Cain and Abel are traditional English renderings of the Hebrew names. It has been proposed that the etymology of their names may be a direct pun on the roles they take in the Genesis narrative. Abel (hbl) is thought to derive from a reconstructed word meaning 'herdsman', with the modern Arabic cognate ibil now specifically referring only to 'camels'. Cain (qyn) is thought to be cognate to the mid-1st millennium BCE South Arabian word qyn, meaning 'metalsmith'. This theory would make the names descriptive of their roles, where Abel works with livestock, and Cain with agriculture—and would parallel the names Adam (אדם‎, ‘dm, 'man') and Eve (חוה‎, ḥwh, 'life-giver').[citation needed]

Original appearance

The oldest known copy of the biblical narrative is from the Dead Sea Scrolls, and dates to the first century BCE. Cain and Abel also appear in a number of other texts, and the story is the subject of various interpretations. Abel, the first murder victim, is sometimes seen as the first martyr; while Cain, the first murderer, is sometimes seen as an ancestor of evil. Some scholars suggest the pericope may have been based on a Sumerian story representing the conflict between nomadic shepherds and settled farmers. Modern scholars typically view the stories of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel to be about the development of civilization during the age of agriculture; not the beginnings of man, but when people first learned agriculture, replacing the ways of the hunter-gatherer.

Academic theologian Joseph Blenkinsopp holds that Cain and Abel are symbolic rather than real. Like almost all of the persons, places and stories in the Primeval history (the first eleven chapters of Genesis), they are mentioned nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible, a fact that suggests that the History is a late composition attached to Genesis to serve as an introduction. Just how late is a matter for dispute: the history may be as late as the Hellenistic period (first decades of the 4th century BCE), but the high level of Babylonian myth behind its stories has led others to date it to the Babylonian exile (6th century BCE). A prominent Mesopotamian parallel to Cain and Abel is the Sumerian myth of the Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzid, in which the shepherd Dumuzid and the farmer Enkimdu compete for the affection of the goddess Inanna, with Dumuzid (the shepherd) winning out. Another parallel is Enlil Chooses the Farmer-God, in which the shepherd-god Emesh and the farmer-god Enten bring their dispute over which of them is better to the chief god Enlil, who rules in favor of Enten (the farmer).

There are two deuterocanonical works of the genre known as wisdom literature, one Hebrew and one Greek. The Hebrew work is called Ecclesiasticus,...

The text is the only apocryphal work whose author is known. It was written in Hebrew in Palestine around 180–175 BCE by Ben Sira, who was probably a scribe well-versed in Jewish law and custom.

Ben Sira’s grandson, whose name is unknown, carried the book to Alexandria and translated it into Greek shortly after 132 BCE for Greek-speaking Jews. All the big changes the brain is experiencing may explain why adolescence is a time when many mental disorders—such as schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders—can emerge.

5. Teen brains may be more vulnerable to stress.

Because the teen brain is still developing, teens may respond to stress differently than adults, which could lead to stress-related mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Mindfulness, which is a psychological process of actively paying attention to the present moment, may help teens cope with and reduce stress.

Research shows that melatonin (the “sleep hormone”) levels in the blood are naturally higher later at night and drop later in the morning in teens than in most children and adults. A lack of sleep can make it difficult to pay attention, may increase impulsivity, and may increase the risk for irritability or depression.

A True Friend Consistently Has Your Back

Someone who is a true friend stands up for you. When others try to hurt you emotionally or physically, they do everything they can to make sure you stay safe. They don't care who is trying to harm you; they will defend you anytime, anywhere. If they can help you, they'll do it without reservation or reward. A true friend is not one who repeatedly is telling you negative things other people say about you. First, they make it clear by their words and by their actions where they stand when it comes to you. Secondly, they don't just merely standby silently when others are tearing you down no matter what consequences they may face socially. A true friend is a friend when is convenient and when it is not. They standby you consistently both when you are present and when you are not

They Answer You With Empathy, Perspective, And Honesty

True friends aren't phony with you. They show you who they really are. They're honest with you when it matters most. They never try to deceive you to make themselves seem stronger, more successful, or better than they really are. A true friend goes beyond the surface, any true friendship requires some level of vulnerability. When a friend opens up to you and shares their struggles and disappointments, it is a testament to the trust and value they place in you. Having a friend that shows you that they trust you with their authentic self is a good indicator that you can do the same with them.

