The hope is these conversations will entertain and inform and give you another perspective to consider when you look at our community.

This episode was recorded at the start of the pandemic. We talk about how she doesn’t really know what to tell her children about COVID-19, what the pandemic will do to the cost of living in our community and how the silver lining of the whole pandemic is the extra time she’ll spend with her children. Susie Sewell from the Camp Schreiber Foundation joins us on this episode.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>On our second episode of the Collective Voice, we covered food deserts. More than 16,000 residents of our neighbors live in food deserts. The episode was an eye-opening look at the problem and offered some insight into how pervasive the issue is in our community. So, when schools closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, we started thinking about the children in our community who rely on the school system to provide breakfast and lunch and how this crisis is only going to exacerbate this issue. On this episode, we check back in with Joe Conway, Director of Health Equity and Human Experience at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, to talk about the community's response to the coronavirus pandemic, lessons learned after Hurricane Florence including how to get food to folks who need it and what our recovery looks like through the lens of equity.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This episode wraps up season one and offers a preview of season two. In the coming week or so we’ll be recasting the whole season with some added data, graphics and updates. Our goal was to start a conversation with season one and come up with a common language around the social determinants of health and how our neighbors are more affected than others.

Let’s keep doing that.

Season two is going to focus exclusively on race and equity. We’re going to tackle everything from the Confederate statues on Market and 3rd Streets to efforts to break down barriers between White and Black churches.

It’s going to be a tough conversation. But it is a conversation we have to have because disasters lay bare the deep inequities of our community. We saw it after Hurricane Florence. We’re going to see it after COVID-19. Now more than ever we need to get together and start building a new system that can tackle these inequities and create a stronger community.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>On this episode, we’re talking to David Beauregard, access and advocacy coordinator at the Disability Resource Center. David was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident in 1976 when he was 20 years old. On this episode, we talk about his work at the center, but more importantly we get a chance to see the world from a wheelchair. David is a great storyteller and it was an eye-opening conversation for me.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>On this episode, we’re talking about housing. Shelter ranks right at the top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. But in Wilmington – like in many places in the nation – finding affordable housing is difficult, if not impossible.

Housing is considered affordable when it doesn’t exceed more than 30 percent of household income. Families that spend more are considered cost burdened. Thirty-two percent of households in New Hanover County are cost burdened.

We’ll start with a conversation with Rachel LaCoe, workforce housing planner with New Hanover County. We talk about the state of affordable housing and some of the things the county is doing to address the issue, including a comprehensive study due later this year. Then, we’ll talk with Steve Spain, executive director of Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity works with families and individuals in need of a decent, affordable place to live. The Cape Fear chapter was founded in 1987. The first house was built in 1989. Steve talks about the need for a housing bond, the cost of money and why Wilmington needs to build up.Finally, we’ll talk with Katrina Redmon, chief executive officer of the Wilmington Housing Authority. She talks about the housing authority’s mission and the resilience and entrepreneurship she sees in the public housing communities daily.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Last fall, a majority of the county commissioners voted to end New Hanover’s direct financial support for Wave, which operates vans, buses and shuttles in New Hanover County and northern Brunswick County. Then in February, county and city officials took over the Wave board to evaluate and potentially restructure the financially struggling public transit agency.

For the next two weeks, we’ll have a conversation about transportation. Part one, we’ll talk with Julie Olson-Boseman, the chair of the New Hanover County Commissioners. She details her thinking around the issue. We also talk to Wave’s Vanessa Lacer about the system, the philosophy used to come up with the routes and how the public perceives the bus.

Finally, in our second part, we ride the bus. We spent a cold and rainy Thursday morning riding Wave’s 101 with Sean Bynum from Step Up, Clark Henry, an urban planning consultant and a board member of the Cape Fear Economic Council. We picked the 101 because it has the highest ridership.</itunes:summary>

New Hanover County’s unemployment rate hovers around 3 percent – slightly lower than the state rate of 3.7 percent and way down from 11 percent in 2010. Adam Jones, regional economist at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Swain Center presented the region’s economic forecast last month and said over the past decade, the region has created more than 30,000 jobs and reduced unemployment by 6.9%

But sometimes, having a job isn’t enough, especially when it doesn’t have a living wage. On today’s episode, we’re having three conversations about jobs with Will Rickard, director of Step Up Wilmington, a nonprofit helping folks find jobs and build skills to create a vibrant workforce and two graduates of his program.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>More than 16,000 residents of Wilmington live in food deserts. And the impact is not just unappetizing meals. Food insecurity leads to a host of health issues ranging from diabetes to gout. In New Hanover County, 6.8 percent or 13,220 adults over 20 years old suffer from diabetes. Those are just the diagnosed cases. Actual numbers are likely higher.

The two biggest risk factors for food insecurity is obesity and physical inactivity and New Hanover County’s numbers are staggering. Slightly more than 26 percent or 46,010 of adults are obese and 22.2 percent or 39,739 of the adults are physically inactive or they haven’t exercised in the past month.

In this episode, we head out into the community to talk with some of the organizations fighting food insecurity and with our neighbors impacted by it.</itunes:summary>
