Time can help provide perspective. It can also be used as an excuse for not recording an episode in about a month. I’ll let you guess as to which is the reason for the delay in getting you a pod recapping the 2023 Orioles.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Orioles play a baseball game. They were most recently being swept by the now-World Series champion Texas Rangers. Does it make it sting a little less than the Rangers went on to win the whole thing? Maybe, maybe not.

We can all admit at this point that the 2023 Orioles were a team with flaws. Those flaws were exposed by the Rangers. But make no mistake that this was a very, very good team. Winning 101 games is no accident, and even if future Orioles teams go farther in the postseason it’s entirely possible than none of them match this year’s team in terms of regular season performance. They were special.

Kyle Bradish emerged as a Cy Young candidate. Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson appear plenty capable of carrying the offense for the forseeable future. The farm system remains overflowing with talent. Things are going well in Birdland! Everything except for maybe the owner being a repugnant jerk, but that is from an Orioles-specific problem.

On this episode we dig into the highs and lows of a magical season, and we compare reality to our preseason predictions.

It has been a long road back for the Baltimore Orioles, their players, and their fan base. They have endured some absolutely brutal stretches of baseball, becoming the butt of every easy joke around baseball in the process.

To be fair, some of the was deserved! It was the direct result of decisions made by high-ranking people within the organization to tear everything down to the studs and rebuild. That leads to some ugliness. But right about now it feels worth it because the Orioles are headed back to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

As of this writing the O’s are now two games up in the AL East, have the tiebreaker over the second-place Rays, and 13 games left on the schedule. While their spot in the playoffs is secured, their seeding is anything but. They can’t cool their jets just yet if they want to win the East and the first-round bye that comes with it.

On this week’s episode the guys chat about that, look forward to some playoff roster decisions to be made, and celebrate the accomplishments of the Orioles young roster.

Who's leading off for the Orioles? (Ep. 108)

Somehow, someway the Orioles continue trucking along. Cedric Mullins remains sidelined, but the Birds have been able to make do. Aaron Hicks has regained his form from many years ago, Gunnar Henderson may be breaking out, and the team’s best form could yet be ahead of it.

The Mullins absence has sent Brandon Hyde searching for his replacement atop the daily lineup. For a while, Adam Frazier seemed to be the top choice, but with his numbers slipping other options emerged. Austin Hays was given a shot, and most recently it has been Henderson that’s given it a go.

Hyde is yet to settle on one name over another, and he may not have to. But there are scenarios where Adley Rutschman might make sense in that spot, or even Hicks if he keeps getting on base the way he has since joining the Birds. Hopefully all of this is just temporary and Mullins makes his way back soon. He remains the best possible choice, and allows the likes of Henderson, Hays and others to slide down into run-producing roles, where they best fit.

Good Wins, Bad Injury News (Ep. 107)

Injuries are a perennial variable that every team attempts to plan for, but it is ultimately impossible to fully safeguard against.

The Orioles are intimately familiar with that right now. As the team continues to exceed expectations, they now have to wrangle with some high profile bumps and bruises.

By far the most important injury has happened to centerfielder Cedric Mullins. Arguably the team’s most important player, Mullins exited a game over the weekend with a quad injury. Thankfully, it does not appear to be too serious, but the star outfielder will still be sidelined for several weeks at least.

Elsewhere, the pitching crunch is real. In the same week that rookie Grayson Rodriguez was demoted for poor play, the O’s also found out that two veterans they were depending on for return later this summer could still be a ways away.

John Means, the potential ace of this thin starting staff, suffered a setback in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. The setback was in his back, not his surgically-repaired elbow. That’s good news, but it will still push his return beyond the originally anticipated July window.

In the bullpen, the O’s will be without Dillon Tate for a bit longer as he had a stress reaction during his own rehab from an off-season injury. The Orioles reliever group is doing just fine in its current state, but Tate would nonetheless boost a back-end crew that has started to see a few cracks in recent weeks.

The trade deadline is still two months away, but it is becoming ecident that Mike Elias and the team’s front office will need to bolster the roster in some significant way if they wish to buoy the playoff chances of this still-surging ball club.

Beating good teams! (Ep. 106)

May is halfway over, and the Orioles remain atop the AL Wild Card standings. Things have changed. The competition has gotten stiffer. And the O’s rate of wins has slowed. But they are still winning more than they are losing, and there are signs of progress throughout the roster.

Dean Kremer is pitching better. Gunnar Henderson is hitting the ball harder. Tyler Wells is carrying the rotation. And the bullpen remains amazing!

At the same time, there are also some issues. Grayson Rodriguez has had rookie growing pains. Jorge Mateo looks like his 2022 self at the plate again. And no one in the AL East looks like dropping out of this race any time soon.

All in all, these are happy times in Birdland! The team’s hot start has bought them some cushion for the remainder of the season. To this point, they haven’t really needed it, but it’s nice to have.

The Orioles might actually be good! (Ep. 105)

One month of the 2023 season is in the books, and these Orioles continue to be a lot of fun to watch night in and night out. Sure, the schedule they have played thus far has not exactly been a gauntlet of contenders. But you can only play the schedule in front of you, and the O’s have conquered the weary foes that have dared take them on.

It’s not all perfect, of course. The starting pitching isn’t good. In fact, it has been downright bad in recent weeks. Thankfully, Grayson Rodriguez is improving with every start, and Tyler Wells is having himself another impressive first half. Reinforcements will be needed. The internal options are lacking, and that includes the eventual return of John Means from Tommy John surgery. Means has been great in an Orioles uniform, but depending on someone that has been on the shelf for an entire year is a dicey proposition.