A true friend is not only honest about themselves, but they are also honest about you. They are able to have difficult conversations in telling you things that sometimes you may not be eager to hear. The key is that they do it in love and with grace. They don't tear you down but rather a true friend will hold you to a standard they know your character is worthy of.

They Accept You For You Despite Differences 

A real friend accepts you as you are. They can encourage you to become a better version of you, but they also help you see the beauty of who you are right now. They don't get sidetracked by what others may say or think of you. Instead, they celebrate the you they've come to know. Although a true friend may encourage you to make good decisions, they trust your judgment and respect your own personal judgments. They don't become passive aggressive when they give advice you don't accept, instead, they respect boundaries and value your feelings and thoughts. They don't push you to become who they want you to be, instead, they celebrate what makes you uniquely you. They accept your personal growth and evolutions along the way because the reasons they value goes far beneath your personal style, interests, profession, marital/relationship status, etc.

They Want What's Really Best for You

A false friend might push you to change for them. They might give you the feedback you want rather than the words that will actually help you. A true friend acknowledges your feelings but at the same time points you towards a happier, healthier life. A true friend is not complacent in your personal growth, they don't passively sit by and watch you make choices that are not good for you. They want to see the happiest and healthiest version of you. The encouragement to make the choice that will get you to want in life. They learn the art of being your biggest cheerleader while holding you accountable to your goals as well.

True Friendship Doesn't Abandon You

Fairweather friends are with you when you're happy and successful. Then, when things go wrong for you, they move on to the next happy, successful person. A real friend, on the other hand, stays with you through traumas, disappointments, mental health crises, and physical illnesses. They don't abandon you just because it's easier or more comfortable to avoid you. Because a true friend truly cares about you, they actually want to be there for you during your difficult times. They care more about what you are going through more than they care about how fun you are. A friend isn't around simply for the things you have in your life, they are around for you! So when your life gets more challenging and you find yourself feeling pretty down or overwhelmed you won't have to go through these challenges alone with a true friend in your corner.

What Paul teaches us from this passage is that it’s ultimately a decision we make whether we want to be known or to stay hidden. Opening wide your heart may not always sound fun, but continually choosing not to will eventually land you in a position where you have little to no friends in your corner. Don’t let that happen!

Solution: Vulnerability. That’s what this scripture is advocating. Let people know what’s going on with you, no matter how uncomfortable it may feel. Try starting with one close friend, or a family member, and then move on to three. Go get some coffee and relax a bit. You’ll like life a lot better when you can talk about more than just the weather or traffic.

2. Everyone’s advice seems bad to you

But again the magicians of Egypt used their magic, and they, too, turned water into blood. So Pharaoh’s heart remained hard. He refused to listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had predicted. Pharaoh returned to his palace and put the whole thing out of his mind.

Exodus 7:22-23

Have you ever had multiple friends suggest to you the same thing throughout the course of a single day, and yet still find ways to convince yourself it’s a bad idea? Getting advice from friends is a fundamental principle taught in the Bible. However, it’s incredibly common  for people to ignore any kind of wisdom that could better our lives or spare us from trouble.

The Bible describes Pharaoh as having a hard heart, and that was displayed in the way he ignored Moses’ pleas to change his course of action time and time again. The consequences for ignoring this advice was devastating, and ultimately caused him his life.

Solution: Humility. This scenario is an easy mistake to avoid if you can just swallow your pride for a bit. Try catching yourself the next time you tell three friends in a row that you’re doing just fine without their opinions, and decide to listen to what they have to say.

3. You’re unable to love anyone

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold

Matthew 24:12 

I remember reaching a low point in my life a couple years back where it seemed like everyone I cared about was worse off for knowing me. The amount of damage I had done through hurtful sins was staggering for me; I was sobered by the multiple conversations with friends and family who let me know how destructive a person I had become.

This is what it’s like for someone who’s heart has grown hard because of sin. Sin separates you from God and people, and renders you incapable of loving the people most important to you. It makes you not believe that God chose you for a purpose of helping the people in your life.

