Karen Shock’s love for writing began when she received her first diary as a young girl. The lock and key made it easy for her to tell the diary some honest, dramatic truths about herself. All these years later, she still loves to put pen to paper and write out her deepest longings, wildest dreams, and biggest fears. The only difference now is there is no longer a lock and key on her thoughts. As time went on, she began to understand that putting the truth out there for the whole world to read might be scary, but the vulnerability was worth the risk. She wants readers to know that they are not alone. Karen lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana with her husband Kevin. They have four adult children, 4 grandchildren and one on the way. She is currently a writer for Patheos and has her first book, Too Much and Not Enough, coming out on April 18th.

Josh Lawson lives with his family in Wheelersburg Ohio, where he serves his community in a variety of roles as recovery program coordinator for the Shawnee State University Kricker Innovation Hub. He works to connect people in recovery with entrepreneurial skills and services that will help them succeed in life. He also chairs the faith-based sub community of Scioto Connect the counties local opioid consortium where he consults with faith communities on how to support people who use drugs and those in recovery. As an author he recently published his first book The Face of Addiction which tells the story of 12 people in Southern Ohio who have been impacted by the opioid overdose crisis. In his follow up book Drugs and Jesus which is set to release in 2022 will be the first of its kind to present a call to action for people of faith to engage in the work of harm reduction.

He is the Lead Translator and Project Manager of the First Nations Version New Testament published by IinterVarsity Press and the "Chief" of Rain Ministries, a nonprofit organization based in Arizona, Terry has also been the Director of Spiritual Growth and Leadership Development with Native InterVarsity since June of 2020.

Beginning in the year 2000 Terry and his wife Darlene have invested their lives in sharing the message of Jesus with the First Nations people of Turtle Island (North America).

Releasing on some of dance music’s top labels, with a recent focus on his own Dissident Music imprint, Noel’s productions make regular appearances in Beatport’s top ten genre charts, and see support from the world’s top DJs. Over the years, his work has been heard on labels such as Black Hole, Spinnin’, Armada, Perfecto, High Contrast, Lost Language, Coldharbour, Mute, Dissident and dozens more. He has remixed and worked with artists like Erasure, Nadia Ali, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Matt Darey, Soul In The Machine (with Twin Peaks star Chrysta Bell), and Markus Schulz. Evolving to deeper sounds, Noel’s label, Dissident Music, was first launched in 2007 and produced a number of hits throughout the ensuing 7 years. Recently relaunched as part of Miami’s Essential Media Group, Dissident has gone from strength to strength, with nearly a dozen Beatport top ten chart showings in as many months. As a DJ, this one-time Tiesto tour-mate has manned the booth at some of the world’s best clubs and festivals, sharing the stage with some of electronic music’s top names. It isn’t always the case that after this many years, an underground artist remains as creative and relevant as Noel has. But between his productions, his label, and his expertise behind the decks, Noel is proving without question that the best is yet to come.

1994 Gary along with his family immigrated to Australia with a passion to establish strong communities of faith.

Gary alongside his wife Debbie are currently the senior leaders of the Friends First community in Melbourne. They have travelled extensively preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom message in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea and India. They have two grown children; Joel married to Lana and David married to Dahna, and now a beautiful grand-daughter Emily.

Anthony Bartlett read philosophy and theology at Heythrop Athaneum in Oxfordshire, England, and at London University. Following his ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood he spent a year studying in Rome.After ten years of ministry, he resigned the official priesthood. In this period of transition he lived in a community of prayer near Assisi in Italy, under the guidance of writer and teacher, Carlo Carretto. The experience around Carretto welcomed many different individuals at the crossroads of traditional Catholicism and the search for fresh perspective and spiritual practice. It was natural that news of a major recent book by René Girard and his extraordinary cross-disciplinary understanding of Christianity should arrive among members of this group. The seed of information planted then eventually matured into contact between Tony and James Williams, professor of the Hebrew Bible in the Syracuse University Department of Religion and prominent Girardian scholar. Francois is an active speaker and has written for HuffPost, Sojourners, The Hill, the Christian Century, and Religion Dispatches. She is also a religious deconstruction & purity culture recovery coach, and the founder and president Break Free Together, a not-for-profit organization serving individuals recovering from gender- and sexuality-based religious trauma.

Linda has spoken around the world from the TEDx stage to The Apollo’s Women of the World Festival. Her work has been featured by the New York Times, NPR, CBS, NBC, Elle Magazine, and over 150 other outlets. Linda is a trained Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education facilitator, and holds an interdisciplinary Masters degree in gender, sexuality and religion from New York University.

