Did Round One of the OHL playoffs disappoint? The North Bay Battalion sure didn't.

We don't want to take anything away from the Flint Firebirds, but their first round dominance has to be measured against Owen Sound's disinterest. It was a playoff failure for the ages for the Attack and we're left with a lot of questions in the Scenic City. Plus, play(off) time is over for the Guelph Storm. Nobody expected them to get past Windsor, but suffering a sweep and struggling to score indicates a big job ahead to retool a roster that's going to be ready to host the Memorial Cup in 2027. And don't worry, this is The OHL Podcast, so it's not all about the Western Conference. Farwell and Dan are analyzing the entire first round and they've got some flowers for North Bay. Lots of flowers. With Round Two about the begin, you're also getting the guys' predictions, ready or not.

There was a clear conflict of interest on the Memorial Cup selection committee. Some argue there was even more than one conflict on the committee. And while the fans argue about sour grapes or undeserving hosts, Dan and Mike are trying to tell the real story. Guelph prepared a great bid and deserves every one of the perks that come with hosting the Memorial Cup. But we can't lose sight of the problem that's been unearthed here by some excellent reporting, and that's the problem Dan and Mike are focusing on. But the decisions to fire one guy just because you can't fire 20 sometimes leave us scratching our heads, and that may never be more evident than now, as we find Mathieu Turcotte on the free agent market. He's got a decade-plus experience in the Q, a Coach of the Year trophy with a U18 AAA team, a Telus Cup, and a silver medal from the Canada Winter Games. He also spent last summer coaching some of the best young players in Canada at the World U17s, U18s, and Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, coming home with two gold medals and a bronze.

It's a new OHL season full of promise, unless you're dumb enough to try and predict the finishing order of all ten teams in the Eastern Conference. Why should you do that, though, when Dan and Farwell are plenty dumb enough to do it for you? The guys give it the ol' college try in predicting this year's Eastern Conference and, speaking of college, that NCAA rule change is still making waves. Plus, there's a potential that more players will move to the AHL early, and a guarantee that either Kitchener or Guelph will host the 2027 Memorial Cup (the guys think they know which market will win the bid). We've also got rule changes aplenty, and plenty of complaints about the OHL's new jersey sponsor (just not from Farwell). All in all, plenty to fill your ears after a summer away. The CHL leads all leagues at the NHL draft, but will that last?

As expected, the OHL had a dominant showing at the NHL draft, with five of the first eight selections coming from the league and an overall showing that was the best the OHL has had in almost a decade. Farwell and Dan break it down and also clean a few other things out of the notebook as we head into summer, including the trade of a two-time OHL champion and a new market to emerge as a Memorial Cup bidder. Plus, just for fun in our final episode of the 2025/26 season, we make it a family affair with an appearance from Dan's older brother (who also happens to be an old friend of Farwell's). Matt Meagher makes his home in Ottawa and brings us a fan's perspective of the new arena that will be built and how strong the 67's brand remains in the nation's capital.

It's been famously said in Canada that if you don't like your weather out the front door, just take a look out the back door instead, where you're sure to find something more to your liking. Similar phrasing might be appropriate when discussing the NCAA rule change that has shifted the ground beneath junior hockey in Canada: if you don't like how the rule change is impacting the CHL this week, just wait a week and your feelings are likely to change. The environment has been that turbulent in this new era, which currently still resembles the wild, wild west. And the rollercoaster ride isn't likely to end anytime soon, so just let Farwell and Dan be your steady hands as we navigate this new landscape (trust us, we tried to get a hot take out of Dan this week and he wouldn't bite).

The guys this week discuss how the tide has turned back in the OHL's direction, and the lengths that teams are going through to set themselves apart. Also, the Branch era in the OHL appears to have officially ended. Then, it's off to Oshawa where a strange coaching carousel continues to rotate and the marquee franchise pours cold water on sale rumours (remember what we always say about rumours in the OHL??). Finally, McCue is on the move again and the guys like the destination. But they don't like what happened to an old friend in the NHL.