If you find yourself in a position where you only seem to make people unhappy despite your best intentions, there is undoubtedly a hardness of heart that you’ve developed due to sin in your life that hasn’t been dealt with.

Solution: Honesty. 1 John 1:5-7 teaches us that when we walk in the light, we’ll have fellowship with one another. In other words, if you get all your stuff out in the open, it will endear people to you because you chose to become vulnerable.

4. You can’t get happy for anyone’s success except your own

For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

1 Corinthians 15:9-10 

Paul was an amazing person. He was arguably the most noteworthy character in the New Testament other than Jesus. He saved many lives and led countless people, and yet always considered himself unworthy of any praise or adoration. In fact, he condemned it. We could learn a lesson from him on how to not get caught up in our own ambitions.

Bitter envy makes you hate people. Instead of celebrating differences and admiring people, you spend time actively hoping people fail. If you find yourself in this position, you have something that’s hardened your heart so much that you can’t see past what you wish you had.

Solution: Admiration. Check out Philippians 2 from the Bible on how to care more about others’ success than your own. People who do this are way more likable than those who are only in it for themselves. Psalm 73 is also a good example of a heart transforming from envious to grateful/content.

5. You don’t feel anything about the stuff you should

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

Ephesians 4:17-19

This last one is probably the scariest indicator of a hard heart. This passage describes the end result of someone who keeps their heart hard, and it isn’t pretty.

Typically when we do things that violate our conscience, we feel a sense of shame or guilt, and that’s supposed to drive us back to God. However, when you lose sight of those warning indicators, that’s when you’re in trouble. You examine your life and see sin but feel nothing about it. Instead of alarm, fear or even anger, you feel nothing. Just apathy.

The aftermath of this condition is laid out in verse 19: a loss of sensitivity, surrendering to sensuality, and indulgence in all things impure. And it’s insatiable, meaning things will only get worse. This is a hard spot to come back from.

Solution: Love. Romans 12:21 says is best: “overcome evil with good.” The Bible talks a lot about repentance, because it involves actively turning away from the life we’ve been living and becoming more like God, who is love incarnate. By focusing on how to reconcile relationships and give your heart to people, you’ll reverse the course of your life and become someone who can feel again, and love the people closest to you in life. It’s a much better road, believe me.

In contemporary Judaism, redemption, refers to The Black Messiah redeeming the people of Israel from their various exiles. This includes the final redemption from the present exile.

Judaism holds that Israelites do not need personal salvation as Christians believe. Jews do not subscribe to the doctrine of original sin. Instead, they place a high value on individual morality as defined in the law of God—embodied in what Jews know as the Torah or The Law, given to Moses by God on biblical Mount Sinai.

In Judaism, salvation is closely related to the idea of redemption, a saving from the states or circumstances that destroy the value of human existence. The Most High, as the universal spirit and Creator of the World, is the source of all salvation for Israel, provided an individual honors God by observing his precepts. So redemption or salvation depends on the individual. Judaism stresses that salvation cannot be obtained through anyone else or by just invoking a deity or believing in any outside power or influence.

The Jewish concept of Messiah visualizes the return of the prophet Elijah as the harbinger of one who will redeem the world from war and suffering, leading mankind to universal brotherhood under the fatherhood of one God. The Messiah is considered to be a future divine and or supernatural being dominating human influence with an age of universal peace, characterized by the spiritual regeneration of humanity. In Judaism, salvation is open to all races with an exception of Edom; the only important consideration being that the people must observe and practice the ethical pattern of behavior as summarized in the The Laws, Statutes & Commandments. When Israelites  refer to themselves as the chosen people of God, they do not imply they have been chosen for special favors and privileges but rather they have taken it upon themselves to show to all peoples by precept and example the ethical way of life.

When examining Jewish intellectual sources throughout history, there is clearly a spectrum of opinions regarding death versus the afterlife. Possibly an over-simplification, one source says salvation can be achieved in the following manner: Live a holy and righteous life dedicated to Christ, the God of Creation. Fast, worship, and celebrate during the appropriate Feast Days. By origin and nature, Judaism is an ethnic religion. Therefore, salvation has been primarily conceived in terms of the destiny of Israel as the elect people of Yahawashi (often referred to as “the Lord”), the God of Israel.

