INCARNATION | Selected Scriptures

Our faith is dependent upon understanding the person of Jesus Christ.

In this message from selected Scriptures, we begin a series focused on the person and work of Christ as we enter the Christmas season. The key question is simple but essential: Who is the baby in the manger?

True saving faith rests not merely on sincerity, but on the correct object of that faith. Jesus is fully God and fully man. He is the eternal Word who became flesh, the exact representation of the Father’s nature, the Creator and Sustainer who humbled Himself in the incarnation. Without a divine Savior, there is no salvation.

This text calls us to understand, confess, and commit ourselves to the biblical Jesus—not a Jesus of our own making—so that our faith is both correct and strengthened.

Preached by Rodney Brown Jr. at Rhome Bible Church

ACTS 9:1-19 | A Chosen Instrument

God grants sight to the blind and commissions them to take light into a dark world.

In this message from Acts 9:1-19, we step aside from Exodus for one week to examine Saul’s conversion on the Damascus road. The fire-breathing Pharisee who was breathing threats and murder against the disciples is sovereignly stopped by Jesus Himself, struck blind, and then given both physical and spiritual sight. God not only saves this foremost of sinners—He commissions him as a chosen instrument to take the light of the gospel into a dark world.

This text reminds us that every true conversion follows the same pattern: we were headed in the wrong direction, God apprehended us by His grace, He opened our eyes, and He put us into service. We who once were blind now see—and we are sent to take that light to others.

EXODUS 12:29-41 | You’re Fired!

Believers commit to worship our great God because He sovereignly redeems, blesses, and sustains us.

In this message from Exodus 12:29-41, the tenth plague strikes at midnight. Pharaoh, broken and defeated, finally issues an unconditional surrender and drives Israel out in haste. What looks like a sudden “you’re fired” moment for the Israelites is actually the culmination of God’s perfect, sovereign plan.

God not only redeems His people—He richly blesses them with silver and gold from the Egyptians and sustains them for the journey ahead. The proper response is not pride or self-congratulation, but committed gratitude and wholehearted worship of the God who alone orchestrates every detail of our redemption.

EXODUS 12:1-13 | Remember Our Redemption

God wants His children to remember their redemption so they will identify with Him and proclaim Him throughout the generations.

In this message from Exodus 12:1-13, God institutes the Passover. He gives Israel a new calendar centered on their deliverance, detailed instructions for selecting and sacrificing an unblemished lamb, and the command to apply its blood so the destroyer would pass over. Every detail is designed so that God’s people would remember their redemption, identify with Him, and pass the story on to their children and grandchildren.

This text is rich with typology. The perfect, set-apart lamb points forward to Christ—the true Passover Lamb whose blood alone secures our redemption. Believers are called to remember, identify, and proclaim.

EXODUS 12:14-38 | Matza Memories

God commands His children to remember their salvation through regular celebration and education.

In this message from Exodus 12:14-38, God establishes the Feast of Unleavened Bread as a permanent ordinance. Right after the Passover, Israel is commanded to celebrate this week-long feast of matza so that the memory of their deliverance will not fade. Through intentional celebration and the education of the next generation, God’s people are to keep the reality of their salvation alive.

This text reminds us that we are a forgetful people. God graciously gives us tangible ways—celebration, symbols, and teaching—to remember what He has done so that gratitude and faithfulness do not leak from our minds.

EXODUS 11:1-10 | Payday Has Arrived

Believers gratefully give God glory for their redemption and blessing.

In this message from Exodus 11:1-10, the final plague is announced: the death of the firstborn. Payday has arrived for Egypt’s stubborn rebellion against Yahweh. At the same time, God gives His people favor in the sight of the Egyptians so they will leave with silver and gold—plundering their former oppressors.

This text calls God’s people to stop and give Him grateful glory. The same God who judges the hard-hearted also redeems and richly blesses His own. Our proper response is worship and thanksgiving for both the redemption and the blessing He has accomplished for His glory.

EXODUS 10:1-20 | Locust Storybook Hour

God wants His children to know how He made a mockery of the Egyptians, so they will know He is the Lord and tell their children and grandchildren.

In this message from Exodus 10:1-20, the plague of locusts is not only an act of judgment on Egypt—it is a story God wants His people to remember and retell. Yahweh hardens Pharaoh’s heart so that His signs may be performed and His glory displayed, making a mockery of Egypt’s power and gods. The purpose is clear: that Israel would know the Lord and pass the knowledge of His mighty acts to the next generations.

