Lee Lambert is the Chancellor at Foothill-De Anza Community College District and a visionary leader who has served as a senior-level community college executive for more than two decades. Prior to Foothill-De Anza, Lambert served as chancellor of Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, where he led a transformation of the college into Centers of Excellence in applied technology, health care, hospitality, information technology and cybersecurity, public safety, and the arts. Lambert is a dynamic advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, student success, and community engagement. He also believes and invests in employee professional development and growth to better serve students and the community. Among Lambert’s many achievements and recognitions, he was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) awarded him with the Marie Y. Martin CEO of the Year Award, and the National Guard and Reserves of the U.S. named him a Patriotic Employer. Earlier this year, Lee was named Tucson Man of the Year. He currently serves on several committees and boards, including the Advisory Committee of Presidents for ACCT and the National Association of Workforce Boards’ executive committee. He previously served on the American Association of Community Colleges board. In addition to his published writings, Lee is an international and nationally recognized speaker on the future of work and learning. Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, grew up on three continents, and served in the U.S Army. He received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and a Juris Doctor degree from Seattle University School of Law.

Saumya graduated from Georgia State University with a bachelor’s in biology with a concentration in pre med. Her past research has been centered around alcoholism and HIV AIDS in Uganda and Alcoholism and IPV in the LGBTQ+ community. Saumya’s current research interests center around mental health, womens rights/health, alcoholism, and IPV specifically in underserved global communities. Currently she is interested in pursuing a career in healthcare consulting with a strong background in data analytics and coding. Saumya would like to take on projects concerning her areas of interest.

Gina Subia Belton, Ph.D., is core faculty in the Mind-Body Medicine Program and Coordinator for the Contemplative End of Life Care Specialization. She is a transdisciplinary educator who teaches in Transformative Social Change, Integrative Social Work, and Ph.D. Psychology programs. Raised in California by generations of Elders and Ancestors, long before "the border crossed them," her Chicanx and Mescalero Apache identity is alive in Mezistaje consciousness, grounding her ethnothanatological research and decolonial praxis. Dr. Belton is the inaugural Chair of the President's JEDI Council at Saybrook University.

Gina Belton's teaching-learning philosophy is rooted in contemplative pedagogies and decolonial praxis, inviting students to turn toward deep learning through focused attention, reflection, and awareness practices, in learning as liberation. This teaching-learning experience is cultivated eco-psychologically to engage a student's coursework, research, and dissertation journey in such a way, that contemplation of feelings and insights, invites the connection of content with their learning and lived experience. Barbezat and Bush observed that "as students find more of themselves in their courses, they will make meaningful and lasting connections" to their scholarship and thus their lives and the lives of others. Gina is a sought-after dissertation committee member for her collaborative and compassionate support as well as her embodiment as a critical Indigenous researcher and her subject matter expertise in decolonial praxis, decolonizing approaches to research, thanatology, ethnogeriatrics, and qualitative research methodologies, which include Indigenous and critical methodologies, narrative inquiry, autoethnography, phenomenology, and community-based participatory action.

The educational learning structure should be divided into three separate areas: the acquisition of information, experiential learning, and application in real world contexts.

The way that most classes are conducted, people generally don't recall what happened in their classes after they've finished a test or assignment that they studied for.

Memory comes for free when you deeply process information and apply it. When you make a user association, you retain it. Your mind doesn't remember information because you were tested on it — it remembers the information that you engage with.

Despite the fact that Minerva University is unique and there's currently no other system of learning like it, the components that make it unique aren't that difficult. Now, they require a lot of work and different minds, and years of tuning, so the difficulty is actually the adoption and thinking through it.

Anant Agarwal is the Chief Open Education Officer of 2U/edX. He was the Founder and CEO of edX, an online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT. Anant taught the first edX course on circuits and electronics from MIT, which drew 155,000 students from 162 countries.

He has served as the director of CSAIL, MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. He is a successful serial entrepreneur, having co-founded several companies including Tilera Corporation, which created the Tile multicore processor, and Virtual Machine Works.

Anant won the Maurice Wilkes prize for computer architecture, the Yidan Prize for Education Development, and MIT's Smullin and Jamieson prizes for teaching. He holds a Guinness World Record for the largest microphone array, and is an author of the textbook "Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits."

His work on Organic Computing was selected by Scientific American as one of 10 World-Changing Ideas in 2011, and he was named in Forbes' list of top 15 education innovators in 2012. Anant is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of ACM.

He hacks on WebSim, which is an online circuits laboratory in his spare time. Anant holds a Ph.D. from Stanford and a bachelor's from IIT Madras.