But now isn’t the time to dwell on the negative. The reality is that these Orioles are 10 games over .500, which buys them a decent amount of wiggle room for the remainder of the season. You might not clinch a playoff spot in April, but you sure can lose one. At the very least, the O’s have set themselves up to be competitive in the months ahead.

A mixed bag of early results for the Orioles (Ep. 104)

Nearly three weeks of the 2023 season are in the books, and this year’s version of the Baltimore Orioles looks…good? The starting pitching has been (as expected!) a problem, both because of an unfortunate injury to Kyle Bradish and some poor performances from just about everyone not named Kyle Gibson. And the defense has left a lot to be desired. But what cannot be denied is the torrid start to the year for the Baltimore bats.

Jorge Mateo is leading a resurgent Orioles offense with plenty of help from all-world catcher Adley Rutschman. Meanwhile, Ryan Mountcastle has rediscovered his home run trot and Cedric Mullins has worked out some early-season struggles to become the table setter they needed. And don’t forget Austin Hays, who is just casually boasting an OPS over 1.000.

There is still work to be done, of course. Anthony Santander and Gunnar Henderson are both striking out a whole bunch with less power than expected. But once either one of them gets going, this could be the deepest lineup in the game. You may have expected them to be better than they were in 2022, but the amount of production so far has been impressive.

On top of that, the O’s bullpen once again looks like a weapon. Félix Bautista might be the best closer in baseball, Danny Coulombe and his slider are twisting hitters in knots, and Bryan Baker has brought his attitude to the mound.

It’s only been 16 games as of this writing, but the Orioles are on a 90+ win pace, and it sure feels like there is room to improve.

Orioles 2023 Season Preview (Ep. 103)

Ah, the joy of recording a podcast slightly early and then seeing news come down that entirely contradicts a chunk of the topics covered. So is the life of a sports podcast just days away from the beginning of baseball season.

Hopefully you still enjoy these 90+ minutes full of roster analysis, season predictions, and rosy ambition. Think of this as the most mundane time machine you could imagine that is only capable of transporting you to last week, when it seemed like Grayson Rodriguez was guaranteed an Opening Day roster spot and you had no idea Danny Coulombe existed. Simpler times indeed.

You can rest assured that some of the content in this episode is still relevant to the present day. There are discussions about the Orioles fascination with a backup first baseman, what the plan is with Gunnar Henderson, and how they will manage a bullpen with crucial injuries to begin the year. Plus, we make predictions that are sure to go wrong. That’s always fun to bottle up and throw back in our face months later.

Orioles Offseason In Review 2022-23 (Ep. 102)

Long time no see! Since the winter is drawing to a close, we figured it was time to hop on the mic and digest all of the moves the Orioles made (or didn’t) in our first episode of 2023.

In case you missed it, Mike Elias swapped out one trio of veterans for another with the additions of Kyle Gibson, Adam Frazier, and James McCann. He also boosted the bullpen with the return of Mychal Givens. And he even gave the rotation a little love with a trade for Cole Irvin.

It was not the dream offseason many of us envisioned. The starting staff remains without an obvious ace, although the promotion of Grayson Rodriguez could result in such an outcome. And the lineup is deeper overall but still feels a bit shallow in the power department. But all in all, the Orioles are better in February of 2023 than they were in October of 2022. For a team that just missed out on a playoff spot by a couple of games, that could be significant.

Some other good vibes came from the minors, where the Orioles once again received high marks from all over the industry. 11 different prospects made their way on to various Top 100 lists, and the organization as a whole is viewed as one of the most talent-rich in the sport.

Of course it wasn’t all good news. Another development this offseason was a total breakdown in public relations between ownership and the fanbase. John Angelos had a weird press conference, the lease at Camden Yards expires in December, and the MASN case continues on. All of that could be resolved sometime this summer, but it does take away from the warm fuzzies for the time.

Recapping the 2022 Baltimore Orioles (Ep. 99)

Unlike the previous four seasons, it was sad to see this Orioles campaign come to an end. September was a tough month, and ultimately they finished a few games out of the playoff picture. But it was the most magical season we’ve seen in these parts in quite some time, and promised a bright future.

A crucial offseason is ahead of this organization. Mike Elias has promised “liftoff” and claimed that the Orioles are now “back in the fight” for AL East supremacy. How that manifests in the winter months remains to be seen.

But there is plenty of time for that. As October continues on, and we watch the teams that edged out the O’s for a postseason spot, it feels appropriate to reflect on 2022, point out what went well, what could have gone better, and how we feel about the squad before any sort of transactions take place.

That is what this week’s episode is all about! Celebrate the good times. Give Brandon Hyde his plaudits. Shout out the unsung heroes. And everything in between!

AL Wild Card Race Getting Tight (Ep. 98)

Things are getting tense! There’s just about a month left in the 2022 MLB season, and your Baltimore Orioles are in this thing. But the room for error is close to zero at this point, and only getting smaller.

As of this writing, the O’s are 4.5 games out of the AL’s final wild card spot following a disastrous series with the team right in front of them, the Toronto Blue Jays. But all hope is not lost. The O’s and Jays will see each other six more times as the season comes to a close, technically plenty of time for the good guys to track down the inferior organization up north.

Even still, it’s a tall task and one that will require the Orioles and manager Brandon Hyde to approach every inning like their postseason lives are on the line.

