It’s a sales job, and a con job at that. Everything in our culture teaches us to want, primes us to want. Our biology gears up our wants, namely to procreate, but also to adventure into new territory in search of evolution, or sometimes just food. Our psyche tells us to want to stay socially safe, but also to differentiate, be unique, special... As a fiction writer, we must know what our characters want. We may uproot our lives to go “find ourselves.” Theoretically, our “self” is that part of us that tells us what we believe we are capable of—and not—thus creating a “self-fulfilling prophecy.” Also, the “self-made man” we hear of. But what is the self? I would argue - nothing but a composite of stories added to the predisposition of personality. As a concept, a reflection, even a perspective of consciousness, there is nothing materially real to our “self.” The hard science folks agree—our “self” cannot be found. If we are only a combination of brain synapses creating ideas and images that project themselves into our selves… sounds like a scam, doesn’t it... We hear a lot about self-esteem and self-image. Imagine you have a roommate and you have just moved in together. It’s her birthday and you decide to swing by the local grocery and get her a cake. The cost is $6.99 - and maybe 15 minutes of your time. You decide you’ll take the chocolate. When you give the cake to her, she says, “Uh, thanks, but I don’t like chocolate cake.” You think “rude” and choose to eat the cake yourself. Next birthday, though, no cake. You know her better and are closer, but you remember her last response. Kind of hard to forget... Not all stories are created equal. Rather, not all stories hold equal weight in our lives. The commitment is a feeling, not a contract, not a trade or a bargaining or a buying and selling. Empathy is knitted into the fabric of the story—who knows by what unseen force? It is simply there. Encouragement is always on offer. Loyalty, too. Trust goes unspoken. Support is mutual and leaned into. Vulnerability a given, and so highly respected. Listening is given and received. If that’s what you think, it’s not Grace that has arrived. At least not Grace with a capital G. By her very nature, Grace comes into our story as unexpected and unmerited. If you have earned a visitation, it is not by that one we call Grace. She comes from a freedom, or a vein of gold, and seems to live somewhere far off and away. She visits of her own accord, usually when least expected and most needed. This is not to say you cannot have small graces - small acts of mercy and blessing - without the heavens opening up and raining down. Of course you can. But that’s not what I am talking about. ]]> Chapter 9: The Formidable One Robin Rice 00:28:46 We tell ourselves the story of ourselves as if there is one unified narrative, one voice, reflecting one “me.” That even if we have aspects of ourselves that differ in opinion and interests, they come from one cohesive and linear storyline. That if we argue with ourselves—who, exactly, is arguing with whom?—it’s normal. If pressed, we might explain it as the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Most do not see this as indicative of some greater complexity worthy of inquiry but as a swarm of gnats to be swatted away or run from. We assume, at least early on in life, that time changes us only by adding to the story of our one identity, born at birth and gone at death. That even if we manage to change how we see ourselves within ourselves, it will be done by working with what already is, by making conscious choices at both the inevitable and surprising forks in the road. Ramakrishna seemed happy to oblige, but required clarification: “God with attributes or God without?” I was in my mid-thirties, barely past the profound awakening that would change absolutely everything in my life when I first read this short dialogue. It would have helped hugely to have read it twenty, even ten years before because the question immediately fell into place in my psyche and soul. All in one moment, a large chunk of my culturally imposed ideas of God fell away, like a massive iceberg calving. There is a story told about the old mystic Ramakrishna. I say this depends on which world you are speaking of. Atoms make the outer world—knock hard on something nearby to remind yourself if you have forgotten. Even if there is a breathtaking amount of empty space within each atom, as has been proven, they are remarkably solid in our everyday experience. Stories, on the other hand, make up our inner world. They are also the connective tissue between your world and mine. However much we might wish to make them solid, they are not. They are soft, malleable, ever-shapeshifting, and hopefully never told the same way twice. When allowed to ebb, flow, meander, and wish-wash their way through our days, stories are how we make sense of ourselves and our lives...
