The Mostly Good Podcast

Welcome to the mostly good podcast - my name is Nick Jones and I'll be your host. I created this podcast because I kept meeting people who said they were afraid of speaking their minds to family and friends. They were afraid they would be judged. So I thought, wouldn't it be great to have a podcast where we celebrated each others weirdness? Where we aren't afraid to discuss things, even if it make us uncomfortable. Throughout each episode, I will be interviewing people I find interesting, are experts in a given field, or I have learned a great deal from. I'll share personal stories and I commit to being open and honest with you - no pretending. We're going to talk about everything - no topic is off limits. Life is short my little weirdo's. Like the name of this podcast, life is mostly good even if the circumstances around us aren't. Without further ado, please enjoy the podcast that is mostly good.

But here's the good news—I'm committed to learning how to become more skillful at this. It's truly my desire to create content that: encourages growth, shares resources to support said growth, helps celebrate our weirdness, reminds you that you aren't alone, and entertains.
Cultural Imposter Syndrome w/ Jen Lawson

HELL YEAH. It feels good to be back at it again (with the white vans). I married into the family of todays guest and she happens to also be a Vice Principal at a High School in my area. Of course we talked about our usual childhood dynamics and weird things we did, but we also dove into a discussion about imposter syndrome. More specifically, how Jen experiences this as a woman who is half white and half Hispanic (specifically Mexican). We also talked about barriers in the educational system, a teacher who made an impact in my life (shoutout to Mrs. Saltares), and how mindset matters. Do y'all even read these? Let's see. First person to comment on the instagram post for the episode today with the codeword "I would like to buy a hamburger please" gets $5. I'll Venmo you. On God.

This isn't going to be a raunchy episode, fingers crossed for the future. Today we talk about sex, intimacy, trauma, and answer some questions you sent in via instagram. We zoom in on the topic of how early & past experiences can prevent us from enjoying sex now as adults. For some, this could be religious or sexual trauma that has caused the disconnection. For others, it could be porn. For a topic that so many are interested in, we seem to not talk about it often in America. The entertainment industry uses sex to sell things on tv, but we aren't supposed to talk about it like mature adults in our real lives. Today we change that. </itunes:summary>

"Why Has Every Man Found Porn In The Woods?" - with Tattoo Artist Jimmy Butcher

Today's guest is kind of a big deal. He owns an incredible tattoo studio in town called The Butcher Tattoo and honestly, there's not a lot he can't do. He can paint, draw, design, and create mixed medium art. He's tattooed the likes of Portugal. The Man and created custom sneakers for Will Smith and Ed Lover, no big deal. Really, head over to Will Smith's instagram (April 2018). We start off talking about his childhood, how he was picked on and jumped for simply being different. Stitches were involved. On top of that, he shares two freaking funny stories about the woods and his childhood weirdness. We eventually dive into how Jimmy became a tattoo artist, creativity, and his values as an artist. Want more? Fine. He also answers some questions you guys sent in, the importance of being kind, and what he wants to be known for.

<itunes:summary>Today's guest is kind of a big deal. </itunes:summary>

So a peaceful gay woman who happens to be vegan joins the military and decides to buy an airstream, save people from hearing loss, and travel the world. It sounds like a punchline to an old school joke, but what you read is anything but a joke. Our guest today is all of those things and more. What? That description isn't good enough for you? So needy. We also talk about how sometimes people can spend too much time managing perceptions rather than living or being their authentic selves. We share stories about our mutual diagnosis of anxiety, what we like about ourselves, and what we hope the future holds for us. She also has her very own podcast entitled, "But You Don't Look Sick" and she's a pretty fantastic Editorial Stylist (she knows her sh*t). And today she's sharing her story with us. We talk about her diagnosis of breast cancer, what led up to that moment, how it could have been caught sooner, and the aftermath that ensued. This eventually led to her starting her own clean beauty shop online and creating her own skincare oil that my wife and I swear by. I was obviously there for this conversation and I can tell you that while editing this episode, I was on the edge of my seat. Get comfortable and settle in, as you listen to another fantastic episode of The Mostly Good Podcast. </itunes:summary>

