Dr Matthew Adams is a Principal Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Brighton, UK.
Everything is an object of design with Maureen Thurston

Maureen’s 40-year career as an industrial designer has spanned the globe, multiple industries and creative disciplines. Her diverse background as an entrepreneur, educator and consultant has manifested itself into her current role as the world’s first Chief Experience Officer (CXO) for an engineering firm Aurecon – quite possibly the first CXO in any of the big-4 professional service firms today.

She led the company’s Design to Innovate program – part of Aurecon’s Future Ready, by design strategy - by embedding the mindset and methods of design as a catalyst to foster innovation, reframe culture transformation and reinforce Aurecon’s brand promise to ‘Bring ideas to life’.

She is also Chair of Good Design Australia, indeed a multi talented guest!

Maureen believes we are all creative, and that is part of our super power as human beings and that we need to ask more questions and seek more answers, rather than simply looking for solutions . She believes all innovation is simply an output - an outcome - of asking the question - Why? The why question is to trigger learning.

She loves to use her design thinking skills to work on problem solving with groups and have fun in reframing problems into opportunities. She loves nature, being outside and seeing the expansiveness of the horizon - as a way to pause more and think about what it is that might be possible?

In a Design Context - Maureen describes TetraMap as a framework for catalysing innovation.

Fire- is the catalyst to spark innovation.

Water - is the flow of co-creation.

Air - is the space to achieve clarity

Earth - is how the discipline of design helps make the world a better place.

She is passionate about Inclusivity and Diversity as a strategy for Innovation, and likens it to an insurance policy - one that will help teams and organisations reach better outcomes and achieve competitive advantage.

Maureen explains how anyone can think like a designer, or work like a designer. She say anyone can learn the methods but it is more about the mindset of being human centric - where she refers to the culture of design - as being one of trying to democratise creativity.

Maureen’s professional journey continues to be guided by her absolute belief in the strategic business value of design as a means to unlock innovation, creativity and sustainable growth.

There are many, many gems in this 30 minute interview.

Book Recommendations:
A more beautiful question by Warren Berger
Dancing with Disruption by Mike Lipkin

Quote chosen from Oscar Wilde:
LIfe is too important to be taken seriously.

Maureen's Linked In Details: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maureenthurston/

Short Explanatory Videos:
The why of things : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmj9lG9hcFg

Aurecon’s DNA: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mixo1k6gdaskn1u/AURECON_DNA_2020.mp4?dl=0

Podcast:
Royalty-free music with permission from artist: Woah by Vincent Augustus
Producers: Alasdair and Uros: Far Out Podcast

Personality isn't Permanent with Ben Hardy PhD

Dr. Benjamin Hardy has a PhD in Organizational Psychology, he’s the bestselling author of Willpower Doesn’t Work. From 2015-2018, he was the #1 writer in the world on Medium.com his blogs have been read by over 100 million people!

He has a new, controversial and mind-blowing book that has just been released Personality Isn’t Permanent.

In the book, Ben debunks the most pervasive myths about personality, explains why his research show personality tests like Myers-Briggs and Enneagram are non-scientific, can be harmful, and lead people to mediocrity. He reveals how past traumas negatively shape personality, and how-to re-frame those traumas, change your memories and break free from self-limiting beliefs.

I've been following his work for several years and was lucky enough to score a podcast interview with him. In preparation he sent me an advance copy of his book, fast becoming a best seller. The reviews indicate this is something we'd all benefit from reading.

His in depth knowledge on this topic is particularly relevant for TetraMap facilitators and their clients. In the interview Ben helps explain why people are so concerned about 'personality tests'. This pertains in particular why we always request you don't describe TetraMap in this way.

There's a lot of insights from Ben in this interview, all backed up by science and we're sure you'll find it thought provoking, and him charming. I certainly did!

Podcast: Royalty-free music: With permission from artist: Woah by Vincent Augustus
Producers: Alasdair and Uros: Far Out Podcast

A positive practical perspective on conflict resolution with Dr. Jane Beddall

Jane Beddall is from Connecticut USA. She is a lawyer with a focus on mediation and conflict resolution with a particular interest in family businesses.

