This Week in Michigan Football History 11/29/2025

This week in Michigan football history with the Professor, Greg Dooley. Good morning and Go Blue! Today, we renew the greatest rivalry in sports as once again, your Wolverines take on the Buckeyes, this time back home in Ann Arbor. Over our 146 years of football excellence, Michigan has had different teams we call our number one rival. But on this day, exactly 131 years ago, we met a brand new one, Amos Alonzo Stagg's Chicago Maroons. We won that game after discovering, get this, that Stagg had been stealing our signals.
This Week in Michigan Football History with the Professor, Greg Dooley. To all the Michigan fans tuning in from coast to coast, to the shores of Lake Michigan, to the banks of Lake Erie, welcome to your history lesson and a special salute to those who braved the journey to the Windy City to witness today's epic clash at historic Wrigley Field. This isn't our first rodeo in Chicago, of course, the first Michigan football game ever, back in 1879, was held in Chicago on the site where Grant Park sits today. And we frequently used to throw down just 12 miles from Wrigley in Hyde Park, squaring off against our old rival, the University of Chicago, under their legendary coach, Amos 'Alonzo' Stagg.
This Week in Michigan Football History 11/01/2025

This week in Michigan football history with the professor, Greg Dooley. Well, good evening, friends, family, and Maize and Blue fedora wearing die-hards. Here is your history lesson heading into tonight's Showdown with the Boilermakers. We begin all the way back on this day in 1902, when Fielding hurry up Yost was in year two of his point a minute Dynasty after a Flawless 1901 season, racking up more points than anyone anyone had ever witnessed and shutting out every opponent, he still had a point to prove. He had yet to clash with Wisconsin and the Badgers had claimed the first two Western Conference titles and matched Michigan's undefeated run to share the crown in 1901. So now in 1902, Yost finally got his shot at our friends from Madison and it was a colossal showdown, hailed as the grandest game in Western football history. The stage was perfect, a neutral battle Soldier Field in Chicago, packed with a record shattering 22,000 fans, a new standard for a crowd at a conference game.
This week in Michigan football history with the professor Greg Dooley. Ahead of this thrilling battle for Paul Bunyan, let's flashback 50 years to October 25, 1975, when the Big House roared as the Indiana Hoosiers rolled into town. Even our beloved host Ira Weintraub, a mere one day old, could sense that these Bloomington boys stood no chance against his would be mighty Wolverines. Michigan had dominated a few teams like they've owned Indiana, dropping just three games to the Hoosiers since 1968, a legacy of maze and blue supremacy. This clash would be no different and showcased two coaches etched in history for wildly different reasons. On the west sideline stood General Glenn E. George Patton Schembechler in his seventh season at Michigan, already a coaching legend, and he had his Wolverines perennially in a national and conference title hunt. On the east sideline was Lee Corso, now beloved for his Mascot head wearing ESPN College GameDay antics since 1987. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

This week in Michigan football history with the Professor Greg Dooley. Michigan's 2023 national title run is etched in our hearts with memories where we'll live for decades. But that season wasn't without heart stopping moments when it felt like everything could slip away. One such day was November 18, 2023 in College Park, Maryland. The Wolverines eeked out a 31-24 win over the Terps for program victory number 1000. If you know, you know our championship dreams hung in the balance that day.

So why do I bring this up? Because Michigan faced another similar gut check during the 1997 championship run. Brace yourself folks for two words, Tim Dwight. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

This Week in Michigan Football History - USC 10/11/2025

In 1901, Michigan faced a crisis due to a long forgotten foe, the University of Chicago, founded in 1890 with an ambitious plan to rival Ivy League schools in the Windy City. They knew having a football squad was key to their vision, and I mean big time football. To compete with the dominant Wolverines from Ann Arbor, they H. Stagg, a coaching pioneer. And by 1900, the Maroons had turned the tables and began beating the Blue in the matchup. In this fierce rivalry desperate for a turnaround, Ann Arbor rolled the dice on an outsider, a fiery West Virginian named Fielding H. Yost. When Yost stormed onto campus and took the coaching reins, college football and Michigan would never be the same. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

I had to make an appearance here. And yes, we are right above the garage here. We are a criminal defense law firm. Nothing but criminal defense matters from misdemeanor game day offenses up to all serious felonies, primarily in Washington County. You can find us at themichigandefenders.com. I made a little quick joke about human evolution and the two big theories there, one being intelligent design. And I think we are seeing that the Michigan evolution this season, even through only four games, is evidencing intelligent design of modifying some things we're doing on our schemes toward our personnel, particularly on offense, especially having to adjust. And each week the evolution continues. I think there's going to be even a bigger step today. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