Linda has worked in the social change sector for over two decades. Her background includes founding a program on how to find and follow your purpose used in over 200 universities for the social entrepreneurship incubator, Echoing Green, and working with million dollar donors supporting women and girls through Women Moving Millions.

Linda is married to a writer and social change agent who inspires her every day, and has a daughter in diapers and another in college.

He was a minister a district worker and church administrator for 20 years in an evangelical conservative denomination. he left church in 2005 has worked secularly since then. He left church entirely in 2008 while working through a period of deconstruction/reconstruction. He returned to church in 2018 in an Anglican church that focuses on social justice and is embracing and affirming of the LGBTQIA+ community. He is an ally for the gay community and also an ally for the indigenous community. His wife is Cherokee and is a social worker to indigenous families. He lives in Ottawa Canada. Barton has no books to sell, no programs to promote. What you hear is what you get.

In this episode we chat with Ben DeLong.

Here is his bio in his own words: I was born in Iowa, grew up as a pastor’s kid, and eventually became a pastor myself. What I later learned was that becoming a pastor was my way of coping with wounds and trauma that had built up within me since childhood. I have since given up being a pastor and turned my focus to becoming an author. My lovely wife has been a steady presence in my life. We were married in 2005 and adopted our son in 2019. They have been the greatest teachers in my life as I’ve journeyed toward a greater sense of wholeness. I love writing, and I love exploring the inner journey. I combine these two passions in my books to help give people hope to make the next step in their own story. I invite you to explore my work and see what you are inspired to move toward in life.

John Dominic Crossan is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, DePaul University, Chicago. He has written twenty books on the historical Jesus in the last thirty years, four of which have become national religious bestsellers: The Historical Jesus (1991), Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography (1994), Who Killed Jesus (1995), and The Birth of Christianity (1998). His latest book Render Unto Caesar was released in March of this year. He is a former co-chair of the Jesus Seminar, and a former chair of the Historical Jesus Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, an international scholarly association for biblical study based in the United States.

Dr. Erin K. Vearncombe is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, appointed to the Office of the Dean. She received her Ph.D. in a collaborative program at the University of Toronto between the Department for the Study of Religion and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. A specialist in writing instruction, Erin worked for five years as a faculty member of the Princeton Writing Program at Princeton University, and is currently designing a program for the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto that will ease the transition to university-level writing for incoming undergraduate students. Her research specialty is the social origins and histories of Jesus movements in the first centuries of the common era, with a particular focus on practices of dress.

Bernard Brandon Scott is the author and editor of many books, including The Real Paul: Recovering His Radical Challenge and The Trouble with Resurrection. A charter member of the Jesus Seminar, he is chair of Westar’s Christianity Seminar. He served as chair of the Bible in Ancient and Modern Media Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, as well as a member of several SBL Seminars including the Parable Seminar and Historical Jesus Seminar. He holds an A.B. from St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, an M.A. from Miami University, and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.

Hal Taussig recently retired as Professor of New Testament at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He lectures around the country and world. The editor of the award-winning A New New Testament (2013), United Methodist minister, and author of fourteen books, his mediography includes The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Daily Show, People Magazine, Newsweek Magazine, National Public Radio, the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC, the Bob Edwards Show on Sirius Radio, The History Channel, and the Washington Post.

In this episode we chat with Amy Courts.

Amy Courts is a singer-songwriter, musician, writer, activist, and Seminarian based in Minneapolis, MN where she lives with her husband and son. Amy grew up in Denver, CO the youngest of four preacher's daughters and, after graduating in 2003 with her B.A. in Biblical Studies, moved to Nashville, TN where she independently produced and released two albums and toured with Jennifer Knapp and Derek Webb. After a near-death childbirth experience in 2011, she and her family moved to Minneapolis where she spent the next five years as a stay-home mom, worship leader, and singer-for-hire.
In 2017, after a six year hiatus from creating and performing original music, she and her husband fulfilled a decade-long dream of co-creating and -producing a collaborative album as the duo Fireworks on Ferris Wheels for which they enjoyed critical acclaim and indie radio success. Amy also performs in a number of Twin Cities based bands, including with world-renowned guitarist Billy McLaughlin as part of Simple Gifts and Young and the Rest.
In the fall of 2018, Amy was offered a full-ride scholarship to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN where she is currently earning her Master of Divinity in Justice & Reconciliation while working with numerous local arts-based, humanitarian, religious, and para-church organizations to address systemic injustices against marginalized communities through musical, theological, and political activism centered on economic, environmental, healthcare, and education justice.