Jane is In Her Element when she is able to listen and convey an approach of the confidence to the people she works with. She talks about the skills of handling the emotional and sometimes irrational aspects which will often come to the fore when conflict is present.

Jane's chose a favourite phrase of hers which forms a key part of her work "The only constant is change" and how recognising a change will often provide a shift to see opportunities which arise during a conflict situation.

She shares a workplace situation where a simmering tension arose and led to a need for workplace mediation. The "I am right and you are wrong" fixed mindset caused an escalation from something small into a much bigger problem.
In Your Element - with Ruhia King, Master TetraMap Facilitator, New Zealand

Ruhia is a Master TetraMap Facilitator, and like all great teachers is also a student of learning. She is currently studying full time at Waikato University. And taking a total immersion course in Te Reo – called Te Tohu Paetahi and for those that don’t know Te Reo is the language for Maori – the indigenous peoples of New Zealand .

Working with and learning from the wisdom of Maori is and always has been very important to us at TetraMap and Ruhia has played a generous and significant part in that. In this episodes she describes the practices and principles that govern Maori values and beliefs and how nature plays such an important role in her culture. .

We met back in 2011 – just after the massive Christchurch earthquake, and I remember the day very well. Since then, we have enjoyed a long- lasting relationship with Ruhia and the team she worked with her through her previous role in Practice Excellence, at Te Wananga O Aotearoa.

Whilst at Te Wananga, Ruhia wrote a case study which you can see on TetraMap's website. It explores how they used TetraMap to develop a unique indigenous communication model that supports cultural diversity, fosters stronger leadership and deepens the educational experience for both tutors and students.

Ruhia's quote was one handed down by her own mother, relating to Earth, Air, Water and Fire. "When one of these Elements is missing, the body, soul and mind become unwell."

The Nature Series

We hear from Andrew Melville, a long time friend of TetraMap and also the editor of our book ‘ Develop People and Business the way Nature intended’.

Andrew narrates part 4 of the book for our listeners, and in this reading he describes The Nature Series and the TetraPath of learning . He touches on the notion of regenerative development for individuals, teams and organisations.

The Nature Series moves from Behaviour, to Team, to Planning and then to Customers.

The first step into TetraMap's journey is most important, thus starting with self-awareness a powerful entry point. From there, study each TetraMap and decide for yourself what sequence of understanding will be more effective for you and your people.

Andrew has recently published his book - The Weave: The Surprising Unity in Difference.

The Weave offers a bold new model and metaphor for navigating today’s complex world. It builds on the ancient and universal craft of weaving, to offer pathways in communication, engagement and facilitation.

” The Weave gives an insightful new meaning to the flow for strategy…it makes a brilliant and clear map for 21st C thinking, I will revisit the book many times.”

In Your Element - with Amy C. Edmondson, Harvard Business School, USA

Amy Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School is our latest guest on the podcast. In her early career she worked alongside her hero (and ours) Buckminster Fuller as 'Chief Engineeer'. What an amazing connection.

Charming and gracious, Amy is a research professor who is 'In Her Element' when teaching a group of students, and asking them deep questions to help them make sense and meaning of the topic at hand.

Amy is the author of: The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth, and which is currently taking the business world by storm.

Although she had been researching and speaking on the topic for decades, it was Project Aristotle from Google, which prompted her to write her latest highly engaging and relevant book - and as she puts it 'tie it in a bow'. She tells the story of some of her more suprising discoveries - into worlds of mistakes and fear, and positive success in high performing organisations and teams. Well researched and a must read for all leaders, HR professionals, and organisations that want to know how achieve success.

The quote she chose to share with our listeners,

I seem to be a verb - Richard Buckminster Fuller

Alex Villarreal, Facilitator, Coach, Consultant delivers experiential learning experiences for a range of clients in Mexico and the US. He is the founder of Odisea Consultores, who focus on leadership and team development.

He is a Master Facilitator and holds a license for TetraMap in México since 2008.

Alex serves on the Board of Directors of the Experiential Training and Development Alliance. He is an associate at The Browne Center for Innovative Learning at the University of New Hampshie.

