The Right to Shower

Access to cleanliness is a human right, but for those living on the streets, it’s never that simple. Daily hygiene is not only an ongoing challenge for people experiencing homelessness, but a major roadblock to the things we take for granted like social acceptance, health, access to the job market, mental wellbeing, and more.
The feeling of cleanliness goes beyond just a physical feeling. It can bring people joy, hope, strength, and a sense of dignity they may have lost along the way.

Join us as we pull back the curtain on the intricacies around homelessness and cleanliness. We’ll break down biases, come to new understandings about, and share intimate stories from our unhoused communities. On The Right To Shower, we talk to NGO and business leaders, politicians, experts, and our unhoused neighbors and friends, in order to understand the change even a single shower can make in someone’s life.

Welcome back to The Right to Shower, where we believe access to cleanliness is a fundamental human right. Mona Jenkins, Director of Development and Operations at the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition, joins Darius Baxter this week to speak about how anyone and everyone can get involved. Mona talks about growing up in a community where everyone looked out for one another, and how that drives the work she does today at the Coalition and beyond. The pair speak about some stereotypes held against those experiencing homelessness, as well as the reality of increased housing costs pushing people out of their homes. Mona explains the importance of person-first language and the role communities have in combating homelessness. Together, Mona and Darius talk about the steps anyone can take to get involved and help build a greater sense of community wherever they live.

Cleanliness is a fundamental right and no one should ever feel like they don’t have access to a way to get clean.

Welcome to The Right To Shower, where we believe access to cleanliness is a fundamental human right. Joining Darius Baxter this week to speak about the physical and psychological effect of a shower is Dr. Jim Withers and Dr. Liz Frye from the Street Medicine Institute.
How Showers Are Providing More Than Just Cleanliness

It’s time for another episode of The Right to Shower, where we believe access to cleanliness is a fundamental human right. This week Darius Baxter is joined by none other than the CEO of Lava Mae X, Kris Kepler. Together the duo touch on a multitude of topics including the initiatives that charity partners and non-government organizations are putting forward to actively fight and combat the effects of homelessness and provide cleanliness to those who need it. Listen as the two discuss the real impacts both cleanliness and a shower can have not only on a person's mental health but emotional health too. Hear first hand some of Kris’ experiences seeing the impact of the Shower Service in Oakland, California and give us a little bit of insight into Lava Mae X’s Radical Hospitality approach. Learn about the power of a mobile shower and why it is the best way to provide cleanliness (vs building public shower structures etc). Cleanliness is a fundamental right and no one should ever feel like they don’t have access to a way to get clean. To learn more about opportunities to volunteer or donate please visit https://www.therighttoshower.com/. Please also consider buying our shower products on our website or through Amazon. Every soap you buy and shower you take, helps us bring showers to the streets.

Follow Us

Facebook @TheRightToShower

Instagram @therighttoshower

Presented by The Right to Shower
https://www.therighttoshower.com/

Why Access to Cleanliness is a Human Right

Welcome to The Right to Shower, where we believe access to cleanliness is a human right. For our first episode, allow us to introduce ourselves. Today, we discuss who we are, why we do what we do, why we focus on cleanliness, and what makes showers such an amazing catalyst for change. Joining us for the conversation is Social Entrepreneur and Founder of LavaMaeˣ, Doniece Sandoval and CMO for The Uncovery at Unilever and Co-Founder of The Right to Shower, Laura Fruitman. Listen as host Darius Baxter, President and CEO of GOODProjects, leads discussions on why cleanliness can often be overlooked as a crucial factor in physical and mental well-being, where traditional resources for unhoused individuals can sometimes fall short, and how anybody listening can easily get involved.

We’re excited to kick off this season of The Right to Shower!