I will let Ellen introduce herself. Allow me to introduce myself with a few miscellaneous thoughts:

I am a family-prioritizing, coffee-drinking, truth-telling, authenticity-seeking, list-making, God-following, world-loving, ambiverted, former closet writer. The words laid back have never been used to describe me. I am an unabashed over-user of hashtags and emojis. The message written on my heart is one of identity; I am passionate about living authentically as the person I was created to be and helping others to do likewise…even in the midst of this gauntlet that is life.

I live on the east coast of Canada with my family. My teenagers are occasionally mind-boggling, and entirely magnificent. In addition to writing, I teach French to High School students…and all remaining hours are, quite literally, spent in my vehicle, driving the teenagers to hockey practices, rehearsals, horseback riding, and to visit friends. It’s a full, imperfect and wonderful life.

Dr. Robyn Henderson-Espinoza is a TransQueer Activist, Latinx Scholar, and Politicized Theologian working in the borderlands of church and faith communities, social change movements, and higher education institutions. Important to note about Dr. Robyn is that they are a non-binary Transgender Latinx who is trained as a constructive philosophical theologian and holds a PhD in Religion from the University of Denver. They attended seminary at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary on the campus of Northwestern University. Dr. Robyn teaches in the field of theology and ethics, while also is engaged in the work of social change by participating in varying social justice projects. Dr. Robyn is the Founder of the Activist Theology Project, a collaborative project working to incubate sustainable change in innovative ways using advocacy, art, somatics, and story-telling.

Here is James' bio in his own words.

I am a Bible teacher, speaker, blogger, podcaster, soon-to-be author. And I am a “Jesus mindset”coach. Since October 2008 I have conducted weekly Bible studies at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, CT. I give talks and conduct workshops on the Bible covering a wide range of topics to churches and groups as well as at the prison. I grew up in Amarillo, Texas and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In high school I became dis-satisfied with some of the things I was being taught there and started going to the Christian Science church, which I have been a member of since. Currently I live in Bethel, CT with my wife, Polly Castor. We have three grown children, which we homeschooled all the way through high school. I was a full-time stay-at-home dad for 10 years when we first started our family. I love to garden and hike in my spare time. I never fit into the corporate world, but have done sales and marketing and voice-over work, which led me to want to share my message instead of someone else's. So, I started The Bible Speaks to You Podcast in the fall of 2019, to explore the here-and-nowness of the kingdom of heaven and how it impacts the way we live our daily lives. The purpose of my podcast is to get back to the original Christianity of Jesus without all the things we have added in the last 2,000 years, to rediscover our right and our ability to think, act, pray, and heal like Jesus did. I am on a journey to discover our right and ability to embrace this mindset of Jesus, to see ourselves through the lens of Christ’s love, and live our lives from the perspective of Jesus’s promise that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. I help others discover this for themselves as well.

Walking the Camino with Alexander John Shaia

We are honored to have back with us - Alexander John Shaia.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Alexander John was part of a large extended family that had emigrated from Lebanon a generation previously. He grew up immersed in the ancient traditions of Middle Eastern Christianity (Maronite Catholicism) and was expected to become a priest, a family tradition since the year 1300. He was led otherwise.

Alexander John attended the University of Notre Dame and received a degree in Cultural Anthropology. Next came a brief time in seminary followed by a Master’s in Counseling Education, a Master’s in Religious Education, a graduate certificate in Pastoral Psychotherapy, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

His extensive psychological training across many modalities finally led him to Switzerland where he studied with the Jungian Analyst and founder of Sandplay Psychotherapy, Dora Maria Kalff. Alexander John became the first US man admitted to the International Society for Sandplay Therapy and continues to serve as a senior Certified Teaching Member of the organization.

Returning to the United States, he undertook years of private practice, teaching, parish and retreat ministry and further study. Integrating his life-long practice of prayer with many cross-disciplines—anthropology, psychology, spirituality, and ritual work—has shaped him into a unique thought-leader and a widely sought consultant, trainer, and inspiring keynote speaker.

Then in 2000, Alexander John’s professional life expanded from being primarily a speaker to also that of an author, now with some eight books and more in the works.

He lives in the high Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico and the wild Atlantic coast of Northwest Spain. A perfect day finds him in the presence of ancient trees, massive stones, his dog and a book of poetry.

Ms. Harper earned her Masters degree in Human Rights from Columbia University in New York City, and served as Sojourners Chief Church Engagement Officer. In this capacity, she fasted for 22 days as a core faster in 2013 with the immigration reform Fast for Families. She trained and catalyzed evangelicals in St. Louis and Baltimore to engage the 2014 push for justice in Ferguson and the 2015 healing process in Baltimore, and she educated faith leaders in South Africa to pull the levers of their new democracy toward racial equity and economic inclusion.

