I was like wow, this is what innovation really comes down to; these core principles and core educational values of 1: empathy, 2: syntheses, 3: ideation, and then it goes into prototyping and testing," explains Ngo, "I was trying to wrap my head around what have we been doing with ProtoHack and understanding that this model existed, we saw that this entire time, we were focused so much on the ideas. In a similar way to what education looks like today, we were focused on outcomes, ideas and solutions. And I really wanted to figure out a way that we could make students, and in this case aspiring entrepreneurs, really fall in love with the problems themselves."

Mike Volker of New Ventures BC

Mike Volker of New Ventures BC joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss New Ventures BC, its venture acceleration program, and the BCIC-New Ventures Competition.

"The ideal participant would be an individual participant or group of indivuduals that think they have something that has huge potential in the marketplace. And, they need some guidance, they need some help figuring out how to take their idea and commercialize it," Volker explains. "The capital is a very important part of it, because a lot of the mentors in the New Ventures BC program are investors; business angels, who invest in startup companies."

"In addition to learning about business, and potentially winning the prize money, which can be quite substantial - first prize is more than $100,000, and that's cash, no-strings attached. And that of itself is attractive. But even more attractive is that not just the winner, but the runners up and the other companies that compete in the competition now have access to these investors who can get them launched."

With mentors such as Peter Jennings co-founder of VisiCorp, the company that launched the first killer app, a $100,000 no-strings first-place prize, and a very modest entrance fee, the only reason someone wouldn't want to take advantange of the programs and competition is probably because they just don't know about it.

Jeffery Walsh, EtherParty Developer

VanBex, a team of blockchain consultants and experts does client work, helping with development, marketing for businesses that want to integrate blockchain, smart contracts, crowdfunding and also has their own projects.

EtherParty is a VanBex project that helps by making smart contracts easier to use. Smart contracts exist on the Ethereum blockchain. EtherParty is like the Wix or Squarespace of smart contracts; an app you can use to click through and make your own.

Jeffery Walsh, fullstack developer of EtherParty joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss VanBex, EtherParty, blockchain development for both cryptocurrency and other uses.

With regards to what blockchain is, "I just think of it as computers agreeing on something," says Walsh. "There's a bunch of computers, and they're all running the same code. They agree on something, and that can be entered into a public ledger, because everybody agreed."

Joni Brennan, President of DIACC

Joni Brennan, president of the Digital Identification and Authentication Council of Canada joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss digital identity, and some of the challenges, dangers, and benefits associated with it.

Brennan is working on trying to solve some of the problems with digital identity, such as storage of personal information across multiple sites, including photocopies of driver's licenses, having too many user ids and passwords, and many breaches of data, in ways that allow us to unlock opportunities for Canadians, and globally. What we do here in Canada, the DIACC hopes to bring out across the digital economy and to the world.

An identity could be defined as a passport, or a permanent residency card. Brennan says she likes to think of an identity as being a construct of a village. When answering the question of who I am, a large part of the answer is based upon making a claim that we are something, and having that claim reinforced by a third party, often dependent on the context. In the digital world, there are still many challenges in moving from one context to the next.

Within the digital identity landscape, the focus for people working on these issues, has shifted to what is called verified claims. Claims can be age, address, type of entity. Verifying these specific claims can be more interesting than verifying all of the potential attributes that could possibly go into making an identity. For example, we might simply need to know, whether a person is of age to purchase liquor.

If we focus on answering the question of whether a given entity has access, we can also have data minimization, which Brennan describes as being not only a privacy measure, but also a security measure. It then becomes a question of, what is the smallest amount of information that can be provided, then verified to obtain access.

Special guests Manie and MaRi Eagar of Digital Futures, who conducted the first study in Canada that set out to discover competitive drivers to build and further develop the ecosystem that supports Vancouver, BC, and Canada, as a global Blockchain and FinTech hub. And who have more associations and accomplishments than can easily be listed in an introduction join host Drew Ogryzek to discuss blockchain, cryptocurrencies and ICOs, and their implications to Canadians and the world.

