Believers use principles from Scripture to help covenant members climb out of debt and earn a living.

With the Ten Commandments given, the Lord now provides practical statutes for daily life among His people—what Scripture later calls the Book of the Covenant. Exodus 21 begins with regulations concerning Hebrew servants. This is not race-based chattel slavery or man-stealing (which is a capital offense). It is voluntary, time-limited indentured service that offered a path out of crushing debt and a fresh start.

God’s law protected the vulnerable: service lasted no longer than six years, release came in the seventh year, families were considered, and generous provision was to be made upon release. The principles remain relevant. God’s people are called to help one another climb out of financial bondage, work diligently, and use the resources and wisdom He provides so that covenant members can move from debt to freedom and productive living under His care.

EXODUS 20:22-26 | Blueprint for Worship

Believers worship God alone in the manner He specifies.

As the Ten Commandments close, the Lord immediately anchors His people’s obedience in the right worship of Himself. He reminds them that He has spoken from heaven and forbids the making of gods of silver or gold. He then gives precise instructions for the altar: it is to be made of earth or of uncut stones, with no iron tool used upon it, and no steps leading up to it.

These details are not arbitrary. They form God’s blueprint for worship. Just as a house must be built exactly according to the architect’s plans, so true worship must follow the pattern God Himself has revealed. We are not free to improve upon it, invent new ways, or borrow the methods of the world. Right worship of the one true God fuels genuine obedience; wrong worship leads only to failure. Soli Deo Gloria requires that we worship Him alone—and exactly as He has specified.

EXODUS 20:18-21 | The Mediator

Believers need a mediator so they will not be afraid of God but fear Him rightly.

As the Ten Commandments conclude, the people still stand at the foot of the mountain amid thunder, lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and thick smoke. Terrified by the holiness of God, they beg Moses to speak to them instead of God Himself lest they die. Moses responds with a striking word: “Do not be afraid, but fear.”

The distinction is crucial. Terror that drives us away from God is not the same as the holy fear that draws us near in obedience. The people needed a mediator, and Moses stood between them and the consuming fire. That need is fully met in Christ, the greater Mediator. Through Him we need not be afraid of condemnation, yet we rightly fear the Lord so that we may not sin and may walk in grateful obedience.

Identification and proclamation for those with credible profession of faith.

Christ gave His church two ordinances: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is the believer’s public identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection, and entrance into the community of faith. The Lord’s Supper is the ongoing proclamation of that union and the continued fellowship of the redeemed around the finished work of Christ.

These ordinances belong to the church, not to individuals or families. They are not means of salvation, nor should they be cheapened by careless administration. Both require a credible profession of faith and careful oversight by the elders who will give an account for the souls under their care. When practiced biblically, baptism and communion powerfully declare the gospel and strengthen the body.

What is the role of the law in the life of a Christian?

In this second message on the relationship between the Law and the kingdom, Pastor Rodney examines the six concrete examples Jesus gives in Matthew 5:21–48. The scribes and Pharisees had reduced the Law to external, minimum “hand obedience.” Jesus exposes the true intent of the Law and presses it all the way to the heart.

Anger is the root of murder. Lust is the root of adultery. Divorce, oaths, retaliation, and love of enemy are all redefined by the King. The Law of the kingdom does not abolish the Old Testament Law; it fulfills it by calling for wholehearted love for God and neighbor. Effective leaders replicate themselves for endurance and excellence.

After Jethro comes to faith, he observes Moses sitting alone from morning until evening judging the people. He delivers a clear rebuke: “What you are doing is not good. You will surely wear yourself out… for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.”

Jethro then gives wise counsel: appoint able, God-fearing, trustworthy men to share the load of leadership. Moses listens and implements the plan. The result is endurance for the leader and excellence in care for the people. Single-pastor shepherding is neither sustainable nor biblical. God designs leadership to be shared so that both the shepherds and the sheep may thrive.

The sixth commandment is short, yet it undergirds the biblical ethic of the sanctity of life. God alone gives life and has the sovereign right to take it. No human being may unlawfully end the life of another made in His image.

For society, this command functions as a curb that restrains evil. For the believer, Jesus presses the commandment deeper in the Sermon on the Mount: anger and contempt are the root of murder. External compliance is not enough. True obedience begins in the heart that has been transformed by the gospel and now loves what God loves and hates what God hates.

The third commandment is often reduced to avoiding certain swear words or casual exclamations. Scripture goes much deeper. To take the name of the Lord in vain is to misuse it—to lift it up for no good purpose.

God’s name is not merely a label; it is the embodiment of His character and essence. Therefore believers are called to handle it with reverence in speech, in worship, in oaths, and in the way they represent Him before others. The positive side of the command is clear: use the name of the Lord rightly. Honor it. Speak it carefully. Live in such a way that the Name is not shamed but glorified.

EXODUS 18:1-26 | Own the Room

After the victory over Amalek, Moses is reunited with his father-in-law Jethro. Moses does not merely exchange small talk. He recounts in detail everything the Lord has done—delivering Israel from Egypt, providing for them, and defeating their enemies. Jethro responds with praise and comes to faith, declaring, “Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods.”