This text calls us to the same responsibility—remembering God’s power in judgment and redemption, and faithfully teaching it to our children and grandchildren so that they too may know that He is the Lord.

God wants His children to know that there is no one like Him so they will proclaim His Name through all the earth.

In this message from Exodus 9:13-35, the plague of hail—mixed with fire and more severe than anything Egypt had ever seen—puts God’s unmatched power on full display. Yahweh turns up the volume so that both Pharaoh and His own people will realize there is no one like Him.

This text is meant to produce two things in God’s people: a deep realization of His supreme power, and the resulting proclamation of His name. When we truly grasp the greatness of our God, we cannot remain silent.

EXODUS 9:1-7 | Lord of our Livelihood

God judges glory hoarding but protects the livelihood of His own.

In this message from Exodus 9:1-7, the plague on the livestock reveals both the severity of God’s judgment and the precision of His care. While Egypt’s animals are struck, the livestock of Israel in Goshen are completely spared. Yahweh alone is Lord over livelihood, provision, and every resource we depend on.

This text confronts our tendency to place security in possessions, portfolios, or structures, and calls us to trust the God who both judges those who steal His glory and faithfully protects His people.

EXODUS 8:1-15 | Not Even Close

Our trust should be in God alone as there is no one like Him.

In this message from Exodus 8:1-15, the second plague of frogs reveals a simple but profound truth: there is no one like the Lord our God. While Pharaoh’s magicians can imitate the sign in a limited way, they cannot reverse it or compete with Yahweh’s power. The gap between the Creator and every created thing—including Egypt’s gods—is not even close.

This text calls us to examine where we place our trust. When nothing else even comes close to the greatness of God, our confidence, security, and worship must rest in Him alone.

SELECTED SCRIPTURES | Rise Up and Fight

n a culture that increasingly hates biblical truth, the church cannot remain silent.

In this message from selected Scriptures, Pastor Rodney addresses recent acts of violence and the growing hostility toward those who stand for Christ. Drawing from the example of faithful witnesses who refused to stay quiet, he calls believers to reject worldly wisdom, stop making excuses, and rise up to speak the gospel with clarity, courage, and kindness.

This is a timely call to make our lives count—not by seeking comfort or avoiding conflict, but by loving people enough to tell them the truth, even when it costs us.

EXODUS 6:28 - 7:7 | The Hand of God Motivates the Feet of Men

Because God effects the success of the mission, He expects simple obedience from His messengers.

In this message from Exodus 6:28–7:7, Moses once again offers excuses about being unskilled in speech. God responds by reminding him that the outcome does not depend on Moses’ ability, but on the mighty hand of the Lord. Success in God’s mission is not measured by visible results, but by faithful obedience—simply putting one foot in front of the other and trusting God for the rest.

This text calls us away from pragmatic self-reliance and toward confident, steady obedience, knowing that the same God who commands the mission also guarantees its success.

EXODUS 7:8-13 | As the Lord had Said

God is sovereign and victorious, despite living in a worldly battle that looks otherwise.

In this message from Exodus 7:8-13, God gives Moses and Aaron a clear sign to perform before Pharaoh: the staff that becomes a serpent. When Pharaoh’s magicians appear to match the miracle, Aaron’s staff swallows theirs—demonstrating that Yahweh alone is the true and sovereign God.

This text reminds us that God’s Word never fails and that His victory is certain, even when the battle is still raging and the outcome is not yet fully visible. Believers can take comfort and stand firm, knowing the outcome is already secured by the hand of the Lord.

In this message from Exodus 6:13-27, what looks like a simple list of names is actually a powerful reminder of God’s meticulous sovereignty. Through this genealogy, Moses establishes the credibility of the Levitical priesthood and shows that God has been carefully directing family lines, births, and history itself so that true worship can take place.

Far from being filler, this passage comforts God’s people with the truth that nothing is random. The Lord works through ordinary generations to fulfill His purposes and bring about the worship He requires.

EXODUS 5:1-23 | Shooting the Messenger

Rejection is an inevitable part of faithfully proclaiming the gospel—but how we respond to rejection reveals where our trust is placed.

In this message from Exodus 5, Rodney C. Brown Jr. examines Moses and Aaron’s encounter with Pharaoh and the discouragement that followed. When the mission becomes difficult and the expected results do not come, the temptation is to quit. Yet God’s people are called to persevere, trusting that the mission is moving forward according to God’s sovereign plan and promises.

