Kurtis Gabriel (@kurtisgabriel_) is a former NHL player who was selected 81st overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild and went on to play at the NHL level with the Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, and Chicago Blackhawks. Known for his toughness, fighting, and on-ice presence, Gabriel carved out his professional career by embracing one of hockey’s most demanding roles.

In this episode, Kurtis gave us nearly two hours of his time to walk through his entire playing career, sharing raw and mind-blowing stories of adversity, his favourite moments in the game, and the teammates who meant the most to him. We also dive deep into mental health, Kurtis’ own personal battles, and how a new outlook on life has led to meaningful change off the ice.

This week, Owen and Joe were lucky enough to chat with Merrimack Hockey Senior Defenseman Matthew Campbell. Matthew played at BWC and for the NW Hawks before moving on to Junior and cementing his status as a Coquitlam Express legend. He then committed to Quinnipiac and won a National Championship as a freshman before transferring and playing two years at Michigan Tech. He got to attend the Philadelphia Flyers development camp, and is currently trying to carve a path to the Pros as his college career comes towards its end at Merrimack. He delves into growing up and developing in Mission, BC, and the love he has for his community and Mission Minor Hockey, before explaining how he ended up playing for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and eventually the BCHL's Chilliwack Chiefs. After a strong first 2 seasons in Chilliwack, Abram committed to the University of North Dakota and was selected in the 7th Round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by Vegas. He was then named captain of Chilliwack for his final year and was over a point per game as a defenseman. He was also named to the BCHL First All-Star team and BCHL Defenseman of the Year. After a solid first year of D1 Hockey, Abram took off this season and was one of North Dakota's 3 Hobey Baker Nominees. Abram's humble character and joyful personality are second to none, and it makes this interview even better, capping it off with some crazy and funny stories at the end. His career was cut short due to injuries, and he quickly found a passion for coaching. Bronson now head coaches the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds BCEHL U15 AAA team, and runs Sharp Hockey Skills, an elite skill development program for some of the top Junior to NHL players from British Columbia (Zach Benson, Gage Goncalves, Noah Juulsen, and many more).
