EP 030: Structure Creates Freedom - The Power of a Weekly Meeting

The first 30 episodes are officially in the books!

As always, we have kept this episode short, sweet, and to the point, because complexity is the enemy of execution. Today, we discuss the power of putting one simple structure in place to create a world of freedom for both you and your relationship. While on the surface it may sound counter-intuitive, structure really does create freedom.

Let me know if you found this episode valuable by leaving a rating and subscribing!

And as always, if you're looking to take this work on more intentionally, book a call or DM me!

EP 025: Change Your Focus

The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. But the quality of our lives tends to come down to what we focus on the most. Do you find yourself focusing frequently on whats going wrong, or the hardships of your life, or the resistance, challenge, scarcity, difficulty, pain, sorrow? Or do you find yourself orienting towards what is going well, the possibility of the next moment, the excitement of a challenge, the reality of failure as learning? When your partner does something that bothers you, where does your focus go? When your your does something you really enjoy, where does your focus go? When you think about your partner during the day, what specifically do you focus on? So much of our life comes down to our moment-to-moment focus. So if we expect our relationships to improve, well then we have to shift what we focus on in order to create more of what we want. Where our focus goes, energy flows.

Enjoy this weeks episode and make sure to give this podcast a rating!

EP 024: Who Is Carrying the Mental Load?

Gabby and I recently moved, and with that move came a lot of moving parts and a lot of things to tend to and care for. Thru this, a question came up: who is going to do this? Who is going to do that? Who will plan this? Who is even thinking about all of this? This is where todays conversation sparked from: the mental load. This is something we experience as individuals and amplifies when we get into a relationship. And it we don't face it together, it can cause major disturbances. So lets talk about it.

EP 023: Not Knowing This Creates Unnecessary Conflict

Gabby and I just recently moved into a new home, and something that came up during the move was our desire to get the home 100% complete - design, colours, organization, etc. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to make that happen, which was disappointing to face. And at the same time, it got me thinking - what would have happened if we didn't create that clarity together? How would the next month or so have gone? What would have been the expectation? How would we have handled the reality when it smacked us in the face versus getting ahead of it?

This brings us to todays episode - the value and importance of identifying what season of our life and relationship we are in. This small dose of clarity can do wonders for mitigating conflict, creating clear expectations, and opening up more freedom to think and feel.

If you liked this episode, make sure to give it a rating and subscribe to be notified on the next release!

To understand what might be alive for us in our relationship right now, it can be extremely helpful to identify where we are at in the emotional cycle of change (also could be called "the steps to success"). Everything starts at the stage of uninformed optimism, but what happens from there is where the real value and depth of growth begin.

EP 021: Honesty vs. Vulnerability - Wait, They're Different?

I attended a mens group a couple of weeks ago and as everyone was sharing, I realized something about myself; I am really great at being honest, but I am really not great at being vulnerable. As I sat with this for a couple of weeks, I discovered that I am not alone in this. I also discovered that when it comes to our relationships, whether it be friends, family, or lover, understanding the difference can actually open up the gateway for deeper connection and intimacy. That led me to curate this episode to support us with a deeper understanding of the light and the shadow sides of honesty and vulnerability, and some high-level questions to dig deeper into our honest selves and our vulnerable selves.

EP 017: The Power of Non-Verbal Communication in Relationships

Do you cross your arms when talking to people? Do your cheeks reach your eyes when you smile? Do you squint at your partner when something doesn't make sense? All of these are just some of the many examples of the way our body speaks. And in relationship, this can be the make or break between our partner feeling accepted, or rejected. In todays episode, we break down the power of non-verbal expressions in an effort to improve our communication skills so we can find more alignment and connection in our intimate relationships.

I came across these two posts the other day - one was a polarizing share about how "Relationships are easy, you just need to be with the right person," and a comment on a separate post that said, "so what - do we need to just talk like a therapist now?" After sitting with these, I came to a couple conclusions that I believe are important thoughts to consider.

EP 015: How to Start Dealing With Money Better in Your Relationship

Today we talk about money, one of the biggest challenges relationships face. But money isn't inherently the problem - the problem is how do hold space for two differing opinions, beliefs, and experiences while simultaneously creating financial safety and trust in the relationship? Today we begin that journey, starting with a deeper exploration of our own experiences with money, how that has developed over time, and what work we can do today to get closer to being on the same page.