Moses models what it means to “own the room” for God’s greatness: building genuine relationships, going deep, and confidently proclaiming the works of the Lord. The message begins at home. If we will not speak clearly of Christ to our own families, we do not yet love them as we should.

EXODUS 20:14 | Do Not Commit Adultrey

God designed sex as a good gift—relational, recreational, and joyful—within the covenant of marriage. The seventh commandment protects that gift. It is not merely a prohibition against a particular act; it is a call to honor the one-flesh union that God Himself established.

Marriage is a living picture of Christ and His church. To violate the marriage bed is to dishonor both the gift and the gospel it portrays. For the believer, obedience is not external rule-keeping but the overflow of a heart that loves God and therefore refuses to steal a neighbor’s spouse—in body or in heart. We protect the marriage bed because we treasure the Redeemer who first loved us.

EXODUS 20:12 | Active Honoring

The fifth commandment marks a clear pivot in the Decalogue. The first four commandments focus on loving and honoring God; commandments five through ten focus on loving and honoring our neighbor. And the closest neighbors we have are our parents.

Honor is not passive respect or mere compliance. It is active—assigning weight and value to our parents in both word and deed, regardless of whether they fully “deserve” it. This command flows from our love for God Himself. Just as we honor our heavenly Father who has given us life, so we actively honor the earthly parents through whom He gave us life. Obedience here is an overflow of a heart that first belongs to the Lord.

The command covers dishonest business practices, false measurements, wage theft, laziness that consumes others’ resources, and the failure to steward time, talent, and treasure. For the believer, the positive side of the command is clear: we are stewards, not owners. Everything we have has been entrusted by God. We protect what belongs to others, work diligently, give generously, and manage what God has given for His glory rather than our own.

EXODUS 19:1-6 | Kingdom of Priests

Three months after leaving Egypt, Israel camps at the foot of Mount Sinai. The call is clear: if they will obey His voice and keep His covenant, they will be His treasured possession—a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

Like Joseph, who was freed from slavery and exalted to serve as a mediator, Israel has been delivered for a purpose. They are to represent the King and mediate His truth to the nations. The same is true for every believer: we have been saved not merely from something, but for something—to live as royal priests who declare the excellencies of the One who called us out of darkness.

EXODUS 20:17 | Command of the Contentment

The tenth commandment is unique. “You shall not covet” addresses the heart rather than an external action. For the believer it becomes a window into the character of God. The Lord gives to each according to His sovereign will. EXODUS 19:7-15 | Royal Visit

This is a royal visit from the King of the universe. Approach requires reverence, preparation, and a heart that understands the holiness of God. The same truth applies to us today. Through Christ’s perfect sacrifice we are brought near, yet we still approach with holy fear and committed hearts, never treating the living God as common.

EXODUS 20:3 | Soli Deo Gloria

MATTHEW 28:16-20 | Marching Orders

On a mountain in Galilee the eleven disciples meet the resurrected Jesus. Some worship; some still hesitate. Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. On the basis of that absolute authority He commissions His people: go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe everything He has commanded.

This is not a suggestion—it is the church’s standing order until the end of the age. The mission is clear, the authority is complete, and the promise is sure: “I am with you always.” Believers are called to obey these marching orders with confidence, knowing the King who sends them also goes with them.

Believers never create, serve, or worship images of creation or of the Creator.

The second commandment forbids the making of any graven image or likeness of anything in heaven, on earth, or under the earth, and forbids the worship or service of such images. This is not merely a prohibition against pagan idols. It is a command given to God’s redeemed people.

The first commandment tells us who we must worship: God alone. The second commandment tells us how we must worship Him: only in the way He has prescribed. Any attempt to image God—whether through physical representations or according to human imagination—reduces and blasphemes the Creator. Acceptable worship is limited by God’s revealed will, not by our feelings or preferences.

Before giving a single commandment, God speaks and identifies Himself: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” The foundation of the Ten Commandments is not a list of rules, but a relationship with the Redeemer who has already saved His people.

God is the One who speaks, keeps His promises, is known, redeems, is loved, and compels His people to love others. Obedience flows from knowing who He is and what He has already done. The same is true for every believer: we obey because we know and love the God who first loved and redeemed us.

EXODUS 19:16-25 | Holy Smokes

We live differently when we understand God’s holiness.

On the third day the Lord descends on Mount Sinai in fire. Thunder and lightning flash, a thick cloud covers the mountain, the whole mountain quakes violently, and a trumpet blast grows louder and louder. The people in the camp tremble in terror.

Boundaries are set with the clear warning that anyone who touches the mountain must be put to death. Our God is a consuming fire. This terrifying display of holiness is not the end of the story for believers—we now approach through the perfect sacrifice of Christ—but it must shape how we live. When we truly grasp the holiness of God, casual Christianity becomes impossible.

GALATIANS 1:1-9 | Gospel Under Attack

Christians know and defend the undistorted gospel because eternal souls and God’s glory are at stake.

