I had the pleasure of talking with actor and actor career coach Talia Thiesfield and these are some of my takeaways. Pivots are both internal and external and can be big or small but either way trust your own path. Next, once you’ve learned how to learn the lesson in a pivot you can then carry over lessons from pivot to pivot and set boundaries. You don’t have to go back to something that you pivoted to before just because you find yourself needing to change again. Set your boundaries. Last but not least, be in gratitude as much as you can. Pivoting is expanding and look at it this way you survived the last pivot you made and you're here for another pivot to happen.

Talia is a full-time actor, voiceover artist, and talent & career coach. She currently appears as recurring character NYPD Rep Maya on FBI (CBS), and has guest starred on various television shows including Succession & Veep (HBO), Limitless & Kevin Can Wait (CBS), and Suspscion (Apple TV+). I am also an alum of the NBC Diversity Showcase. She stars in the award-winning film Inez & Doug & Kira, wherein she played the title role of Kira opposite Michael Chernus and Tawny Cypress. Additionally, her voice can be heard in multiple vocal modalities for various commercials, video games, and animated projects including a three-season run as “B” in DreamWork’s Trollstopia.

A lover of new works, She has originated and helped develop a number of roles for Off Broadway and regional houses. These include the world premieres of Ring Twice For Miranda at NY City Center off-Broadway (Anouk), How To Break at Seattle's renowned Village Theater (Dr. Aden), Windfall at Bay Street Theater directed by Jason Alexander (Jaqueline Vanderbilt), and Cleopatra: The Pop Experience at Theater for the New City (Cleopatra). She is currently nominated for a Heilman & Haver Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical (How To Break at Village Theater). Previously, she received a Broadway World Regional Award for my performance as Daniela in In The Heights (Dallas Theater Center) and I am a Connecticut Critics Circle nominee, having earned a nod for Best Actress in a Musical for my portrayal of Aldonza in Man of La Mancha (Ivoryton Theater).

As a coach, educator, and consultant she’s been a guest lecturer at Columbia University, Rutgers University (Mason Gross School of the Arts), Montclair State University, The University of Connecticut, The No Marking Society (founded by Kate Lumpkin, CSA), and The Broadway Collective. She is the founder of The Act of Style Coaching which has gained wide popularity and the respect and collaboration of industry professionals nationwide on Instagram. She uses her own trademarked method to provide acting, branding, and career coaching that combines business savvy with craft in empowering actors to feel more confidence, pride, and authenticity in their work.

As an author of three books, Micah reflects on the slow processing of emotional experiences, the importance of recognizing personal artistic processes, and dealing with vulnerabilities and impostor syndrome. Together we explore themes of artistic resilience, accepting and making space for emotions, and the beauty in the unconventional paths of artistry. My takeaways from this episode are to jump before you can overthink because I sometimes deal with analysis paralysis and to try and find peace in every pivot because you deserve it.

This episode is the finale of Season 6. Yes it’s a wrap on season 6 and what a joy it has been. This season the podcast reached the milestone of 100 episodes and received its first award. I am over the moon to announce that the podcast has been awarded the Bronze and Listener’s Choice 2024 Signal awards in the Artists and Designers Shaping Culture Category! Cheers to more seasons and more awards.

Now on today’s show you are in for a real treat because you have two Jersey girls, with Caribbean mothers, and theater backgrounds on the microphone. It was such a pleasure to sit down with none other than actorprenuer Lori Tishfield, who now resides in Toronto. We discuss how important it is to maintain a sense of self beyond your professional identity and sitting in a place of balance between internal validation and the need for external affirmation from the industry. We touch upon overcoming self doubt and societal conditioning so you can own your confidence and move through your career, business and life with agency. Reminiscing on how the regalness of the black actresses we grow up on and their mere presence was empowering and unapologetic, teaching us we are expensive. Our thoughts, feelings, and contributions to this world especially as black women are expensive and we should act accordingly. We dissect how rejection is protection, the need to sometimes pull the receipts from past experiences to remember things that have worked out before and not forcing doors shut before their time. This episode boils down to trusting your intuition as your compass, understanding that your path is uniquely yours, and pivoting with grace so you can see where the journey takes you.

Lori Tishfield is an Actorpreneur simultaneously based in Brooklyn and Toronto. Lori’s most recent live performances have been as a featured vocalist in André De Shields’ concert series and in her recent and first solo show, Audra on a Budget, at Green Room 42. On television, Lori can also be found in Orange is the New Black and FBI: Most Wanted. Aside from the arts, Lori is the Founder of Natural Talent, an experiential staffing agency exclusively staffing actors in brand ambassador work. In the last 9 years, Natural Talent has partnered with over 300 brands and provided “survival jobs” for over 500 actors nationwide. This Fall, Lori has stepped in as the national facilitator of the Creative Entrepreneurship Project for the Entertainment Community Fund, educating artists nationwide on how to start their own businesses.

Kate shares her journey from a busy freelance cellist in Boston to making the brave decision to pivot her career towards coaching and entrepreneurship. We discuss the importance of setting aside personal time, even amidst the hustle, and how creative problem-solving can be boosted by shifting from a "no because" to a "yes if" mindset. We'll also touch on the challenges and emotions surrounding career pivots, the value of self-care, and the necessity of adaptability in the arts. A graduate of the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, and a New World Symphony fellow, Kate has performed in the world’s top concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein, Concertgebouw, and London’s Barbican and Royal Albert Halls. She has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor, and was a member of the Grammy-award-winning group Boston Modern Orchestra Project for 20 years. She has worked with contemporary artists Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Josh Groban, and Peter Gabriel and can be heard on over 75 recordings, including her award-winning 2016 release, The French Cello.

