025: 1680 and the Pueblo Revolt

In this episode we cover history from the year 1680! Karina chose to cross the Atlantic this week with the story of La Voisin from France. Randi covers the Pueblo Revolt focusing on the colonization efforts of the Spanish and the Pueblo People who fought against them. Randi brings the story full circle and discusses how this story is resonating to this day. We sip, we laugh, and we contemplate the wild histories of the world around us.

<itunes:subtitle>We are back on our American History train! This year we start out discussing The Royal African Company as well as the foundations of the Carolinas and Georgia. Randi and Christina stick with the classics, Karina sips on a Carolina Bulldog, and Greg drinks an Equillibrum Mc2 Double IPA and bourbon for the trauma.

This week the gals cover the last part of Elizabeth Packard's story.
When we last left Elizabeth she had finally been freed from the asylum. She had to suffer through Theophilus’s cruelty to finally have her day in court to prove her sanity. Although she's been hoping for this day for years, she is unable to celebrate her victory becasue Theophilus runs away with her children. Elizabeth does triumph in the end, but listen to find out how.

Although this story may not seem relevent, a story of someone suffering through unjust imprisonment is very relatable today. The days seem dark, but Elizabeth's story reminds us that fear is strong but hope is stronger.

Instead of being passive or just there to serve men, history shows that women were actually key to human survival—gathering food, making tools, raising kids, and shaping society. Women were crucial to our evolution. It’s a fresh take that gives women the credit they’ve always deserved in the story of humanity.</itunes:summary>

This week, The Sip and Saga Society dives into the notorious 1892 murder case of the Borden Family in Fall River, Massachusetts. Set against the backdrop of a bustling industrial town, we’ll unpack the family dynamics and the tensions that spiraled into tragedy. We’ll shine a light on Lizzie’s complicated relationships, especially with her stepmom, along with the strange circumstances around the murders. Even with conflicting stories and no solid proof, Lizzie was found not guilty, capturing the media’s attention and public curiosity.
Episode 11: Elizabeth, what are you doing loca?

Elizabeth Bathory's story is one you may not be able to forget! Born into Hungarian nobility in the late 16th century, she married young at 14 and took over managing her husband's estate while he was off at war. She became infamous for her brutal treatment of servants and was rumored to have tortured and killed hundreds of young girls, believing that bathing in their blood would keep her young. Even with all the evidence piling up against her, she was never really put on trial; instead, she ended up under house arrest in a remote castle, where she died in 1614. Her legend lives on, mixing horror and vampirism, and continues to captivate writers and filmmakers today!

Sources:

Countess Elizabeth Bathory by Charles River Editors

Charles River Editors is a company that works on creating original writing pieces of digital content. The sources for the book range from various sources including biographies and diaries. Novels have been written about Elizabeth and often they combine fact with fiction.

Episode 7: Toilets and Toilet Paper History

In a continuation of our Toilet Paper Series we cover how the Greeks and Romans used various methods for personal hygiene, with Greeks favoring rough stones or leeks and Romans using communal sponges on sticks. In medieval Europe, cloth was commonly used and reused for wiping, with wealthier individuals employing specialized attendants for the task. The invention of paper in China eventually influenced Western hygiene practices, though paper was initially criticized for its ineffectiveness. In the late 19th century, Seth Wheeler's innovations led to the commercialization of perforated toilet paper rolls, revolutionizing the industry. The Scott Paper Company, later a major player in the market, popularized high-quality toilet paper and disposable paper towels, evolving significantly over time. We continued to use the book, "Wiped" by Ronald Blumer as a source throughout this episode.

The Olympics, a 16-day sporting event with opening and closing ceremonies, involve massive costs, such as the $49.96 billion spent on Sochi 2014. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), a non-governmental organization, oversees the Games, which feature athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.

This week the girls discuss the history of toilet paper using the book Wiped by Ronald H. Blumer as a source. Imagine visiting a 2,000-year-old Roman communal toilet and wondering how people managed to clean up after themselves. This curiosity uncovers a fascinating history of human hygiene practices. Ancient Greeks used stones and sponges, while medieval Europeans often reused cloth. It wasn't until the 19th century that toilet paper became widely available. Through the ages, the subject of defecation has been surrounded by stigma, influencing how different cultures approached cleanliness and sanitation.

Episode 1: A Conservatory is not an Observatory

Nestled within the Ozark Mountains, Eureka Springs blossomed in 1879 as a haven of healing springs, attracting comfort-seekers from far and wide. Guided by Governor Powell Clayton's vision, Eureka Springs flourished. The Crescent Hotel opened in 1886 as a lavish retreat perched atop Crescent Mountain. Over time, the hotel transitioned into the Crescent College for Women, only to later fall into the hands of Norman Baker, a fraudulent figure who exploited its reputation for his notorious cancer clinic, enduring periods of decline and destruction. Despite setbacks, Marty and Elise Roenigk's restoration efforts in the late 1990s preserved the Crescent's historic allure while updating it with modern amenities, solidifying its position as a symbol of hospitality and fascination in Eureka Springs.
