On today's episode we talk with Capt. Justin Leake of Panama City Inshore out of Panama City Beach, FL. and he gives a report on the inshore fishing before Ian started blowing. It sounds epic and I am noticing a trend about the fishing before these named storms. From now until the end of November the fishing will be fantastic, just be sure to avoid fishing during cold fronts and tropical weather events but the fishing before and after can be off the charts! Expect normal fall patterns otherwise, the fishing should be great!

So as any good steward of the environment might wonder, why can't you just keep those fish? Brant talks to the FWC and gets an answer.

It has turned on in a big way along the beach so grab your surf gear & sand flea rake and get after it if your heading to Pensacola this week!

There are also an abundance of Mangrove Snapper being caught on inshore structure and the really big ones hold on offshore structure. The offshore and nearshore bite has been strong as well. Triggerfish are in season and this time of year you might also find a King Mackerel patrolling the wrecks. It is a great time of year to fish the Pensacola area!

He tells us about the rain that has moved through the area in recent weeks and has made for significant challenges if you're fishing inshore. Not only the water clarity and temperature are effected but most importantly the salinity. When the salinity drops quickly the fish shut down and usually find cleaner, saltier water. That being said, anything on the gulf side is your best bet and with the area's multiple piers and beach access' you should still be able to wet a line if your land locked. Boats should plan to head out to chase the cobia and king's that are prevalent on offshore & nearshore wrecks right now.

There's no shortage of Red Snapper but you might also find Mahi oriented to floating structure or the occasional King Mackerel. There is plenty of action to be had this time of year. The late summer patterns are just getting going & it is a great time to head out. Like Brant mentioned, surf fishing is really tough right now so one of the most effective ways to get on the fish if you don't have boat access, is to take advantage of one of the local piers or hire a local charter captain to head offshore. Either way, there's a lot of fish to target right now!

It is a great time to look for them around Destin not only because of the gin clear water but tarpon don't seem to mind when it gets hot. In fact they seem to enjoy it, the hotter and calmer the water, the better. Thats when you will see them roll on the surface too, to supplement the low oxygen levels found in warm, calm water. Or maybe they're just happier when it's still and quiet, either way, this is the time to look for them around Destin!

We also talk about the change in the number of tides per day that take place in that area. You might wonder, why spend so much time talking about tidal movement? The reality is that in the dog days of summer (and apparently most of June this year), the moving water does more than give predatory fish an ambush opportunity. It actually cools and oxygenates the water, that gives the fish more energy to feed and kind of gets them going. Late summer is the time to understand how the tides effect your favorite fishery & your ability to catch fish there.

We also talk about a few recent client trips & talk about conservation of speckled trout. This is the time of year they move onto the flats to spawn. The important thing to remember is to release the bigger females that are more than likely full of eggs. A couple of rules to note, the female trout are always the big gators that everyone is after. That makes it really important to quickly release them after some measurements and a pic or two. Secondly, the males make grunting sounds when brought to hand, those are the ones you want to keep.

Plan to get into plenty of out of season Red Snapper & Triggerfish as well. There might also be a king or sailfish hanging around too, so don't forget to put out a free-lined live bait. Inshore, Capt. Lionel tells us about a recent trip where a neap tide, a full moon and an East Wind really shut the fish down. On the plus side, that should make for some great fishing in a few days or so once things get back to normal and the water quality improves. This is all dependent on the rainfall amounts but assuming it doesn't rain t=in the foreseeable future, things should continue to stabilize.

He tells us about all of the recent rain they have had and brings us up to speed on the current water conditions and water quality. Spoiler alert, it's not great. Fishing inshore and nearshore has been very challenging and you have to run 20+ miles offshore to find clean, blue water. This summer has brought a tremendous amount of rain to the FL Panhandle & the salinity changes they are experiencing in Pensacola right now is having a negative effect on the bite. That's the funny thing about publishing a fishing report podcast, sometimes the "real life" fishing report is that it isn't a good time to fish an area, unfortunately, this is one of those reports for Pensacola. On a positive note, if the salinity gets corrected and we have a few weeks of no rain, it will clear up and should make for fantastic fall fishing!

He tells us about a fantastic mangrove snapper fishery inshore this time of year and he shares how he targets them. If you don't feel like running a few miles out, we also talk about where to find exceptionally big Spanish mackerel and how Justin targets them. This is not the typical redfish, tarpon episode. Sometimes conditions dictate that your best chance of success is to target a completely different species and maybe use a method that you haven't tried before. Hopefully, this will give you guys some ideas of things to look for and try if "normal" conditions won't allow you to target your desired species. This is the kind of podcast that can turn a bad day of fishing into an epic one, you just have to be willing to change some things up and adapt. Just another reason to get out there and wet a line!

The good news is that you can apply this information to most of the areas that you fish around the state of FL, especially in the other fisheries that make up the FL Panhandle. The fishing is good but the water is dirty and that has created a scenario where the only pattern is that there isn't really a pattern, at least inshore. Everything is reacting randomly to the influx of fresh water the area has had lately. Offshore, things are a bit brighter as there is some clean water to be found and the fish seem to be cooperating. Fall is right around the corner and the fish are acting accordingly.

On today's episode we talk with Brant Peacher of AnglerUp with Brant out of Pensacola, FL. He gives us some info on the local impact of Cat 4 Hurricane Ida that made landfall in Louisiana yesterday evening. We also talk about the positive things that can happen in the gulf both before and especially after a storm of this size passes close to the area. It sounds like we are moving into somewhat of a fall pattern but right now the influx of fresh water into the bay system has the water pretty dirty, so things will need to clear up a bit before the fish cooperate. Mangrove snapper inshore along with redfish, big Jacks & Spanish on the beach were all on fire before Ida showed up. Now we will just have to see how the fishery was impacted and adjust accordingly. Stay aware if you decide to fish by boat after the storm, debris can be hard to see in the water, even days after the weather has cleared.