It was that year that we welcomed Glenn Edwards Schembecher Jr. Soon to be known to fans in Ann Arbor and nationwide as simply BO. On this day, exactly 56 years ago, a young, untested coach with a weird last name and Buckeye roots stepped onto the Michigan sideline for the first time.
This Week in Michigan Football History - 9/13/2025

1980 was a special year in Michigan football history and perhaps one that hopeful Wolverine fans might appreciate this season 45 years later. On September 13, 1980, the season opened with Northwestern, who were in the midst of a 34 game losing streak. Bo's teams had routinely pummeled our purple friends over the years. The only real coaching strategy seemed to be to take the foot off the gas late in the annual blowout. But in 1980 it was unique and expectations of Bo's 11th season Ann Arbor, were relatively low. The preseason pollsters placed them at number 12 in the land and Michigan didn't do much in this game to prove the doubters wrong. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. <itunes:summary>1980 was a special year in Michigan football history and perhaps one that hopeful Wolverine fans might appreciate this season 45 years later. The preseason pollsters placed them at number 12 in the land and Michigan didn't do much in this game to prove the doubters wrong.</itunes:summary>

Gameday Welcome and Argument with Joseph A Simon - New Mexico

We get to talk actual football, but first of all, it's the first game as we get ready for the Bryce Underwood era here at Michigan. So they got to let him get enough reps to get a good game under his belt before next week, and at the same time they got to keep him healthy. That'll be interesting to see how they incorporate that. Also, they got two Cadillac running backs, in my view. How they get off with this offensive line, reconstruct. Sam, I know that's your biggest worry, mine too. But I do think that scheme is going to be a big part of both of those things. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

This week in Michigan Football History Ohio State

Good morning, and Go Blue! Today we renew the greatest rivalry in sports, as once again we face the Buckeyes, this time down in Columbus. While Michigan has had different teams that we'd consider our number one rivals over our 145 years of pigskin prowess, make no mistake that from Ohio's perspective, it has always been about that team up north. So it's no surprise that Michigan figures deep in many of Ohio State's traditions. Consider that, in 1902, after witnessing Fielding Yost's crew pound his Buckeyes 86-0 in Ann Arbor, a teary-eyed Ohio State freshman named Francis Cornell wrote the words to Carmen Ohio, the OSU alma mater, on that sad train ride home.
Throw out the record books on any given Saturday. They put their pants on one leg at a time just like we do. Games aren't won on paper, you still have to play the game. Whoever runs the ball better, whoever takes care of the ball better, often sells tickets, defense wins championships. Insert your favorite cliché here because that's the state of this Michigan team as they head into the game. Knowing the one irrefutable sports axiom, the team who scores the most points will win the game. Does one breakout offensive performance mean we're finally capable of producing those points? Probably not. You can find us at TheMichiganDefenders.com. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

Insert your favorite cliché here because that's the state of this Michigan team as they head into the game.
All right, Joe, you always come to us on game day with your game day arguments, so what do you have us for us today? At the start of the season, I don't think anyone had today's game circled as a red letter, critical must win. But this game is every bit of that. In the last couple of days, as you mentioned, Ira, we've had an undeniable surge in energy in the program. But now bowl eligibility and extra practices may have taken on an even greater meaning, particularly if Underwood and other players become early enrollees and are allowed to practice. But one player, no matter how great, does not a team make. While the first domino may have fallen, the rest have to be in line to complete the chain reaction.

How strange it is for Michigan to have gone from being resoundingly criticized for having a poor NIL game to now being criticized for being at the fore of it. And add to that revenue sharing next year, and this could be one wild December for transfers and one wild ride. to the finish line in recruiting. But don't forget the second part of Bo's legendary the team speech. After you leave here, you can go anywhere. You want to play anywhere you want to play, but you will never play for a team again.

