Not so long ago, the Mexican landscape of drug traffickers was very different. While these groups existed, they did so under the cover of a much more stable regime. A partisan dictatorship who engaged in collusion on every level and granted them deals that paradoxically lead to a more peaceful sphere. This all changed in the year 2000, but as Claudia Pfeifer Cruz describes in her thesis, many facets of these relationships have yet to be discovered. Yet, in the meantime, a far more impactful conflict was brewing. Manuel Dorion-Soulié focused on the impact of those very same cars on foreign policy in the middle east for his doctoral thesis. His research through archives from all sources illustrates the rise of car culture in Europe, and the repercussions that driving to the supermarket can have.