Not only is the playoff chase on, but there is a chance that the Orioles still have one more high-profile promotion up their sleeves

Grayson Rodriguez has made two rehab starts already, and everything feels like the top pitching prospect in baseball is going to make it to Baltimore before it’s all said and done. That alone won’t be enough to propel these Birds to the playoffs, but it would be a needed boost to a pitching staff that has started to show some signs of slowing down.

All the while, Hyde is trying to find a lineup combination that can produce. The bats have cooled along with the weather, particularly Austin Hays. The O’s could use a blowout or two in the next week to get their pitching in order ahead of a length stretch without off days to round out the campaign.

Draft & Trade Deadline Look Back (Ep. 97)

It can be difficult to properly assess substantial transactions in the moment. The draft is a barrage of scouting reports and highlight videos that the typical fan can never hope to properly digest. The trade deadline is full of rumors and whining that can blur reality. Sometimes it makes sense to slow down, wait, and then provide analysis weeks later.

And sometimes you have a really hectic life that prevents you from getting a relevant podcast up in a timely way.

Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe.

The Orioles were busy at the end of July and start of August. They took Jackson Holliday with the number one overall pick, and then sold at the deadline, moving Trey Mancini and Jorge Lopez to a disappointed—but not surprised—response from the fan base.

It was a conscious decision from the front office to not supplement the 2022 Orioles with major league talent. Instead, they will fill holes from the inside and make their best effort to get to the postseason regardless.

More than two weeks have passed since this podcast was actually recorded. Surprisingly, the Orioles remain in the thick of the playoff race and could be nearing a promotion of several prominent prospects. Whether that was the expectation from Mike Elias and company, you cannot argue that this team, as assembled, is the best in Baltimore since at least 2016.

What a wonderful and weird season 2022 has been.

The Orioles are actually good now (Ep. 96)

It may not feel like it following a series loss in Tampa and dropping three of four overall, but the Orioles are playing some good baseball in the month of August. They even hopped into a playoff spot and third place in the AL East momentarily.

Being in this position one year ago seemed unimaginable, even with the impending promotions of prospects, including Adley Rutschman. This team is unrecognizable from the 2021 squad in the best possible way.

Things do get harder from here. There are whole lot of games left against the Blue Jays and a couple of series with the Astros. It’s an uphill climb, but there remains something special about this team. So I won’t count againt them until they prove differently.

In this episode, the guys talk about that level of play, Jorge Mateo’s bat, Anthony Santander’s power, Félix Bautista’s warm-up music, and D.L. Hall’s future.

Draft & Trade Deadline Extravaganza (Ep. 95)

The Orioles have won 10 in a row, their longest streak of the century! They are a WINNING baseball team in July for the first time since 2017. I feel the magic happening, which is why now is the perfect time to talk about the future instead.

Let’s be honest, Mike Elias is not going to go “all in” on the 2022 Orioles, and we could probably agree that there is some sense to that plan. After all, we all know this roster has some notable holes that likely preclude it from a deep postseason run. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be a whole lot of fun to see them try anyway.

But with the MLB Draft just days away, and the trade deadline a couple of weeks later, we figured we would pack the two topics together into an extravaganza of epic baseball-ing proportions.

For now, this is our final planned episode of July, but a seismic trade or a noteworthy draft could change that.

Orioles on the upswing (Ep. 94)

The Baltimore Orioles might be a good team. As of this writing, they have won eight games in a row, they are two games out of a wild card spot, and their team vibes are absolutely off the charts.

Contributions are coming from all over. Adley Rutschman is no longer a prospect. The rotation continues to chug along. And the bullpen (for the most part) is still lights out.

In this week’s episode, the guys touch on all of that good stuff, plus some of the bad, including a rough week for Jorge López and the blackhole at the bottom of the Orioles lineup.

But let’s keep things positive. The O’s are outperforming expectations, putting a fun product on the field, and the future has never been brighter!

The feuding Angelos brothers (Ep. 93)

Oh, Orioles. You just can’t let a week go by without something wild happening, can you? There were some particularly tasty bits since the last time we posted an episode.

The largest morsel of all was news from The Baltimore Banner that the two Angelos brothers that run the Orioles day-to-day are embroiled in a lawsuit…against each other.

The article is required reading for any Orioles fan, but what it boils down to is that Louis is suing John and his mother over control of their father’s money, which includes the Orioles. Allegations are thrown out about moving the franchise to Nashville, a secret firing of Brady Anderson, and nixing the sale of the team.

It’s a mess, but one that Orioles fans probably don’t need to be too worried about, at least not right now. There is no evidence of the team moving, and it certainly feels like they are headed in the right direction on the field. Things can change, of course, but the typical pace of lawsuits tells us that it could be a while before we see any ramifications of this case.

A sale of the team certainly seems to be on the table, though. It’s something that has been rumored for quite a while, and it makes sense with the patriarch of the family, Peter, in failing health. But the team has taken steps to insure that whomever owns the Orioles will keep them in Baltimore long term. The state of Maryland just dedicated $1.2 billion to update Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium. That is a massive carrot that won’t be guaranteed anywhere else.

Not to mention, if a team were to move to Nashville or Las Vegas, there are far easier teams ripe of the picking. How about the Rays and their perennially empty stadium? Or the Athletics and an ownership group that has completely alienated their fan base?