The law office of Joseph A. Simon, located right across the street from Michigan Football Stadium. All we do is criminal defense.
This week in Michigan football history with Professor Greg Dooley. Michigan has squared off against countless teams that could be called our rivals over the years. But once upon a time, we had one clear nemesis in the field. And it wasn't Ohio State, Michigan State, or even Notre Dame. It was a conference foe no longer in the Big Ten.
This week in Michigan football history with Professor Greg Dooley.
"Good afternoon! Today we journey back to 1907, a year that marked the beginning of a truly unique chapter in Michigan football history. On this very day, the Wolverines traveled south to the heart of Nashville, Tennessee to face off against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Michigan was a founding member of what we now know as the Big Ten. Back then it was the Western Conference, established in 1896. The decade that followed saw an explosion of popularity in football, with schools like Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and of course Michigan leading the charge and fueling the frenzy." What do you have for us? I think you guys are going to like this. There's an old adage in my business. When the facts are against you, argue the law. When the law is against you, argue the facts. When the facts and the law are against you, just argue. And I guess today's football equivalent would be, if the defense is against you, ball out on offense. If the offense is against you, ball out on defense. If the offense and defense are against you, just ball out. You can find Joe at TheMichiganDefenders.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
This Week In Michigan Football History 10/26/2024

Good evening to the Maize & Blue faithful. Tonight's edition of This Week in Michigan Football, as always, draws inspiration from none other than the legendary voice of Michigan football, the one and only Bob Ufer. Ufer's energy, his electric enthusiasm, and his undeniable passion for Wolverine football were simply unmatched. Though we lost Ufer in his battle with cancer on this day in 1981, his spirit lives on. Alive in our hearts, our minds, and through the echoes of the unforgettable broadcasts that still reverberate around campus today as we tailgate, and will continue for generations. When Eufer uttered, Michigan, he was channeling the grand old man of Michigan football himself, Fielding H. Yost. Yost, a native West Virginian, never quite lost that Southern twang.
This Week in Michigan Football History 101924

This week in Michigan football history with Professor Greg Dooley. Today, your beloved Wolverines take part in a celebration in Champaign, as Illinois honors the 100th anniversary of the dedication of Memorial Stadium. But this date is much bigger than that historic building, and that's because of what happened on this day exactly a century plus one day in 1924. Michigan was the Illini's guest for that special day, and what happened in the game was one of the greatest performances in football history. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In great football irony, this Michigan team that has performed so poorly in the second half of games now enters the second half of the season with a critical need to perform much better than they did in the first half. While the bye week may have arrived at the perfect time, uncertainty remains, particularly on offense.
This Week in Michigan Football History 100524

This week in Michigan football history with Professor Greg Dooley. Tonight, we travel way out west for an unlikely rematch of last year's national championship game...and of course, welcome the Washington Huskies to the Big Ten. U-Dub's pigskin history dates all the way back to 1889, and have played at their home stadium since 1920. But we save this evening for a more traditional conference opponent. I'm talking about Mrs. Steve Clark's beloved Hawkeyes, in a game played just after World War II in 1946. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

This week in Michigan football history with Professor Greg Dooley. Well, well, well, we have a lot to cover this morning, so hang on to your maize and blue fedoras. We send a birthday salute to none other than old 98 himself, 1940 Heisman winner Tom Harmon. Today also falls on the day of one of his greatest games, September 28th, 1940 against Cal. This day is historic for another reason, as it marked the Michigan coaching debut of the great Fielding H. Yost against Albion College back 123 years ago in 1901. This day is historic for another reason, as it marked the Michigan coaching debut of the great Fielding H. Yost against Albion College back 123 years ago in 1901.</itunes:summary>

Good afternoon. Today we offer a warm welcome to our friends from Southern California as they officially join the Big Ten Conference. You know we've squared off with the Trojans many times, ten in all, with eight of those in Pasadena. But for this week in Michigan football history, we rewind to 1985. Expectations were pretty bleak on that year. After all, Michigan had just come off a frustrating 6-6 season in 1984. Bo Schembechler's only year without a winning record.
Last Saturday, Michigan lost a regular season game for just the second time in over three seasons, and yet I think it's fair to say our expectancy was violated in that loss, not just because we lost, but because we looked significantly outmatched in that loss. Michigan winning 29 straight games, three straight conference championships, achieving three straight playoff appearances, and of course winning it all last year, resulted in our feeling that we'd been restored to being a perennial, nationally relevant program.
This Week In Michigan Football History 091424

Good morning. September 14th holds a special place in Wolverine lore, as it was this day in 1975 that the iconic football post-game TV show, "Michigan Replay" debuted...and on a sad note, on September 14th, 1972, we lost the great Michigan All-American and head coach, Harry Kipke. Kip remains the only Wolverine to win a national championship as both a player in 1923 and as a head coach in 1932 and 1933. This day will forever be enshrined in Michigan football lore for what happened on this day in 1991. Some of you know it when I simply utter the down in distance, 4th & 1.
