In the spirit of National Mentoring Month, I’d like to share the story of my relationship with my grandfather and how his storytelling shaped my life.

My first mentor was my grandfather, Charles S. Crook, II, a decorated Captain in the US Army in World War II, who is now buried in Arlington Cemetery.

As soon as I turned five, my grandfather made it a tradition to pick me up in his big 1970s Cadillac convertible to run errands with him in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. He was a six-foot tall man with a booming voice and a swagger that let you know he wasn’t anybody’s fool. He wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy, but he and I understood one another and enjoyed our trips out together each week.

Generativity is a life stage posited by developmental psychologist Erik Erikson. In this life stage, we can expect personal fulfillment, legacy, and personal growth. We are drawn to give back to others in such ways as volunteering, mentoring, and philanthropy. Those of us who do not engage in Generativity can expect to be in Erikson's stage of Stagnation. The example I give of this is what I call The Ebineezer Effect. Having all the things life can physically offer us, but without experiencing the emotional joy to accompany it. It wasn't until Ebineezer Scrooge, who was a self-made guy, living in a mansion with servants, gave back, that he experienced joy. The ways we can engage in Generativity are Volunteering, Mentoring, and Philanthropy.