In the biblical text of Psalms, there is a description of death, when people go into the earth or the "realm of the dead" and cannot praise God. The first reference to resurrection is collective in Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones, when all the Israelites in exile will be resurrected. There is a reference to individual resurrection in the Book of Daniel. It was not until the 2nd century BCE that there arose a belief in an afterlife, in which the dead would be resurrected and undergo divine judgment. Before that time, the individual had to be content that his posterity continued within the holy nation.

The salvation of the individual Jew was connected to the salvation of all Israel & the nations. This belief stemmed directly from the teachings of the Torah. In the Torah, God taught his people sanctification of the individual. However, he also expected them to function together (spiritually) and be accountable to one another. The concept of salvation was tied to that of restoration for Israel.

During the Second Temple Period, the Sadducees, High Priests, denied any particular existence of individuals after death because it wasn't written in the Torah, while the Pharisees, ancestors of the rabbis, affirmed both bodily resurrection and immortality of the soul, most likely based on the influence of Hellenistic ideas about body and soul and the Pharisaic belief in the Oral Torah. The Pharisees maintained that after death, the soul is connected to God until the messianic era when it is rejoined with the body in the land of Israel at the time of resurrection.

The older sections (mainly in the Book of the Watchers) of the text are estimated to date from about 300–200 BCE, and the latest part (Book of Parables) probably to 100 BCE.

If you have doubt or doubts about something, you feel uncertain about it and do not know whether it is true or possible. If you say you have no doubt about it, you mean that you are certain it is true. This raises doubts about the point of advertising.

In the Hebrew Torah, patience is referred to in several proverbs, such as "The patient man shows much good sense, but the quick-tempered man displays folly at its height" (Proverbs 14:29). "An ill-tempered man stirs up strife, but a patient man allays discord." (Proverbs 15:18), and "A patient man is better than a warrior, and he who rules his temper, than he who takes a city." (Proverbs 16:32). The emotion is also discussed in other sections, such as Ecclesiastes: "Better is the patient spirit than the lofty spirit. Do not in spirit become quickly discontented, for discontent lodges in the bosom of a fool." (Ecclesiastes 7:8-9).

Endurance (also related to sufferance, resilience, constitution, fortitude, and hardiness) is the ability of an organism to exert itself and remain active for a long period of time, as well as its ability to resist, withstand, recover from, and have immunity to trauma, wounds, or fatigue. It is usually used in aerobic or anaerobic exercise. The definition of 'long' varies according to the type of exertion – minutes for high intensity anaerobic exercise, hours or days for low intensity aerobic exercise. Training for endurance can reduce the ability to exert endurance strength unless an individual also undertakes resistance training to counteract this effect.

When a person is able to accomplish or withstand a higher amount of effort than their original capabilities their endurance is increasing which to many personnel indicates progress. In looking to improve one's endurance they may slowly increase the amount of repetitions or time spent, if higher repetitions are taken rapidly muscle strength improves while less endurance is gained. Increasing endurance has been proven to release endorphins resulting in a positive mind. The act of gaining endurance through physical activity has been shown to decrease anxiety, depression, and stress, or any chronic disease in total. Although a greater endurance can assist the cardiovascular system it does not imply that any cardiovascular disease can be guaranteed to improve. "The major metabolic consequences of the adaptations of muscle to endurance exercise are a slower utilization of muscle glycogen and blood glucose, a greater reliance on fat oxidation, and less lactate production during exercise of a given intensity."

The term stamina is sometimes used synonymously and interchangeably with endurance. In military settings, endurance is considered the ability of a force to sustain high levels of combat potential relative to its opponent over the duration of a campaign.

Endurance may also refer to an ability to persevere through a difficult situation.

FAITH means- belief, firm persuasion, assurance, firm conviction, faithfulness. Faith is confidence in what we hope for and the assurance that the lord is working, even though we cannot see it. Faith knows that no matter what the situation, in our lives or someone else's that the lord is working in it.

Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith (pi'stis) is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." This passage concerning the function of faith in relation to the covenant of God is often used as a definition of faith.

It is helpful to consider the components of faith (variously recognized and emphasized in different models of faith) as falling into three broad categories: the affective, the cognitive and the practical.

