The Dunwich Horror stars Dean Stockwell, Ed Begley and Sandra Dee and adapts the 1932 HP Lovecraft story of the same name. The full text of the story is available at HPLovecraft.com.

The party confront their most dire enemy yet - the wit of a 16 year old girl.

We play this game (partially) using what is probably my favorite game publisher's products, Lamentations of the Flame Princes, from which we liberally borrow various monsters, gremlins, and goblins. I buy their books because of the production value behind them and as they've escalated over the past couple of years.

My conception of the game, such as it was, was to mix the pseudo-historical setting of the core books, somewhat reconcile it with the crazier stuff like A Red and Pleasant Land, and explore a lot of my favorite fantasy stuff.

We also don't play by the rules and bring a sort of general house ruled spirit to the entire thing, so there is that.

I thought I Am Legend was about revolution. I said if you're going to do something about revolution, you should start at the beginning. I mean, Richard starts his book with one man left; everybody in the world has become a vampire. I said we got to start at the beginning and tweak it up a little bit. I couldn't use vampires because he did, so I wanted something that would be an earth-shaking change. Something that was forever, something that was really at the heart of it. I said, so what if the dead stop staying dead? ... And the stories are about how people respond or fail to respond to this. That's really all [the zombies] ever represented to me. In Richard's book, in the original I Am Legend, that's what I thought that book was about. There's this global change and there's one guy holding out saying, wait a minute, I'm still a human. He's wrong. Go ahead. Join them. You'll live forever! In a certain sense he's wrong but on the other hand, you've got to respect him for taking that position.

GoldenAgeHorror.com Essay 1 - Black Sunday (1960)

The image of Barbara Steele’s staring eyes on the poster for Black Sunday (1960) is one of the great horror movie poster visuals. The opening scene, in which the witch Asa (played by Steele) is tortured and killed, is one of the great opening scenes to any horror movie. The remainder of the film, a high gothic by the Italian visual virtuoso by Mario Bava is often uneven but remains a titanic example of Italian horror.

Mario Bava was a classically trained artist, a painter, and sculptor, who got his start as a cinematographer. He was an excellent visual stylist, and Black Sunday was his first full film, kicking off a string of well-regarded exploitation cinema throughout the sixties. Notably, the Boris Karloff featuring anthology Black Sabbath, the crime/spy film Danger Diabolik (notable, at least to me, for the scene in which John Phillip Law and Marisa Mell cavort on a giant pile of money), and the proto-giallos The Whip and the Body and Blood and Black Lace.

The star of the movie, playing the dual roles of Asa and Katia, Barbara Steele broke out via her role in Black Sunday, which may be her most famous turn. She also appears in the Vincent Price The Pit and the Pendulum and makes a notable appearance in Fellini’s 8 ½. She starred in a string of Italian movies in the sixties and seventies.

The film tells the story of Asa, a vampiric, devil-worshipping witch from the seventeenth century, who comes alive when a pair of physicians stumble across her tomb and inadvertently feed her blood. Katia Vadja, also played by Steele, makes her appearance shortly thereafter, memorably framed by hunting dogs, and the rest of the film focuses on Asa attempting to siphon Katia’s life away while the younger physician, Andre Gorobec (played by John Richardson) tries to save her.

A Gothic Revival

Black Sunday falls in with a Gothic revival happening in the late 50’s, as Hammer Studios reinterpreted the Universal Gothics of the thirties with cheaper sets, fake blood, cleavage, and a lurid color palette. Bava’s film stands as the true heir to those Universal Gothics. Although the level of gore and violence in Black Sunday would certainly be out of place in Tod Browning’s Dracula, the epic visual style and the German Expressionist unreality of the movie seem to have much more in common with Lugosi than the Christopher Lee films do.

Politics and Morality

The politics of Italy in the nineteen sixties are complicated (which shouldn’t surprise anyone) but essentially, Italy capitalized on the Marshall Plan to create a booming economy which embraced many of the same things that the America of the fifties and sixties would: a rising middle class, consumerism, improved quality of life, expanding social safety net and of course, creeping wealth inequality.

