Bills add depth - New stadium nears completion

Joe Brady takes over as Bills head coach - set to hire offensive coordinator

The Bills have now formally introduced Joe Brady as the new head coach. Among his first moves, according to reports, is to hire offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, who most recently has served as a senior offensive assistant to Sean Payton in Denver. Brady and Carmichael spent time together under Payton in New Orleans. Brady will continue to call plays, but Carmichael represents a critical hire in the process of putting together a new staff. Bills rally to top Bengals in absolute thriller

With the Bills down 28-18 with just under 9:00 left in the fourth quarter and the defense struggling to stop Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati offense, it would have been easy for some to think it was too much for Buffalo to overcome.

Those who know Josh Allen know better.

The Bills rallied with 21 points in a 4:30 span that featured a 40-yard TD run from Allen, back to back interceptions of Burrow, the first of which Christian Benford returned 63-yards for a touchdown, and a 4th down TD pass from Allen to rookie tight end Jackson Hawes to cap a dramatic 39-34 come from behind win. Defense Rests: Texans down Bills in Houston

Upset Minded: Bills suffer inexcusable loss at Miami

Josh Allen threw for 306 yards, but threw an interception and fumbled as part of a three turnover effort for the offense in a 30-13 upset loss to the previously 2-7 Miami Dolphins. Cook fumbled as well and was held to just 53 yards rushing. Miami snapped a seven game losing streak against Buffalo, with De'Von Achane rushing for 174 yards and two touchdowns and added six receptions for 51 yards in the receiving game. Buffalo falls to 6-3 and lost ground to the Patriots (8-2) in the division race. New England won at Tampa Bay. Adam Benigni and Sal Maiorana were live with postgame coverage.

Patrick Mahomes completed just 44% of his passes against the Bills defense which was a career low in a regular season game. The Bills certainly weren't perfect in their 31-21 victory over the Dolphins Thursday night, but in the game's biggest moments, they were the team that made the key plays to pull out the victory. Josh Allen had another efficient night, James Cook was a stud on the ground, and while the defense needs to clean up some things, it was there when it mattered most. Sal Maiorana has thoughts on how the Bills earned the victory which gives them a 3-0 record and firm control of the AFC East.

Something Cooking: James Cook leads Bills to dominant win over Jets

Josh Allen bounced back from what appears to be a broken nose, and a Bills defense that got shredded in the come from behind win over Baltimore in the opener and down two key players, held the Jets out of the end zone until a late garbage time touchdown in a dominant 30-10 win over the Jets on Sunday. CB Tre'Davious White shows early promise in his return to Buffalo

Bills target key areas of need in first three rounds of draft

Cornerback and defensive line, not necessarily in that order, were the biggest areas of need for the Buffalo Bills heading into the draft, and that's exactly where GM Brandon Beane went over the first three rounds. Buffalo selected cornerback Max Hairston with the 30th overall pick, traded up to get South Carolina defensive tackle TJ Sanders in the second round, and in the process added a third round pick which they used on Arkansas edge rusher Landon Jackson.

Chris does a great job evaluating college prospects, and he had plenty to offer as the Bills ponder defensive tackles, cornerbacks and edge rushers, both in the first round and then in the second.

GM Brandon Beane is expected to try to answer both with the draft set for next week. It's been a solid offseason for the Buffalo Bills. From multiple extensions to keep their own, to some key free agent additions on both sides of the ball, to a new deal for MVP quarterback Josh Allen. As the draft approaches, they still have some needs at defensive tackle and cornerback in particular. Former Bill Steve Tasker, arguably the greatest special teams player the game has ever seen, joined Adam and Sal has he was preparing for "One Bills Live" to give takes on all of it, as well as the NFL rule change to move touchbacks out to the 35 yard line.

Bills transition focus to NFL Draft after Benford Extension

The Bills continue with an impressive offseason. The latest development was the signing of top cornerback Christian Benford to a four year $76-million extension. That follows deals for WR Khalil Shakir, LB Terrel Bernard, and DE Greg Rousseau. Notably, there doesn't appear to be any progress toward a new deal for RB James Cook. GM Brandon Beane, speaking at the NFL owners meetings in Florida, says the focus has now shifted entirely to the upcoming draft. Adam Benigni and Sal Maiorana join with takes on all of it, and a look at some of the potential draft options for Buffalo.

The Super Bowl window remains open for the Buffalo Bills

The Bills initially got off to a slow start in free agency, and then over the past couple of days have shifted things into high gear. That includes the signing of five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Joey Bosa to a one year deal. GM Brandon Beane has largely focused on upgrading the defensive line, they've brought back safety Damar Hamlin on a one year deal, and added receiver Joshua Palmer to the offense.

All of that, on top of a new six year $330-million dollar contract for MVP Josh Allen, and extensions for key players like defensive end Greg Rousseau, linebacker Terrel Bernard, and receiver Khalil Shakir.

Can the Bills take that final step up to win? with Marcellus Wiley

Back in 1997, the Bills were thinking about who might eventually replace Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith. They drafted Marcellus Wiley in the second round out of Columbia that year with that possibility in mind. Wiley eventually did that in 2000 when Smith moved on to Washington. He wound up playing ten seasons in the NFL for the Bills, Chargers, Cowboys, and Jaguars. He was a player that provided answers on the field, and was never at a loss for words off of it. Not surprisingly, he went on to broadcasting success with ESPN and FS1 among other outlets.