Blockchain Association of Canada Chairman, Manie Eagar, a contrinuting author of The Fintech Book explains that the BAC is a Canada-wide membership or community representation at a provincial and federal level, giving everybody a voice and participation opportunity in the debate on what blockchain is, how it can be applied, on the one-side through engaging with regulators and bankers on how this technology can make a difference. And on the other side, how it could disrupt the way we do business; literally our business models at the very core, if decentralist principles are applied.

MaRi Eagar says that a lot of solutions, and whitepapers for blockchain based solutions are trying to crack the code of how to create decision making in a different way through coding thinking into an algorithm. Some of the questions aiming to be solved bring up old philosophical debates, such as who should be able to vote, and how much weight an individual's vote should have.

Being very interested in how we might be able to achieve deep democracy, MaRi Eager explains that on the whole, we still seem to think that if everyone votes, then everyone will be happy. At the moment, if we have a minority then someone loses. How to deal with a minority vote and really how to be inclusive could be questions answered by blockchain technology.

Special guest Dan Garfield, VP of Marketing at Codefresh joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss continuous deployment with Codefresh, a CI/CD (continuous integration and deployment) platform with a focus on providing end-to-end automation for everything containers and Kubernetes. Historically looking at how automation has been done, there has been a lot of scripting, and a lot of duplication of work; people are building the same machines over and over again, with different projects.

Special Guest Dieter Shirley of AxiomZen

Special guest Dieter Shirley of AxiomZen joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss blockchain, cryptocurrency, and ICOs. AxiomZen is a company that is always investigating new technologies, building their own startups, partnering with external investors to build startups with them, building companies for fortune 500 companies and other industry groups. For AxiomZen, breaking new ground, rather than building "me too" products is the norm. Naturally, blockchain is something they have had their eyes on since day one.

Shirley describes blockchain as a really clever technology, that is fundamentally a way of storing a series of transactions or events in a way that any sized group of people can always agree on what's in that log without any possibility of the history of that log being changed.

Bitcoin introduced the public blockchain, basically stating that because we have this technology that lets us have an indelible log of transactions that everyone agrees have occurred, we don't need a bank, explains Shirley.

Shirley believes the core technology of blockchain, being distributed publicly is disruptive because it is basically saying we don't need banks, or necessarily government to define currency for us. We can do everything in the cloud, in a decentralized way where no one is in charge, but the code.

Special Guest Boris Mann of FrontierFoundry

Special Guest Boris Mann of FrontierFoundry joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss blockchain, cryptocurrency and ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings). Mann is an active contributor to helping grow Vancouver's technical community, he is involved in open source, running "geek meetups," and started FrontierFroundry with Adrian Jonklaas in March of 2017.

FrontierFoundry was concieved with the question in mind, "What kind of company can we build in Vancouver that really has the whole world as its customers; that goes global from day one?" and thinking of areas of frontier technology, a very broad space where there's not a lot of concensus or understanding as to what successful companies in this space look like.

This space includes blockchain, augmented reality, and machine learning, and other emerging tech. How are companies in this space funded? How are they created? Who are their customers?

Mann explains that blockchain really has three definitions:

• The computer science innovation of Merkel Tree, and crypto algorithms that enable this concept of a blockchain
• Instances of public blockchain, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum
• The blockchain ethos of decentralization, trustlessness, permissionless innovation, and other interesting aspects as a result of global, decentralized networks

Definitions, Mann attributes to Lisa Cheng, cofounder of Vanbex and has written about in the FrontierFoundry blog.

Mann defines ICOs as ways of offering blockchain tokens or coins to people to buy into that will then fund building a project in some way.

According to Mann, the big thing that has happened in the last six to nine months or so, is that the Ethereum blockchain has the ability to do programming on the chain and create coins or tokens directly, without having to run an entire separate codebase. This kind of bootstrapping on Ethereum lowers the barrier for entry makes it easy for people to create and offer tokens to a global audience that people can buy to fund projects, which has resulted in some record breaking funding.