The London Knights' Memorial Cup mission is accomplished

It's hard not to admire greatness and the London Knights put on a show for the ages this season, starting the campaign on a mission to win a Memorial Cup and becoming just the fourth team in the past 53 years to win three (joining Windsor, Cornwall, and Kamloops). London's trio of trophies have all come since 2005, while Windsor won their three in a 9-year span (discuss amongst yourselves). No matter how you slice it, it's impressive as hell and haters are gonna hate, but you have to tap your stick to the Knights, their program, and their relentless pursuit of the 2025 title. London lost just one OHL playoff game and one Memorial Cup game en route to the championship.

There's more to the OHL than London, though, and the guys have got concerns that the North American junior-aged hockey scales are beginning to tilt the NCAA's way. Plus, Barrie will have to get used to life without Marty behind the bench, the IceDogs find their GM, and OA goalies might have to find a place to play as the OHL decides against allowing an extra 20-year old roster spot for netminders.

The Brantford Bulldogs make a big mistake and an OHL Finals rematch may be coming

The OHL considers increasing Imports and Oshawa returns to the East Final

We can continue the debate about whether this was the best OHL second round in a decade, but we can do it after we enjoy two Game 7's. That's right, half of the OHL's second round series' are going the distance and, in the case of Windsor-Kitchener, one team is trying to come back from 0-3 down. It's going to be a great day for the league and its fans. London, which still hasn't dropped a game in these playoffs, awaits the West winner while the Oshawa Generals will watch Barrie and Kingston to see where they play next (Oshawa, the 4-seed, will start the East Final on the road). Speaking of Oshawa, the Gens came into this season on a mission. After being swept out of last year's OHL Final by London, the Gens' plan was to finish what they started in 2024. Are they on a collision course with the Knights again? Jack Moore, the voice of the Oshawa Generals, joins us to break down the season and the playoffs so far. He'll also tell Farwell how he got it so wrong after Farwell picked Oshawa to lose in both the first AND second rounds this year. We've got more news from around the league, too, as there's talk of increasing the number of Imports, an Eastern Conference team gets a 15-year extension on its arena lease (but that arena needs some TLC), and OHL fans got robbed of one of the league's most dynamic players to end the playoffs (and, as a result, Brantford's season may have ended prematurely). Asselin is a great example of making the most of a hockey career, leaving North America and winning back-to-back-to-back titles in Europe. Along the way, he also developed a passion for photography, which now has the budding entrepreneur thinking about options beyond the game. But he's not done playing yet, and Asselin has plenty of stories to share.

A second round pick of the Royals in 1980, Calder would win the Memorial Cup in his sophomore season, the second of back-to-back titles for the Royals as they moved from the QMJHL to the Ontario league. He played as one of the youngest-ever players with Canada's World Junior Championship squad in 1981 and was ultimately drafted in the third round by the Washington Capitals. Calder made his professional mark in Europe, though, and is also credited with helping to grow the game in, of all places, China. A self-proclaimed "hockey lifer," Calder remains committed to helping young players develop their skills today and he's always ready to spin a yarn.

The Kitchener Rangers celebrated the 1982 Memorial Cup team last week and more than a dozen players from the franchise's first championship showed up. For some, it was their first time back inside the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium since they played in the arena more than 40 years ago. The Aud has undergone a couple of significant renovations since 1982 but the building still brought back a lot of memories for the players, who share some of those memories with us. We tried to talk to as many of the players as we could during the whirlwind tour, so here's a few minutes with Bellows, Stevens, and MacInnis -- guys who each went on to win Stanley Cups and two of whom are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The knock was always that he was too small. But from junior to the pros, Don Edwards didn't listen. He just stopped pucks. From the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL to a Vezina Trophy with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, Edwards would go on to play for two more teams, including his childhood favourite Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also a member of Team Canada at the 1981 Canada Cup and his story about getting into prime physical condition is not one you'll soon forget. Off the ice, Edwards's life was marked with unspeakable tragedy and, if you don't yet know the story, you'll understand why he harbours ill-will towards Canada's legal system to this day, while repeatedly appealing to keep a convicted killer behind bars.

Steve Nimigon never expected to play for the Erie Otters. An NHL draft pick of the Hartford Whalers, Nimigon thought he'd have turned pro the year the Niagara Falls Thunder left town to become the Erie Otters. But Nimigon not only played for the Otters, who wore the 'C' for the team, he got involved in every aspect of establishing an OHL franchise in a new market, and the Otters Humanitarian Award is named after him today. Nimigon is also credited with being among a core of players that helped pave the way for the Otters first championship in 2002. You'll find out why when you listen.