He joined Adam and Sal to reflect on his time in Buffalo, that included the infamous Music City Miracle, and offer some strong takes on what it's going to take to get this current edition of the Bills over the top and into the Super Bowl.

The NFL Scouting Combine is in full swing in Indianapolis with the Bills and others beginning the process of change and upgrade to a roster that again fell short of the Super Bowl this season. The AFC Championship loss to the Chiefs, and Eagles Super Bowl domination of Kansas City, again underscored the need to get bigger, heavier, and stronger on the defensive line. Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane both spoke to the media, and among the obvious themes, was the need to get more production out of recent top draft picks Keon Coleman and Dalton Kincaid.

Familiar Story: Chiefs top Bills 32-29 in AFC Championship game

The more things change, the more they stay the same. For all the success the Bills enjoyed this year, the Chiefs remain the postseason nemesis. Kansas City beat Buffalo 32-29 in the AFC Championship game Sunday night, as they now advance to face the Philadelphia Eagles with a chance to make history in winning a third straight Super Bowl. The Bills in the meantime fall to 0-4 in the playoffs against Kansas City in the playoffs with Sean McDermott as head coach and Josh Allen at quarterback, with many of the storylines in those losses remaining the same. Bills top Ravens 27-25 - Advance to face Chiefs in AFC title game

The Bills defense took the ball away three times while Josh Allen and the offense had success with a relatively conservative game plan, and Buffalo knocked off the Baltimore Ravens 27-25 in an AFC Divisional playoff Sunday night. Luck was also on the Bills side as tight end Mark Andrews dropped would should have been an easy two point conversion to tie the game and force overtime. The Bills advance to once again face the Kansas City Chiefs, this time back in the conference championship game for the first time since 2020. Bills pull away for Wild Card win 31-7 over Broncos setting up Divisional round game against Ravens

After falling behind on an early Denver touchdown, the Bills reeled off 31 unanswered points to beat the Broncos 31-7 in an AFC Wild Card match-up Sunday in Orchard Park. Josh Allen threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns, while James Cook rushed for 120 yards on 23 carries, showing the tremendous offensive balance that's led to so much success this season. The Bills defense limited rookie QB Bo Nix and Denver went just 2 of 9 on third down which has been a problem area for Buffalo this season. The Bills advance to a highly anticipated Divisional Round game as they host Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens next week. Adam and Sal were live with postgame takes.

he Bills had already secured the No. 2 seed in the AFC, and so there was little meaning to a 23-16 loss to the Patriots and Foxboro to close the regular season that, oh by the way, cost New England that top overall pick in the draft and saw Jerod Mayo's time as head coach there end after one season. Josh Allen took all of one snap to extend his consecutive starts streak, with the majority of the starters sitting this one out. The Bills locked up the No. 2 seed in the AFC and finished undefeated at home in the regular season for the first time since 1990 with a 40-14 win over the New York Jets. Josh Allen threw for 182 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and ran for one as well. The Buffalo defense that's struggled in recent weeks scored on a safety and took the ball away three times. The Bills rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat the New England Patriots 24-21 Sunday in Orchard Park. James cook ran for 100-yards and a touchdown, and caught a TD pass as well on a day where the Bills struggled with New England's defensive scheme for a good portion of the game. The Bills injury depleted defense struggled, but did force three turnovers and scored in the second half. Adam Benigni and Sal Maiorana hosted live postgame coverage.

Bills defense and questionable coaching derail historic game by Josh Allen

Josh Allen has now gone where no NFL quarterback has ever gone before... Three passing and three rushing touchdowns in a single game. That's a first in NFL history. Amazingly it wasn't enough as the Bills lost 44-42 to the Rams, ending their seven game win streak and falling to 10-3 on the year and into a tie in the race for the AFC's second seed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Defense and special teams were problem areas that saw horrible execution, and questionable coaching. Sal Maiorana joined Adam Benigni live from LA postgame.

His contract expired at the end of last season, and he now comes back at a time when the team is 10-2 and setting up for what looks like the unfinished business of a Super Bowl run. Bills Mafia has been so much a part of the story through the years, and is now reaching another peak with the success and interest in the team. The game was highlighted by the debut of receiver Amari Cooper who Buffalo traded for earlier this week. Cooper finished with 4 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Josh Allen threw for 258 of his 323 yards in the second half of his 100th career start. The Bills defense adjusted and closed the door on Mason Rudolph and the Titans in the second half.

Longtime Bills reporters Adam Benigni and Sal Maiorana will be hosting the BLEAV in Bills podcast for the 2024 season and beyond. They have more than 70 years of experience between them covering the team, and with the Bills remaining legitimate AFC contenders, they will provide their insight and analysis several times a week in this space.

Benigni covered the Bills during the Super Bowl era while working at WSTM-TV in Syracuse, and then moved to WGRZ in Buffalo in 1997 and has been there ever since as an anchor/reporter. He served as Sports Director at the NBC affiliate for the last ten years, and is now the host and EP of the station's Monday night program "Sports Talk Live."

Maiorana started covering the Bills full time back in 1990. He has been lead Bills beat writer/columnist for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle for the last 35 years. A regular radio guest on the Buffalo Brothers on 95.1 FM in Rochester, he is also the author of 22 books including several on the history of the Bills.