With open source as a foundation of the ethos of blockchain, various individuals collaborate on open source code repositories that actually run the core servers and clients of the blockchains and miners. Because these codebases are written in low level languages such as C and C++, which takes a fair level of expertise combined with solid computer science knowledge in efficiently implementing cryptographic algorithms, while making sure they are secure and performant; these networks have to run world wide. So, the level of effort to clone the codebase, and make changes that are both different enough from the initial codebase, and secure and highly performant, means it takes an entire stack of C/C++ programmers just to get started.

In contrast to that, doing an Ethereum ERC20 Token (a formalized standard for Ethereum tokens), can be done in an afternoon. That won't necessarily mean it is fully secure or doesn't have bugs, but it's much easier to leverage this existing technology, and standard than to develop a completely new blockchain.

Special Guest Llew Morkel of ProsperiProp

Special Guest Llew Morkel of ProsperiProp in South Africa joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings).

Founder of ProsperiProp, a company currently in the process of an ICO (Initial Coin Offering), Morkel says the idea is to make it possible for a person with as little as USD $2.00 to get involved with property investment. There's often quite a high dollar bar, or minimum investment to get involved with property investment, so he sees this as a big game changer.

Morkel says Bitcoin was the very first blockchain coin. It was the very first way of transacting and paying digitally. The open source Bitcoin currency and blockchain acts as the reference. One can download that source code and start their own coin. When Ethereum copied it and started the Ethereum chain, then decided to better it in a way with smart contracts.

Bitcoin and Ethereum are payment systems, which makes them "coins," while ProsperiProp has an asset backed item which does not run on its own blockchain, and that makes it a token, explains Morkel.

With all the hype around ICOs circulating, Morkel says some things to take into consideration, while evaluating whether to buy into a company's ICO are:

Read the whitepaper: a whitepaper is like a business plan for technology, where everything the business plans on doing is written in detail. You can scrutinize that document to see exactly where it comes from. If that whitepaper does not make sense, then that's the first alarm bell.

The team involved: does the team have experience in what they're doing, are they capable of being validated, and do you trust the people involved?

Are the people involved open to public media: Often people who want to scam you out of a few dollars will not go into the media, because they do not want to be seen or known.

Special Guest Barinder Rasode, President and CEO of NICHE Canada, and Co-Founder of She Talks joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss cannabis legalization in Canada, and how NICHE Canada (National Institute for Cannabis Health and Education) fits in.

Initially, Rasode was opposed to the proliferation of cannabis dispensaries, but seeing those who are affected in positive ways helped her change perspectives, and she now heads NICHE Canada, an organization that aims to operationalize the federal government commissioned cannabis legalization and regulation taskforce report by ensuring all stakeholders during and after the process are equipped in their fields to manage this new regime.

Rasode says NICHE has a partnership with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), with the CACP (Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police), and other regulatory bodies that are concerned about product safetly and testing for intoxication levels. There are a lot of issues to be dealt with from economic, medical, and regulatory and public safety points of view. NICHE is working to bring all three levels of government and industry together to get them on the same page.

Special Guest Alex Cruise, Architect/Development Manager at Splunk

Special guest Alex Cruise, Architect/Development Manager at Splunk joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss the development culture, organizational structure and some use cases for Splunk, the company that brings us log monitoring and analaysis tools and services.

Cruise explains a little about LeSS (Large Scale Scrum), and that their team has been adopting it as a means of escaping some of the failure modes of traditional small-scale agile. LeSS involves things like a unified product backlog, such that every item that a product manager deems being worthy of being worked on, goes onto the shared product backlog.

One of the main reasons for Cruise's teams to be making a transition towards LeSS is to reduce hyperspecialization. Mature organizations tend to have people who develop a great deal of expertise within a narrow field. With these hyperspecialized experts, it becomes increasingly difficult for someone new to get up to speed and be productive on a codebase where someone else is already a specialist. LeSS helps to break this coupling between individuals and teams, and particular product features they historically were experts in.

Cruise also shares his thoughts on what it means to be a senior developer, including increasingly spending more time communicating and mentoring, and doing more leadership type tasks. Additionally, this includes commenting on wiki pages, reviewing code, training, and helping people to solve their own problems, while spending less time on one's own deliverables.