Having pivoted into the online coaching space in 2019, she now helps other creatives expand their artistic vision and roles through her 9-month coaching program, The Creatives Leadership Academy as well as in 1:1 client work. She is the writer and host of the Podcast, Tales from The Lane, and was a contributing author to the 2023 best-selling book Business on Purpose. While she still occasionally performs as a cellist, she has taken up her baton again as Music Director of the Bermuda Philharmonic. She has been working this year to complete the manuscript for her first full-length book, Beyond Potential–due out in March of 2025. She lives with her husband Paul and their menagerie of cats, dogs, lizards, and tree frogs on the beautiful island of Bermuda.

From the conversation I had with Artist and Creative strategist Lennon Bone these are may takeaways. First embrace discomfort. There is a reason you are uncomfortable and can you see it as a sign that you're on the right path or will you continue to collect negative leaning evidence in your head to keep you in your comfort zone? Second, hindsight is 20/20 but discovering your own personal and professional through line my ad in not having to look back all the time. Finally, success is figuring out how to get out of your own way and finding joy in what you're doing.

Ep 515 - Jillian Paige: DON'T FORCE FINDING YOUR GROOVE

I had the pleasure of talking with teaching artist Jillian Paige and these are some of my takeaways. First, learn how to pace yourself on this artistic journey. There will be ebbs and flows and being able to handle them with grace will help you because a full artistic life is gonna involve pivots and changes. Next, find comfort in knowing you did the thing you set out to do, celebrate that achievement, and then move onto the next thing without any regrets because you did it. Finally, don't force finding your groove. It’s hard not to put pressure on yourself or your new venture to succeed but letting it blossom while you sustain yourself financially in another way may actually help the process.

Jillian Paige is the Founder of Meisner in Music, the premier class to infuse the Meisner technique with singing. Jillian received her master’s in music theatre from Oklahoma City University, her bachelor’s in classical vocal performance from Belmont University, and studied Meisner under Terry Martin (a direct pupil of Meisner’s), and Ted Wold. Jillian is based out of New York City and has performed with companies such as Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Nashville Opera, and Kentucky Opera. She is passionate about helping singers maintain beautiful singing while achieving emotional freedom and impulsivity in the moment.

From the conversation I had with actress, voiceover artist, and coach Simone Serra these are my takeaways. Expectations are a funny thing. If we can come into more experiences in our life without expectations we make space to receive and have the freedom to try what comes. Next, Success is an ever changing landscape and it encompasses both your personal and professional life. It's ok to ask yourself, what does it mean to me to be successful and questioning whether your own limiting beliefs are getting in the way of your definition. And finally where focus goes energy flows so where are you focusing?

Simone is Voiceover Artist and Coach who has cultivated a successful Voiceover career over the last five years, having her voice streamed on all media platforms from Spotify to TikTok. With an extensive resume of working with clients from The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Nutella, Dominos and Ulta Beauty, she attributes her accomplishments and success to the many years she dedicated to her education and training. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Studies at Montclair State University, followed by completing a two-year conservatory training at the Maggie Flanigan Studio, which specializes in the Meisner Technique. Soon she will add adjunct professor to her resume and begin teaching a Beginner Voiceover Workshop at Tisch Drama School this fall. Her pivot into the Voiceover world and the following successes have given her the confidence to reverse course and begin to pursue acting on stage and film again.

I had the pleasure of talking with actor, director, and producer Faith Boles and these are some of the takeaways from our conversation. First complacency can ruin your career, if you find yourself being nudged to make a change you probably should, second, if you do have fear about doing something new or different, ask yourself how can I transmute that fear into positive motivating energy and what is something positive that can happen if you do it, and last we sometimes can project finality on to pivoting or changing and that can be very limiting to our creativity.

Originally from Savannah, GA, Faith Boles is an Orlando FL based actor, director and producer that has been in the theater industry for the past 20 years. She has been a recipient of 2022 Orlando Critics Pick for Best Actor, Broadway World awards and nominations, as well as the ASCAP Irving Berlin Scholarship. Faith can be seen on stage at various performance venues at Walt Disney World and theaters in the Orlando area. However, she mainly works "behind the table" creating/directing projects and shows as a director and producer for New Generation Theatrical - a theater production company in downtown Orlando.

Speaking with author, actor, and artist Andrew Norlen led me to these takeaways. First, people tend to see you before you see yourself. They can see your talents and greatness before you do, and it can be hard to believe them when they tell you, but once you do believe you can put yourself out into the world. Second, don’t judge yourself too hard on your journey, give yourself grace and trust that the dots will eventually be connected. And finally more for me does not mean less for you, more means I get to experience a different version of myself that is taking up the space I was meant to.

Andrew has performed for audiences all over the world and on tour across the United States with the Broadway hit Kinky Boots! Originally from Troutdale, Oregon, Andrew is a New York City-based artist, with his BFA from The Boston Conservatory of Music with an emphasis in dance and directing. Andrew is the author and creator behind When the Lights Are Bright Again: letters and images of loss, hope and resilience. A book of pandemic testimonials from the Broadway and theater community worldwide, published in 2021 by Applause Books. Andrew is a proud, queer man who strives to normalize the power in authentic vulnerability. His upcoming memoir—Finding Brave, is fueled by his deep desire to champion young adults and teens to build tools, live their truth out loud, and not apologize for who they are. He travels around the country with "Resilience: the workshop"—to inspire, coach, train, amplify, educate, teach, open up to, level with, demystify and empower the next generation of youth to learn to foster their own trademark to their success and longevity—in both career and this crazy, but beautiful thing called life.