The NHL's reversal of an ill-conceived ban on Pride Tape has shown that hockey's 2SLGBTQ+ community -- and its allies -- is more prominent than the league realized. If this is the way we have to drag hockey into the present and, ultimately, the future, we seem ready to do it. Even before the ban was reversed, important conversations were happening and it's notable that two former OHL'ers were leading the way when it came to either outright ignoring the ban, or saying they would. We sit down today with Dr. Kristopher Wells, Canada Research Chair (Tier II) for the Public Understanding of Sexual and Gender Minority Youth, and the Director of the MacEwan Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity. Wells is also the co-creator of Pride Tape and if anyone who knows how much impact some hockey tape can have, it's Wells.

Bancroft was also a 1st rounder to the NHL in one of the most unique drafts in hockey history. Fresh off his induction into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame, Bancroft shares some terrific stories from his career with us.

But he impressed the Hounds enough at rookie camp that he was signed by the following Christmas before embarking on a 300-plus point OHL career. Rob Hisey would go on to play for the Erie Otters and the Barrie Colts en route to a 14-year pro career that included a championship in Austria. And Hisey's legend lives on, online. Just pop his name into YouTube and see unthinkable goals like this from the OHL's skills competition in 2005, or Hisey's personal favourite, this OT winner in Germany. Today, Hisey is coaching his kids, who might be in the OHL before long. Not long after that, Hisey might find his way behind an OHL bench...

From inside the league offices to on the road to create the film that captures a century of Memorial Cup, few have seen junior hockey from as many angles as Aaron Bell. He was a big part in getting the OHL's draft online, even staging his own apartment as the back-up connection in case things went sideways. He helped to establish OHL Images and, to this day, many photos from the game will still have Bell's watermark on them. Oh, and he's a Belleville native who can tell the hockey history of the Quinte region city in rich detail. It's hard to not miss Belleville being in the OHL, and it will be even harder after listening to Bell.

Grimes is well-known for spending considerable time alongside George Burnett, from Belleville to Guelph. While Grimes has been to Memorial Cups, the championship has eluded him...but international success has not. From playing for Larry Mavety to coaching with the Guelph Storm during their remarkable 2019 come-from-behind playoff run, Grimes has stories to spare and the willingness to share them.

He came from the Soo Greyhounds and would finish his career in Sudbury before going on to win a national championship with St. FX. From there, it was off to the pros -- where Cory Pecker's name kept popping up. Snider can now be found behind the bench, coaching some of the brightest lights in the game, including a recent 1st overall pick to the NHL. That just might be where we find Snider someday...

If you look at the 1981 NHL entry draft, you'll see only one name selected ahead of this week's guest. Dale Hawerchuk went first overall to Winnipeg, and then Doug Smith was selected by the Los Angeles Kings. That fact alone speaks to the whirlwind that was Smitty's career, from being one of the highest scorers with the Ottawa 67's, to being an impact player in the NHL. He even set up the game-winning goal in the Miracle on Manchester, the Kings' playoff comeback over Edmonton that remains to this day the biggest comeback in NHL playoff history. And all of this before a devastating injury that almost ended his life, certainly should have left him paralyzed, and instead has led to an inspiring second career.

It's a brutally honest story that has a storybook ending and, as it turns out, Smith isn't done teaching us things yet.

In other words, just another typical goalie.

But Iain Fraser's story is really more like a lifetime of friendships forged with both teammates and opponents. These friendships continue to this day and just ask anyone about "Fraz" (I asked several people) and watch their face light up. "Smart player who played both ends of the ice so well" and "one of the toughest guys I ever played with, on and off the ice" were just a couple of the responses. Through all the stops over all the years, and after all the encounters with all the coaches, one of the biggest things OHL fans will remember is that Fraz captained the winning team during The Greatest Memorial Cup Ever.

He was the 4th overall selection in the 2010 OHL draft, going from his home in the Niagara area to the league's smallest market in Owen Sound. And Jarrod Maidens would cap his rookie season with what is still the biggest goal in Attack franchise history. His sophomore season was marred by injury and despite repeated attempts to return to the game, Maidens was never again the player he once was. That didn't stop the Ottawa Senators from drafting him in the 3rd round in the 2012 NHL draft but Maidens would never play an NHL game. By the age of 20, when some players are playing their OA seasons, Maidens was planning his retirement from the game. Yet despite the many challenges, he remains upbeat and brings a great perspective to the game we love.