The online resources use ai to help people find solutions to their problems, and even resolve disputes, with the help of the CRT (Civil Resolution Tribunal).

Salter, along with Lauryn Kerr, Expert Systems Analyst at the BC Ministry of Justice, Dispute Resolution Office gave an in-depth talk at the Vancouver Legal Hacker's meetup in June entitled: AI, Expert Systems and the Justice System: Inside BC's Civil Resolution Tribunal. In the talk, the two offer an overview of the Civil Resolution Tribunal, how it works, and insight into the background of online resolution dispute.

Guest Kevin Rockwood from Skelter Labs in South Korea, a company working on several artificial intelligence based projects joins host Drew Ogryzek. After 8 years working in Cincinnati as a software developer, Rockwood and his wife decided to move to Korea.

Having not done any research into the job market for software developers in Korea, Rockwood says attending local tech meetups, like the Seoul Elixir meetup which he currently organizes, is an excellent way to meet people and connections, and even find meaningful employment.

Programs, such as the Korean government's Tech Incubator Program for Startups or TIPS, are helping the thriving Korean startup scene.

Guest Melanie Ewan of Women in Tech World joins host Drew Ogryzek and discusses her background, the importance of increasing diversity in tech, and the Driving WinTech Canadian tour to connect women in tech.

This fall, Women in Tech (WinTech) is conducting a Canada-wide fact-finding mission to better understand and record the experiences of women in technology and to promote vibrant women in tech communities across the country.

To our knowledge, this has never been done before in Canada. There are smaller qualitative and quantitative studies and lots of anecdotal evidence of women's experiences in tech, but no one has taken on a project of this magnitude or mandate.

CEO & Founder at Porter (www.summonporter.ca) Jonathan Natavio, joins host Drew Ogryzek and shares his startup story from student to intern to founding a company.

Porter is a tech enabled consierge platform helping companies and working professionals take care of their day to day tasks. Handling chores such as dog walking, grocery shopping, alcohol delivery, Ikea purchase and assembly, and several others you might expect.

While the ease of use makes Porter a no brainer for the consumer, vendor partners find value in having more volume driven to their businesses, for free* (provided these vendor partners maintain excellent service records with Porter's customers and with their own).

Natavio started out with an idea in 2015, and launched in 2016. Starting with an idea he felt could really dominate the market, Natavio incorporated in February 2016. He admits it took him about three months to hand-craft an MVP (minimum viable product). With a background in digital marketing, Natavio reached for Wordpress, his tool of choice for the task of validating the market.

Special Guests Scott Bellware & Nathan Ladd

Host Drew Ogryzek and special guests Scott Bellware and Nathan Ladd of eventide-project.org discuss their backgrounds in computing, differences in the rapid iteration environment of a web startup using an MVC framework like Ruby on Rails, and the term "engineering" with regards to web-development versus embedded software and systems engineering or bridge building, time to feedback, and dive into eventsourcing.

The past decade of web development has, for a large part been dominated by the MVC (model-view-controller) architectural pattern. Bellware and Ladd believe that event-sourced systems architecture is a general architectural design that is applicable for most systems, not only special purpose only for fin-tech, for example. The next decade of software development may see a lot more event-sourcing, as SOA (Service-oriented architecture) becomes more mainstream with current trends towards microservices.

Bellware mentions that a major difference between traditional SOA and microservices is smart pipes, dumb services (SOA) versus dumb pipes, smart services. Eventide-project.org is a microservices stack for Ruby, developed by Bellware and Ladd, who were in Vancouver the last week of April 2017, from Austin, Texas, delivering a well-received workshop covering getting started with the project.

Malyarov, Uberti, and Ogryzek reflect on topics from biases in journalism, the notion of objectivity, the effects of socioeconomic change on journalism media consumption, and more.

In journalism, understanding that we have our biases when we're reporting, then potentially overcompensating by pointing out the other sides that could be there, may create a bias in another direction or a two-sided argument.

Public trust in media is at an all time low, but trust in particular media institutions remains high. While people in the United States distrust "the media," there is an identification with certain outlets.