In the opening of Galatians, Paul wastes no time. He confronts a deadly threat: false teachers (the Judaizers) who were adding works of the law to the pure gospel of justification by faith alone. What may appear to be a small addition is actually a different gospel entirely—and Paul pronounces a curse on anyone who preaches it.

After the people test the Lord at Rephidim, Amalek suddenly attacks. For the first time since leaving Egypt, Israel is called not merely to stand still and watch, but to fight. Joshua leads the army while Moses stands on the hill with the staff of God in his hand. As long as Moses’ hands are raised, Israel prevails; when they drop, Amalek gains the advantage.

Aaron and Hur support Moses’ hands until the victory is secured. Moses then builds an altar and names it Yahweh Nissi—“The Lord is my Banner.” The people are to look to their Banner for direction and motivation, knowing it is the Lord Himself who fights for them.

In this passage God formally introduces the Sabbath through the ongoing provision of manna. On the sixth day the people gather a double portion; on the seventh day no manna appears. The Lord is teaching Israel a new rhythm—six days of work followed by a holy day of rest and remembrance.

Some still go out looking for manna on the Sabbath and find none. God confronts their disregard and reaffirms that the Sabbath is His gift. The same God who sustains His people daily also commands them to cease from labor so they will not forget the One who provides.

EXODUS 17:1-7 | God on Trial

Believers refuse to test the Lord by grumbling, knowing He is always with us providing.

At Rephidim the people again face a lack of water. Their response escalates from demand (“Give us water”) to accusation (“Why did you bring us out to kill us?”) and finally to open contempt: “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Moses rightly identifies their grumbling as testing the Lord—an attempt to manipulate God by claiming they deserve better and that He has failed. God does not excuse our weakness, but He faithfully equips His servants to accomplish His purposes.

In this message from Exodus 4:10-17, Moses continues to resist God’s call, expressing fear that he is not capable of speaking to Pharaoh and the people of Israel. Rather than trusting in God’s provision, Moses focuses on his own weakness. Yet God reminds Moses that He is the One who made the mouth and is fully able to accomplish His purposes through His chosen servant. Even in Moses’ reluctance and frustration, God graciously provides Aaron to help him speak.

Boaz moves from the threshing floor to the city gate. He gathers ten elders as witnesses and confronts the nearer kinsman about the right of redemption for Naomi’s land and for Ruth. When the closer relative refuses once the full cost is revealed, Boaz publicly purchases both the inheritance and the Moabitess widow.

Three movements structure the passage: • Witness to Redemption • Right of Redemption • Rejoice in Redemption

The legal transaction at the gate displays God’s smiling providence. A true redeemer does not calculate personal advantage; he is both willing and able to pay whatever price is required so that the name of the dead is not cut off and the vulnerable are secured.

EXODUS 2:11-15 | Moses' Failure

Moses, at age 40 and raised in Pharaoh’s palace, sees the oppression of his people and attempts to deliver them in his own strength. He kills an Egyptian, tries to mediate between two Hebrews the next day, and is immediately rejected. His self-appointed role collapses, and he flees to Midian—entering 40 years of wilderness school.

This message examines three movements in the text: • Attempted Deliverer • Attempted Mediator • Admission to Wilderness School

It confronts the danger of ministry driven by compassion and self-effort without personal deliverance and dependence on the covenant God. Without a clear grasp of the gospel, even sincere leaders end up operating in the flesh and calling others to bootstrap their way out of sin.

After 430 years in Egypt, the Israelites groan under brutal slavery. God hears their cry, remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and takes notice of them.

Two movements structure the text: • The Cry of God’s Children • The Response of our Impassible God

The passage presses deep into theology proper—God’s immutability and impassibility. Scripture’s language of God “hearing,” “remembering,” and “taking notice” is not evidence of mood swings or newly acquired information. The God who never changes remains faithful to His covenant word. His people can rest knowing that their suffering is neither ignored nor forgotten.

EXODUS 2:15-22 | Wilderness School

“When God’s covenant people steal His glory, He chastens them for repentance and preparation for future use.”

Moses flees Pharaoh’s death sentence and lands in Midian. There God enrolls him in Wilderness School—forty years of humbling that will prepare him for future usefulness.

Two classes mark the curriculum: • Protection – Moses again sees injustice (shepherds driving away Jethro’s daughters) and acts, but this time without sin. He defends the weak and then serves them by watering the flock. • Direction – He willingly dwells with Reuel/Jethro, accepts a humble shepherd’s life, and receives Zipporah as wife. The trajectory is downward in humility rather than upward in self-exaltation.

God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12). He does not abandon His children when they steal His glory; He chastens them so they learn they are nobodies whom He can use for His purposes.

On Easter Sunday the question is pressed: What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Paul’s answer is emphatic—May it never be!

Because believers have been united with Christ in His death and resurrection, the old self has been crucified. We have died to sin and are no longer its slaves. Baptism pictures this reality: buried with Him into death so that, just as Christ was raised, we too might walk in newness of life.

The resurrection is not merely the empty tomb. It is the power that breaks sin’s dominion and produces genuine transformation. Grace is not a license; it is the life-changing power of God that makes us new.
