Meet Amra Pajalic author of Time Kneels Between Mountainsaward winning author, educator, and PhD researcher. In 2009 she won the Melbourne Prize for Literature's Civic Choice Award for her debut novel The Good Daughter, which has since been re-released as Sabiha's Dilemma. Her latest novel, Time Kneels Between Mountains is a wonderful book. It is set in 1992 in Srebrenica, a town in Bosnia which experienced deep conflict and trauma at this point in history. It tells the story of the teenage girl Seka, who tries to fight against the injustices she sees during this time of collective trauma, and also her fight to survive.

He manages the One House, One Family (OHOF) initiative, a project in Bangladesh that funds and builds permanent and free homes for climate displaced families. Nicky is a young girl of mixed descent, and daughter of the help on the farm. The harshness of those times, tests this relationship further, when the homestead is raided by the brutal, vengeful policeman, Koos.

Ada Blackjack was stranded on Wrangle Island, in the Arctic Ocean, for more than 2 years. Her four male explorer companions all perished in the harrowing conditions. Not only that, when she arrived on Wrangle Island, she had zero survival skills. Everything she learned, she taught herself after the men had disappeared and died.

I knew that it was a significant event connected to the end of slavery, but this episode does a wonderful job at explaining the significance of Juneteenth and tells the story of the activist Miss Opal Lee who fought to make Juneteenth an official national holiday in America. In 2021, she was finally successful.

Meet Irene Longman, the first woman to be elected into Queensland Parliament in 1929.

Could you imagine living in a society where when they were designing the parliament house, they didn’t even bother to put a female toilet in? Well, in 1929 Irene Maud Longman broke the glass ceiling in Queensland that women could stand for and be elected into QLD Parliament.

WWII Northern Territory Special Reconnaissance Unit Case 12

During World War II, Aboriginal Australians were generally not accepted into the armed forces, the Army, Navy nor Airforce. However, this all changed after Japan entered the war and the government began to fear the security of the Northern Territory. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Soldiers in the north of Australia were recruited. More than 800 signing up to join the uniformed Torres Straight Light Infantry. But there was another group that will be our focus for today. The group was made up of 50 non-uniformed men with incredible tracking skills, who became known as the Northern Territory Special Reconnaissance Unit.

Learning to navigate a digital archive can be incredibly useful when it comes to researching and a great starting point for any research assignment. The Plague in Australia, Roses are Black

So, for the final episode of 2020 where we have been living through a pandemic, I wanted to look back at a different pandemic, the bubonic plague, but not the Black Death of the 1300s that you may be thinking of. I want to look into an outbreak that is a little less well known, the time that the bubonic plague came to Australian shores.

The actions of Rosa Parks in 1955 were a catalyst for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and it would be easy to say she was a tired old lady who just needed to sit down whilst riding a bus and that sparked the chain of civil rights events. But there are a few things wrong with that narrative. Find out why Rosa was chosen as the face of the boycott rather than Claudette Colvin.

Nuclear Testing in Maralinga Australia

In the early 1950s, the Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies, received a request from the Prime Minister of England, Clement Attlee, requesting if Britain could conduct their nuclear weapons testing in Australia. Without so much as talking to the politicians in his cabinet or requesting any information or reports on the possible health or environmental risks, Menzies said yes, and even committed Australian servicemen to help the British carry out their tests. Thus, began the testing in Monte Bello Islands off the coast of Western Australia, and the 2 sites in South Australia, Emu Field and Maralinga.

The Nun Shogun Hōjō Masako

Before there was the Warrior Nun on Netflix, there was Hōjō Masako, “Shogun Nun”, who was the wife of the very first shogun of Japan and a formidable political activist. After her hubby died, she shaved her head, and became a nun, but she continued to hold political sway until her death at 69 years of age, outliving her husband and 4 children.

Rani of Jhansi and the Sepoy Rebellion