Two of the league's longest-serving broadcasters just so happen to be working for teams that are forever linked in OHL history. In 1989, the Guelph Platers moved to Owen Sound, bringing major junior hockey to Grey County and leaving the Royal City without a team for the first time since 1968. When the Platers arrived in Owen Sound, it opened a broadcasting opportunity for Fred Wallace, the only voice the team has ever known (they became the Attack in 2000). Meantime, in Guelph, major junior hockey would return in 1991 when the Hamilton Dukes re-located. Enter Larry Mellott, the only voice the Storm franchise has ever known. Geographically linked by Highway 6 and forever foes by division and history, somehow, Fred and Larry forged an unlikely friendship. Then again, when you listen to this podcast, you'll realize the friendship isn't all that unlikely at all. And boy, do these guys have stories! Working alongside Hall of Fame names like Quinn, Carlyle, and Wilson, Dennis shares what he's learned along the way and his philosophy for building a junior hockey champion. Meantime, Mike McKenzie moves back to the front office after amassing a winning percentage of near 0.600 in two years behind the Rangers bench. Arguably his preferred role, McKenzie is no stranger to making a splash when he sees a deal that can improve his team. Will this be the duo that can bring Kitchener its first Memorial Cup since 2003?

A Kitchener kid who got to step behind an OHL bench with his hometown team. But it was not a direct path. Paul Fixter was destined for law school when a coaching opportunity came up with the OHL’s Cornwall Royals and once the coaching bug bit, there was no turning back. The path led Fixter to the NHL, where he worked with some of the biggest stars in the game…and won two Stanley Cups. The story of how he landed his first NHL job is as funny as it is entertaining, and Fixter is even laughing a little now when he looks back at an incident while coaching in Sudbury that he regrets to this day. He’s frank, he’s honest, and it’s a wonder he hasn’t found a place back in the game somewhere.

After his rookie season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Wayne Groulx racked up three straight 100-plus-point seasons.

He played with wingers named Bob Probert, Rick Tocchet, and Ron Francis.

In his final year in the Ontario Hockey League, 1985, Groulx and his ‘Hounds won the OHL Championship. Groulx earned the Red Tilson Trophy as Most Outstanding Player.

Drafted in the ninth round by the Quebec Nordiques, the Welland native played just one game In the NHL, in the Montreal Forum, against the Canadiens.

From there, Groulx went overseas becoming a star in the Austrian Hockey League in the late 1990’s. Later, his son Daylon would follow in his footsteps playing in the OHL with the Owen Sound Attack and the Ottawa 67’s.

After spending 2.5 years in Kingston, Tony Iob was traded to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he won two straight Ontario Hockey League Championships. After failing to win a game in his first trip to the Memorial Cup, Iob and the Hounds made it to a heartbreaking Memorial Cup Final against Scott Niedermayer and the Kamloops Blazers. Iob would go on to play a couple seasons pro in North America before heading overseas. After an 18 year pro career, representing Italy in the Olympics, and many World Championships the love of the game still runs deep in the former OHL tough guy

It didn't seem to throw him off, though, as Justin Peters would go on to become a 2nd round pick into the NHL and embarked on a pro career that was always rooted in Blyth, Ontario.

When you ask, we listen. So, when you asked for a guest with ties to the Niagara Falls franchises to appear on the podcast, we set about to finding Jason Clarke. But finding Jason Clarke is a story unto itself and, thus, you get TWO Jason Clarkes in one episode. One Jason Clarke played for the Niagara Falls Thunder in the OHL before embarking on a professional career that lasted more than 15 seasons. He learned early that playing a physical game would keep him playing, and in one professional season, Clarke racked up more than 500 penalty minutes. His stories get pretty wild but they also serve as a cautionary tale about the toll the game can take. The other Jason Clarke never played in the OHL but, after finishing his on-ice career with the Ajax Axemen, he went on to a remarkably successful coaching career. After owning and coaching the Carleton Place Canadians to multiple titles, Clarke is now coaching in the Q, where he leads the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Our conversation is more like a coach’s clinic and this humble near-workaholic will no doubt inspire you. It’s like two episodes in one, with two great Jason Clarkes who want to make our game better.
