There may be little change each time an economic event comes around—but after 15 times you learn to recognize what it is. Once we grasp how simple the system is, it becomes easy to make an accurate educated guess what will come next. What is happening now has happened before—and will happen again.

I recorded this episode with Hyperlane's founder for Sovereign Radio and subsequently reposting it to my own channels.

Hyperlane is an interoperability protocol and an alternative to IBC. This conversation just barely scratches the surface about Hyperlane and is in fact not about Hyperlane at all. More important than the technicals, we articulate what phenomenon is stunting web3's development. Hint: it's a cultural one.

Despite having existed just shy of 15 years, the crypto space has undergone radical transformation. The tinkerers within it appear to be building under some subversive make-token-price-go-up pressure at the center of a speculative panopticon. The feedback loop awards "good" behavior (uponly), while punishing bad (token price down). In spite of such subversive incentives that seem to have worked only as well as to attract the most prolific of grifters, the space continues to innovate. Over a long enough timeframe, it will ultimately converge into a single, unified blockchain-based web—an interchain—whose underlying infrastructure comprises of all the available L1s.

Squid router can be thought of as a bridge and DEX aggregator in one. It uses Axelar under the hood. Axelar is one of the most popular bridging options when you want to bridge between the EVM and IBC ecosystems. If you haven't watched it already, I did two interviews with Sergey, the co-founder of Axelar, so be sure to check those out. Squid does the manual labor of performing each and every hair-tearing step for you when you're migrating an Ethereum native stablecoin, like DAI for example, into the Cosmos ecosystem to trade on a DEX like Osmosis. For you to do this before Squid router, you had to bridge DAI over through Axelar, get it "wrapped" into Cosmos DAI, have it deposited into Osmosis, then perform the swap. Squid abstracts all those steps away. All you need to do is to make one transaction. Because Squid is cross-chain, that makes it the first successful cross-chain DEX aggregator there is.

This is one of the most under-the-radar groundbreaking achievement in DeFi—and with low latency like 20 seconds to finality to boot! A must watch! If you don't watch any other part of the episode, I highly recommend skipping to the Demo segment.

Zo is a chat app, like Signal, built with web3 in mind. Despite being in the modern era of social and chat, the underlying infrastructure is frustratingly antiquated. Using SMS to log in to any platform is extremely insecure and it's akin to driving a horse-drawn cart across an interstate highway—antiquated. But with the advent of web3 identity, now you can drive a Tesla across that highway. It's more secure, privacy-preserving, and it gives you your sovereignty back. As in, you don't need to rely on a third party like AT&T to give you your SMS based identity. Zo, as it happens, uses Celestia for its identity layer, and that's the only part about the chat app that utilizes a blockchain.

There seems to be a Cambrian explosion of alternative VMs (e.g. Move VM, Gno VM, Solana VM, Fuel VM). But the execution layer is not the only layer that's being reimagined. Up until the advent of Celestia, the crypto research space has only ever thought of consensus/security, data availability, and execution as one single monolithic stack—a Layer 1 (L1). In 2023, that all changes. Now there's about to be a Cambrian explosion of Data Availability (DA) layers (e.g. Celestia, Polygon Avail) designed for modular architectures. Eclipse is a flagship project utilizing Celestia DA that implements discrete execution layers (e.g. rollups) that plugs and plays various VMs. Will this model allow the crypto economy to finally scale to onboard its next 100 million users? Will it de-emphasize the underlying base layer, abstracting them away for the end user like how early adopters have always envisioned?

Canto DEX - liquidity rails but make it public

Canto is a decentralized exchange built with Cosmos SDK that runs the EVM on its execution layer. The primary difference between Canto and most other DEXs is that it doesn't charge the user LP fees to make swaps, which means that LPs don't earn additional swap fees. This is in line with Canto's vision of providing an exchange as a public service rather than as a private enterprise.

From Messari:

- Canto is a general-purpose Proof-of-Stake blockchain that embeds a decentralized exchange, lending market, and overcollateralized currency into the network.

- These three core DeFi primitives are offered to users as Free Public Infrastructure — public utilities that are free to use in perpetuity.

- Canto’s design choices represent a radically different approach to building blockchain applications that could catalyze an organic wave of developer adoption.

However, a concentrated token distribution and reliance on liquidity mining could hinder the network’s long-term growth. Two important trends are occurring across crypto right now:

Blue-chip DeFi application business models are converging. Rather than offering a single service in isolation, protocols are beginning to package exchange, lending, and stablecoin services together in one unified stack.

Applications are choosing to leave generalized smart contract networks to create their own application-specific blockchains. While this approach forces applications to bootstrap their own network security, it allows for greater customizability and control over network incentives. Canto is an experimental smart contract network that combines both of these ideas together. Built on the Cosmos SDK, Canto is a general-purpose Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain that embeds a decentralized exchange (DEX), lending market, and overcollateralized currency into the network. Canto views these three core DeFi primitives as public goods that should be offered to users for free. Altogether, Canto provides a unique approach to both application and network design that is aligned with the permissionless ethos of public blockchains.

✨About WosmosNFTs✨ Many of you long-time listeners of this show are well familiar with the iconic Wosmongton figurehead—the mad scientist of the Osmosis Lab. Well, to no one's surprise, this in-demand icon will be turned into a native NFT PFP (profile pic) project to Osmosis. There's a caveat though. Unlike your garden variety NFT PFP jpeg collection, the WosmosNFT collection will be—you guessed it—gamified. The twist is that you will be able to mine test tubes, mix them together, and level up your base Wosmongton. There will be built-in game mechanics that make this NFT highly addictive. You've been warned. As you may guess, some items are rarer than others. There will be elements of randomness to it, but one thing's for sure—the more you play and level up, the more legendary your Wosmo's inventory of attributes will grow.

Our guest today is Motivating Jean. He contributes to this project. At this stage of the interview, WosmosNFTs are obviously in the alpha stages of development so it shouldn't be taken as a production-ready project. Cosmos Q&A - How Kevin Smith can Disrupt Hollywood's Model

Kevin Smith recently announced his launch of his "Killroy Was Here" NFT collection, slated to mint on Secret Network. The big idea? The pain point that many Hollywood directors have had with Hollywood has long been about Hollywood taking the lion's share of the profits on any successful film they produce. Meanwhile, their fanbase get a cut of none of the profits while they get a small percentage of the royalties. But what if directors and indie filmmakers alike can one day utilize the power of NFTs to do an ICO of sorts, thereby creating a public sale of their upcoming film, and take a share of the profits of that film while cutting out the middle man, Hollywood? In this way, the people directly involved with making the movie get a larger share of the profits while their most ardent fanbase can also take part in the profit-sharing.

Legendao - Hollywood will be radically disrupted in the next 5 years because of this technology

A new platform built on Secret Network specialized in minting NFTs. An early pioneer of this technology, Quentin Tarantino, followed by Kevin Smith, are proving that Legendao could be the choice platform for minting and trading NFTs that will be used to democratize the movie making process. While Hollywood traditionally takes the lion's share of the cut of profits and maintains a very tight-knit and closed industry, the thesis of Secret Labs posits that NFTs, like ICOs, could be used to break open this industry to allow the public to seed new indie movies and participate in the future profits of such new movies. This model and novel way of utilizing NFTs, if successful, sets to disrupt Hollywood and the indie filmmaking industry as we know it.