Here are some takeaways from the conversation I had with actor, singer, and cabaret artist Sierra White. First, sometimes we need a hard reset, and a reset doesn’t mean you are failing, it means you are being led to a new part of yourself and career. Next, do not diminish your accomplishments by letting imposter syndrome say you aren’t capable, and last we have to actively remind ourselves not to say no to the gifts afforded to us.

Sierra was born, raised, and is still based in the greatest city in the world, Chicago, IL. Their favorite things to do when they were little was to tell stories, dress up, and sing. The fact that they managed to make that into a career makes the little kid in then over the moon everyday.

Susan Hensel has a career that spans over 50 years and she is currently a Textile sculptor. The conversation we had led me to these takeaways. First, life is not going to present itself to you the way you thought it would but can learn how to persevere. Next, sometimes we are the last ones to admit we need a change and those around us are waiting for us to catch up to what they already know. Third, focusing on the process rather than the outcome can help you get and stay excited about discovering new things about yourself, your art, and life.

Susan Hensel is a textile sculptor known for her artists books and her innovative fiber sculpture. Hensel's artwork is known and collected nationwide, represented in collections as disparate as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Duke University Special Collections.

Ep 508 - Olithea Anglin: IT'S CALLED GROWTH

I talked to the creative human known as Olithea Anglin and I wanted to share some takeaways from our conversation. First up, there are so many ways to feel artistically full, so don’t pigeonhole yourself to one thing, and give yourself grace when you’ve grown out of something that used to fill you artistically but doesn’t anymore. Second, learning how to give yourself permission sooner so that your next artistic move doesn’t come out of frustration, but comes from a space of following your intuition. Third, sometimes you gotta break the rules. Learn the rules so you can break them, within reason of course, but creatively break the rules.

Fresh from her Carnegie Hall Debut with the world renowned Burnt Sugar Arkestra, Miss Olithea is a native New Yorker that has been singing since the age of three. By the age of 18 years old, She has performed at every major concert hall in NYC. She attended The Hartt School and received her BFA in musical theater. Olithea is grateful for the opportunity she has had to perform in various theater productions all over the country. After the passing of her father, Olithea changed gears and decided to start writing her own music. She has come out with 2 EP’s Long Day’s Journey (2016) and To Be Seen And Heard (2017). Since those releases, Olithea has deepened her practice in meditation and experimental music. With the use of vocal loops, fx, and sound bowls she channels spirit that calms the heart, and eases the mind. Here are some takeaways from the conversation I had with Shaness Kemp who happens to be a performing artist, choreographer, and dance educator. The first takeaway is you need time to replenish. Now this looks different for all of us but it’s important to replenish so you can continue to pour out as an artist. Next, versatility is the key to flexibility. If you are versatile it’s easier to be flexible and follow the road that unfolds in front of you. And third, that once you let go of the fear of not understanding, or looking silly, or being uncomfortable you will realize how much you can actually do.

Shaness D. Kemp Kemp is a native of Nassau, Bahamas and holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from Temple University. She is an Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and continues to work as a freelance dancer, choreographer and dance educator. As Master Teacher of the Umfundalai technique, she has taught at various institutions, festivals and intensives, both nationally and internationally. Kemp has trained and performed with several notable artists and professional dance companies, including Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, Kariamu & Company: Traditions, Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, Eleone Dance Theatre, Philadanco! The Philadelphia Dance Company, Urban Bush Women, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Rennie Harris Puremovement, The Katherine Dunham Seminar and The American Dance Festival to name a few. Most recently, she has appeared as a guest performing artist with Tabanka African and Caribbean Peoples Dance Ensemble in Oslo, Norway. Tabanka is Northern Europe's largest all black dance ensemble. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally.

From the conversation that I had with Darlene Hope, who is an actress, I have some takeaways I wanted to share. First, it’s all about your staying power. Being in the arts, especially as an actor is a marathon. Developing the skills and coping mechanisms you need to run the marathon is essential. Second, when running this marathon, allow life to guide you, stay flexible, and ask yourself if this step supports the next one I want to take. Third, there are levels to this thing. Don't be afraid to start at the ground level in a new artistic medium or career choice.

As a classically trained actress, Darlene Hope’s professional acting career has included leading and supporting roles Off Broadway and in regional theaters around the country, solo jazz vocal performances, commercial, film and television appearances, and voice-over campaigns. Miss Hope has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with and being directed & music directed by many of the most notable performers working today, including many Tony Award nominees and winners.

Miss Hope has appeared in numerous award-winning commercial, print and new media campaigns. Perhaps the best known of these is her performance as the title character in A Visit From Aunt Flo, a viral video that has received nearly 3 million views worldwide on YouTube, Facebook, Youku, etc, and was officially recognized at the Cannes Lion Festival of Creativity. In the last year, she has worked on and performed in 5 world premiere & regional premiere plays and musicals, a revival classic American play, and Guest Starred on the network television series The Blacklist and Blue Bloods. Not to mention numerous staged readings, developmental labs, teaching artist residencies, workshops, and media interviews.

