Belonging Beyond Skin Deep: Sim Sanni on Race, Identity, and Resilience

In this episode "Race to the Top" I had an enlightening conversation with Sim Sanni, an independent advisor at the John Lewis Partnership and one of their first black female store managers. Sim shared her unique upbringing, growing up between London and Nigeria, and how it shaped her identity and sense of belonging. We discussed the challenges of being a minority in various contexts, even when she physically resembled the majority. Sim reflected on the weight of being a role model and the importance of relationships in her career. She also contrasted her early experiences in retail with her mother's advice to keep her head down, emphasising the need to speak up and advocate for oneself. This episode is filled with valuable insights on resilience, identity, and the complexities of navigating race and gender in the workplace. I hope you find Sim's story as inspiring as I did.
Delroy Corinaldi: From Players to Coaches: Exploring the Challenges of Black Footballers in Management Roles

In this episode of ;Race to the Top, I sit down with Delroy Corinaldi, executive director and co-founder of the Black Footballers Partnership. We dive into the critical issue of the lack of representation of black players in management roles within football, a topic that Delroy passionately addresses. He shares how a casual conversation about Darren Moore's sacking at West Brom ignited his commitment to tackling institutional racism in the sport.

Delroy emphasises the importance of data, revealing that while 43% of Premier League players are black, only 4% of management roles
are held by black individuals. We explore the systemic barriers that prevent black players from transitioning into coaching and management positions, and discuss the need for regulatory changes to promote diversity. This enlightening conversation sheds light on the intertwined challenges of representation in both football and corporate leadership, offering hope for a more equitable future in the sport.
Fear, Creativity, and a Dash of Chaos: Frank Starling Recipe for Success

In this episode of "Race to the Top," I had the pleasure of speaking with Frank Starling, a dynamic leader in the realm of creativity and diversity. We kicked off our conversation by exploring the Cannes Lions Festival, where Frank plays a key role in celebrating marketing and brand communications while emphasising the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in fostering innovation.

Frank shared his personal journey growing up in Hackney, East London, and the challenges he faced navigating different socioeconomic environments. He discussed pivotal moments that shaped his identity and aspirations, particularly his experiences in education and early career.

A significant turning point for Frank was his volunteer work with Hackney Council, aimed at addressing unemployment among young Black men. This ignited his passion for DE&I, leading him to create opportunities for underrepresented communities. Our discussion also touched on the impact of microaggressions and the importance of setting boundaries in the workplace, offering valuable insights for fostering inclusivity. <itunes:subtitle>In this episode of "Race to the Top," I had the pleasure of speaking with Frank Starling, a dynamic leader in the realm of creativity and diversity.

Our discussion also touched on the impact of microaggressions and the importance of setting boundaries in the workplace, offering valuable insights for fostering inclusivity.</itunes:subtitle>

Janine Irons: The making of a modern musical impresario | Season 2 Episode 3

In this episode of Race to the Top, I got to have a bit of a fanboy moment chatting to Janine Irons, who is the CEO and Co-founder Of Tomorrow's Warriors (TW). TW is the most incredible talent development agency with a focus on black and female talent and those facing socio economic barriers. Young artists developed by the organisation have gone on to be nominated for numerous awards and in 2023, The Ezra Collective, who emerged from TW, actually won the Mercury music Award. In this conversation we talk about growing up in London, the struggles Janine had getting promoted in the City, facing overt and systemic racism and the challenges of building a black led organisation. It's an inspirational conversation for anyone wanting to build a business and an object lesson in ambition and resilience. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

Lights, Camera, Segregation: Charles Burnett on Making Movies and Dodging Trouble

In this episode of "Race to the Top" I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the legendary filmmaker Charles Burnett. Picture this: a young Charles navigating the vibrant yet segregated streets of 50s and 60s Los Angeles, where jazz clubs thrived and kids rode bikes like they were training for the Tour de France—minus the spandex, of course! Charles shared stories that were both heart- wrenching and hilarious, like the time a teacher told him he wouldn’t amount to anything—classic motivational tactics, right? But instead of letting that dim his shine, he turned it into fuel for his filmmaking fire. We dove into the civil rights movement, the magic of community, and how he
went from being a kid raising pigeons to a cinematic powerhouse. He also shed light on the absurdities of Hollywood, where being a Black filmmaker sometimes felt like trying to get into an exclusive club with a bouncer who didn’t even know what a film camera looked like. Yet, through it all, Charles remained hopeful and determined, proving that laughter and resilience can coexist. So, grab your popcorn and get ready to be inspired—this episode is a
masterclass in storytelling and tenacity! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

Why Sir TrevorPhillips doesn’t care if you like him: A Masterclass in Racial Realities

In this episode of "Race to the Top" I had the privilege of speaking with Sir Trevor Phillips, a prominent figure in the fight for racial equity. Trevor shared his remarkable journey, highlighting his extensive career as a writer, TV producer, and advocate for equality. We delved into the significance of role models, where Trevor emphasised the importance of having multiple role models that reflect achievable pathways rather than unattainable ideals. Trevor's unique upbringing, having spent significant time in both the UK and Guyana, shaped his understanding of race and identity allowed him to navigate different cultural contexts. We explored the complexities of racism, with Trevor offering a nuanced definition that goes beyond mere acts of discrimination to encompass the irrational elevation of racial differences in human interactions. He argued that while microaggressions exist, they should be addressed through education and open dialogue rather than punitive measures. We wrapped up on a hopeful note, with Trevor highlighting the unique mixed-race population in the UK as a sign of progress. This episode is packed with insights, laughter, and a mountain of wisdom—definitely one for the books! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com
