Connecting with Your Community (Stacey Sherrell and Rachel Facio, Decoding Couples)

Welcome back to another episode of Everything Is Teachable. Today, we're chatting with the dynamic therapist duo, Stacey and Rachel of Decoding Couples. In this episode, we get to know their story of how they decided to work together, the transformations they've provided their students all over the world, best practices for growing your social media accounts, and more.Rachel Facio came up with Decoding Couples originally as a YouTube series with the idea that she and other guests would decode the complicated ins and outs of relationships.

Stacey Sherrell was her first guest and it became obvious, VERY quickly, that it was way more fun discussing these issues together since it is what they had already been doing when the camera wasn’t rolling. Behind the scenes, both Stacey and Rachel were struggling in their personal relationships and couples therapy just wasn’t in the cards. They knew their relationships needed change, but all they could find was fluffy self-help tools that didn’t address issues in a real way. They realized this space needed to exist and they would be the ones to create it with their personal and professional experiences. One day, Stacey walked into Rachel’s office with an Instagram page set up and ready to go, and viola—Decoding Couples was official. In just over a year, Decoding Couples has become known for hilariously informative reels and self-paced courses that are creating REAL, positive change for individuals and couples…without ever needing to leave their couches. For all things creator news, important tips, and more, sign up for Teachable's newsletter here: https://teachable.com/newsletter-signup?utm_source=site&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=newsletter-signup-podcastWhere to find Stacey and Rachel:
Website: www.decodingcouples.com
Teachable school: decoding-couples.teachable.com
Masterclass: https://www.decodingcouples.com/webinar-registration
Instagram: Instagram: www.instagram.com/decoding_couples

Follow Teachable on social media:
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/teachable ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=podcast-instagram
LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/teachable/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=podcast-linkedin
Twitter: https://twitter.com/teachable?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=podcast-twitter
TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@teachablehq?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=podcast-tiktokSee you next week!

Not only is it the last episode of Season 3, but we're also lucky to have two colleagues as our guests—Jess Catorc and Parth Shah, the leads on Teachable's newest education product. In today's episode, we'll get the inside scoop on what creators can expect to see from Teachable's new product, why online courses continue to be a major player in the creator economy (and how influencers can benefit), tips for marketing your online course, and more.

Jess Catorc is an award-winning brand strategist that has helped thousands of entrepreneurs and startups expand their reach and revenue online. She’s been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Inc., The Huffington Post, the ABC television network, and in 2019 was awarded both a Telly and Stevie award for her work.

As a creative video producer, Catorc has developed a unique method using video in outreach and to increase brand awareness. Former Executive Producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Co-President of Harpo Studios and OWN, Sheri Salata, has also praised Jess as “a genius talent and bonafide star”.

As a seasoned public speaker and interviewer, Catorc has spoken at events around the world including Google Campus (UK), Karlie Kloss’s coding bootcamp, and Sound Education FM hosted at Harvard University. She’s also the host of Teachable’s annual virtual summits (with 60,000+ registrants) and over the years has interviewed the likes of Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, Marie Forleo, Jay Shetty, Kim Coles , Lisa Nichols, Jordan Harbinger, and Neil Patel to name a few.

Jess was selected as a leading expert to judge the 18th Generation of Start-up Chile (an initiative of the Chilean government that offers $30k equity-free funding to 100 international startups), and the International Business Awards for the Marketing/Video category.

Jess is currently co-leading creator launch initiatives at Teachable.

Parth is co-leading the new education product and brings a background in teaching and curriculum design. He started his career as a high school teacher where he taught math in Oakland and rural Tanzania. He then moved into online education where he built courses for millions of learners at Codecademy and GitHub. Before coming to teachable, Parth most recently led program design at Lambda School where he built out their experiential learning program and job preparedness program. In this role, Parth is excited to make quality courses that students will love.</itunes:summary>

Starting a Blog (Suzi Whitford, Start a Mom Blog)

Meet Suzi Whitford. When she became a new mom, she still wanted an outlet to explore her creative and tech passions, and when she found blogging, it was an instant click. She’s now started multiple profitable blogs, notably Start a Mom Blog, where she helps other moms follow her exact blogging blueprint to turn their passions into money making blogs.

In this episode, Suzi explains why she loves inexpensive eBooks and courses so much, and how her $18 course has been a huge revenue driver for her business. She also talks about the importance of building email relationships, and why she prefers to email people one on one instead of having a large Facebook community. Lastly, and perhaps more importantly, Suzi explains how you can engage with new blog readers and build long-lasting relationships with them over time. If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, I’m almost positive Suzi will convince you to go for it by the end, whether you’re a mom or not.