In movie industry terminology usage, a sound track is an audio recording created or used in film production or post-production. Initially, the dialogue, sound effects, and music in a film each has its own separate track (dialogue track, sound effects track, and music track), and these are mixed together to make what is called the composite track, which is heard in the film. A dubbing track is often later created when films are dubbed into another language. This is also known as an M & E track (music and effects) containing all sound elements minus dialogue which is then supplied by the foreign distributor in the native language of its territory.

Current dictionary entries for soundtrack document soundtrack as a noun, and as verb. An early attempt at popularizing the term “sound track” was printed in the magazine Photoplay in 1929. A 1992 technical dictionary entry in Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology does not distinguish between the form sound track and soundtrack.

The contraction soundtrack came into public consciousness with the advent of so-called "soundtrack albums" in the late 1940s. First conceived by movie companies as a promotional gimmick for new films, these commercially available recordings were labeled and advertised as "music from the original motion picture soundtrack", or "music from and inspired by the motion picture." These phrases were soon shortened to just "original motion picture soundtrack." More accurately, such recordings are made from a film's music track, because they usually consist of isolated music from a film, not the composite (sound) track with dialogue and sound effects.

The abbreviation OST is often used to describe the musical soundtrack on a recorded medium, such as CD, and it stands for Original Soundtrack; however, it is sometimes also used to differentiate the original music heard and recorded versus a rerecording or cover.

This term was first used by the media in 1973 when four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. The hostages defended their captors after being released and would not agree to testify in court against them. It was noted that in this case, however, the police were perceived to have acted with little care for the hostages' safety, providing an alternative reason for their unwillingness to testify. Stockholm syndrome is paradoxical because the sympathetic sentiments that captives feel towards their captors are the opposite of the fear and disdain which an onlooker might feel towards the captors.

There are four key components that characterize Stockholm syndrome:

• A hostage's development of positive feelings towards the captor
• No previous relationship between hostage and captor
• A refusal by hostages to cooperate with police forces and other government authorities (unless the captors themselves happen to be members of police forces or government authorities).
• A hostage's belief in the humanity of the captor because they cease to perceive the captor as a threat when the victim holds the same values as the aggressor

Stockholm syndrome is a "contested illness" due to doubt about the legitimacy of the condition. It has also come to describe the reactions of some abuse victims beyond the context of kidnappings or hostage-taking. Actions and attitudes similar to those suffering from Stockholm syndrome have also been found in victims of sexual abuse, human trafficking, terror, and political and religious oppression.

Psychological gratification is the usual motive for serial killing, and most serial killings involve sexual contact with the victim, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) states that the motives of serial killers can include anger, thrill-seeking, financial gain, and attention seeking. The murders may be attempted or completed in a similar fashion. The victims may have something in common, for example, demographic profile, appearance, gender or race.

Although a serial killer is a distinct classification that differs from that of a mass murderer, spree killer, or contract killer, there exists conceptual overlaps between them. Some debate exists on the specific criteria for each category, especially with regards to the distinction between spree killers and serial killers. 1 Peter 5:8 says, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour: Brothers & sisters this is the most notorious serial killer in all of history! If you are doing your best to obey the laws, statutes and commandments, the devil has you in his crosshairs, but as long as you are obeying the Lord he can't take your soul and he knows it. The question is, do you? If not! This message is tailored by the Most High for you!

Experiments typically include controls, which are designed to minimize the effects of variables other than the single independent variable. This increases the reliability of the results, often through a comparison between control measurements and the other measurements. Scientific controls are a part of the scientific method. Ideally, all variables in an experiment are controlled (accounted for by the control measurements) and none are uncontrolled. In such an experiment, if all controls work as expected, it is possible to conclude that the experiment works as intended, and that results are due to the effect of the tested variables.

Forgiveness is the intentional and voluntary process by which one who may initially feel victimized, undergoes a change in feelings and attitude regarding a given offense, and overcomes negative emotions such as resentment and vengeance.

What Helps:

3. Turn your problems over to God completely and leave them in His capable hands.
4. Come to God when you are weak and weary and rest in His arms.
5. Remember that fear is one of Satan's favorite weapons.