Black Sunday reflects this changing Italian society. Despite the “Economic Miracle” of Italy in the fifties and sixties, there were those left behind. Black Sunday does not reflect a Space Age optimism but instead a sort of nihilism that suggests a complete distrust of humanity.

Traditionally for a Gothic, the decadent upper-class Vadja clan holds spoiled blood and terrible secrets. The middle class doesn’t fare much better, with the self-important doctor unleashing unwittingly unleashing Asa Vadja and dooming himself, only to be reduced to a zombified servant.

Only the sensibly superstitious townsfolk, reflecting the “Get Behind Me Satan” values of the film in total come off seeming at all in touch with reality, which for them is dirty and unpleasant. This is a deeply conservative view, giving the most sympathetic treatment to the clear-eyed, Christian villagers. Given the climate of Italy at the time, it is hard not to view this as a repudiation of the changing values of the modern era.

Gender

In many of Bava’s films, and this one is no exception, women do not come off especially well. (As I just noted, Black Sunday’s viewpoint seems to be a bitter nihilism, so the men do not come off much better).

Barbara Steele’s performance as Asa is electric, her gestures visible from space. Her Katia is a swooning nuisance that barely registers as a character. Katia, the meek and subservient, is the heroine. Asa, the pleasure-seeking Satanist is the film’s villain. Taken with the rest of Bava’s oeuvre, this can only be seen to be a pattern. After all, Bava pioneered the giallo -- not a film genre known for even-handed treatment of women.

Still, the movie can be looked at through modern eyes like an old story that was probably not the authorial intent. A woman takes what she wants - power, sex, fortune - and the powerful institutions of the time balk and take revenge. This is a story that has played out many times in many different ways. In the modern day, we now look at such things as rightfully inspiring revenge.

If I could back and do this game over, I would insist that at least one of them had family ties in order to make what happens in this game a bit more interesting. The fact that they were basically all unconnected to the world was not a positive.

I mistakenly identify Trucchi's as a regional store in Rhode Island - Trucchi's are only in Massachusetts. I should have said Star Market, Dave's Market, Price Rite, something like that.

This episode, Steven, Chris, and I play Shooting the Moon, part of the Romance Trilogy by Emily Care Boss/Black and Green Games.

Please check out the previous episode if you haven't listened to this yet.

Shooting the Moon has a cooperative game setup where we all take turns adding attributes to the beloved and the two suitors. The first half of this recording is us moving through this process quickly.

We don't explain what we are doing very well but if you aren't familiar with the game, know that we are first describing the beloved Blizznacht, then reducing those traits to simple synonyms and antonyms, then assigned those simplified traits out to the suitors.

We usually don't include these parts of games on the recordings but I felt like it might be a bit more important. Let me know what you thought of that.

Steven's upstairs neighbors are vigorously testing their mattress throughout. I tried my best to remove the movement of springs from the audio, but I'm certain I couldn't have entirely removed it.

Both Steven and Chris were also having some crackling mic issues. So sorry about that as well. I am trying to approach these as little audio plays and I know that the production quality is not there yet, but I really want it to be, someday.

Our Halloween Dance of the Damned episode emerges, finally, wriggling like an angry graveworm from the depths of my computer.

This episode, Andrew, Chris, Gino and I play Dance of the Damned. It's an interesting game inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe story "Masque of the Red Death." Contests, and the meta plot, are resolved via a deck of playing cards, which make for a very interesting game.

Our first time covering Mario Bava on this show! Gothic chiller Black Sunday is this month's entry in our series on foreign horror films before 1979.

This series has proven to be fairly popular with Andrew. I don't know if anyone remembers the premise of this show now, 41 episodes and several years in, but originally it was "horror movie fan (Matt) watches movie with horror movie novice (Andrew)." Black Sunday is sort of a throwback to our original premise, in that the non-horror movie fan really didn't have much to like.

It sort of makes one wonder how much of my affection for Black Sunday comes from it's place in the canon, so to speak. Although, regardless of why I like it, I really, really do.

