They started calling themselves The Light Brigade and soon, they'd made the First Presbyterian Church mad at them. So they broke off. Soon, reports of child abuse, extreme control, racism and homophobia were coming from inside the cult. They ran away to Vermont but things only got worse there. This is the kind of story that keeps me up at night. We know people murder for money, for sex, for revenge, but somehow it is more horrifying when a random murder is committed against people who are totally and completely innocent. Clinton and Cristen Brink planned a fun day hiking in Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas. While enjoying their afternoon, a man jumped out and began stabbing Clinton. Cristen saved the girls by shielding them with her body and telling them to run. She then turned back to help her husband. She too was stabbed to death. A manhunt ensued and Andrew James McGann, a 28 year old elementary school teacher was arrested. Who is this person? Why did he do this? We will have to wait for the trial for any possible answers. For now, he sits in prison accused of a horrific double murder

Roch Thériault, who later claimed he was Moses and then changed his name to Rock believed he was chosen by God to do a great and important work. He gathered a small group of followers and took them into the Canadian wilderness. As his followers worked to build a small commune, one day Rock said, "you look like ants on a hill." So the group became known as The Ant Hill Kids. Rock began to drink and soon, he was inflicting horrific torture and abuse on his followers. The authorities got involved and removed all the children from the cult so Rock picked up and moved to another state. The abuse continued and even got worse until not even the most devout followers could take it any longer. This is a dark episode and one in which many forms of abuse are mentioned. Of all the cults I've covered, this is one of the worst stories so listen with caution

Then Bernice Novack was attacked in her driveway one night and killed. Not long after that, Benji was attacked as well in a gruesome torture murder that left him with his eyes gouged out. The police didn't have to look too far to find a suspect. The killer was in their own circle

Linda Cougat, Eula Kay Miller, Ruth Maynard, Gloria Sue Green, Nix as she was called, and others turned up bound, raped and murdered in the late 1960s and early 1970s near Odessa, Texas. The police were stumped and then, they got a phone call from Aztec, New Mexico. Johnny Edwards, a man who had been interviewed in the case was sitting in jail there and telling tales of murder. Many years ago, I was very fascinated with the TV show Forensic Files and all of the new science that was being shown to the public for the first time. As I watched the story of this murder, I learned about how blood spatter analysis helps solve crimes and helps catch killers. When Karen Pannell is found murdered, with the name Roc written above her on the wall in her own blood, the police think they have their killer: Karen's ex-boyfriend Roc Herpich but forensic scientists make a discover that will change the course of the case and it all has to do with dry time on blood spatter. This was breaking science back in 2003 and remains fascinating even today.

I want to give all the credit for today's episode to John Williams (not his real name) and Joshua Kaplan, who published this article in ProPublica. You can read the story on that website. When John Williams realized he had used his wilderness expert training to assist a dangerous militia, he was angry. Then, after witnessing the violence during the insurrection, John decided he had to do something about it. He created a fake personal and went undercover without telling a single person. He quickly rose through the ranks to become Utah's highest ranking militia leader and was then put in touch with leaders of the Oath Keepers. John is now in hiding but he is not finished. He plans to continue releasing documents exposing the dangerous acts and threats made by these extremist groups

The girls, Trisha and Linae are then abducted and forced to drive the killers away on snowmobiles but the killers are not aware, Rolfe Tiede is not dead, just badly injured. This father and hero, bleeding, burned, and blind jumped on a snowmobile and followed them, determined to save his girls. The authorities are alerted and what follows is a police chase and car crash

This is the story of the Hi-Fi Shop Murders which took place in Ogden, Utah on April 22, 1974. United States Air Force soldiers William Andrews and Dale Selby Pierre went into the store with the intention of robbing it. They were not expecting people to enter the shop during the robbery or that the parents of the employees would come looking for their children. Soon, they had five hostages in the basement of the store. The hostages were forced to drink Drano, a caustic substance for unclogging drains. When the Drano didn't kill the hostages, Pierre shot each of them. Courtney Naisbitt and Orren Walker lived but sadly, Stanley Walker, Sherry Michelle Ansley and Carol Naisbitt did not. We talk about the investigation and George Throckmorton whose tactics ensured the killers would be caught as well as what happened to the survivors. Both killers got the death penalty

John Douglas, the father of profiling, is brought in and the FBI begins to aid in the investigation. John Douglas' profile is so detailed and so spot on, it's chilling. He even predicts that the killer will have a stutter, which Robert Hansen did. A devoted cop named Greg Baker is convinced that Robert Hansen is the killer and he continues to investigate. When the police finally get a search warrant, they find all the gruesome evidence they need, hiding in Robert Hansen's house

Son of Sam: A serial killer terrorizes 1970s New York City

The Son of Sam case refers to a series of shootings that took place in New York City during the summer of 1976 and into 1977. The killer, who became known as the "Son of Sam," was David Berkowitz. He murdered six people and wounded seven others, primarily targeting young couples parked in cars.

Donna Laurie, Jody Valenti, Carl Denaro, Rosemary Keenan, Donna DeMasi, Joanne Lomino, Christine Freund, John Diel, Virginia Voskerichian, Alexander Esau, Valentina Suriani, Salvatore Lupo, Judy Placido, Stacy Moskowitz, and Robert Violante all lost their lives at the hands of this maniac.