Rejection is not ultimately about us. It is a reminder that we are messengers participating in God’s work. Our calling is not to control the response, but to faithfully preach, pray, serve, and remain steadfast—even when we do not see the results we hoped for.

How do we respond when obedience brings rejection? By cultivating contentment in God’s sovereign will and continuing faithfully in the mission He has given us.

God’s sovereignty is seen not only in where He sends us, but in every step He orders along the way.

In this message from Exodus 4:18–31, we continue following Moses as he begins the journey back to Egypt. What may appear to be unexpected obstacles and circumstances are all under the sovereign direction of God, who faithfully accomplishes His purposes through His people. Moses’ journey reminds us that God’s calling does not remove difficulty, but His sovereignty assures us that no part of the journey is outside His control.

What gives us confidence when the gospel is met with rejection?

In this message from Exodus 6:9–13, Rodney C. Brown Jr. reminds us that the confidence of the believer does not rest in our ability to convince others, but in the authority of the God who has given us the message. Just as Moses was commissioned to speak on behalf of God, we have been entrusted with the gospel and sent with a message backed by divine authority.

Through the promises God gives to His people in Exodus 6, we are reminded of His covenant faithfulness—He is our God, our Deliverer, our Father, and the One who gives us an inheritance. Even rejection cannot thwart His sovereign purposes. In fact, God sovereignly uses the rejection of His message to accomplish His purposes and display His glory through both justice and mercy.

The calling is not to carry the burden of convincing people. Our responsibility is to faithfully deliver the message, trusting the God who sovereignly fulfills His mission.

God does not excuse our weakness, but He faithfully equips His servants to accomplish His purposes.

In this message from Exodus 4:10-17, Moses continues to resist God’s call, expressing fear that he is not capable of speaking to Pharaoh and the people of Israel. Rather than trusting in God’s provision, Moses focuses on his own weakness. Yet God reminds Moses that He is the One who made the mouth and is fully able to accomplish His purposes through His chosen servant. Even in Moses’ reluctance and frustration, God graciously provides Aaron to help him speak.

God equips His people to trust Him and obey His calling, even when they doubt whether others will believe His Word.

In this message from Exodus 4:1-9, Moses responds to God’s call with fear and uncertainty, asking what he should do if the Israelites do not believe him or listen to him. God patiently answers Moses by giving him signs that demonstrate His power and confirm His Word. As the story moves toward Pharaoh’s confrontation with God, we are brought face-to-face with the difficult truth of God’s sovereignty over the hearts of men. Romans 9 helps us understand that God is righteous in His judgment and sovereign in showing mercy, even when His ways challenge our understanding.

Join us as we consider the sovereignty, righteousness, and mercy of God and what Pharaoh’s hardened heart teaches us about the purposes of our sovereign Creator.

2 TIMOTHY 4:9-22 | The Cost of Faithfulness

Faithfulness to Christ comes at a cost, but God remains faithful to His people even when others abandon them.

In this message from 2 Timothy 4:9-22, Paul writes from prison as he faces the end of his earthly life. He speaks of friends who have left him, others who have been helpful, and the loneliness that can come with faithfully following Christ. Yet even in his abandonment, Paul declares that the Lord stood by him and strengthened him. His example reminds us that faithfulness to Christ does not always lead to comfort, companionship, or ease, but we can trust that God will never abandon His people.

Join us as we consider the cost of faithfulness and the sustaining grace of God when we stand alone.

Faithful Christians are called to preach the Word, remain steadfast in the truth, and finish the race with their faith intact.

In this message from 2 Timothy 4:1-8, Paul gives Timothy a solemn charge to preach the Word with patience and faithfulness, even when people turn away from sound teaching and seek out what they want to hear. As Paul reflects on his own life and approaching death, he declares that he has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. His example reminds us that our calling is not to please people, but to faithfully proclaim the truth of God’s Word and persevere to the end.

In this message from Exodus 3:7-12, the Lord reveals His compassion for His suffering people and commissions Moses to go and deliver them. Moses feels inadequate, but God answers his fear with a powerful promise: “I will be with you.”

RUTH 4:1-12 | Providential Purchase

“A Redeemer must be willing and able to redeem regardless of the cost and regardless of our estate.” —Rodney C. Brown Jr.

