Southern Illinois is pretty boring, that is until you get to Metropolis, you know the hometown of Superman! I mean, of course Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White. It takes me back, “who’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound?” “Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!”

Let’s take the leap to Metropolis, IL to visit the incredible Super Museum in search of Truth, Justice and the American Way!

Up, Up and Away!

Ft Scott was one of the forts built in 1842 on a no so straight line between Minnesota and Louisiana to help resettle Native Americans. As time passed these forts were essential in protecting settlers along trails heading west and outfitted expeditions, keeping the peace in the expanding US.

What Ft Scott and Ft Leavenworth, KS didn’t count on was trying to keep the peace and give sanctuary during the viscous Border War.

We are off to Ft Scott, KS to hear the whole history of this important installation, join us!

Lawrence Massacre

As the Civil War showed no signs of slowing down neither was the tension between Jayhawkers and Bushwackers.

After raiding parties from both Kansas and Missouri devastated towns and murdered civilians on both sides the largest atrocity was being planned.

Captain William Quantrill at dawn on August 21, 1863 would attack the Jayhawk stronghold of Lawrence, Kansas bringing his 300 plus mounted riders to avenge past Jim Lane lead raids.

At the end of that day much of Lawrence had been destroyed with 150 men and boys murdered.

This inhuman act would trigger another unheard of act, the issuance by the Union Army of the expulsion Order # 11.

Let us go to the Watkins Museum on Massachusetts Street in Lawrence Kansas to learn about the raid, the aftermath and how the town and people survived.

Osceola Massacre

March is Massacre Month!

First up is Osceola, where on September 23, 1861 US Senator and murderer James Lang lead his Jayhawker mob in destroying the 3rd largest city in Missouri plundering, murdering and torching Osceola Missouri to the ground. This wasn’t the first town Lane and his band plundered but it was the most devastating.

As Lane and his drunken men left the city 17 lay dead with 9 summarily executed after a Drumhead Trial. Slaves freed, huge amounts of product confiscated, wagons of personal items stolen and 800 building burnt to ashes leaving only 3.

Osceola never recovered.

Revenge would be had in less than a year as Captain William C. Quantrill and his Bushwackers ravaged several other towns in Kansas but on August 21, 1862 initiated their famous raid on Lawrence Kansas, murdering 150 unarmed men and boys.

Let us go now to Osceola first and then Lawrence on March 15th to discuss how Americans could undertake these horrific acts on fellow Americans.

First up is the Nicholas-Beazley Aviation Museum in Marshall Missouri. Russell Nicholas and Howard Beazley returned from WW I with only an idea. They took that idea and turned it into an aviation company that built, trained pilots and sold airplanes in the dawn of the aviation era. Their story is professionally displayed in this hands on museum for all ages just 10 miles north of I-70.
History of St. Joseph Part 1

Today I'm staying home in St. Joseph, Missouri. Going to the Remington Center, a wonderful museum on the Missouri River, combining natural resources and history unique to the area.

St. Joseph played a major role in the development of the West. Several trails and hundreds of thousands of travelers set off from St. Joseph to all parts West. If your family has lineage in the western part of the United States, chances are you can trace your ancestry to that person or family that set off from this area. They would've risked it all and provided you with the base you and your family enjoy today.

This city is where you could get on a train in New York, ride to St. Joseph, sign on for a wagon train, and head off for a new life. Join us in Part #1: The History of St Joseph Missouri, where the South came North and the East headed West. Enjoy!

Winston Churchill

In the annals of military history it can be said that no man was better suited for the times, place and situation than what faced Britons Sir Winston Churchill during World War ll.

Churchill successfully lead his county and the world against an axis evil that threatened democracy and Christian civilization.

At the invitation of President Truman seeing what was developing in post World War ll Europe, Churchill came to Fulton Missouri and predicted the future struggles of the world by delivering his Iron Curtain speech.

From the Westminster College campus this county has relocated, stone by stone, and rebuilt a Sir Christopher Wren 17th century London chapel to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill and that speech.

We will travel to America’s National Churchill Museum and talk to the Director about the man whom we all owe so much.

Order Number 11 - Bates County Missouri

As the Border War between Kansas and Missouri raged during the Civil War. Union General Thomas Ewing Jr issued famed Order # 11, days after the city of Lawrence Kansas was raided and 150 unarmed men and boys were murdered by Missouri Bushwhackers. The Order basically demanded all people in Jackson, Cass, Bates and Northern Vernon Counties in Missouri to evacuate their residences in 15 days. After 15 days the Union army moved in and destroyed by fire all dwellings that could aid the enemy leaving only chimney stacks on the horizon as far as one could see. This incredible act was a scorched earth policy never used before in US history against ones own countryman creating an area to be know as the Burnt District. We discuss the Order its affects and the aftermath.