A mountain and rock climber who has successfully summited Mount Everest, crossed Greenland on skis, and climbed the highest and most remote mountains around the world, Alex also enjoys being an ultra-marathon trail runner.

It is not surprising then, that the quote Alex chose to share with listeners to 'In Your Element' podcast comes from Sir Ernest Shackleton - the trans-Atlantic explorer, whose ship - The Endurance, was crushed by ice. **If you don't know Shackleton's story yet .....it truly is a must read. **

Quote:

“Men Wanted: For hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”
― Ernest Shackleton

Alex also shares a story about his friend Carlos, who came to the TetraMap Certification course with his father. Alex tells us how this powerful learning experience built a common understanding between father and son - which has helped them deeply value and appreciate each other's differences.

He is a mountain and rock climber who has successfully summited Mount Everest, crossed Greenland on skis, and climbed the highest and most remote mountains around the world. He also enjoys being an ultra-marathon trail runner.

It is not surprising then, that the quote Alex chose to share with ' In Your Element' podcast listeners comes from Sir Ernest Shackleton - the trans-Atlantic explorer, whose ship - The Endurance, was crushed by ice.
In Your Element - with Olive Strachan, MBE

Global business woman, Entrepreneur and Founder of Olive Strachan Resources, Olive has recently been honoured with an MBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Having worked as a Management Development Specialist and an International Learning Development Consultant for over 20 years, Olive was delighted to be recognised to receive the award for her Services to Exports in Professional Business.

Aside from her profession, Olive has contributed and undertaken many voluntary roles including becoming a mentor for the NatWest Entrepreneurial Spark Programme, mentoring young entrepreneurs in start-up businesses.

A whole heap of fun, Olive discusses arriving at Buckingham Palace to receive the award, and her trip up the red carpet to meet Prince Charles.

She provides her top tips for becoming successful, and how to get yourself noticed, comparing herself to Madonna and how to remain relevant.
Female entrepreneurship and helping boards to become more culturally diverse are her current focus.

Olive chose to share a powerful quote from Michelle Obama's book Becoming.

“For every door that’s been opened to me, I’ve tried to open my door to others. And here is what I have to say, finally: Let’s invite one another in. Maybe then we can begin to fear less, to make fewer wrong assumptions, to let go of the biases and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the ways we are the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice. And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.” Michelle Obama

Her love for TetraMap comes shining through, Olive tells us how it changed her life and how she's used it for 10 years with clients all over the world.

We hear from Andrew Melville, a long time friend of TetraMap and also the editor of our book ‘ Develop People and Business the way Nature intended’.

Andrew narrates part 3 of the book for our listeners, and in this reading he describes how the Elements go 3D and are mapped onto the exquisitely elegant shape of the tetrahedron.

He sums up the episode with this from Neal Donald Walshe

The greatest complexity is the greatest simplicity. The more 'complex' a system is, the more simple its design. Indeed it is utterly elegant in its simplcity. . .

In Your Element - with Leyla Okhai Founding Director of Diverse Minds UK

Leyla discusses her work in Diversity, Inclusion, Culture and Wellbeing, as well as her intriguing interest in deserts and a love of camels. She has an impressive background from her tenure at Imperial College, London where she was the Head of Centre for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. She also worked at the University of Oxford for six years, specialising in increasing applications from underrepresented BAME young people.

Diverse Minds aims to create a positively productive workplace for all through training, coaching and consultancy. The focus is placed on wellbeing, mental health and by understanding differences.

Leyla explains how TetraMap has become an important tool in her toolkit, and how its simplicitiy helps people to open up, relax, laugh, and be creative whilst learning about themselves and others. She appreciates how it provides a safe way to celebrate and understand uniqueness, diversity, difference and culture.

She also explains how she uses TetraMap along side another tool in her leadership workshops - the TMI team management profile. Leyla says the combination of the two tools - one psychometric and one not, creates rich, deep and valuable learning for her workshop participants.

Her book reference - Rejection Proof, comes from Jia Jaing along with You Tube videos and a TED talk - gives all us much more to explore.