After twenty-two years of church ministry, as a director of music and artistic ministries, Carol Wimmer felt a call that led her away from the institutional model of the church. From 1996 to 2000, she experienced an intense time of spiritual growth. The new insights opened the door to fresh theological perspectives in three areas of human concern: time, language, and the organization of God’s people.

Believing that personal insight must be grounded in credible scholarship, Carol entered the field of biblical research as an independent researcher. Her studies culminated in the presentation of several academic papers within the Society of Biblical Literature. She has published three books to date and is planning to publish her fourth book soon. She hopes her research will help, in some small way, to reorient the focus of the collective human spirit in the areas of time, language and organization. Carol writes from a visionary perspective. She offers spiritual insights gained through the lens of light, color and images of Creation.

Sara Cunningham is an author, activist, and founder of the non-profit organization Free Mom Hugs. Her journey is a surprising one that began in conservative Oklahoma, when her son, Parker, came out as gay. As a woman of faith, Sara wrestled with the news until she began to study, research, and reconcile the two worlds. This journey resulted in her book How We Sleep at Night. She found herself on a journey “from the church to the Pride parade,” falling in love with the LGBTQIA+ community. In the wake of beautiful glitter-covered hugs and heart-breaking horror stories, the mission of Free Mom Hugs began. Simple acts of love and acceptance turned into a viral sensation, and Sara knew she had the opportunity to lead impactful change.

I wear several different hats to cover my coarse Chinese hair, which requires too much product to tame:

Writer, reporter, editor. Co-curator and co-host, with Sarah Bessey, Of Evolving Faith. Editor-at-large at Travel & Leisure. Occasional preacher. Teacher in residence at Crosspointe Church. Ordinand in the Reformed Church in America (RCA). Cook, gardener, and dog walker to Fozzie in Michigan, where my husband and I moved last year. (First time living in the Midwest. Snow tires are a revelation!)

Before that, I was a seminarian at Princeton Theological Seminary, where I worked as a farmhand at PTS’s Farminary. Don’t be deceived… When I got to the Farminary, a 21-acre experiment in sustainable agriculture that doubles as the world’s best classroom, I didn’t know anything about farming, and I had more experience killing plants than nurturing them. But my work on the farm changed me. More than anything else in my life, that land taught me about the story of life, death, and new life that God has written into creation.

Niq's bio in his own words:

The funky spelling is my dad’s fault, but it’s just pronounced like your favorite Christmas saint. I grew up in the good ole Pacific Northwest which means I like doing stuff outside—alpine climbing, sailing, surfing, skiing, cycling, et cetera.

I studied religion in college (Walla Walla University), worked as a pastor while I went to seminary (Grand Canyon Theological Seminary), and now I’m a postgrad studying the intersectionality between philosophy, science, and religion (University of Edinburgh). I’m interested in lots of things, including religious pluralism, philosophy of science and religion, eschatology, diversity, and ethics, which all gravitate around the human perception of God.

I wrote a book about God too, it’s called Only Love: How Everything Was, Is, and Will Be. It basically advocates for a more open-minded view of God and, subsequently, a more inclusive view of each other. I like it. You might too.

How the advent of Protestantism affected women’s roles in the church has carried her research beyond medieval Catholicism into the world of early modern Baptists.

Reframing Paul with Douglas Campbell

In this episode we continue our conversation with Douglas Campbell.

Douglas was born in London but raised a New Zealander. He did his undergraduate degree in Political Philosophy at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and his graduate degrees in Religious Studies at the University of Toronto in Canada, where he was supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship. He wrote his thesis on Romans 3:21-26 under the direction of Richard Longenecker. His first academic post was in Religious Studies at his alma mater, the University of Otago (1989-96). After seven years he went to teach in Theology and Religious Studies at King's College London (1996-2003), and after another seven years was hired into his current teaching position at Duke Divinity School, where he is now a Professor of New Testament and directs the Prison Studies program. Since arriving at Duke in 2003 he has published four books on the apostle Paul, with a fifth, reasonably large, book due to arrive in the book shops in November 2019. Douglas has two adult children, and is a keen supporter of the arts, as his wife, Rachel, is a painter. He loves the warm weather of North Carolina, and currently lives in downtown Durham with two cats, a dog, and his wife's chickens. Despite qualms in terms of a Christian virtue ethic, he remains passionate about international politics and international rugby.

Mercy Aiken made Israel and Palestine lived intermittently in Bethlehem, Palestine, from September 2015 to the summer of 2020. Prior to this, she worked many years as a writer and leader in various web-based ministries and leadership in local churches.