Here's some other great Bava films.

I couldn't really find much on the topic of class in Bava's films. I'm certain that I read about it at least once, unless I am thinking of Lucio Fulci. Please shoot me a tweet if you are aware of scholarship on the subject.

Obligatory apology - sorry for being a low energy Jeb this episode. I was a tired guy this day. This episode has the greatest opening audio of literally any of our episodes thus far. Also sorry for various pug noises (that's Frankie) and also the lateness of this episode. This episode snuck in just under the wire.

Next month, we are putting out our "Black Sunday" episode.

The original 1954 film is a truly fantastic movie. Godzilla, of the Monsters, less so. Still entirely watchable, in my opinion, Lot of groans from Andrew though. We watched the Criterion Collection edition, for those keeping score at home.

This episode, Andrew, Chris and I play Goblin Quest. Although this is meant to be a GM less game, I decided at the time, mainly out of exhaustion, to play a pseudo game master role. We sort of built the plane as we played it with this game, so please bear that in mind.

I think that it (Goblin Quest) is a great one session game, especially if, like in this case, you can't get the whole gang together.

Andrew did the character art for this episode and I think it came out great.

GoldenAgeHorror.com Update - Necronomicon 2017

Andrew and I are hard at work trying to find a time in which to get together and record our episode on Godzilla. If you are looking for a foreign horror movie fix, I might suggest some past episodes? Aside from our last two episodes on House and Nosferatu: the Vampyr, we also did episodes on M (episode 11), the Testament of Dr Mabuse (Episode 10), Vampyr (episode 17), and Suspiria (episode 25).

Otherwise, I figured I'd mention a couple of things that I learned when I went to the Necronomicon, the Weird fiction and Horror festival that takes place about a half hour from where I live, in Providence RI, the home of HP Lovecraft. There was plenty of overlap between the interests of people who listen to this podcast and the people who might attend that festival.

The first panel I went to was the Eldritch Arthouse - the panelists were discussing Suspiria when I walked in, they also mentioned some movies that I definitely want to check out, Stalker and Possession being the big two recommendations that I got. Richard Stanley, the director of Hardware and Dust Devil was on that panel, and I was able to see him present material from his adaptation of the Colour Out of Space, which is in preproduction. It looks wild, like a more serious and frightening version of the Stuart Gordon pictures. Apparently it is actually on track to being made. The art looked really cool and if it manages to be half as good as he wants it to be, it will be amazing.

There were lots of other panels and vendors, but I'll skip going over haunted New England and Call of Cthulhu panels. If you are looking for recommendations for Providence restaurants, I have a few for you, but you can reach out to me for that stuff. There's a bunch of ways to contact me there.

I unfortunately had to go home instead of going to the Dunwich Horror Picture Show, but I went two years ago and it was a blast. That particular movie I'm sure will eventually be covered on the podcast.

Jonathan Harker journeys to Transylvania in order to sell a house in bucolic Wismer to a mysterious noblemen. Nightmare after nightmare follows.

Nosferatu the Vampyre came out in 1979 and was directed by Werner Herzog and stars Klaus Kinski. This is a famous pairing, explored by Herzog in My Best Fiend.

We watched the Shout Factory edition of Nosferatu the Vampyre, which, although light on special features, is a great transfer of the film.

Be warned - we are both enjoying a cup of Earl Grey, hot during this episode and there is the occasional tea slurping noise, as well as pug breathing noises throughout. That's Frankie.

In case you forgot what was happening, Grizznacht, Jean Luc and Nicky, played by myself (Matt), Andrew, and Gino were investigating the theft of a magical artifact that is coveted by both the vampire crime boss of the city, Sigismind, and the Prince of the city. The party is right now exploring an underground Nosferatu city.

This is the fourth and final episode of our Vampire the Requiem series. Previous episodes below:

I personally prefer the flavor of the Masquerade over the Requiem, and I think I'm going to push for that as the Vampire game system of choice going forward. I'd be interested to hear what everyone else's opinion is on this: leave a comment if you'd like

I'd just like to say that if anyone was waiting for this episode, I know that it is 6 months late. We've had a variety of personal problems, but I am happy to say that I think I will be able to be much closer to on track with our podcast.