Newspapers or news programs from 50 years ago had a much more standard who, what, when, where, why approach to news. Now, just given the fact that we can get so much information about breaking news events instantaneously online, journalists have to add value through their analysis. So now if you look at a newspaper, it's not who, what, when, where, why, it's so what? Why should we be caring about this?

For PressReader it's the content that drives the consumption based on the interest of its readers. There is a deliberate and conscious effort to ensure that if there are topics I'm interested in, my feed isn't just full of the particular bias I subscribe to, but the feed will show both sides. It's then up to me, as the reader, to choose what to read.

The revolution we have gone through in the past two decades have allowed us as individuals an unprecedented access to information. Something that we couldn't have fathomed how much of that information exists before, and that's really what's fueling the progress for us as a society. So, there's never going to be enough.

How do you engage with your readers beyond simply providing them an ability to comment; how do you go beyond that? There's some really clever ideas that will be featured on the next issue of The Insider on PressReader.

Special guest Keith Ippel, Co-founder and CEO of Spring Activator speaks with host Drew Ogryzek about the interdisciplinary, inter-school hackathon Startup Hacks; a non-coding hackathon competition where business and tech oriented attendees team up and collaborate together on a mobile app idea that makes a social impact. Then jump into some discussions around Spring Activator.

Spring is a startup school for entrepreneurs who want to change the world, helping people go from an idea on a napkin to about a million dollars a year in revenue. The reason they call themselves a startup school is because they have recognized that the startup world has been attracting people from the mainstream It's no longer about people with just tech backgrounds, but people with diverse range of backgrounds with some amazing ideas and they're trying to catalyze them. Incubation and acceleration is at the code of what Spring does. Headquartered in Vancouver, with city partners in over 30 cities around the world including places like Belgrade, Tokyo, Manilla, Seattle, San Francisco and others.

A large motivation for Ippel, after spending about 10 years in the tech industry was realizing that tech entrepreneurs didn't have a voice nor an impact. He also recognized that people need the tools and training and network on not only startup, but pre-launch, at-launch, post-launch, in the middle of funding, when you're doing a pivot. Creating an environment where people could get that help at any point in time at that early stage of the entrepreneurial journey.

Ippel says some of Vancouver's core characteristics are a rich post-secondary education environment, a strong focus in places like health care, fin-tech, ecommerce and marketplace, and impact business. As well as a pretty rich heritage in hardware, noting companies such as Recon Instruments and D-Wave.

Special Guest Mark Mandel, Developer Advocate for Google Cloud Platform

Our special guest this week, Mark Mandel tells us about Google Cloud Platform, some ridiculous(ly great) things you can do with cloud computing, such as create a take on rock-paper-scissors, called happy-angry-surprised, using Firebase and Cloud Vision API, where making funny faces into a webcam replaces making shapes with your hands.

Ogryzek and Mandel discuss cross-cloud failovers, and the ability to run sets of containers across clusters of machines at scale with the Kubernetes container orchestration system. And being able to orchestrate using Federation across multiple data centers, regions or even clouds for hybrid-cloud solutions.

Mandel visited Vancouver from San Fransisco and gave a presentation through the Polyglot Vancouver Meetup called Scalable Realtime Microservices with Kubernetes and gRPC. Check out the Polyglot YouTube channel for a video recording of the evening.

This week, Ogryzek pick's Dymitruk's brain on topics ranging from Event Sourcing, following particular patterns in software problem solving while remaining tech-agnostic, developing a consulting business in Vancouver's current climate, responsibly onboarding junior software developers while maintaining sane levels of productivity.

Dymitruk gives some good examples of when and why CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation) is a good pattern for software projects ranging from fin-tech to almost anything. Contrary to the notion that there is more overhead in using patterns such as DDD (Domain Driven Design), CQRS, and Event Sourcing, Dymitruk emphasizes that applying these patterns from the beginning of projects ensures a more solid foundation to build on.