EP 09: Fixing This Will Dramatically Improve Your Relationship

In todays episode, we begin the conversation surrounding safety and trust in our relationships. Without a strong foundation of safety, build thru consistency in action based on who we say we are, our relationships will quickly (or slowly) deteriorate over time. So what can we do? How can we create this kind of environment? How do we even know if my partner feels safe? That they trust me? Where are our blindspots? How do we fill them?

Listen in for a direct approach to mitigating micro ruptures of safety/trust.

EP 07: Top 5 Lessons from 5 Years Together!

Gabby and I just celebrated our 5 year anniversary this past weekend! We had coffee in the morning together, then we went out hiking in the mountains, and then followed that up with a delicious dinner at an Italian-style restaurant. It was an amazing weekend overall, even on the slower Sunday we took together, and it all felt different than our past ones. It felt more... free from unspoken expectation, aligned on life, excited about what is still yet to come, and at ease about who we are and what we've accomplished. All of this got me thinking - if there were 5 major keys to being together for 5 years, what would they be?

EP 06: Your Relationship Will Fail Without This

A lot of what I experience with my clients, and what I also experienced in my earlier relationships, is a desire to eradicate conflict altogether. Even during the research for this episode, I came across a clip where the audience and the host's were surprised to hear that conflict isn't just important, but its actually necessary. Conflict has been given a bad rep, especially in intimate relationships, but without it, our relationships won't evolve, they won't grow, and they won't be able to sustain anything long-lasting. The solution? Learning how to fight better.

Some of the other relational experts mentioned:

Terry Real

Esther Perel

EP 05: 10 Tips for a Healthier, Happier Relationship

I really enjoyed this episode because it reminded me of some of the many things that Gabby and I have taken on in an effort to grow, heal, and evolve together. My suggestion: take 1, 2, or 3 of these, and try them on for a couple weeks. Shift and mold them into what works best for your unique relationship. Be wary of trying all 10 at once - there is no rush here. Do your best to hold this closing perspective - we may lose some battles, but we will win the war, together.

After some great discussions with Gabby (my partner) and another one with my client, I think it's time we have a discussion about Freedom. My opinion? Freedom is not choice - freedom is not some far off destination - freedom is not built into a million dollar salary - and freedom is also not built into "the single life". Freedom is something different, something more accessible.

Freedom is not choice.

Freedom is choice's chosen.

Let me explain.

Podcasts are incredible, and what helps them immensely is when people subscribe and rate them. This tells the algorithm to send it out to more people which in turn allows more people to access this kind of support. If you like this episode, please be sure to give it a rating and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes!

Now, lets begin.

In todays podcast, I talk about the phrase, "Intention matters, but impact maters more." I give a couple different analogies to help the mind digest this concept deeper. I share stories about where I have fallen short on this and the impact that has had. I finish with sharing some seriously powerful perspectives that almost eradicate this concept altogether because they are more potent. And I provide language to support with shifting arguments from disharmony to repair.

EP 02: Want to Argue Less?

This episode is inspired by the incredible work of the Gottman's, leading experts in the relationship field. They coined the phrase, "Bids for Connection," a micro way or rather a micro opportunity to enhance and create more love and connection in our relationships. In this episode I talk all about the concept, how to start noticing these moments/opportunities, what happens when we don't take them on, and how to navigate when we do notice but are preoccupied with something else.

Love is often associated with a feeling, but I am sure we can all also agree that when our partner leans forward towards moments of connection, love also becomes an action.

Together, today, lets start prioritizing creating and responding to the micro moments so our love tanks are way more full!

Like this episode?

Now, lets begin.

Welcome to the very first page of your Relationship Atlas! In this episode I begin by sharing why I made this podcast, who its for, what I hope to achieve by shifting to this audio platform, and what you can expect from me. From there, I transition into discussing the impact social platforms/social trends are having on our ability to relate both to ourselves and our partners. As we move towards the end, the discussion shifts into a small nervous system awareness practice + my perspective so far as to how to work WITH the trends rather than letting them be the sole source of learning.
