<itunes:summary>"Destructo Disk, an alternative punk band originally from Winchester, VA, has quickly become a Richmond staple. It’s wild to think they’ve only been tearing it up here for a few years—they’ve covered serious ground in no time. If you haven’t checked them out yet, do yourself a favor. Their live shows are pure energy, and they know how to bring the chaos.

In this episode, we dive into their origins, their journey to Richmond, and—if you stick around long enough—you’ll finally understand what "coagulation" really means. Clair and I swap tour stories, old guard vs. new guard battle tales, and most importantly, we learn what it takes to become a MILKER.

I’ve seen some weird shit on tour, but their story of the infamous blood bed is next level. Absolute bruiser. These kids rule, and this conversation was a blast—made even better by getting to record at The Compound.

Big thanks to Destructo Disk for throwing down and to RVA Mag for always having our back. Cheers, y’all." — host, Harrison Christy</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>"A key figure in Richmond’s ongoing music renaissance, TRAPCRY is absolutely killing it. If you’re not already familiar, it’s time to change that. His music is captivating, fun, and truly unique.

I first saw him perform while working security at one of his shows, and I was completely blindsided—at a loss for words because I couldn’t stop smiling. I was blown away. This man takes the stage with pure confidence (and sometimes, buns out). The beats are infectious, the lyrics cut with seductive precision, and he commands the room effortlessly. Consider me a total fan.

In this episode, we dive into his upbringing, his journey into the arts and music, his love for Richmond, and—of course—our shared appreciation for a glistening Patrick Swayze.

This was such a fun conversation. I thought I was ready for TrapCry, but I was even more stoked to meet the genuine Gene behind it all.

Big thanks to Fuzzy Cactus and crew for providing a safe space to record, and much love to RVA Magazine for always having our back. Hope everyone’s doing well out there. On my way home from work, I saw an SUV bump into a GRTC bus—so please, stay safe. Oh mylanta." — host, Harrison Christy</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>"How many of us believe we "don’t know how to dance"? I’ve come to realize how absurd that thought is—because if you can move, you can dance. Dance isn’t just about technique or performance; it’s about allowing your body to move in ways that feel good. It’s a birthright, a form of self-expression, and a way to heal.

During my Year of Magical Thinking—or rather Dancing, I confronted my own fears of movement in public, dancing freely atop Chimborazo Park as part of my morning practice. I questioned where our collective fear of dancing stems from—how societal expectations and personal insecurities hold us back. As a Black Queer man, I also reflected on the deeper cultural and generational conditioning that limits emotional expression, particularly for Black men.

That’s why I sat down with Jonathan Paige-Brown Jr.—a Soul & Blues Afro-Americana musician and classically trained ballet dancer—to explore the intersection of dance, masculinity, and healing. We discuss the ways movement helps us process emotions, break free from restrictive norms, and reconnect with ourselves.

Join us for this conversation on the power of dance as self-care, the freedom of movement, and why we all deserve to dance—whether on stage, in a park, or even in the grocery store line.

Stay tuned for my upcoming deep dive into ballet, vampiric lore, and what these art forms reveal about human nature." -- host, Jon Cope</itunes:subtitle>

Before stepping into the burlesque scene, this VCU fashion grad found her footing working at Carytown staples Bygones and the Byrd Theatre—where her love for costuming and all things vintage began.

Just two years into performing, at age 25, Emma was shockingly diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She endured a grueling treatment process, but with the unwavering support of family, friends, and the burlesque community, she’s been cancer-free for 8 years.

This was a fun one. We sat down with Emma to talk about her origin story, roommates using their penises as wristwatches, tips on bedazzling nipple jewelry, and then got into the real stuff... FUCK CANCER.

Big thanks to Broadberry Entertainment Group for the recording space and to RVA Mag for always having our back. Hope everyone’s holding up out there, in the middle of this wild reality we’re living in. Cheers, y’all! — host, Harrison Christy</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Facebook. Richmond, VA. If you’ve ever been involved with both, chances are you’ve heard of Lindsey’s List. What started as a simple way to connect people with jobs, roommates, and decent landlords quickly grew legs and became something so much bigger.

On this episode, I sit down with THE Lindsey to talk about everything from narrowly missing each other in our hometowns to the wild journey that brought us to Richmond—and even cows being impaled by forklifts (yeah, you read that right). We also dive into the Carytown connection and her role as a quiet but essential pillar of this community.

Whether you know Lindsey personally or just through the FB group, you’ll enjoy hearing her kick back with a laugh, a seltzer, and some much-deserved downtime.

Big thanks to Broadberry for the recording space and RVA Magazine for bringing you Episode 2 of It’s Still Our City. Tune in!

20 Years of RVA Magazine! A Chat with S. Preston Duncan

As we dive into the 20-year journey of RVA Magazine, it made sense to document it somehow -- so I started this laid back, insightful, and hopefully entertaining, podcast series. It's a chance for me to catch up with old friends who've shaped the magazine from the start, sharing laughs and stories about the unexpected paths we've navigated along the way.