Adley Rutschman has arrived! (Ep. 92)

This day was a long time coming. Practically from the day he was drafted, Adley Rutschman was the absolute best catcher in the Orioles entire organization. But you know how this game gets played. He needed some seasoning down on the farm while the Orioles suppressed his service time prepared him for the big leagues.

Rutschman’s promotion is exciting for a few reasons. First, he is widely-regarded as the top prospect in baseball. Those types of players don’t always turn into franchise-altering juggernauts, but they are usually pretty darn good and as much upside as you could dream of. That is massive for an Orioles team still building things back up.

But second, it signals a shift for this club. Now that Rutschman has arrived on the scene, it’s go time. If they are going to maximize his abilities they need to start assembling a squad around him. That means getting Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall up to Baltimore before the end of the summer. That means pushing Gunnar Henderson into consideration for the 2023 Opening Day roster. And it could mean getting serious about free agency and big-time trades as soon as this upcoming offseason.

Not all of this is going to happen overnight, and it doesn’t mean the Orioles are going to be a World Series contender by next season. But this should be the start of those sorts of thoughts. This is what the fanbase has been waiting for.

Expectations should be tempered for the immediate future as Rutschman gets his feet wet. But the fanbase should also demand a serious overhaul of this roster over the next 365 days.

Kyle Bradish debuts! (Ep. 91)

It is a shock to no one that the Orioles are in last-place of the AL East and already seeing their meager hopes of a playoff push go up in smoke. For a team still knee-deep in a rebuild, this was the expected outcome. But the way in which they have gotten here is surprising.

The offense has continued to struggle while the pitching staff has cooled off a bit since a white hot start, it remains in fine form. Better yet, they got just a touch more talented this week with the big league debut of Kyle Bradish.

Acquired in the Dylan Bundy trade with the Angels a couple of years ago, Bradish has since been a revelation in the Orioles organization. He quickly vaulted from a future middle relief option to a potential long-term piece of the club’s rotation. He has gotten here with a unique over-the-top arm slot and an uncanny ability to strike out opposing batters.

Bradish’s big league debut was not perfect, but it was exactly what the Orioles need. The rookie threw six strong innings against a Red Sox lineup that has a few big names. He did not strike out hitters at the rate we have become accustomed, but that is almost more impressive. He battled, and he looked like a big leaguer. It will be fun to see what he can do every fifth day for the rest of the year.

Stellar pitching, putrid offense (Ep. 90)

Well, we got what we asked for. The Orioles are playing baseball, and to the surprise of many the pitcher has actually be quite good. But the team is losing anyway as the bats appear to still be in spring training mode.

Let’s try to be positive. How about that bullpen? It seems like nearly every arm that trots in is more effective than the last. That has not been in the case in Baltimore since the days of B-O-B to close our games was in place. It feels good.

And the starter’s haven’t been a disaster. Bruce Zimmermann is on fire, Jordan Lyles has given length, and well, everyone else has been around. Things will get tougher once rosters shrink, but for now it’s a lot of fun.

Eli and Jesse (Tyler is day-to-day with scheduling difficulties) discuss the first week of the season, the trade of Cole Susler and Tanner Scott, and the scuffling Baltimore bats.

Orioles 2022 Season Preview (Ep. 89)

Happy Opening Day, O’s fans! Your favorite team returns for at least one more season of rebuild madness. Adley Rutschman will eventually make his way to Baltimore, Grayson Rodriguez and D.L. Hall too. Camden Yards is 30 years old. John Means day remains the most important part of your week. And Cedric Mullins is back to dazzle us for another summer.

This is a happy day in Charm City, regardless of how bad our team may be. For at least a few hours, they are on level footing with the rest of the league and a seemingly bright future ahead of them.

In this episode the guys go over your normal Opening Day fare: performance predictions, over/unders on when the youngsters get the call, and their hopes and dreams for the next six months.

Be aware that this was recorded a few days prior to the season, so some news was missed, including official rosters and the trade that sent Cole Sulser and Tanner Scott to South Beach.

For now, let’s get hype about 2022 and kill some time before Kevin Brown welcomes us into what looks to be a turning point season for our Birds.

Minor League Preview 2022 (Ep. 88)

Baseball starts this week! Due to the owner-induced lockout, both the majors and minors get underway in a few days. That’s exciting!

For the Orioles, this will be another season in which much of the most interesting goings on take place down on the farm. That is where all of the organization’s biggest names will begin their 2022 campaigns.

For some, like Adley Rutschman, Kyle Stowers, and D.L. Hall, it should be just a short warm-up prior to their debut in Baltimore. For others, it could be longer. And for the especially young ones in the group we will get a chance to watch them play a full season of professional baseball.

There are plenty of storylines that you can dream upon: Rutschman’s emergence, the comeback of Heston Kjerstad, a full look at the 2021 draftees, and what the future of the Orioles’ infield could look like.

And perhaps the biggest moment could once again belong to the draft, where the O’s will be picking first overall, and are poised to have the largest signing pool in the league. For at least one more year, the sport’s best farm system will get better.

That’s what this episode is all about, with a major league-specific episode to follow later this week.

Baseball Unlocked! (Ep. 87)

The lockout is no more! Just days after we assumed it would drag on for weeks or even months more, the players and team owners came to an agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. As expected, the players got screwed, but just less so than before. So, yay?

It’s kind of impossible to determine how good or bad a CBA is right away. We need to see how the league and owners poke holes it in and exploit weaknesses. Rest assured, it will happen.

