Leafs embarrassed themselves with what we all hope was a case of bad miscommunication, Leafs fans went one step further by getting extremely upset that prospect Matthew Knies elected to go back to college instead of joining the Leafs on their playoff run. Is that fanbase okay?

Sidney Crosby just hit 1400 points in his 1100th game, he has a very strong chance of scraping into the top-10 scorers all time by the end of his current contract. With the new hotness of Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews, are we underselling Sid the Kid these days?

Giroux to Florida, Dadonov deal shenanigans, and wrapping up the NHL trade deadline

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke give their thoughts on an exciting 2022 NHL trade deadline. Claude Giroux is no longer the captain of the Philadelphia Flyers, as he’s moved on to greener pastures with the Florida Panthers as they chase a Stanley Cup. Mary reflects on Giroux’s time in Philadelphia as she says her goodbyes after an emotional 1,000th game ceremony.

Next, the NHL trade deadline featured a lot more activity than expected. Marc-Andre Fleury was moved from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Minnesota Wild. The Toronto Maple Leafs added Mark Giordano on defense, forgoing adding depth in goal to add to their blue line. The Colorado Avalanche made smart moves in adding Artturi Lehkonen and Andrew Cogliano, among others, but will it be enough? Oh, and the Pittsburgh Penguins added Rickard Rakell to their lineup as the team goes all-in once more.

Plus, Andrew surprises Mary with the full details of the Evgenii Dadonov trade snafu with the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks. Will this deal be completed after difficulties arose pertaining to Dadonov’s no-trade list or will the Golden Knights suffer consequences for this move?

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has cast a pall over the world at large, with the hockey world also being impacted quite strongly. With Andrew Berkshire unavailable, Sarah Avampato of Locked On Kings joins Mary Clarke for today’s show.

First, the Los Angeles Kings have put themselves in an advantageous position in the Pacific Division to make some noise in the playoffs. Sarah breaks down just why the Kings have been so good this year, from Jonathan Quick in net to new fan-favorite Phillip Danault, and discusses how far Los Angeles can go.

Next, Alex Ovechkin spoke to the media about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Though it was not the answer many were hoping for, hockey journalists were in the right to ask Ovechkin, given his relationship to Vladimir Putin. Not only that, the International Ice Hockey Federation has banned Russia and Belarus from events and has stripped the 2023 World Juniors from the country as well.

On today's episode of the Cross-Check NHL Show, the hosts are breaking down the biggest event of the Olympics so far in the women's hockey gold medal game. Canada proved victorious for the fifth time in six Olympics, but how much of that is due to glaring issues from the American coaching staff?

Habs, Oilers make head coaching changes and Olympic hockey ramps up with playoff round

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke continue to weather their busy schedules amidst a hectic week in hockey! The Montreal Canadiens axed Dominique Ducharme and have brought in Martin St. Louis as their new head coach, hopefully bringing about a new era of change for a stagnant team.

The Beijing Olympics continue apace with the women’s tournament in its playoff rounds after Canada bested the United States 4-2 in the round robin. While the Canadian women are on cruise control, the United States women are having a bit more trouble, only barely just getting past Czechia in the quarterfinals after a stellar performance by their goaltender Klara Peslarova.

Also, the Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Dave Tippett as the team skids out of playoff contention. Tippett, however, is seemingly the fall guy for general manger Ken Holland, whose mismanagement of the Oilers assets continues to harm Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

First, the Anaheim Ducks placed general manager Bob Murray on leave due to an ongoing investigation into his professional conduct. Though the Ducks did the right thing, it is hard to praise them given how hypocritical the NHL has been with other important cases.

Next, the mother of John Doe 2 in the Chicago Blackhawks sexual assault case stepped forward to speak about her son and call out Gary Bettman in a heartbreaking interview. It is past time that Bettman steps down from the NHL, but those set to replace him would only continue to perpetuate hockey culture as we know it.

And finally, Carey Price revealed that substance use was the reason behind him checking into the NHL’s player assistance program only one month ago after posting a courageous message on social media.

Early NHL season chaos reigns; who is dominant and who is already in trouble?