Boaz moves from the threshing floor to the city gate. He gathers ten elders as witnesses and confronts the nearer kinsman about the right of redemption for Naomi’s land and for Ruth. When the closer relative refuses once the full cost is revealed, Boaz publicly purchases both the inheritance and the Moabitess widow.

Three movements structure the passage: • Witness to Redemption • Right of Redemption • Rejoice in Redemption

The legal transaction at the gate displays God’s smiling providence. A true redeemer does not calculate personal advantage; he is both willing and able to pay whatever price is required so that the name of the dead is not cut off and the vulnerable are secured.

EXODUS 3:1-9 | The Burning Bush

“Believers trust in our drawing, revealing, promise-keeping God.” —Rodney C. Brown Jr.

Moses, tending sheep on the backside of the wilderness, encounters the burning bush. God draws him near, reveals Himself as the covenant God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and reaffirms His promise to deliver His people from Egypt.

Three scenes unfold: • Catching sight of the theophany • Conversation with the theophany • Commitment of the theophany

The passage confronts the root of anxiety—fear of what we cannot control and the dread of facing it alone. The remedy is not greater control but trust in the God who initiates, reveals Himself, and keeps every promise He has made.

ROMANS 6:1-7 | Resurrection Results

“Believers have died with Christ and therefore are dead to sin.” —Rodney C. Brown Jr.

On Easter Sunday the question is pressed: What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Paul’s answer is emphatic—May it never be!

Because believers have been united with Christ in His death and resurrection, the old self has been crucified. We have died to sin and are no longer its slaves. Baptism pictures this reality: buried with Him into death so that, just as Christ was raised, we too might walk in newness of life.

The resurrection is not merely the empty tomb. It is the power that breaks sin’s dominion and produces genuine transformation. Grace is not a license; it is the life-changing power of God that makes us new.

EXODUS 2:15-22 | Wilderness School

“When God’s covenant people steal His glory, He chastens them for repentance and preparation for future use.”

Moses flees Pharaoh’s death sentence and lands in Midian. There God enrolls him in Wilderness School—forty years of humbling that will prepare him for future usefulness.

Two classes mark the curriculum: • Protection – Moses again sees injustice (shepherds driving away Jethro’s daughters) and acts, but this time without sin. He defends the weak and then serves them by watering the flock. • Direction – He willingly dwells with Reuel/Jethro, accepts a humble shepherd’s life, and receives Zipporah as wife. The trajectory is downward in humility rather than upward in self-exaltation.

God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12). He does not abandon His children when they steal His glory; He chastens them so they learn they are nobodies whom He can use for His purposes.

Preached March 9, 2025 Rhome Bible Church https://www.rhomebible.org

EXODUS 2:23-25 | God Hears and Remembers

“God’s covenant people can trust that He hears their cry, remembers His promises, and is faithful to His Word.” —Rodney C. Brown Jr.

After 430 years in Egypt, the Israelites groan under brutal slavery. God hears their cry, remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and takes notice of them.

Two movements structure the text: • The Cry of God’s Children • The Response of our Impassible God

The passage presses deep into theology proper—God’s immutability and impassibility. Scripture’s language of God “hearing,” “remembering,” and “taking notice” is not evidence of mood swings or newly acquired information. The God who never changes remains faithful to His covenant word. His people can rest knowing that their suffering is neither ignored nor forgotten.

EXODUS 2:11-15 | Moses' Failure

“We must first be delivered by the Lord before He will use us to deliver others.”

Moses, at age 40 and raised in Pharaoh’s palace, sees the oppression of his people and attempts to deliver them in his own strength. He kills an Egyptian, tries to mediate between two Hebrews the next day, and is immediately rejected. His self-appointed role collapses, and he flees to Midian—entering 40 years of wilderness school.

This message examines three movements in the text: • Attempted Deliverer • Attempted Mediator • Admission to Wilderness School

It confronts the danger of ministry driven by compassion and self-effort without personal deliverance and dependence on the covenant God. Without a clear grasp of the gospel, even sincere leaders end up operating in the flesh and calling others to bootstrap their way out of sin.

Amid adversity, God’s people fear Him knowing He causes them to multiply and overcome.

In this message from Exodus 1:1-22, we see a new Pharaoh rise who did not know Joseph. What follows is oppression, fear, and an attempt to stop God’s people. Yet the more they were afflicted, the more they multiplied. God’s promises cannot be stopped.

Join us as we begin our journey through the book of Exodus and discover the sovereign hand of God at work even in the darkest of times.
