Anthology Anthology

We're making a horror anthology called GRIND, and we're gonna talk about the process with too much honesty! Along the way we'll talk to filmmakers who have worked on horror anthologies and watch some horror anthologies too. Is it Project Greenlight for podcasts?! Is that interesting?! Maybe?! I don't know! But it's definitely going to be an Anthology Anthology.

Brea Journeys to the Twilight Zone!

Brea has barely seen the original Twilight Zone-- and it's time to rectify that! We start Rod Serling's classic series at the beginning with the great pilot "Where is Everybody?" and then watch two lesser episodes "One for the Angels" and "Mr. Denton on Doomsday". What did we learn from this classic series? Are we any closer to finishing GRIND? Does Ed love his baby yet? Find out all of this and more on this week's episode!

Writer/Director/Producer/Editor Mike Mendez (BIG ASS SPIDER, DON'T KILL IT) just finished editing a segment of GRIND and I thought what better way to celebrate than to get him on the podcast for a wide-ranging discussion of his epic career! Mike's been involved in three-- now FOUR!-- anthologies and is a legend in the horror world. He's also edited on "Beavis and Butthead" and tons of different projects. We really get into the nitty gritty of the life of an indie filmmaker. He has seen it all and this is a great talk!

Follow Mike on instagram: @madmanmendez

Anthony Cousins Drops By to Talk FROGMAN 2, the Oscar Nominations, and the Worst Videos in the World!

We're joined by director Anthony Cousins again for an unconventional episode that will take you inside the process of making GRIND-- perhaps too inside?! One of the segments features a content moderator driven mad by the horrible videos he sees. Anthony's creating these videos for us, and we brainstorm them live on the air. So it does get a little dark! But also just lots of fun chat about the filmmaking process in general and what's up next for the lord of the bog Frogman!

This week's episode (delayed by the fires!) is a request we got from a listener somewhere along the way. Well, you asked for it, and now we have become the Bishop of Battle! Is there anything educational about this TV pilot gone theatrical? Why does that rat have psychic powers?
It's Never Too Late to Change Film Careers (with Robert Bella!)

In 1997 Robert Bella was the toast of Sundance with his debut film COLIN FITZ LIVES! He was followed around the fest by the TV show 48 Hours, who thought he might be The Next Big Thing. But when he struggled to make his second film, he stumbled into the world of post-production supervising, eventually working for Steven Spielberg. Then he walked away from it all to chase his dream of being a TV writer, eventually getting staffed on several shows. And THEN he became a tv director. And THEN he's been transitioning all the way back to indie film. Robert's journey is both inspiring and a fascinating portrait of the film industry over the years!

Follow Bella on instagram! @brooklynboybella

This wide-ranging talk gets into Marc's journey from journalist to filmmaker, Tiffany's evolution as an actress, and a ton of other interesting topics. But most importantly-- give to the kickstarter!! There's only a week left!! Link in the show notes below.</itunes:summary>

Old Chief Wood'nhead. The Lake Blob. The Extremely Persistent Hitchhiker. This is the second podcast we've done on this movie for both of us, and I swear I know these villains better than I know my own family. This anthology isn't perfect, but there's a lot to like-- namely the much-praised "The Raft", which many consider the best Creepshow segment overall. This is an interesting anthology for us to dissect cause the flaws are very very obvious. Will we learn from (checks notes) Michael Gornick's mistakes?!?! <itunes:summary>Rebekah McKendry is a director, podcaster, and a film professor at USC! She's also one of the first people we spoke to before embarking on this quest, so this is us coming full circle. What can we say about Rebekah? She is completely brilliant and you'll learn a lot from this conversation. We know we did! She's not only a great filmmaker who debuted with the xmas horror anthology ALL THE CREATURES WERE STIRRING, she somehow knows every horror film ever made. Seriously what a guest with a great take on getting a feature made. </itunes:summary>

There will be funny stories, controversial statements, interpersonal conflict, and tips and tricks for becoming a better director! Anthony Cousins was our key grip on GRIND and MLM and directed the found footage horror film FROGMAN as well as segments of SCARE PACKAGE 1 & 2. He talks about his run of viral shorts that put him on the map and a whole bunch of other great filmmaking topics. Next up is an interview with Austin music legend Thor Harris, who acts in Brea's segment DELIVERY. Ed talked to Thor during the shoot about a wide range of topics including the movie GRIND, the Austin music scene, and the coast of Texas (I'd intended to do what Brea did and interview everyone, but it was harder cause we were always shifting locations!)</itunes:summary>

We Watched Twilight Zone: The Movie

Ed returns as we discuss the classic anthology film TWILIGHT ZONE (THE MOVIE). Which segments succeed and which segment fails so hard that people die?! Well you probably already know the answer to that one, but we think this is a fun episode with an unusually large (for us) amount of research behind it. It's one we recorded before production, so you might get the sense it's in the past. Because it is! We'll be back next week with a post-mortem on the shoot. Thank you to all the people who sent crafty supplies for the shoot. It honestly doesn't even make sense mathematically. THANK YOU! Theme song by Matt Glass (@glassbrain), Artwork by Felipe Sobreiro

<itunes:summary>In our last installment of Brea's on set interview quadrilogy, she talks to "Union Meeting" stars Ify Nwadiwe (host of Um, Actually on Dropout) and Aubrey Shea (Jem and the Holograms, Unconventional.) Lots of great talk about building fully-realized characters and life on set and the current state of indie filmmaking. Both of these interviews are pretty fascinating! And I can say that cause this is Ed writing this and not Brea praising herself. We've just wrapped the film and will be back for a post-mortem episode next week! </itunes:summary>

We Watched Tales From the Crypt (1972)

So from time to time we will watch horror anthologies and learn what we can. We started with the classic TALES FROM THE CRYPT, as recommended by our first guest-- Ryan Spindell! Did we love it as much as he does? Spoiler-- no we did not. But it was still fun. And this was a fun episode. We're deep in production so this is one we had in the can. On Friday we'll have an episode live from set. But until then-- enjoy our first horror anthology movie review!!!