Most recently, Darlene Hope has launched HopeFull Productions, a creative launching pad of diverse and inclusive content for Film, New Media, Theatre, Music, and Publication. Since its inception, HopeFull Productions has produced or is in development on 2 full-length plays, a full-length screenplay, a streaming series, numerous music recordings, and has published an online journal for women.

From the conversation that I had with Julio Agustin, who is a Theatrical consultant and entrepreneur, I have some key takeaways I wanted to share. First, resisting change and things shifting often makes your experience during the change or shift worse. Do your best to release control and let the change happen. On the flip side we all reserve the right to change our mind. If you want to change or shift, do it. You have a right too, it’s your choice. Finally, let all your creativity out. Live the biggest fullest life you can, and let your creativity lead the way!

Julio Agustin is an associate professor and director of Music Theatre at Elon University. He has performed in six Broadway shows (Chicago, Fosse, Steel Pier, others). As a director-choreographer, he has been nominated for such awards as the Audelco Award, Best Director (Sweet Charity @ New Haarlem Arts Theatre, NYC); Syracuse Area Live Theatre, Best Choreographer (In the Heights @ Hangar Theatre); and Houston Press, Best Choreographer (Guys and Dolls @ Theatre Under the Stars). He has written the book and lyrics to two musicals and is the author of The Professional Actor’s Handbook: From Casting Call to Curtain Call and also “Navigating the Musical Theatre Industry for Latinx Actors” in the upcoming Latinx Actor Training published by Routledge.

1.Stop downplaying the skills you have learned through the arts. Meaning if you’re an artist who is looking to pivot or have a parallel career in something artistic or not, stand on the skills you’ve learned as an artist. Don’t negate them!

2. Money is a neutral tool, we are the ones who ascribe an emotion to it and for a lot of artists that emotion is fear, but we can choose to ascribe another emotion to it or no emotion at all.

3. Give yourself permission. Permission to take chances, permission to be good with money, permission to build the life you want as an artist.

These are my key take aways from my conversation with Singer, Financial Educator & Advisor Tiffany Soricelli.

Tiffany Soricelli is an award-winning financial advisor and the owner of Virtuoso Asset Management LLC, the first Registered Investment Advisory firm in the country dedicated to serving Artists and Supporters of the Arts through financial planning and asset management services. She is also the founder and CEO of Virtuoso Advising for Artists, a company dedicated to coaching and educating artists about the business and financial aspects of building a thriving career in the arts.

As a sought-after national speaker, Tiffany currently serves as the business & financial coach to emerging artists at The Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Minnesota Opera, and San Francisco Opera. During the summer, she works with artists at Wolf Trap Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Seagle Music Colony, the Mostly Modern Festival and regularly serves as a speaker for national organizations including Opera America, The Recording Academy, and Chamber Music America. She has led educational seminars for New World Symphony, LA Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Atlanta Opera and several prestigious music conservatories across the country.

Prior to her financial career, Tiffany earned her BM and MM from SUNY Potsdam's Crane school of Music. She lives in upstate New York outside of Saratoga Springs, NY with her husband and two children.

Johnathan Lee Iverson, the Ringmaster & Chairman of the Board for Omnium: A Bold New Circus, is an accomplished and history making showman who has been privileged to grace the most coveted stages and arenas, the world over. As a member of The Boys Choir Of Harlem, he shared the spotlight with them likes of LL Cool J, Spike Lee, Lena Horne, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Luciano Pavarotti, Roberta Flack, Placido Domingo, Tony Bennett and scores of other luminaries in the world of entertainment. He's kept company with statesmen such as the late South African President Nelson Mandela, Secretary of State, General Colin Powell and four US Presidents, including

Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and William Jefferson Clinton. The youngest and first Black Ringmaster of the iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, which he served until its closing in 2017 making him the last ringmaster in the 146 year history of The Greatest Show On Earth, is renowned for his "powerful voice” and “superstar" presence, as well as, being deemed one of Barbara Walters 10 Most Fascinating People, but he is most proud of appearing as a question on JEOPARDY® twice. Shenea Stiletto is a former Two-Time World Champion AcrobaticGymnast , USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame Member, Survivor of USA Gymnastics, and a World Class Circus Handbalancer inducted into the World Acrobatic Hall of Fame, who has been for nearly two decades performing with elite entertainment companies worldwide including Cirque Du Soleil. Shenea’s career highlights have included becoming the first ever African American woman to perform a lead character and acrobatic role in a Cirque Du Soleil production, in which she performed in Varekai as The Promise character. Shenea Stiletto is also a circus trainer, educator, circus advocate for the American Circus Alliance, and dual circus podcast host for the Pro Series Think Like An Acrobat produced by CircusTalk.com, and her own podcast Live Like An Acrobat where she explores Circuspreneurship and the competitive High Performance Athletic Arenas.

David currently teaches at HB Studio in New York City and frequently does workshops for Entertainment Community Fund, MusiCares Foundation, and The SAG-AFTRA Foundation. He danced for Mimi Garrard Dance Theatre, Lucinda Childs, Rachel Lampert and Anna Sokolow among others and his choreography has been performed at such venues as Lincoln Center, La Mama, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, New York Fringe Festival, Soho Rep, and Ensemble Studio Theatre. David is also a consulting director for Prime Clerk, specializing in US and international restructurings.