Yet, the human soul never exists in a vacuum. If we put off our former conduct and life of sin, we must replace it with a Christ-glorifying and Christ-centered life.

Thanks be to God, new life in Christ dispels shame and produces faithfulness and fruitfulness to God’s glory.

The Holy Spirit—who works repentance in His people—also works obedience and love in the children of God, allowing us to seek after new obedience. Living in accord with God’s will as it is revealed to us in Scripture is part of our liberty in Christ. Paul reminds the saints of their deliverance whereby they are set at liberty by Christ:

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:18-21)

Repentance is not something we do only at conversion; it is the ongoing process of recognizing, confessing, and forsaking our sin (1 John 1:8-9). What is more, ongoing repentance produces ongoing obedience. As we repent, we forsake a life of sin. In Christ we have true liberty from sin and true liberty to live for God, by virtue of the Holy Spirit’s regenerating work, whereby we are given a new nature to seek after Him, to please Him, and to abide in Christ. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Galatians 5:22-24).

Ronnie Long, wearing a dark three-piece suit, red tie and a hat, walked out of prison, wheeling his few belongings behind him. He raised his hands to the crowd and threw his arms around a loved one before addressing reporters.

"It's been a long road," Long said. "But it's over with. It's over with now."

Wearing a mask that said "Free Ronnie Long," he credited his advocates and loved ones for persevering through the long legal battle.

Long, now 64, was accused of raping a White woman. An all-White jury found him guilty of rape and burglary in 1976 and him sentenced to life in prison.

His conviction was vacated Thursday after the state of North Carolina filed a motion in federal court seeking to do so.

Since Long was convicted, "a trickle of post-trial disclosures has unearthed a troubling and striking pattern of deliberate police suppression of material evidence," US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Stephanie Thacker wrote.

That evidence, which included semen samples and fingerprints from the crime scene that did not match Long, was deliberately withheld by law enforcement, Thacker said in the filing.

"Because of the deceit that occurred at trial, Ronnie and his counsel at the time didn't have the benefit of that evidence to present to the jury," Long's attorney, Jamie Lau, a law professor at Duke University and a faculty adviser for the Duke Law Innocence Project, told CNN. "So he's been wrongly incarcerated for 44 years."

The withholding of evidence meant that Long was already facing an unfair trial, Lau said. But the racial dynamics at the time also worked against him.

Long was accused of raping a 54-year old White woman in Concord, North Carolina, on April 25, 1976. She reported that a perpetrator attacked her in her home, assaulted her and fled, according to the court filing.

About two weeks later, officers asked her to come to the courtroom and observe people who were there for other cases to see if anyone resembled her assailant, the court filing said. She ended up identifying Long, who was there on a trespassing charge, according to the filing. (The trespassing charge ended up being dismissed.)

The case was tried by an all-White jury. Every witness for the prosecution was White, while every witness for the defense was Black, Lau said.

"The cards were heavily stacked against him and a large part of that was the racial dynamics in North Carolina in the South, and in particular Concord, North Carolina, in 1976," Lau said.

Federal judges echoed that sentiment in the court filing.

"Mr. Long, a Black man, was tried in 'small town' 1970s North Carolina by an all white jury for the rape of the white widow of a prominent local business executive," Judge James Wynn of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals wrote.

Civil rights leaders and local officials cheered Long's release, with North Carolina NAACP president Rev. Anthony Spearman calling it "the epitome of injustice."

"It is no secret that I am elated that justice has finally decided the matter of Ronnie Long," he tweeted.

"Ronnie Long suffered through 44 years of injustice," Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said. "I can't imagine the strength he and his loved ones needed to endure it."

Long maintained his innocence and had been fighting for his freedom for years.

Wednesday's ruling does not declare Long innocent. The federal court left that question up to a lower court to decide.

Though the charges have yet to be dismissed, Lau said he's confident they will be.

"There's literally no evidence of Ronnie's responsibility for this crime," he said.

In the meantime, Long is a free man.

For his first meal out of prison, he told reporters he wanted macaroni and cheese, beef ribs, a salad and some lemonade.

Since his release, Long has been overjoyed at finally being able to reunite with loved ones, Lau said. But weighing heavily on his mind is that his mother didn't live to see this day.

