Today we bring you the very twisted Roger Kibbe, the I-5 Strangler. What’s interesting here is that there is a very long period of time where Kibbe seems to simply disappear before he reappears with a horrific murderous frenzy. The question for law enforcement has always been: how many victims did he have during that “dark period” – for all we know, given the mind-blowing rate of his murders once he re-surfaced, he could very well be CA’s most prolific serial killer. What we do know is that during the 1980s the I-5 Freeway around Sacramento was his very literal hunting ground. He narrowly slipped away from the cops twice, using his unsuspecting cop brother to try and evade detection and it even took the advent of DNA testing for him to finally admit to more than one murder. Q usually likes to find something interesting in each killer but here there was nothing but a monster whose evil deeds were visited on him in the end.

How a softcore porn soundtrack composer, teamed up with the “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly” movie theme whistler, get a boost from a comedian from the ’40s, and then get boosted by The Muppets to create one of the greatest earworms… EVER. And as earworm-y as the song is… its creator had zero idea of what he had created. Back in the 1960s pornography was illegal in most of the world so creative people made “nature documentaries'' featuring nudists, among other things, and “Viva la Sauna Svedese” or “Hooray for the Swedish Sauna” was written by Italian composer Piero Umilani for a 30-second clip of Swedish women walking into a sauna. He then threw it into a file of the music he had created for the movie and sold it to a company that wanted U.S. rights. He had so little regard for it he didn’t even note its inclusion, and that’s where its crazy journey to becoming the greatest earworm of all time takes off!

At the beginning of 1976 Dog Day Afternoon was the #1 movie, Gerald Ford was President and the Pittsburgh Steelers were about to beat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X. By the end of 1976 it was all about Charlie's Angels, JAWS, and a live double-album by a relatively unknown guitarist, “Frampton Comes Alive”. Peter Frampton was seen as a guitar virtuoso in the music scene, but he had never had a hit to speak of. However, his guitar virtuosity, teen idol looks, and constant touring for 5 years made both his band super tight and his live performances incredibly popular. With no hits and only a cult-like following his label took a leap and decided to release a live double album - and that album absolutely captured the American zeitgeist. It was everywhere you went in 1976, absolutely inescapable. It became the greatest-selling live album of all time and the number-one album of the year. But how? Well, it's a really interesting story. But this forgotten story is more complicated than it seems, with multiple trials, a mysterious brother, cries of racism, and a defense attorney more interested in a book deal than his client, it's a case for the ages. But after sifting through the plethora of evidence - even a retired homicide detective thinks the case is a little weak.

In this episode of Polticialish we shine a spotlight on the Land Park Massacre, an unsolved, brutal triple homicide of the Jacobs family that disappeared from the news because of the start of the first Gulf War. Q sets up the story with Retired Sacramento Police Detective John Cabrera. First they discuss Dec. Cabrera’s background and how the Golden State Killer changed the way people in Sacramento lived. Then we set up the background for the crime itself by focusing on six “characters,” the neighborhood, victim Mick Jacobs, petty criminal Ricky McCarthy, victims Marcie and Jennifer Jacobs, and the last “character,” a safe of Ricky McCarthy’s that was fatefully at the Jacobs house. Politicalish welcomes a great historian of California politics: Alex Vassar. He and Q have a fascinating discussion of California legislative history. But don’t think it’s dry and boring! Part one is filled with duels and violence, along with details of early CA politics. Redistricting is a contentious topic, but in the 1860s it led to a stabbing on the floor of the Assembly. We get stories from both Alex and Q about prolific CA historian Dr. Kevin Starr. Then they discuss how different politics was in the late 1800s, with massive turnover, non-professional politicians, completely different political power bases, and how one dude organized all CA law and had more impact than any other legislator in early CA.