To learn more about Suzi Whitford, Start a Mom Blog, or Teachable, visit teachable.com/eit28.

Digital Productivity (Tiago Forte, Forte Labs)

Tiago Forte is the Productivity Expert behind Forte Labs and their signature program, Building a Second Brain. Although Tiago recently welcomed his 10th cohort of students, he’s doing a lot of things that may surprise you.

For one thing, nothing is self paced. The cohort goes through the material at the same time altogether. They also use live Zoom calls instead of creating perfectly pre-produced content, which is what most new creators assume must be done.

In this episode, Tiago shares why he believes pre-produced content isn’t necessarily the best approach for courses of any size. He’ll share the story of how his initial product - a book club - eventually turned into a workshop and then an online course, and how he looks at creativity practically instead of mythically.

And true to his expertise, he also offers a ton of great tips to improve your own workflow and productivity as a course creator. So grab a pen - better yet, a virtual notepad - and get ready to take notes.

To learn more about Tiago, Forte Labs, Building a Second Brain, or Teachable, visit teachable.com/eit22.

We all have a story, and we aren’t so different from each other. We all want to be loved and seen and celebrated.

That’s just one of many powerful messages we’re about to learn today from Charreah Jackson. And today, as an international speaker, author, and certified coach, she’s now honored to help others do the same.

So in this episode, Charreah is here to help you realize that most of us might not see the value in our own skills. However, Kelsey struggled with the same thing many early course creators face, which was an uncertainty around what to teach. But after sketching out a few ideas, he landed on tourism and the Be a Better Guide Project was born.

Even though he had zero pre-existing knowledge about online courses, Kelsey has been able to turn a passion for tourism into a thriving online business to support his family and their global adventures.
Language Podcasts (Mark Pentleton, Coffee Break Languages)

Mark Pentleton is the founder of Coffee Break Languages and the award-winning creator of some of the most popular Education podcasts ever produced. The Coffee Break podcasts were the very first language podcasts geared toward beginners back in 2006, and since then, their suite of language podcasts have collectively been downloaded over 300 million times.

But how did Mark’s business get here? What’s so different about the Coffee Break teaching style that sets their podcasts apart in an increasingly competitive podcast world? Also, since their podcasts are all completely free, how does Radio Lingua - the parent company - actually earn money and bring revenue into their business? In this episode, Mark will share his philosophy on what content they always share for free versus what they charge for, and he’ll also address a common question from new creators: is competition a good sign or a red flag?

Full-Time Blogging (Lauren McManus, Create and Go)

Lauren McManus is a former CPA turned blogger, and she and her business partner, Alex Nerney, run two successful blogs together. Their first blog, Avocadu, is a health and wellness blog that teaches women how to lose weight. After earning six figures with that blog in their first year, they started Create and Go, where they teach others how to start and monetize their own blogs.

But when they first got started, Lauren and Alex quickly realized that their initial product wasn’t selling because, well, no one wanted it. They hadn’t figured out who their customers were yet, and for the first six months, they didn’t earn a dime.

Today, Lauren is here to share how they turned things around in their second attempt. They figured out the #1 way to drive traffic to their blog, they learned that their customers weren’t who they expected, and by 2019, they’ve grown their online business into two successful blogs that earn well over six figures a month while Lauren travels the world.

GUEST SPOTLIGHT: THAO ARMSTRONG
Thao Armstrong is the founder of Don’t Tell Charles and the creator of the original Concrete Cake.

A self-taught cake designer with a background in Landscape Architecture, Thao taught herself to bake cupcakes and macarons, and in 2013, she opened Don’t Tell Charles Coffee & Desserts, a small specialty coffee & dessert shop in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. In 2016 Thao’s focus shifted to cakes and the cafe became Don’t Tell Charles, a designer cake studio specializing in high-end contemporary buttercream cakes.

Thao’s cakes became highly sought after, with clients even flying her internationally to make their wedding cakes. The workshops soon followed with the first ever being held in Singapore in April 2016.

Since then Thao has taught workshops in Sydney, Indonesia, Auckland and London, and close to 100 physical workshops have been held in the Melbourne studio with students flying in from all over the world including the USA, UK, France, Canada, Panama, Argentina, Nigeria, Malaysia and Brazil.

In October 2017, the DTC Online School was established and currently enrols over 6000 students across 6 published courses with many more on the way.