But what is undoubtedly positive is that the players succeeded in raising the minimum salary and the creation of the pre-arbitration bonus pool. Both of them should be bigger, but it is an improvement and should provide players with more compensation earlier in their careers.

On this week’s episode the guys discuss the specifics of the deal and remain annoyed with billionaires. Then, they dive into the bits of Orioles news that have rolled in, including the Carlos Correa rumors that feel too good to be true.

The Owners are to Blame (Ep. 86)

We are back for the 2022 season! Only, there is no season, at least not yet. That is because the owner-imposed lockout of MLB players has reached its fourth month, and there is no end in sight.

It has been a not-so-shocking display of selfishness on the part of team owners. They have budged in their demands, but only slightly, and they have remained steadfast in their goal of continued suppression of player salaries. The latest proposal from owners saw them ask for a CBT threshold of $220 million for the next three seasons, an insultingly low offer that the players rejected it out of hand.

This past week also saw commissioner Rob Manfred announce that the start of the season will be cancelled with no plans to make up the six games that are axed. We will see if that stands to pass if the owners wish to prorate player salaries as a result.

It is unclear where we go from here. The two sides are expected to continue meeting behind closed doors in New York, but there is no specific timeline. What does seem clear is this: the league wants more playoff teams while the players want a bigger piece of the revenue pie. The unfortunate middle ground is going to be a massive playoff field in exchange for a higher CBT threshold. According to Manfred, this is what fans want. There does not seem to be any evidence to support that, but the sooner we accept the reality of the situation the easier it may be to swallow.

On this week’s episode, the guys talks about the labor negotiations and explain why the owners are screwing the players, and why the players are happy to get screwed, just a little less than they currently have endured.

Love Locked Out (Ep. 85)

It’s a lockout! Baseball (for the most part) is on hold until MLB and the team owners settle on just how greedy they want to be. As of this writing, that turns out to be really, really greedy. So, no moves can be made related to team’s 40-man rosters, and there is no end in sight.

Prior to the lockout, the Orioles actually did a bit of business on the major league side of things. They signed Rougned Odor, and they agreed to terms with Jordan Lyles. Neither of those guys is particularly good, but they are capable of holding onto a big league job for an entire season. Progress?

Other news that occurred while we were away were the 40-man roster additions of D.L. Hall, Kyle Bradish, Terrin Vavra, Felix Bautista, and Logan Gillaspie. The first three were expected while the last two were a tad surprising, but worrying too much about the fringes of the 40-man roster is enough to drive a person insane, so don’t ruminate too long.

Previewing the Orioles' Offseason (Ep. 84)

No one really knows what this offseason will bring for Major League Baseball or its teams. The Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players and team owners is set to expire in December, a point at which the hot stove is rather tepid. A work stoppage could hault all player movement and clouds whether or not a 2022 season will happen on time or at all. But for our purposes, let’s act as if all is normal, and think about what the Orioles might do in the months in front of them.

As of this writing, the 40-man roster has already been whittled down. But (of course!) this episode was record prior to the flurry of moves earlier this week. Even still, many of the arguments put forth hold strong.

Mike Elias and his crew are going to be active. That may not end in them signing Carlos Correa, but it should include a major league deal or two and a roster that is more intriguing than what the team ended with in 2021. A low bar, I know.

Some of the biggest question marks are around what notable players the Orioles move out of the organization. Anthony Santander could be on the trading block, as could Trey Mancini and D.J. Stewart.

Beyond that, fans will be interested to know what is done to address a pitching staff that was struggling to survive a season ago. John Means is locked into the rotation, but little else is certain. A major league deal or two to add innings would be appreciated.

With several of the organization’s highly-regarded prospects nearing major league-ready, Baltimore’s roster needs to improve in a big way. That won’t happen in one fell swoop, but it should inch forward before the team reconvenes in Sarasota this spring.

The 2021 Orioles: In Memoriam (Ep. 83)

OK, so we are a little late on this. Reviewing the Orioles’ dreadful 2021 wasn’t exactly the most exciting endeavor. But this is an Orioles podcast, so it had to be done!

The win-loss record was not pretty. At 52-110, our O’s ended up tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks with the worst record in Major League Baseball. Perhaps the only respite is that, because of several tie-breakers, the Orioles will be the team to end up with the top pick in next year’s draft as well as the large signing bonus pool that comes with it. Cool.

Upon further review, there were some nice moments for this team: Trey Mancini’s return, John Means’s no-hitter, Cedric Mullins earning a starting spot in the All-Star Game. That’s a pretty great list for a team that lost so many games.

On this week’s episode, the guys review the 2021 season, discuss what went wrong, give out awards, and celebrate the highlights.

Positives in a putrid season (Ep. 82)

You have to hand it to the Orioles. For having such a terrible record, and a disastrous record overall, there have been some memorable moments. John Means threw a no-hitter. Cedric Mullins is going to get MVP votes. Pat Valaika…well, he definitely did something at some point.

But all of that is nearly over. The O’s 2021 season ends in just a few days. For some, that comes as welcome relief. For others, it is a sad sign of summer’s end, and the start of baseball’s long hibernation in Baltimore.

Before that happens, though, let’s celebrate the good times. On this week’s final regular season episode the guys talk about Mullins’s achievement, the emergence of Chris Ellis, the improvement of the young pitchers, and the future of Kyle Stowers.

Brandon Hyde to return as Orioles manager (Ep. 81)

The finish line is within sight. The Orioles’ difficult season is nearly over. And it feels fair to say that these last few weeks have left many within the fanbase feeling a tad rosier about 2022 than they did in the midst of last month’s lengthy losing streak.