In case you forgot what was happening, Grizznacht, Jean Luc and Nicky, played by myself (Matt), Andrew, and Gino were investigating the theft of a magical artifact that is coveted by both the vampire crime boss of the city, Sigismind, and the Prince of the city. In our very last episode, we found Sigismind pinned with a stake, betrayed by his closest associate.

I have no idea if I am spelling Sigismind the way Chris intended...

This will be the third of five episodes of Vampire the Requiem. Tune in next week or thereabouts for more information on what will be next for us! I am also hard at work putting together the first few episodes of our Lamentations of the Flame Princess campaign.

Andrew and Matt discuss the nutty Japanese surrealist haunted house film House. (Andrew loves it) Seven Japanese schoolgirls travel to an aunt's house - the aunt, however, turns out to be an undead ghost. The movie's bizarre editing choices and camera tricks make it a real trip to observe. It has legitimately thematic depth that other movies like this sometimes lack, touching briefly on the effect of WWII on the Japanese. Somehow this turned into our longest episode ever. We talk about information found in The House wikipedia article a lot. Be warned -- we also discuss comics for a good 15 minutes in the middle of this episode. We watched the fabulous Criterion Collection version of House. The campy, compact classic really rubbed Andrew the wrong way. Can't really say why.

This film was directed by William Castle, and stars Vincent Price as Frederick Loren and Carol Ohmart as Annabelle Loren The blind caretaker, one of a series of red herrings built into the plot of the House on Haunted Hill, was Andrew's favorite part. Andrew found the film's 96% on Rotten Tomatoes to be absurd. For more of Andrew's wildly unfounded opinions, please consult our podcast episode. This episode saw the introduction of Steven Riley as Alphonse Callahan. Steven was a long time fixture of our gaming group and you may here his voice again in the future. I apologize - in episode 1, I named the Liliana Bunt character "Mina Westernra" but I must have decided that name was foolish for episode 2. I also apologize - my voice got a little garbled in this episode but I think you can still figure out what's going on. You can find me on twitter with any questions. After this seven part series, we recorded all our audio separately and you will definitely notice the difference.

This month, Andrew and Matt discuss the Corman/Price Lovecraft/Poe mashup "The Haunted Palace". Matt struggles through his Massachusetts accent to pronounce "era"! Andrew revels in the ham faced babies!

The Haunted Palace was released in 1963 - it is an adaptation of the HP Lovecraft story "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" and the first feature film to include references to Lovecraftian touchstones like "The Necronomicon" and Cthulhu. AIP named it "The Haunted Palace" to create continuity with it and the other films in the Corman/Price series. It fits nicely in with the others - the story is gothic and lends itself nicely to the typical set work and Price scenery chewing that characterized the series. Despite some stylistic differences with the Lovecraft story, in the end, (I think) it turns out to be one of the better Lovecraft adaptations available. Note that the same story was also filmed in 1991 by Dan O'Bannon as The Resurrected, which is a worthy film bogged down by some unfortunate period touches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YPz0unE4xo

The Pit and the Pendulum is notable for for being part of the classic Corman/Price series of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations that was kicked off by The Fall of the House of Usher.

Great paintings in the 1961 production of The Pit and the Pendulum

The movies were characterized by strong performances by Price, in his classic scenery chewing manner and absolutely lavish set design. The violence and sex of these productions mirrored the Hammer movies coming out of England around the same time.

Barbara Steele plays one of the female leads. In our podcast episode, I talk briefly about her role in Curse of the Crimson Altar.

The Black Cat is pretty much one of my personal favorite horror movies of all time. It was notable at the time of its release for featuring the two most famous horror stars working at the time, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. The film’s director, Edgar G Ulmer, is famous mainly for this film, and it’s easy to see why. The style and Weirdness of the film are undeniable.
