Anthony Dyer is a United States Air Force veteran who served as a Combat Special Missions Aviator for two decades plus. He flew high-risk missions in some of the world’s most dangerous war zones and when he came home to retire, he found the transition back to non-military life a struggle. To put it bluntly, Anthony spiraled into a very dark place. But from that very same place, he found his voice in the form of taking pen to paper, writing it all down, releasing it all in the process. He's now an author and mental health advocate, using his life experience to help others. As he writes in his novel, Moon Child: A Memoir: “You can train for combat, but not what comes after.” Good side note: We recorded this episode on Veteran's Day - which was not planned but turned out to be the perfect time to do it. Abi Murray invites us to a cup of coffee and a nice conversation care of the Chatty Cafe Scheme. This all began on a typical wet and windy UK day when Abi's sister Alex Hoskyn was in a supermarket café with her four month old son, who wasn't great company, and she herself was feeling a bit tired and a bit fed up. Alex looked around the cafe and saw others who looked just as down as she felt herself and she started to think about the positive impact we can have on one another simply by sitting together and communicating. She knew from her own experience that when you are feeling lonely, a short conversation with another human can really brighten your day. It was in that very moment her ‘Chatter & Natter’ table idea began (in her head where all dreams do) and it soon became reality. Maya Brattkus wanted to give her friend who lost her home in the LA fires a gift to comfort her and help her through her grief. What she didn't realize is that her art would touch so many people in need as well. So she started drawing the houses and businesses that were lost in the Eaton and Palisades fires to raise awareness and support for strangers she had never met, ones who had lost so much. And that's how her Lost Home Project began. And it's still going. Maya's goal is to collect as many drawings of these houses, along with the stories behind them, to compile into a book to pay tribute to her community. They say art heals people. Connor along with his nana, Sharon Marrama, started creating Covid Care Packages filled with activities and comfort items and delivered them to children in their community that were sick or in isolation from Covid. From there, Connor and Sharon worked on a few other projects including compiling self-care baskets for the healthcare workers at Boston area hospitals, held a clothing and essentials drive to benefit another nonprofit, Catie’s Closet and collaborated with Birthday Wishes to build and delivered 42 “birthday-in-a-box” for children in shelters. Since then, the kindness-doing-duo have helped over 10,000 kids embrace and spread kindness thru their special school project as well as corporate kindness for companies.