First, we have Cedric Mullins just crossing the 30/30 threshold on Friday night. That is a massive achievement, and should give the O’s their table-setter for the next few years at least.

Then, you have some of the top prospects in baseball nearing the major league level. In fact, GM Mike Elias just said that both Grayson Rodriguez and Adley Rutschman will be given a chance to make the club out of spring training. Who knows if that’s just lip service, but it sounds nice.

And finally, we have some clarity on the dugout, where Brandon Hyde will retain his job to begin the 2022 season. Opinions on the skipper vary, but it’s tough to think of a logical replacement given where the organization is in their massive rebuild. They are unlikely to push for a playoff spot next year, and Hyde has shown to be a decent man for the moment.

The Orioles are actually kind of fun (Ep. 80)

It’s no secret that this has been a difficult season for the Orioles, their players, and their fans. Apart from an outstanding summer of sustained success by Cedric Mullins, this has largely been a trainwreck that did not provide the positive future glimpses that many hoped for back in the spring.

August was particularly bad, including a 19-game losing streak. But the O’s were able to exorcise some demons at the end of last month and have started September looking much better. Mullins has remained spectacular, but he is joined by Tyler Wells looking like a closer-in-waiting, Ramón Urías pushing for an everyday role next season, and many of the young pitchers appearing much improved from earlier in the year.

For the first time in what feels like forever, the guys chat about some good things that the Orioles have done over the last two weeks, plus they make fun of Kyle Farnsworth.

The Orioles stopped the losing...for a little while (Ep. 79)

Well that sucked.

The Orioles recently wrapped up a 19-game losing streak in improbable fashion, beating the Los Angeles Angels, in a game in which superstar Shohei Ohtani started, and then went on to actually win the series outright.

It was a nightmare skid that saw the Orioles’ pitching staff absolutely implode and nearly guarantees that the team will be picking atop next summer’s amateur draft. Depending on where you find yourself in the fandom, maybe that’s a good thing. But it certainly wasn’t enjoyable baseball.

The guys get into all of the nastiness that was the losing streak, plus an analysis of recent shakeups on the infield and in the bullpen, in addition to some guesses at September call-ups. It’s a therapeutic episode!

Chris Davis retires, National writers rip Orioles (Ep. 78)

We finally have our answer to the perennial topic among Oriole fans: “When will the team just cut Chris Davis?” Ultimately, they never did; at least not officially. Davis announced his retirement this week following a lengthy rehab of a hip that reportedly was not responding to treatment. He will still get his entire contract. The pay timeline will just change a little bit.

Davis’ legacy as an Oriole is complicated. From 2012 through 2016 he was one of the best players in the league on the team that had won more regular season games than any other club in that time. He deserved a big contract, and it was understandable that the Orioles were the team to give it out. But that doesn’t make the five seasons of subpar play that followed to be any easier to swallow.

On this week’s episode, the guys talk about Davis, his time as an Oriole, and how he will be remembered. Later, they join the scores of Oriole fans annoyed by the way in which the national media has decided to rip the Orioles’ rebuild this week.

Way Too Late Orioles Trade Deadline Recap (Ep. 77)

That may have been the most insane trade deadline of all-time. All-stars, former Cy Youngs, and top prospects were dealt from coast-to-coast, and the entire playoff race has been turned on its head. Every single team made at least one trade, and that includes your favorite source of frustration, the Baltimore Orioles.

There had been weeks of discussion surrounding the players that the O’s front office may or may not make available. Ultimately, the only guys that got moved were a formerly DFA’ed reliever and an injured veteran shortstop. The incoming talent was a mid-tier relief prospect plus some cash.

On the excitement scale, it’s fair to say the Orioles fanbase was quite low. But it wasn’t entirely surprising. Much of the current roster is under team control for quite some time, and it likely proved difficult to find a match on the market. That could make for a busy winter for Mike Elias and crew.

On this week’s episode, the guys chat about the deadline, the future of Trey Mancini, the return of Richie Martin, and when Adley Rutschman will leave Bowie.

Second Half, Best Half (Ep. 76)

Winning baseball games is more fun than losing baseball games. That’s just science.

The Orioles have been doing a lot more winning since the conclusion of the All-Star break than they were prior to the Midsummer Classic. Does that mean the Orioles are good now? No, but they might be less bad, and that’s worth celebrating.

Other things work celebrating all happened at or near the All-Star Game. Trey Mancini put on a show in the Home Run Derby, Cedric Mullins started the game, and Mike Elias has another draft class in the books. That was all pretty great, so the podcast focuses on it this.

Also up for debate is what the Orioles will do at this year’s trade deadline despite not having a ton of obvious chips worth dealing. Could Trey Mancini be headed out of town? Will the bullpen be up for sale? It will all become clear in just a few days.

Future Focused (Ep. 75)

There was actual fun baseball stuff to talk about this week. Imagine that! The Orioles were bad on the field once again, but that won’t damper the mood as Trey Mancini is about to take part in the annual Home Run Derby, Cedric Mullins should be starting in the All-Star Game, and Colton Cowser is the newest Orioles minor leaguer.

It was a rare good week in Birdland, and the week ahead is promising to be even better. For a podcast that focuses on a team about to lose 110 games, you take the positives where you can get them.

