Sullivan lays out three reasons why the decision was flawed, argues that Donald Trump’s “appetite grew with the eating” from the 12-day war to the current escalation, and offers an alternative path—a renewed nuclear deal backed by long-term deterrence. Annie and Theo Kaplan have a family ritual: every Friday night, they celebrate Shabbat with their lively immigrant grandparents. But this Shabbat — which also happens to be Annie’s eleventh birthday — isn’t like the others. She currently teaches economics at Reichman University and serves on several corporate boards, including Cellebrite. Known for her expertise in monetary policy and financial regulation, she is also married to economist and former Knesset member Manuel Trajtenberg.

As literal winds of fire sweep across Israel, the country marks its 77th Independence Day. But even in a week that should have offered unity and reflection, the political winds howled as well: a public clash between the head of the Shin Bet and the prime minister came to a head, and internal divisions between left and right spilled over—alarmingly—into acts of violence, even amid the solemnity of Memorial Day.

Looking for a note of hope as Israel enters its 78th year, we turned to Eyal Waldman—tech visionary, founder of the Mellanox company which sold to Nvidia for $6.9 billion, and, more recently, a father in mourning. His daughter, Danielle, was murdered at the Nova music festival on October 7th. Eyal speaks candidly about grief, Israel’s fracturing political landscape, whether he sees a role for himself in public life—and about the perils and promise of artificial intelligence.

Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib is a Palestinian American humanitarian activist, writer, and policy analyst specializing in Gaza’s political and humanitarian affairs. Born in Saudi Arabia to Palestinian parents from Rafah’s Al-Shaboura refugee camp, his family later returned to Gaza, where he survived an Israeli airstrike at age 11, causing permanent hearing loss. After participating in a U.S. State Department exchange program, he sought asylum in the U.S., earning degrees in business administration and intelligence studies. He is the founder of Project Unified Assistance, advocating for a UN-operated humanitarian airport in Gaza, and a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. His work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Forward, Haaretz, and The Wall Street Journal, among others. Despite losing 31 family members in Gaza since October 7, 2024, Alkhatib remains committed to advocating for peace and coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis.