Kicking off the series is none other than S. Preston Duncan, a close buddy and a steadfast contributor, who's now making waves as a celebrated poet on the international stage, with works featured in renowned literary publications globally.

We sat down and took it from the top, reminiscing and exploring his journey.

And speaking of journeys, here's a shoutout to Preston's upcoming book, "Blood Alluvium," hitting the shelves this September courtesy of Parlyaree Press.

Curious about more of Preston’s poetic adventures? Swing by his collection at https://lnk.bio/Sprestonduncan to get the full scoop.

Chandler LIVE at The Camel in Richmond, VA October 2023

Back in October, we had the unique opportunity to record Chandler Matkins, known simply as Chandler, during his performance at The Camel in Richmond, VA. What unfolded was an electrifying set brimming with hip-hop anthems, characterized by Chandler's robust wordplay that seamlessly blends self-deprecating humor with a dose of confidence.

At first glance, Chandler, with his fiery red beard and bald head, might not fit the traditional mold of a rising rap star. His background as a comedian and a drummer in a Southern roots rock band paints a diverse picture. However, it's precisely this unconventional mix that makes his rise in Richmond's rap scene so intriguing and enjoyable. Chandler's music – a combination of hard-hitting beats, intelligent lyrics, and a touch of humor – resonates widely, evidenced by his impressive following of over 650K on TikTok globally. His journey from Hampton to Richmond, a detour through Brooklyn, and back to Richmond again showcases his adaptability and appeal. The same audience that catapulted him to online fame is now flocking to his live shows, eager to experience the unique energy and style that Chandler brings to the hip-hop world.

Special thanks to Dillon Douglasson for recording this set.

Holy River pt. 2 LIVE at Yurtananda in Buckingham, VA June 2023

Nestled in the serene landscape of Buckingham, VA, Yurtantanda is a breathtaking property that offers stunning views of The Mighty James River and the Blue Ridge Mountains' foothills. Since 2000, this picturesque location has been the vacation retreat of renowned yogi practitioner Haris Harini Lender, and it now also serves as a quaint, intimate music venue. This setting provides an idyllic backdrop for the music of Holy River, a unique band hailing from Richmond, VA.

In a recent collaboration with Chickenwire Guesthouse, we captured an enchanting double set by Holy River. Known for their blend of freak-folk with punk roots, Holy River's music is a meditative journey of trance-like, drone-based sounds. Their lyrics, deeply embedded in themes of nature preservation and personal spiritual growth, evoke a profound connection with the environment. The band's sound, reminiscent of Appalachian melodies, could also seamlessly complement a Scandinavian Midsommar celebration, stirring listeners with a compelling urge to dance around a Maypole. The group's distinctive sound is shaped by Price's mastery of acoustic and fretted string instruments, while Sullivan's harmonium provides the foundational drone and chord progressions, creating a mesmerizing auditory experience.

Kidz At Play LIVE in Oregon Hill, Richmond, VA July 2023

In a momentous farewell to their Richmond roots, local hip-hop sensation Kidz At Play staged an unforgettable final performance in the backyard of an Oregon Hill residence, a charming neighborhood nestled in Richmond, VA. This iconic show in July 2023 was not just a concert but a celebration of their landmark signing with AWAL, a label under the Sony banner. The house rocked with high energy as the Kidz delivered a memorable performance, showcasing the electrifying music that catapulted them to the next level.

Our previous coverage in June highlighted the remarkable journey of Kidz At Play, an 11-member collective originating from a tight-knit group of high school friends in Richmond. Their recent signing with AWAL, a Sony-affiliated label known for representing diverse talents such as Little Simz, JPEGMAFIA, and Deadmau5, marks a significant milestone. This multi-album deal, which allows the group to retain full creative control, is a testament to their growing influence in the music industry. Spearheaded by founder SMYTH, Kidz At Play gained widespread attention with a viral TikTok single in June 2022. Jacob Parra Mena, a Director of the group, reflects on their journey: "We started to be like, yo, let’s take it seriously." Though comprised of only three musicians, the collective's eclectic sound is a fusion of varied influences and personal narratives, making their music uniquely resonant.

Rikki Rakki LIVE at The Camel March 19, 2023

Back in March, we captured the finale of Rikki Rakki's four-week residency at The Camel, a well-known venue in Richmond, VA. This unforgettable performance in March set the stage for the much-anticipated release of their debut studio album, "Breaking Skin," which arrived in June. We invite you to enjoy this recording and continue supporting live, local music.

Our June interview with Rikki Rakki delved into their first studio album, "Breaking Skin." Originating from Richmond, Virginia, this rock band has crafted a unique blend of profound lyrics and innovative sounds. The album, a product of lead songwriter Erika Blatnik's years of reflective exploration, offers a "stargazy" sound that captures both nocturnal ambience and intimate life stories. More than just a collection of songs, "Breaking Skin" serves as a personal chronicle of Blatnik's journey.

<itunes:summary>Back in March, we captured the finale of Rikki Rakki's four-week residency at The Camel, a well-known venue in Richmond, VA.

Special thanks to John W Stuart ‘Stu’ Gilchrist III for recording this set.