The boys discuss all of the above, plus they have a frank discussion at the end about the limits of tanking and the responsibility a front office has to maintain a watchable product while being open with the fanbase about the immediate future. Oh no, we suck again (Ep. 73)

In case you are new around here, a quick update: the 2021 Orioles are not a good baseball team. But they have often managed to be a fun baseball team. Unfortunately, they failed to achieve even that modest standard over this past week, often playing like a club that was leagues away from their opposition.

The starting pitching struggled, sure, but that’s par for the course for this group. What was truly shocking was how poor the defense behind those pitchers played. Stevie Wilkerson completely fell apart in Cleveland. Pedro Severino continues to have trouble simply catching the ball behind the plate. Heck, even Cedric Mullins made an error, and that guy has a shot at a Gold Glove.

All the while, the Orioles were losing games. Their 16 straight defeats on the road are a club record, and yet somehow only the second-longest active streak (shout-out D-Backs).

On this week’s show, Jesse is out, so Tyler and Eli discuss the Orioles’ latest struggles, Grayson Rodriguez’s Double-A debut, the logistics of gas can caretaking, and the extremes to which MLB has bungled the restrictions on sticky substances.

The delineation between months is completely arbitrary. But the act of flipping the calendar to a fresh slate can cleanse the mind, and allow us to look forward to new beginnings. Whatever the case may be, the Orioles are playing far better in June than they did at any point in May.

Just 10 days in, the O’s have already matched their win total (five) from the previous month. While just about everything has been firing on all cylinders, it’s the offense that really stands out.

Ryan Mountcastle was rewarded with AL Player of the Week honors after finally showing off the power that had gone untapped to this point. Joining him for consideration of that accolade was surely center fielder Cedric Mullins, who is back to hitting like he did in the season’s early weeks while also playing Gold Glove-level defense.

This week, Tyler and Jesse recap the week that was, get excited about the ever-improving outlook for Grayson Rodriguez, and worry about the O’s going under-slot with next month’s first-round pick.

Life After Losing (Ep. 71)

It never fails. An episode is recorded (including a myriad of technical difficulties), and then a bunch of interesting things happen soon after, preventing the flawless opinions of The Warehouse Podcast from hitting your ears.

You won’t hear mention of the John Means injury, the run of four wins in five games, or Cedric Mullins’s second breakout of the season. That will get covered in the next episode.

Instead, travel back in time a few days and enjoy the pessimism of last week. The boys rejoice over the promotion of Austin Wynns, gush over Grayson Rodriguez, and rehash the Josh Rogers era of Orioles baseball.

But the biggest chunk of this episode revolves around the doctoring of baseballs. Pitchers are doing it. Hitters are complaining about it. MLB says they will address it.

Back to the Dark Ages (Ep 70)

Lather, rinse, repeat. The Orioles have not won a single game since the last time you heard from us. As of this writing, their losing streak is at 14, three games longer than it was when the guys recorded this episode. *sigh*

Losing is not a surprise for this team, but the consistency with which they have done it is something to behold. It doesn’t seem to matter who is pitching or who they are playing or what the lineup looks like. Rest assured that these Orioles will find a way to lose.

At least we have minor league box scores to look at and dream on. Without the offensive onslaughts in Delmarva, and the ever-present pummeling of baseballs by Adley Rutschman this summer would be very dark.

It’s not that these stretches of prolonged bad-ness are unexpected for a team in the middle of an extensive rebuild, but that doesn’t make it any less miserable to experience in the moment.

That’s not to say that these last two weeks are the low-point of the Orioles organizational reconstruction. But it might be the most frustrating since this roster feels substantially more talented than some of the most recent renditions.

Alas, this too shall pass.

Some noteworthy —heck, even good—things have occurred this week. Anthony Santander is back, which should provide the offense with a boost. Chris Davis has officially been put on the shelf for the season. And Rio Ruiz has been DFA’ed.

A Bad Week in Birdland (Ep. 68)

John Means is the best pitcher in the world (Ep. 67)

For the last 25 years, poor starting pitcher has been as much a part of the Orioles organizational fabric as the Crab Shuffle, strolls down Eutaw Street, and off-beat clapping to “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.” It’s cultural.

But for a brief moment this week, that quarter century of ineptitude on the mound was washed away by what may go down as the most brilliant performance by an Orioles pitcher.

John Means threw the club’s first no-hitter since 1991, and their first complete game no-hitter since Hall of Famer Jim Palmer in 1969.

The Orioles lefty was incredible, featuring the absolute best version of his changeup, staying ahead of the Seattle hitters, and cruising to what was a dropped third strike away from a perfect game.

On this week’s episode, the guys discuss the Means no-no, what it does to his future with the team, and where the southpaw currently sits in the “ace” pecking order. Later, they talk trade candidates, minor league baseball, the second base situation, and managing young pitchers.

Better Than Expected (Ep. 66)

It’s all about small victories when your team is going through a rebuild. The Orioles were given a tough seven-game home stand against the Athletics and Yankees, and they emerged from it in pretty good shape. Going 3-4 at the friendly confines isn’t going to get a club into the playoff picture, but it represented a big improvement over the O’s first slate of home games earlier this month.

More specifically, John Means continued to deal, Matt Harvey put together his best outing as an Oriole, Trey Mancini found his power, and Cedric Mullins remained amazing.

With nearly a month of the 2021 season in the books, the complexion of this team is becoming more clear. But there remains plenty of time for wayward trends to right themselves.

On this week’s episode, the guys chat about the current state of the Orioles rotation, the departure of Wade LeBlanc, the brief promotion of Zac Lowther, and the impact of the Freddy Galvis injury.