Meet Daniel - Daniel seemed to be your standard Christian man living in the south. He was leading worship every week, attending Bible studies, and eventually he had a fiancée who was just as committed to the church. But he had a secret...a secret that he was told to repress. What was his secret? The truth that Daniel was forced to hide was that he was and is a gay man. Flash forward and now he is married to the love of his life and he can proudly be who he has always been. <itunes:summary>Today we are weaving a fantastic web of conversation with my friend, Charlotte. Charlotte grew up in New York and eventually found her way to Savannah, Georgia. She lost her mother when she was a child due to alcoholism, but over the years she's found connection with her through the stories she's learned about her. We also talk about the many hats we wear professionally, Charlotte giving herself permission to drink alcohol, and she also shares a story about art, pearls, and a butthole (yes, all in one). I open up a little bit about a not-so-great dating experience in high school (not her fault but her families) and my second grade teacher calling me stupid. We also discuss how it's important to own your piece of the pie when it comes to relationships and how I would hypothetically process being cheated on. Cheers to another episode and a great weekend for you!</itunes:summary>

For starters, todays guest has a massive social media following (269k to be exact on Instagram and around 400k on TikTok) and she's a SCAD film alumni. On top of that, this episode is a much shorter one than usual, so I'm sure you'll enjoy getting some of your time back. In this episode, Vas talks about growing up on a monastery in Greece (GREECE, Y'ALL), she tells the story of when she knew she was gay (her word not mine), coming out to the nuns at the monastery, and finding acceptance and love with herself. And if that wasn't enough, we talk about how labels may help people feel like they have a community to belong to, but that those same labels may also box people in and force people to behave or act a certain way. Good God you're gonna love this episode and you're gonna love Vas. </itunes:summary>

In the spirit of authenticity...and in saying what I'm about to say, I run the risk of you not listening to this episode, but please keep reading. In hindsight, I wish I had dug in deeper to Alexandra's story. I think she was vulnerable and shared part of her story and that we just scratched the surface of it in our conversation. After every episode, I always try to find ways of identifying better questions I could have asked. I think what we talk about is still valuable! We didn't just babble about nothing. There's some truth in here. I just wish I was able to slow down enough to listen better and see windows of opportunity to dig deeper. I think you're going to enjoy our conversation and in all likelihood, I'm just being too hard on myself (anxiety man here). Thank you so much for listening and I hope these conversations help!

<itunes:summary>HOT DAMN! I absolutely love this episode. We start off a little silly but settle in on Alexandra's story. She shares how she bought into the American dream of having shiny things, a comfy corporate career, and the debt that comes along with the lifestyle. This pursuit led to what she describes as a mental breakdown. She quit her job, leaned into yoga and therapy, and found the balance she needed. We also dive into the topics of black lives matter, political correctness, and the shit-show of content we see in our facebook newsfeeds. </itunes:summary>

In this first episode, I dive into what's happening here in the United States in regards to racism and white privilege. More specifically, why white people (I am also white) have such a hard time admitting that white privilege and racism exist. Time is up - with the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, more and more people are waking up to the reality that people of color are not being treated fairly or equally the way they deserve. People of color have the same rights as white people, but it's clear those rights are just words on paper. I'm diving in and I'm not holding back. It's time to say it loud and say it proud, BLACK LIVES MATTER. </itunes:summary>

First off - I have to thank Christine for being so vulnerable and sharing her story. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to deal with, process, and share what she has been through. It's our hope that by sharing this difficult conversation, it will empower those who have had similar experiences and bring awareness to those who have not. There will be moments where we make light of certain situations - this isn't to say that either of us don't take this seriously. Sometimes you have to find the humor in the chaos to keep afloat. By no means do we think that schizophrenia or any other mental illness is funny. As someone who has Generalized Anxiety Disorder / Panic Attacks, I can tell you first hand how unfunny it is. But again, humor is often times the best medicine and it's how I choose to process through things. I hope our conversation inspires you to dialogue with the people in your life and to ask the hard questions.

With love,

The Mostly Good Podcast

<itunes:summary>I could not be more excited to introduce you to this super talented photographer (who just so happens to be my wife). In this episode, we discuss the weird things we thought and did as children...I'm convinced we're all a little messed up. We also talk about her career change leaving a very popular branding agency called Focus Lab and her new life as a freelance photographer in the midst of quarantine - what a time to switch things up. And if that's not enough, we also unpacked the topics of aging, body image, kindness, and why I'm worried about dying (the answer isn't what you would think). Sit back and buckle up for this incredible conversation with the lovely and talented, @heyitslaurenjones</itunes:summary>