Shirine Babb is an award winning artist who is passionate and committed to diversity, creativity, and professionalism. In addition to more than 20 years of acting experience, Shirine has a BFA in musical theatre, a MA from East 15 Acting Conservatory in London and MFA from USD/The Old Globe in classical theater. Shirine supports students by serving as an Instructor at New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and mentor to aspiring actors and artists.

Shirine is an AEA and SAG/AFTRA union actress, who can be seen in theatrical productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Regionally. Notable Broadway plays include Harry Potter: The Cursed Child and Lincoln Center’s production of Macbeth with Ethan Hawk. She is currently in Merchant of Venice, a coproduction between Theatre For A New Audience and Shakespeare Theatre Company. Her on screen appearances include national commercials and popular shows such as Iron Fist, Blue Bloods, and Madam Secretary. Shirine’s accolades include the Helen Hayes Award, Critics Circle Award nomination, Theater Circle Award nomination, and the ADELCO Award nomination.

On this episode I am joined by Actor, Producer, Teaching Artist, Writer, and Strategist Davon Williams. Two-Time Anthem Award winner, Davon Williams is an International performer, the Director of Communications for Black Theatre Coalition, and a TED Talk alum. He is committed to using his talents to bring about substantive social change within his industry. As a performing artist, he has appeared in several national/international commercials, worked on TV/film projects as a member of SAG-AFTRA, and is an award-winning stage actor who has been featured throughout America and Asia. He has served as a ghostwriter for several politicians, aided in the Occupy Hong Kong movement, and wrote for leaders of the Freddie Gray uprising. His podcast “The Receipts w/ Davon Williams”, became a viral sensation that led to major policy changes within the industry along with the creation and passing of the landmark legislation - the Black Theatre Matters Bill.

Ep 411-Renée Jackson: ENJOY THIS SEASON

On this episode I am joined by Singer, Actor, Streamer, and now vlogger Renée Jackson. Born and raised in sunny Tampa, Florida, Renée grew up listening to her father play records. Influenced by Pop, Soul and R&B divas such as Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson, Renée found her gift of song. Her growing interest in all things music, would earn her a spot in the prestigious musical theatre program at Blake High School of the Performing Arts. During her senior year, she had the opportunity to audition for Pippin. It wasn’t until she landed her first lead role as “Leading Player” that her journey with musical theater would be sealed.

Jackson later went on to study musical theater at Ball State University (B.F.A.), where she was able to hone her craft and expand on the fundamentals of singing, acting, and dancing.

Post collegiate training, Jackson took to the stage for several theme parks, cruise liners, and theaters both regional and international. After landing the role of Felicia Farrell in Memphis, Renée acquired a membership with Actor’s Equity. These opportunities helped shape and mold her into the professional she is today.

Now a NYC-based actress, Ms. Jackson resides in Union City, New Jersey. When she’s not on stage, she can be found serving up life chats across social media as a live-streamer and blogger. Her down-time is filled with fitness, podcast, home-decor, dance, and natural hair care. She enjoys planning, personal development books, traveling abroad, and spicy foods.

She has also been on tour with The Book of Mormon and Aladdin, played The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol at Hanover Theater, BJ in Smokey Joe’s Café at Stages St. Louis, and Marta in Company at Playhouse on Park.

As a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, she has performed on stages across the United States and internationally, commercials, film and voiceover work. She loves creating and producing work with her soul tribe that inspires and heals. With over 20 years of experience as an educator and creator of theatre/dance programs for both children and adults in underserved communities throughout New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans, she brings this same dedication and passion to the work that she continues to do as an Intuitive Healer, Professional Performing Artist, Certified Life Coach, Teaching Artist and Entrepreneur. Her mission is to embody and create safe spaces for womxn of color to discover, heal and inspire in order to be the fullest expression of themselves and reveal their true voices to the world.

On this episode I am wrapping up Season 3! I want to say thank you to all my guests for sharing their journey’s and pivots. This season I have taken away many lessons but my top 3 would be to live a full life as a person outside of my craft, that rest is revolutionary, and I always have a choice. I hope that you have picked up some gems of wisdom this season too! There will be a Season 4 of The Artist Pivot podcast that will launch in early 2022. For now I would like to leave you with what I call a podcast audio blooper reel. You know how sometimes TV and film will show you behind the scene outtakes or blooper reels, well I have created one for this season of the podcast. Walter Kemp Jr, a fitness artist and influencer, who at 250 lbs dedicated his life to mental, physical, and spiritual growth was able to lose over 100 lbs with consistency and discipline. He continues his quest to inspire and inform those who struggle with the same negative effects obesity had on him. Walter can be seen at OBÉ fitness, which is a live stream and on-demand fitness community, as well as featured in SHAPE, Vogue, and Forbes Magazine giving advice on wellness. Walter has also had the opportunity to offer some of his booty building tips to the cast of Good Day New York. Some of his favorite partnerships include CB2, EnVogue, and Amazon Live. Currently Walter is developing his own fitness methods with a focus on building generational wellness for family ingestion. We discuss merging his passions for fitness and performing, not settling until you find what makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning, and being present for your journey.

She is a Miami , FL native but working in theatre has taken her all around the United States. She is the owner and creator of City Rolls, an egg roll business that takes imaginative food combinations that create flavor packed experiences in every bite. She has also authored 4 children’s books that will soon be available in audio and print. As her mother would say to her, she is just a little black girl with a lot of big dreams. We discuss maturing out of the show must go on mentally, how she wants to use her voice both figuratively and literally to create new avenues and lanes for young black girls, and that having talent it just the icing on the cake, we also need to take care of all the other things God has given us.