Berkowitz taunted police and the public through letters he sent to the press, signing them as "Son of Sam." His letters included bizarre claims about being commanded to kill by a demon dog, which added to the panic and media frenzy surrounding the case.

The investigation was intense, and Berkowitz was eventually apprehended on August 10, 1977, after police traced a parking ticket to his car. He confessed to the murders and was convicted, receiving multiple life sentences. His case raised discussions about mental health, media influence, and public safety, making it one of the most infamous criminal cases in American history. Berkowitz has since claimed to have found religion and has expressed remorse for his actions

Today we are discussing the murder of Johnny Altinger and the attack of Gilles Tetreault who were both lured by Mark Twitchell posing as a woman on dating apps. The men thought they were going to meet a woman for the first time. Instead, they were attacked upon entering Mark's rented garage where he used a stun baton and a plastic gun on them. One man was lucky enough to get away. The other was not. Mark was a huge Star Wars fan and professional film maker who also loved the TV show Dexter. When Johnny Altinger disappears, his family files a missing persons report and inside the garage he was last known to have been at, the police find a large pool of blood someone has attempted to clean up. Then they go through Mark's laptop and find a deleted file called SK Confessions. In this deleted file, they realize, Mark is telling his own story written as a movie script. This leads them to the discovery that a victim has escaped but failed to inform the police. They seek the public's help and Gilles Tetreault comes forward to share his terrifying story. The police are finally able to locate Johnny Altinger and when they do, they cannot believe what has been done to him

Christmas Killing Spree: The Devils of Dayton

We discuss the killing spree that occurred over Christmas in 1992. Six murders were committed by a group of teenagers who were bored. They shot people randomly on the streets and stole their sneakers. They robbed a neighborhood grocery store, murdered the clerk and wounded a customer. They got only forty four dollars for her life. They shot and killed one of the gang member's ex boyfriends and then went back and murdered two of his friends, dumping their bodies in a gravel pit. The police were on a skeleton crew because of the holiday but soon, it was all hands on deck. Body after body was discovered and the police realized they had a very serious problem on their hands. When the group is caught, one of the gang members wants a shootout with the police, but thankfully that did not happen. At trial, the group leader, Marvallous Keene is sentenced to death. He is executed in 2009.

They gather a small following and before long, as in all cults, everything gets dark. Children are horrifically abused. Women are treated like cattle. Fire and brimstone reign down from Yisrayll's pulpit and he begins making predictions about the end of the world. He steals money, he starves his followers, he abuses everyone involved and then the authorities get involved.

Then Ashley found out she was pregnant and decided she wanted nothing to do with Doug. She starts making all kinds of accusations against her new husband and then, it all ends in tragedy.

Jack was then hired by an Austrian magazine to fly to America and write a story on crime in Los Angeles. He checked into the infamous Hotel Cecil and then, Los Angeles cops began finding dead prostitutes on Skid Row.

When Ethan Walton and Amanda Burney went to sell a piece of land to Glen Gouker they had no way of knowing they were walking into a trap. Ethan is attacked and Amanda is captured and assaulted. This story could easily be a horror film. When Amanda is tied up in a bedroom, she finds a way to free herself and she makes one of the most daring escape attempts I've ever heard of. There are several heroes in this story and several victims. It's a tragic tale of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could happen to any one of us.

The documents are all fake and the forger, Mark Hofmann, is in a lot of trouble and he knows it. So he decides to create a diversion. Bombs start going off throughout Salt Lake City and people are dying. And then, Mark himself is blown up.

The service is still active but there is one profile that is glaring absent from the choice of gigolos for hire, that of Ash Armand. Ash Armand joined Cowboys for Angels and quickly became the most sought after gigolo in Las Vegas. The TV show only made him more famous. Then he started dating a very well known Las Vegas influencer name Toochi Kash. Things were going great for Ash Armand who billed himself as a sexual guru with a spiritual side. But then, everything began to change. Ash finds himself in a very dark place, fired from his agency and dumped by his girlfriend. He decides to return to his roots, once again becoming a "spiritual guru." A very nice young woman named Herleen Dulai hires Ash to help guide her through a difficult time in her life. She had no way of knowing that decision would instead end her life.

Grave robbing went out of fashion a hundred years ago but the demand for human corpses is now higher than ever. Michael knew, he could use his skills to harvest bone and tissue and sell it to the highest bidder. Before long, he was making millions and the greed took over. He and his team began employing more and more unethical, illegal, and disturbing tactics to get a hold of the bone and tissue that was making them so much money. It all came tumbling down when one of the funeral homes was sold and the new owners could not believe what they found in the basement of their new business.

Maybe you've seen the movie, but are you aware of the controversy surrounding it? A Utah Mormon man named Tim Ballard has conned millions of dollars from good hearted people who want to help end child trafficking. The Mormon Church has formally denounced this man and there is very serious and real evidence that he has engaged in criminal activity including the sexual assault of women he worked with. This scandal is so big, it brought down the Utah State Attorney General, Sean Reyes. Operation Underground Railroad, the organization that Tim Ballard founded, has kicked him out entirely and is now working to distance itself from him altogether. Powerful Mormon leaders are scrambling to repair their public image after associating with Tim Ballard but most importantly, this entire situation has damaged the cause, the very real cause of breaking up child and sex trafficking rings. This will be a Part One as the story, and the litigation Tim Ballard is involved in is still ongoing.