Special Guest John Richardson of Ethelo Decisions

Special guest John Richardson Founder and CEO Ethelo Decisions, a social enterprise dedicated to new ways of doing group decision making, using online technology. Ethelo was born out of trying to find a way of impacting and improving democracy, and answering the question "What is democracy going to look like in 10, 15, or 20 years or even more importantly, what does it need to look like, if we're going to address the major challenges facing society today?"

With a unique technology that enables groups to make complicated decisions, Ethelo is a mix of commercial enterprise, selling that technology to government and large organizations, and a non-profit organization that provides it for free to citizens and organizations that want to engage citizens in doing democratic decision making.

Ethelo can help groups with strategy, high-value decisions like investments, or engaging the public or experts in developing the framework for legislation and regulations. They have several working demos to explore, including using Ethelo for deciding policy around marijuana legislation, international treaties, a neighborhood park, and participatory budget.

For developers interested in democracy as infrastructure, some exciting plans are on the roadmap. Open sourcing the core algorithm behind Ethelo and launching an API are scheduled for as early as sometime this year.

BC Tech Summit comes to a close, the Vancouver-based fin-tech company Koho launches to public in Canada.

Ogryzek takes an introspective look into cross-team pairing in a technology focused work environment, encouraging developers to pair with other developers and even members of QA or Product Management to ensure a higher quality of code craftsmanship, product understanding, and business value. Further, he suggests technology workers communicate openings available on their teams to peers and former colleagues with whom they have enjoyed collaborating.

Intro & Meetups Around Town

Host Drew Ogryzek opens the show with our guests Matt Visser and Graydon Bensler, partners in the an education technology SaaS Syllabi Learning Solutions for which Visser and Bensler sent out a demo to a few schools last week. This provided them with some early feedback that allows them to tweak the UI/UX visuals and some of the backend functionality to better meet their end-user's needs.

Ogryzek reflects on his week where he finds that treating the product people on his team as customers, with an "under promise, over deliver" mindset allows his team to make better estimates and provide quality software.

Visser and Bensler have been working with Adaptech Solutions, who hold a weekly meetup; DDD/CQRS/ES Practitioners, held at The Tribe coworking space in Gastown, which they recommend checking out.

A highlighted event for this week is the BC Tech Summit. Chad Leaman of the Niel Squire Society, who was on the podcast in episode 65 is putting on a half day event to build a LipSync at the BC Tech Summit.

Intro & Meetups Around Town

Drew, Alex and Lester from Advisor Websites speak about onboarding new people, and strategies for evaluting during the 3-month probationary period. Advisor Websites has been growing by about 5-8 people a year for the past several years.

One strategy tried was a "team retrospective" applied to a new member of the team, where each other member writes the good and the bad on Post-It™ notes, then review the notes as a team.

Both Drew's company and Advisor Websites have recently introduced QA teams. Drew notes that he initially felt some growing pains, seeming to have to slow down during the QA processes, but that in the end that tends to speed up the overall process, by greatly reducing the number of bugs leaked into production code. Amazon Web Services recently had some issues that may have been prevented with better QA.

Alex reviews his week, with an ongoing theme of communication. They are currently getting ready to release a new version of their product, and Alex has been focusing on getting everyone from different teams on the same page without inundating them with too much information. By including a subset of people from each department, while creating new processes, slowly introducing the rest of their teams is a big help in not impeding progress.

A highlight of Lester's week was working on Advisor Website's new internal podcast. They interview Advisor Website's digital marketer, Kirsten who has blogged about women in the financial industry.

Drew's Meetup Picks of the Week are the Vancouver Erlang & Elixir Meetup on Monday and The HTML500 on Saturday. Lester is planning on attending the Gary Vaynerchuk ManTalks on Saturday, March 18th.

Alex and Drew open the show talking about the themes of their past weeks, including communication, interrupting programmers breaking their concentration, project management meetings and red-tape, design sessions, improving processes, when to outsource versus build in-house.

Alex is currently reading Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss, and talks about a chapter in it where he interviews Marc Andreesen who says about retrospectives that he suggests never looking back, but rather always look forward.

As for the meetup picks of the week, Alex is planning on getting some R&R and Drew recommends checkout out the HackerNest Vancouver Tech Social and the OpenDataBC Vancouver Hackathon.