She is from Miramar, Florida and the CEO of The Candy Girls Gourmet Sweets. Sarah grew up singing in church which opened the door to her being a lead singer in the entertainment group A. Randolph and The Smash Room Project and her award winning performance of Effie White in Dreamgirls. Her love of baking came after her sister taught her how to make a red velvet cake. She began to bake and sell red velvet cupcakes and cookies, so her sister suggested she turn it into a business, which she did! She creates different flavors based on Candy, hence the name The Candy Girls Gourmet Sweets and she is among Miami’s favorite cupcakes. We discuss her parallel careers, how she’s using all your gifts which helps her follow her purpose and that your support system needs to be as strong as you are.

On this episode I am joined by spoken word artist, host, entrepreneur, and mentor JRose. She was born and raised in Queens and her love of hip hop inspired her to start writing poetry. After 20 years of writing and 7 years of performing on stages all over NYC, JRose decided she wanted to build a safe space for other creatives to share their work, so in 2018 she founded the creative platform The Rose Garden Events. JRose has expanded to curating and hosting performance based events such as monthly open mic nights, showcases, fundraisers, small business expos and more. In 2020 her creative journey led JRose to media production and journalism. She launched her first talk show “The JRose Experience”, where she brings an intimate look into the creative process of poetry, music, art and entrepreneurship from the perspective of Poets. What started out as a New York City based talk show quickly evolved into a country wide project that is now a traveling talk show. Additionally she facilitates spoken word workshops to teach children and young adults how to use poetry as a voice for their communities. We discuss her journey from page to stage as a spoken word artist, how she discovered her own power and that she didn’t come to play with nobody.

On this episode I am joined by Singer/Songwriter and performing artist Lea Anderson. Born in Washington DC, raised in South Carolina now residing in New York, Lea’s goal is to conquer the music industry note after note. Categorized as R&B SOUL, it is without a doubt that Lea Anderson has what the music industry has been waiting for. Through her own rhythm and blues, Lea aims to create an intimate connection between herself and anyone who has come in contact with her fluid soprano sound. Versatile, she can be acoustic, with a piano, supplemented with tracks, or with her four piece band. No matter the set up, Lea is always equipped with a flute, which was handed down by her Mother. Lea is a member of Actors Equity Association, and some of her favorite past performances include HAIR, Little Shop of Horrors, Ragtime and Smokey Joe's Cafe. Now a staple of New York’s live music scene, Lea has played venues from The Apollo, Rockwood Music Hall, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre, The Duplex, Duane Park, as well as the Make Music NYC just to name a few. In March 2019, Lea independently released her first album entitled (Pronounced Lee Deluxe). Her LP was recorded and mastered by Grammy nominated and recipient of 16 Billboard Awards, D-Moet. Lea is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, INC. We discuss how growing up in the 90’s taught us we can do anything, taking this time during a pandemic to heal through the arts, and how artists should take their heads out of the sand and live full lives outside of their craft.

He is an Apollo Talent Search Winner, Philadelphia Tap Idol, and Substitute Executioner for the Apollo Theater’s Historic Amateur Night Competition. Brian began as a street performer with a dream, but with the support of his mother, Angela Davis, Brian earned the money he needed with nothing but a board, a bucket, and second-hand tap shoes. Tap Dancing helped pay his way through college at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he won the Award for Outstanding Performance in Tap Dancing. He went on to New York City to star in "Rhythm is Our Business'' and the inaugural cast of Broadway's "After Midnight'' on board the Norwegian Escape. Brian is now the proud owner of the Taptastic Network LLC. We discuss how pivoting has been and will always be Brian’s favorite word and action, how there is no time like the present and how important it is to share your light with the world.

Additionally, J Nycole is an executive producer on the American Black Film Festival feature film selection, Lola, the first African-American female boxing movie, starring Taja V. Simpson. During the pandemic, J Nycole became a certified life coach and theta healer, and her mission is to carry out the legacy of entertaining while empowering and educating- a legacy left to her by her mother and grandparents to whom she gives thanks and honor, for without them, she would not be the woman she is today. Michael is one of the founding members of Musical Theatre Factory, currently in residency with Playwrights Horizons, and was awarded the first ever MTF Builder Award. During CoVid-19, Michael has stayed active in the theatre community by serving as Director of Photography and producing virtual events such as Moments in the Woods (A Virtual Gala for the HFWAA featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, which was nominated for a BroadwayWorld Award), Betsy Wolfe’s A Pants Optional Holiday, and It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play featuring The Skivvies with Laguna Playhouse, and Leslie Kritzer’s Holiday Show for The Actors’ Home. He’s an active participant with Covenant House and in 2020, Michael served as the KeyNote speaker for Florida Thespians.He currently has two podcasts out: Dear Multi-Hyphenate and My Broadway Memory with the Broadway Podcast Network. On this episode I am joined by performing artist and International Wellness Mentor & Advocate, Ceasar F. Barajas. Becoming a Wellness Mentor & Advocate came to be as he still presently copes and manages his own diagnosed anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress, and found his calling as an educator and supporter to mental health awareness causes. As a trauma-sensitive Certified Yoga Instructor, Meditation Teacher, and Breathing Techniques Instructor, he specializes in mindful resiliency for trauma recovery and compassion fatigue, and has taught all over the world. He’s served as a guest panelist & speaker at Rutgers and Fordham Universities, numerous corporate events, podcasts, and is an adjunct professor at Columbia University, teaching Meditation/Mindfulness for their Teachers College Summer Principals Academy. As a 7-year U.S. Navy Veteran, he also works with the Veterans Yoga Project as an Ambassador and Master Teacher, with experience supporting recovery and resilience of Veterans, many of which experience post-traumatic stress, trauma-related challenges, and other mental health issues. He not only serves the Veteran community, but active duty armed forces members, their spouses, and community at large. Ceasar also provides group yoga, fitness & meditation classes, and personal coaching and advisement, both in person, and online, to an international community of individuals via multiple apps and his website, www.TheJourneyWithCeasar.com And in his spare time, Ceasar is also an award-winning singer, dancer, actor, fight and dance choreographer, musical theater talent, and voiceover artist. We discuss how yoga and meditation is available to all, pandemic or no pandemic, the agency for artists to learn that worthiness doesn’t equate busyness, and how we must find a way with our art to stand up for ourselves, stand up against harassment of the black and brown communities and just be good humans.

