I’ve come to realize how absurd that thought is—because if you can move, you can dance. Dance isn’t just about technique or performance; it’s about allowing your body to move in ways that feel good. It’s a birthright, a form of self-expression, and a way to heal. During my Year of Magical Thinking—or rather Dancing, I confronted my own fears of movement in public, dancing freely atop Chimborazo Park as part of my morning practice. I questioned where our collective fear of dancing stems from—how societal expectations and personal insecurities hold us back. As a Black Queer man, I also reflected on the deeper cultural and generational conditioning that limits emotional expression, particularly for Black men. That’s why I sat down with Jonathan Paige-Brown Jr.—a Soul & Blues Afro-Americana musician and classically trained ballet dancer—to explore the intersection of dance, masculinity, and healing. ]]> It's Still Our City | Ep. 3 Russian Vampp RVA Magazine 01:31:56 Richmond’s own Raunchy Chandelier, Emma (aka Empress de Naste’), is a local artist, burlesque performer, and the producer behind Immodest Opulence Productions. Before stepping into the burlesque scene, this VCU fashion grad found her footing working at Carytown staples Bygones and the Byrd Theatre—where her love for costuming and all things vintage began. Just two years into performing, at age 25, Emma was shockingly diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She endured a grueling treatment process, but with the unwavering support of family, friends, and the burlesque community, she’s been cancer-free for 8 years. This was a fun one. We sat down with Emma to talk about her origin story, roommates using their penises as wristwatches, tips on bedazzling nipple jewelry, and then got into the real stuff... FUCK CANCER. Since 2000, this picturesque location has been the vacation retreat of renowned yogi practitioner Haris Harini Lender, and it now also serves as a quaint, intimate music venue. This setting provides an idyllic backdrop for the music of Holy River, a unique band hailing from Richmond, VA. In a recent collaboration with Chickenwire Guesthouse, we captured an enchanting double set by Holy River. Known for their blend of freak-folk with punk roots, Holy River's music is a meditative journey of trance-like, drone-based sounds. Their lyrics, deeply embedded in themes of nature preservation and personal spiritual growth, evoke a profound connection with the environment. The band's sound, reminiscent of Appalachian melodies, could also seamlessly complement a Scandinavian Midsommar celebration, stirring listeners with a compelling urge to dance around a Maypole. The group's distinctive sound is shaped by Price's mastery of acoustic and fretted string instruments, while Sullivan's harmonium provides the foundational drone and chord progressions, creating a mesmerizing auditory experience.