It had long been her wish to see her son as a free man. She died just about six weeks before Long was released, Lau said. Her last words: "Is Ronnie home yet?"

Isaiah 42:22-25 says, "But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none saith, restore.

23. Who among you will give ear to this? Who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

This makes you want to fixate on what you once had but now do not. Even if you can't help but feel like you 'lost' something, remember that loss (and pain) often leads to learning, growth and the ability to persevere. Here is a healthy way to look at sacrifice: sacrifice often determines your level of success in life.

Along with countries including Canada and Uruguay, 33 US states have legalized cannabis for medical use. Eleven also allow recreational use. And evidence is accumulating to support the use of specific cannabis compounds, especially cannabidiol (CBD), for a variety of health conditions, including seizures and inflammation.

But a look at what happens when the use of cannabis becomes more widespread suggests that the drug can also have downsides, including acute injuries and illnesses. In 2000, Colorado legalized medical marijuana. Further policy changes in 2009 made the substance easier to get hold of, and between 2008 and 2014, licences for medical marijuana in the state increased from less than 5,000 to more than 100,000. In 2012, the state also legalized recreational use, and shops began selling cannabis products in 2014.

As cannabis has lost its stigma in Colorado, Monte’s research shows that the need for health care for cannabis-related reasons has risen. Between 2012 and 2014, cannabis-related visits to emergency departments at a group of Colorado hospitals increased by around 40%, from 824 per 100,000 visits to 1,146 per 100,000. Many of those visits were related to mental illnesses, which were diagnosed five times more frequently in people who had used cannabis than in those who hadn’t.

Colorado hospitals have also seen a growing number of cases of marijuana use leading to cyclic vomiting syndrome, a condition characterized by vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Occurrences of this condition doubled at two Denver hospitals after the liberalization of medical cannabis. Burns are another risk. In a 2015 analysis, Monte’s group found that the University of Colorado burns centre admitted 29 people for marijuana-related burns between 2009 and 2014, compared with no burns cases before the policy changed. Most were incurred during the process of extracting the plant’s main psychoactive ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), for making butane hash oil.

Cannabis is also causing more of other types of accident than it used to. From 2009 to 2015, Children’s Hospital of Colorado in Aurora saw 81 children under 10 years of age who had been accidentally poisoned by cannabis, and the state’s poison-control centre dealt with 163 cases of children in the same age group, with a mean age of about 2. The rate of marijuana-related visits to the children’s hospital nearly doubled from 1.2 per 100,000 people two years before legalization to 2.3 per 100,000 two years after legalization. The number of cases at the poison-control centre increased by 34% per year during the study period, far outpacing a 19% annual increase in the rest of the country.

Studies with driving simulators suggest that cannabis also raises the risk of car accidents, although those data are harder to quantify because cannabis lingers in the bloodstream, and drivers in collisions might have more than one drug in their system.

Adverse outcomes do not seem to be abating in the state, even after years of legalization. Between 2012 and 2016 (the latest data available), there were nearly 10,000 cannabis-related visits to the University of Colorado Health Emergency Department. Reasons included psychiatric, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal symptoms. Edible products accounted for about 10% of visits, even though, in 2016, they made up just 0.3% of THC sales in the state.

“There are risks, absolutely,” Monte says. “And we need to be open and transparent about what those risks are with patients.”

Some of the negative health effects of cannabis could be long-lasting, particularly for heavy users and young people. Increasing evidence points specifically to the risks of THC. When cannabis is ingested or inhaled, THC binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, leading to changes in mood, memory, appetite and perception of pain, among other effects.

In heavy users, those effects might linger even after the intoxication has ended. Studies vary in the definition of ‘heavy’ use, but the term generally refers to people who use cannabis at least three times a week, often every day and usually for years. That kind of regular use has been associated with lower scores on tests of memory, attention, planning and decision-making, says Nadia Solowij, a brain researcher at the University of Wollongong in Australia and co-director of the Australian Centre for Cannabinoid Clinical and Research Excellence in Callaghan. In a 2016 review of 105 studies, Solowij and colleagues found that, after 12 to 24 hours of abstinence, heavy users performed worse than non-users and less-frequent users on tasks that assessed verbal learning and memory.