In the last 5 years, Ned has produced 7 total albums of music, 2 seasons of an award-winning rock musical web series, 4 original podcasts (and co-produced a 5th for Radiotopia), and a plethora of music videos and live music series. In addition to his life as a content creator, Ned holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Ithaca College and has spent the majority of his career performing on stages all over the USA and on screens in nationally and internationally syndicated Films and TV Programming. We discuss how traumatic things in his life forced him to pivot, how these involuntary pivots were actually setting him up for future success in our current landscape, and that even if you're not currently an actor you are still a creator.

On this episode I am joined by the multi-hyphenated Sharrod Williams. He grew up in Newark, New Jersey the middle child of Kevin and Pamela. A Capricorn in all the best ways, Sharrod is a dreamer, go-getter, and natural born leader. He graduated cum laude from Montclair State University with a dual major in Communication Studies and Dance. After discovering a desire to perform in college, his path led him to appear On-Stage and Screen. With some credits including Hamilton: An American Musical (Chicago Cast), and both Tuck Everlasting and CATS on Broadway. Most recently, he has ventured into screenwriting and producing. We talk about how Sharrod, executive produced, created, wrote, cast, and starred in his own web series called NEIGHBORS. A series that amplifies people of color and the queer experience; how Sharrod believes his super power is connecting with people and about His favorite quote, “Life’s too short to live the same day twice”.

Ep 207-Lisa B. Lewis: The (Virtual) Circus is back in town!

On this episode I am joined by founder and executive director of Omnium Circus Lisa Lewis. Lisa began her career with Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus. She earned a Masters Degree in Clown/Circus History from NYU. During the same period, she co-founded the Super Scientific Circus. A scientific, technology, engineering, arts, and math, also known as STEAM based series of 6 shows, which toured the country using Circus Skills to make science accessible for all learning styles. Simultaneously, she joined the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit and inspired by the efforts to serve new audiences, Lisa became project coordinator for Circus of the Senses. A performance adapted for blind, visually impaired, Deaf, hard of hearing and those with cognitive challenges. Lisa doubled the reach of the program and seeing a need in the community, she spear-headed the Embracing Autism performances. We discuss the many hats she has worn in her life long career in the circus and how she was able to produce an all virtual circus which the New York Times called “genuinely extraordinary”.

Ep 206-Ryan Bancroft: Back in Focus

On this episode I am joined by conductor Ryan Bancroft. He is originally from Los Angeles, California and is currently the principal conductor with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He studied trumpet at the California Institute of the Arts and received his Masters of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. According to the Pool Alumni Magazine of Cal Arts The Malko prize is akin to the Grammy Award for Best new artist or being named NBA rookie of the year, and Ryan won this award! In 2018 he won both First Prize and Audience Prize at the prestigious Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen, Denmark and the rest is history. We discuss how music entered his life, his voluntary pivot from trumpet player to conductor, and how the involuntary life halt that was brought on by the pandemic has turned into a necessary time to help him find his balance.

On this episode I am joined by actor, voiceover artist, and teacher Tommy Coleman. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Tommy's love of acting took him to Philadelphia, Scotland, London, back to Virginia and eventually New York. He holds a B.A in Theatre from Temple University and a M.A in Musical Theatre Performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He's been in an Emmy nominated documentary on PBS and can be seen along with an Emmy-Winner in American Dreamer starring Jim Gaffigan. Currently you can hear his voice as Danny Humbles in Fuser, a video game where you control the music, as well as Popeye's latest commercial promoting their Rip'n Chicken combo. As of January 2021, he joined the faculty of Winthrop University as an adjunct professor teaching college students auditions techniques, and adjusted the curriculum to fit a pandemic landscape.

She has been acting since she was 14 and has always come back to her love of theatre. When she's not with her camera, she's either watching delightfully bad movies with her husband or following a recipe for a delicious cocktail. We discuss her choice to pivot from full time actress to full time photographer, having an open mind to develop a hobby that can sustain you and feed your sense of worth, and how artists need to honor their boundaries.

On this season 1 finale episode I am joined by The Real Housewives of After Midnight 3.0, which include Brenda Braxton, Leandra Ellis-Gaston, Asha-Brownie Gordon, Krystal Mackie, Iman Ayana Barnes, and Bria Williams. I had the pleasure of working with these beautiful ladies in the show After Midnight on the Norwegian Escape.

