<itunes:summary>In this episode of NousCast we head inside the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, which we worked with to develop the futures planning and support for young people leaving out-of-home care.

Along the way we'll hear about the needs of young people in care, the ways we co-designed with care leavers and other stakeholders to develop a model that met their needs and the culturally safe space created for First Nations people to get involved.

In this episode we speak to Lynne Matthews, previously a social worker at the Department of Communities and Justice, and Monique Jackson, a Nous Principal based in Sydney who led the project.

You can read more about Nous projects on our website.

What does the future hold for regional Australia?

Guest speakers Dr Rachel Bacon, Deputy Secretary for the Regional and Territories Group at the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities; Councillor Jenny Hill, Mayor of Townsville, QLD; and Dr Rebecca Huntley, Author and Principal at social research firm Vox Populi Research join Simon Smith, Principal at Nous Group and former NSW Department of Industry secretary and Dr Prins Ralston, Principal and leader of Nous’ Queensland practice discuss the future for regional Australia. The panel examines both the greatest challenges and most promising opportunities for Australia’s regional and rural areas that outwardly reflect the core of our national character. Regional hubs power and nourish the nation, providing many of those living in our cities with the quality of life that urban-dwelling Australians have come to expect. However, more often Australia’s regions are discussed in our capital cities in the context of natural disasters, challenging social issues, alienated voters, and slow or declining business growth. Collectively, the panel explore what a prosperous future for regional Australia could look like.

Guest speakers Justin Mohamed, Victorian Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, and Joumanah El Matrah, CEO of the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights, join Nous Group’s Tim Orton and Deb May to discuss the continuing barriers to inclusion for Australians from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The panel discusses how the dangers of discrimination and unconscious bias hold back individuals, companies, communities, and the country as a whole. Justin and Joumanah share their personal stories of facing racism, suspicion and exclusion and going on to become leaders in their fields, and share their advice for how these dangerous and restrictive attitudes can be dismantled and eventually eradicated. Collectively, the panel discusses how Australian organisations can create and sustain equal opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds to contribute and thrive in their workplace, thereby building stronger businesses and communities, and eventually a stronger nation, piece by piece.
