However, to enable students to grow, we also have to prioritize their social and emotional wellbeing. Thanks to the support of the Avon-Washington Township Community and the passage of our operating referendum, we have been able to add highly qualified school counselors and social workers to the team. Since 2018, we averaged 1 counselor to 500 students. Today, the span of care has improved to 320 students per counselor/social worker. It's National School Counseling Week. In honor of the occasion, Dr. Wyndham sits down for a conversation with three members of our School Counseling team: School Counseling and Mental Wellness Coordinator Krista Fay, Pine Tree Elementary School Counselor Amber Wetzel, and Avon High School Director of School Counseling Candace Gadomski-Emmert. From helping open ketchup packets in kindergarten lunch to helping seniors fill their final academic requirements before graduation — and everything in between — our School Counselors and Social Workers are at the heart of our mission to help all students succeed. To honor the nearly 300 students who march in the band — along with the dozens of directors and hundreds of parents and volunteers who make the program hum — the Town of Avon declared Friday, December 12, as Avon Marching Black & Gold Day. To honor the Marching Black & Gold's success this season and their tradition of excellence, Dr. Wyndham has a conversation with Director Matt Harloff and AHS Seniors/Drum Majors Avery McDavid and Daniel Rieger. Find out how the band has grown over the last 30 years, what goes into creating a successful band program, what the students' schedules look like during band season, and what lessons and experiences students are carrying with them beyond their time at AHS. Early in November, our community voted to renew our 2018 operating referendum. As we head into late November and think about all that we’re thankful for as a school corporation, that certainly rises to the top of the list. We are very grateful that we get to serve in a community that supports our schools in such a meaningful way, voting to allow us to maintain competitive pay for teachers, smaller class sizes, and opportunities for our students. An incredible team of about 40 people worked together over the last three months to help educate our community about the referendum renewal. Retired Avon Schools Superintendent Dr. Maggie Hoernemann and Hendricks Regional Health COO/Avon parent Shane Sommers co-chaired that effort. Maggie and Shane join Dr. Wyndham to talk about the project, share lessons learned, and thank the community for turning out on behalf of Avon's 11,000 students and 1,600 employees. Over the last two years, students, parents/caregivers, employees, and community members have helped district leaders adopt a plan that will enable us to make room for more students. To make this plan a reality, it is necessary to redistrict our schools that serve students in kindergarten through 8th-grade for the start of the 2025-26 school year. Parent and staff input has continued to guide this process. This fall, a 100-member redistricting committee comprised of parents/caregivers, school employees, and district leaders has selected school boundary models and school start- and end-times scenarios. They're ready for community input and, ultimately, a recommendation to the Avon Board of School Trustees. Dr. Wyndham is joined by Assistant Superintendents Dr. Michael Sullivan and Carrie Alday to talk about the highlights and takeaways from the project. They share about the committee members' investments in the process, surprising lessons learned along the way, and why it was so helpful to hear from so many diverse perspectives. This week, we conducted short interviews with teachers and administrators across the district. We thought it would be inspiring and appropriate to hear from them during Teacher Appreciation Week. Our question was simple: Who was your favorite teacher? It was fun to see their faces light up as they thought back to their most impactful teachers and classroom experiences. A lot of them had a difficult time choosing just one teacher. Most of them highlighted the educators who played the biggest role in them choosing a career in education. Several pointed out teachers who – through force of relationship – simply never gave up on them. Some mentioned teachers who inspired a love of a particular subject, teachers who saw potential in them that they didn’t know they possessed, and teachers whose methods they have adopted in their own classrooms. A major area students and staff will be able to experience and enjoy when they come back from break is located on the south side of the school. The soon-to-open space includes classrooms, a new entry, and -- most notably -- a new weight room for Advanced Physical Conditioning (APC) classes and student-athlete workouts. Including before- and after-school sessions and all seven class periods, the current AHS weight room is used by nearly 700 students each day, making it one of the busiest and least suitable areas of the building. In this episode, Dr. Wyndham enjoys a conversation with student-athletes Nevaeh, Jayana, Fawzy, and Cannon about their workout and APC experiences. Then, they're joined by Athletic Director Jason Young and Strength and Conditioning Coaches Chris Stevenson and Craig Ray to talk about what drew them to Avon and their goal of involving every student at AHS who wants to get stronger, faster, and healthier.