Special Guest Chad Leaman, Neilsquire.ca

Our special guest this week is Chad Leaman, of the Neil Squire Society. We talk about how technology helped Neil Squire back in the early 1980s, with a device that he could interface with using sip and puff gestures to produce morse code, and communicate. Sip-and-puff technology worked great on computers running MS-DOS, interfacing through morse code. With the introduction of graphical and mouse interfaces, a type of joystick also became relevant. The Joust retailing for about USD $1500.00 is one such device.

Over the last 10 or so years, touch screens, tablets, and smart-phones have become normal, and with that there are new accessibility barriers to overcome. In BC, The Neil Squire Society runs a program called Technology at Work which helps make and fund recommendations for better accommodating persons with disabilities in the workplace.

A lot of innovation, such as possibly text-messaging and TTY devices, originally began as technology for helping the disabled, but have become mainstream.

Google.org awared the Neil Squire Society an $800,000 grant to build a device called the LipSync that they are releasing as open-source. It can be built for about $250.00 for the parts. The shell is 3D printed.

Episode 62: Nikolas Badminton

On this week's podcast Drew talks about hiring incentives at his company. Alex put her node reading on hold and with help from Adaptech Solutions is building an Event Store (stores events for CQRS solutions) using node.js which so far includes creating a basic webserver. She's installed and is learning to use Vimium (Chrome extension) so that she can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate and is learning about http (hyper text transfer protocol) response headers.

For her programming environment Alex is using intellij IDEA Ultimate because it supports node.js and gives inline templates (as you type) for common structures such as line endings, parentheses and brace matching. She's also using yarn instead of npm because its better for getting the exact versions of packages and it’s more robust than npm. Plus Mozilla, Facebook and Google use it so it can't be all that bad!

Alex went to Tech Vancouver on Tuesday, January 31st which was hosted by Pindie at Mobify. Featured speakers were Darshan Kaler @dkaler CEO + Co-Founder of Tradable Bits who spoke about building a successful self-funded startup. Next up was Jessica Pautsch Founder of Mesh Food Exchange which is an intelligent match making service for the re-distribution of surplus food. Chris Randall VP, Customer Success and CX Strategy of ResponseTek spoke about finding your niche market and the value of realtime feedback. Next was Galya Westler Founder of Plazus who spoke about branded and targeted social media engagement. Last speaker of the night was Jean Lozano CTO of Media Valet speaking on their journey as a re-startup as they went from being a services based company to providing software as a service(SaaS). Key takeaways from this event were know your market and be able to address your customers pain points, be willing to define and redefine your services and company vision, and don't be afraid to pivot. Episode 60: Rob Bucci of STAT Analytics

Alex & Drew open the show talking about workplace dynamics and whether it's appropriate to use the term "guys". Drew talks about his company's new onboarding process which includes using automating testing and seed data. Our guest this week is Rob Bucci of STAT Search Analytics. We start out talking about Rob’s foray into learning to code and his first project which led to developing his first company STAT Search Analytics which creates the ability for their customers to track the visibility of search content and helps them determine what their data means.

STAT is a company that values personality, empathy, drive and learning agility and which puts people first. The company culture has emerged over time and each new hire adds to the team values base and they're hiring! The company is looking for a Software Development Manager and Web App Team Lead and other roles, which you can check out on their careers page.

STAT is planning more advanced projects in data science and promoting more travel and opportunities to go to conferences for their team in 2017. Dean is the CEO and Co-founder of Insight Diagnostics which is a medical technology company from Vancouver and speaks about the projects they're working on and the process of fundraising. Dean believes in developing technologies, companies and movements that truly matter. He's focused on building health technologies, clean energy and early stage technology development. Dean recommends a few resources if you're just getting started: read Lean Startup by Eric Reise, go out to meetups and events and speak to Universities about their recent or upcoming grads in the fields and technology you're looking to pursue.

Dean supports the Vancouver startup / technology scene from a founders perspective and is providing guidance and support through Farmteam and has provided early stage financing for startups through resources such as Wavefront, Creative Destruction Labs and many more.