Road Wins & Lineup Woes (Ep. 65)

There are problems with the current iteration of the Orioles. That was to be expected. After all, they are in the midst of an extensive rebuild that is still nowhere near its completion. But the issues that ail the O’s are not the things that were expected to be a bother throughout the winter.

The team’s pitching has actually been pretty good. Sure, we could nit-pick at guys like Shawn Armstrong or Jorge López, but it makes more sense to praise standout performances from John Means, Bruce Zimmermann, and basically the entirety of the bullpen. Not to mention that Matt Harvey has been a surprisingly stable presence in the middle of the rotation.

Instead, the trouble has come from the Orioles lineup, which has found itself in far too many low-scoring affairs and unable to hit their way out of it. That issue was compounded this week as right fielder Anthony Santander sprained his left ankle while retreating to first base on a pick-off attempt. He’s expected to be out up to four weeks.

On this week’s episode, the guys discuss the lengthy slump of Ryan Mountcastle, the injury to Santander, the possibility of trading Means, and the return of first-round pick Heston Kjerstad.

This is a Cedric Mullins appreciation podcast now (Ep. 64)

There wasn’t much to get excited about in the first full week of the Orioles 2021 season. They lost…like, a lot. After leaving the Bronx with just one win, the O’s were then swept by the very same Red Sox that appeared inept just days earlier and then dropped the series opener to the Mariners.

But fret not, my fellow Birdland brethren. We have Cedric Mullins, and really that’s enough, isn’t it? After all, Mullins does everything. Not only does he lead the league in hits, but the guy also steals bases, and plays a smooth centerfield. In short, he’s one of the best players in Major League Baseball. No, seriously.

Mullins’s 0.9 fWAR is fifth best among big league hitters. He’s in the same conversation as Mike Trout, Ronald Acuna Jr., and…erm…Yermin Mercedes. The point is that he’s been really, really job, and been really, really fun to watch. That’s something, and it’s honestly more than should have been expected heading into 2021.

On this week’s episode, the fellas fawn over Mullins, worrying about Ryan Mountcastle’s defense, and contemplate the future of the starting rotation.

Sweeping the Sox and striking out a bunch (Ep. 63)

Your annual source of summertime frustration has returned, and it feels good. The sounds of Orioles baseball will surround you each night from 7:05 p.m. until you start to snore on the couch around 9:45. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Orioles kicked off their 2021 campaign with a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox at their own place. Then they headed up to the boogie-down Bronx, where things have not been going quite as well.

There were stand-out performance from future Cy Young Award winner John Means plus an impressive showing from all parts of the Birds bullpen. Not to mention, Cedric Mullins might be the best center fielder in the American League all of the sudden.

Of course, it wasn’t all positive. The offense, in general, has experienced a power outage and racked up strikeouts in the process. And the backend of the rotation remains shaky.

But the most important thing is that baseball is back, and the crew at The Warehouse Podcast is here to break it all down each week. Predicting The Orioles 2021 Season (Ep. 62)

The 2021 MLB season is nearly upon us, and once again each of the 30 clubs will embark on a 162-game adventure that they hope will end with a ticker tape parade down Main Street in their home cities.

For 29 teams, however, that will not happen. Instead, they will endure an unending six-month slog that concludes with disappointment, missed opportunity, and regret. Aren't sports great!?

Anyway, the Orioles aren't expected to be very good this year. That's OK. Mike Elias has a plan. It's all going to work out and be just fine...just fine...just fine.

On this week's episode the fellas analyze the O's latest roster moves, banter about the mystery of Wade LeBlanc, criticize Elias for letting Zach Pop go, and make predictions about the season to come.

Birdland Tonight (Ep. 61)

The Orioles deserve to be criticized from time to time. Not every signing is brilliant. Not every move makes sense. And not every “business decision” is going to please the public. But the organization also deserves praise when they move things in the right direction, and this past week was a very progressive week for the Birds.

MLB Pipeline ranked the Orioles as the fifth-best farm system in all of baseball, praising the depth of the club’s young talent and the strides the front office has made in establishing a foothold in Latin America. Employing talented players like Adley Rutschman, D.L. Hall, and Grayson Rodriguez is helpful as well.

Then, on Tuesday, the O’s announced that they were going to be building a state-of-the-art training facility in the Dominican Republic, due to open sometime in 2022. While a fancy building alone won’t do much to improve future Oriole teams, it does serve as further proof that they are serious about their pursuits in the region.

It is an exciting time to be an Orioles fan, which is not something you have been able to say with a straight face for a few years. The team is unlikely to be headed to the playoffs this season or next, but suddenly the future doesn’t seem so far away.

Injuries & Lineup Predictions (Ep. 60)

Episodes on back-to-back weeks? What a treat! This edition of TWP is a brisk 72 minutes, and it is packed full of spring training goodness.

The guys reminisce about the career of the understated and under-appreciated Nick Markakis. He will now go off to a post-playing career as far away from the limelight as possible. Thanks for the memories, Nick. We hope to see you at a team Hall of Fame induction in the not-so-distant future.

Then they move on to injury talk, which has them sad about King Felix and the oft-IL’ed Hunter Harvey. But it’s OK because Bruce Zimmermann is dominating and Conor Greene is intriguing.

Finally, they wrap things up with their predictions about what Brandon Hyde’s Opening Day lineup will look like. The most likely outcome: everyone is wrong because Chance Sisco will DH or something dumb like that.