So here is a little bit about each one:

Ms. Brenda Braxton is an author, singer, dancer, Tony-nominated actress and native New Yorker. She originated the role of Brenda in Smokey Joe's Cafe and did double duty for some time running BBraxton’s, a grooming salon for gentlemen, while in Chicago on Broadway.

Mrs. Leandra Ellis-Gaston is an actress who hails from Columbia, South Carolina and now resides in New York City with her husband. She has toured with Beautiful:The Carole King Musical and made her broadway debut last year in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

Ms. Asha Brownie-Gordon is a singer, actress, and occasional waitress/barista who is originally from Conyers, Georgia. She has worked at theme parks, on cruise ships, and in regional theatre for the last decade.

Ms. Krystal Mackie is Brooklyn born and bred and is a dancer, singer, and teaching artist. She is an Alumni of LaGuardia High School and received her BFA from University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She made her Off-Broadway Debut in This Ain’t No Disco and is currently in the 1st National Tour of Hamilton.

Ms Iman Ayana Barnes is a performing artist rooted in dance and fitness. Starting in concert dance, she eventually crossed into the world of Musical Theatre doing productions of After Midnight, Oklahoma, and The Music Man. Dancing has always been her outlet of expression, joy, and fulfillment and finding these emotions in any performance opportunity is one of her main goals. She has now also started her own Youtube fitness channel.

Ms Bria Williams is a dancer who hails from Baltimore, Maryland. She made her Broadway debut in Mean Girls and was the principal Duval Understudy. She also has a passion for interior design and has been finding ways to use those skills as well.

We discuss sisterhood, taking off the mask, and discovering who we really are when everything is stripped away.

On this episode I am joined by independent filmmaker and writer Alex Costello. He is based in Los Angeles and has been an avid movie fan since he was a kid. Alex went to film school and has worked for 10 years for a nationally syndicated news show, all while continuing to try to find his ideal place in Hollywood. He's produced and created a variety of short films, attempted to make a feature-length documentary about an aspiring hip-hop artist, and is now honing his craft in writing TV dramas. We discuss how breaking his arm led him to writing the script for his first short; how everything starts with listening; and how pivoting is not a failure, it’s just life.

Progressive Theater is a nonprofit theater company which aims to tell culturally enriched stories that empower the misrepresented and people of color, while captivating all audiences with the focus being the change we want to see. He recently produced a film adaptation of THE GOSPEL AT COLONUS amidst COVID, with a mission to create more opportunities for actors, filmmakers, photographers, and anyone who falls under the umbrella of artist. We discuss how producing theatre for him has been a humbling experience; how he’s the ideas guy and is always proud to pivot boldly; and since you, me, we are still alive, so is our part of the industry.

On this episode, I am joined by singer and actress Yvette Monique Clark. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and started her career a little later in life. She was the mother of a nine year old son when she decided to change her life. With no formal training, some talent, faith, and determination she set out to follow her dreams. After many survival jobs, singing in clubs around Manhattan and dabbling in a couple of gospel plays, a little birdie told her about an audition for the non-equity tour of HAIRSPRAY. She booked it and shall we say the rest is history. She has been fortunate to have worked in film and television, on stages regionally, nationally, and internationally. Some of her most notable stage shows are; GUN and POWDER (Sissy), AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' (Nell), SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE (BJ), THE WIZ (Aunt Em, Evillene, and Glinda), HAIRSPRAY (Motormouth Maybelle) and ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (Regina). We discuss how her biggest pivot was making the decision to become an artist; how her cabaret Diva of the ‘Demic is helping her hold onto her passion in this time; and that true change will come to our industry when representation is across the board, not just on stage or in front of the camera, but on technical crews too.

Traveling and seeking out unique foods drives her adventurous side and this year she was awarded the “Scotch Ambassador of the Year 2020” by Whisky Magazine. We discuss how her transition from the arts into whiskey wasn't intentional but proved to be the right path; how she doesn’t ever want to use her talent for something she doesn’t believe in; and that she wants to change the face of whiskey and the perception of who should enjoy it.

She is from North Carolina, lived in New York City for sometime, and moved to London when the opportunity presented itself. She was in the Original Broadway casts of Aladdin and Something Rotten. Appeared as Effie White in Dreamgirls on the West End and also originated the role of Becky in Waitress on the West End. She is signed to Universal Decca Records and is now set to release her new album entitled TOMORROW on Nov 27th. We discuss how her first pivot of having vocal surgery before college actually set her on the path she was supposed to be on; how redirection may come in the costume of failure but you have to trust your journey; and how once diversity becomes common place and not a trend, black artist especially black women artists will be seen for all they really are.

On this episode I am joined by aerialist and dancer Chance Hill. He has a BFA from Southeast Missouri State University and is a former dancer with the Chicago Repertory Ballet. He has also been a Dancer/Acrobat for Streb: Extreme Action Dance Company and a Dancer/Aerialist/Vocalist for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. We discuss how he made a pivot from Dentistry to Dance in college, how early on in his career he felt fulfilled, and that no one should feel like they are turning their back on the arts by finding a job in a different industry right now.

She was in Motown: The Musical both on Broadway and the National Tour, and has been on The Lion King National Tour for almost 3 years. Martina is also the founder and owner of The Heart Mission, which is a 501c3 community service-based organization designed by artists of the Broadway community to give back to the community through acts of service. We discuss how volunteering with Broadway Serves gave her the opportunity to change her perspective to abundance, the inner work we all have time to do now, and how knowing our value will inform how we return to the entertainment industry.