Originally from Minneapolis, Professor Jed Macosko has lived in Minsk, Princeton, Belfast, Tashkent, Chicago, Copenhagen, Moscow, Albuquerque, and Strasbourg. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from MIT and earned his doctorate at UC Berkeley. After a postdoctoral research stint with Howard Hughes Medical Investigator Carlos J. Bustamante, he worked with Nobel laureate Kary Mullis at a start-up in Irvine, California than with Professor David Keller at the University of New Mexico. Currently, Jed is a professor of Physics at Wake Forest University. He continues his two decades of research on the mechanics of cells and molecular motors while teaching undergraduates the basics of big data and virtual reality. His lab has received millions of dollars in outside funding, and he is a contributing author of several books. His work has been cited thousands of times, and his parents have been developed in the biotech sector. One of his most fulfilling intellectual projects so far has been at AcademicInfluence.com where he serves as Research Director and Chief Public Liaison.

In fact, she met her business partner, Dan McClure, when she was invited by the UN to speak at Berkley about the innovation lab that she set up in the middle of the earthquake response in Nepal.

Jenny has achieved what everyone else just talks about - she has established innovation labs across the globe which are sustainable and produce results.

Dan is a specialist in disruption. Throughout his 40 year career, he has been a choreographer of ambitious messy change, reimagining complex systems in business, government, international aid, and society as a whole. His work spans multiple sectors and engages leaders in both sprawling global firms and fast moving startups. He is a thought leader that has helped pioneer practical approaches to system innovation, drawing on insights from a wide variety of past roles such as the global innovation lead at the international consultancy ThoughtWorks, and the Chair of the Advisory Board for the UK based Humanitarian Innovation Fund.

Today, as a founding partner of Innovation Ecosystem, Dan is working to make system innovation a core creative capability that is enthusiastically embraced and widely practiced. He has authored a number of papers on systems innovation methodologies and agile enterprises, and is also actively engaged with programs addressing cutting edge issues such as scaling, localization, and dynamic collaboration building.

Although he is sometimes referred to as "The Grandfather of Product Innovation", Dan is right at the cutting edge of innovation and would love to share with audiences why systems innovation is such an important part of the future of work.

Yellowdig are doing something amazing, which is increasing learner engagement in K-12. They've experienced a whopping 200% increase in learner engagement across universities and community colleges. And that’s despite the problems that learning institutions face around student engagement, which are exacerbated by this hybrid world we're living in, largely due to Covid.

We entered this remote-only learning rather abruptly, which has caused a lot of problems for students. The biggest challenge is creating and maintaining an active learner, which is a learner who is truly engaged in a particular course or program.

Most of the listening is basically sitting there and absorbing information. At the end of the class, you might have an assignment or an exercise, and that's the end of it.

What Yellowdig view as active learning, however, is when the student is engaged in learning, they're actually contributing to the learning environment. Tune into this episode to learn how active learning can be applied to classrooms around the world.

When Dr. Hall initially began teaching virtually, the biggest problem was feeling like she wasn't a part of the learning experience. For example, when students would split into separate Zoom rooms, she lost the overall awareness of what was happening among the students.

She asked herself, "How do we build an environment where learning happens, where we can put students and teachers at the center, then evolve the platform around that instead of trying to fit them into the technology that exists?" This was the foundation of InSpace Proximity.

From there, she eventually learned that being able to see everybody who is in the classroom is important from a social perspective, not just for the teachers, but for the students as well. On the other hand, those small group discussions are necessary because it gives every student an individual opportunity to contribute, instead of just one person talking and everybody listening.

What is the best way to go about combining these things?

Her "aha" moment was taking all the concepts that were happening in real classrooms and bringing them to virtual classrooms.

Ryan kicks things off by outlining a core issue in our higher education system, which is that it's severely outdated. As it stands, only one-third of students at four-year institutions believe that they'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to be successful in the workplace. This illustrates an obvious area of opportunity, which can start with collectively changing the way we think and act about the role higher education plays in our lives.

For example, we may need to move away from education solely as a function of seat time, credit hours, or degrees. Instead, we need a significant shift towards an individualized approach, honing in on a specific learner's aptitudes, passions, and interests.

Ryan suggests that we need to pay a lot more attention to individual learner's voices and preferences, which will mean putting the ownership of what those pathways look like back in the hands of the learner so that they can be presented with a dynamic set of options to adequately receive the continued education they seek.

The Urgent Need for a New Higher Ed System with Keil Dumsch, Writer, Editor, and Education Reformer

In this episode of Illuminate Higher Education, N2N Services CEO Kiran Kodithala speaks with Keil Dumsch, online content writer, editor, and committed education reformer.

Interestingly, Keil doesn't come from an education background. He felt compelled to jump off the sidelines as a concerned citizen back in 2009, because he felt the situation with student debt had reached a critical mass.

Getting familiar with the structure of our education system led him to believe that there is a combination of fecklessness, muddled thinking, and overall inability to really highlight the problems with higher education—not only in colleges themselves, but also in the media and the government. None of them are doing their due diligence to spur the immediate reform that we need. Twelve years have passed since beginning of his entry into education reform, and we still have the same problems.

Keil explains that we need an educational system where we are working with employers to make sure that people are getting the necessary schooling across their lives, which means making education more affordable, more customized, and more flexible—through remote teaching or at-your-own-pace teaching.

For the general component of education, we need to put our heads together to figure out how we can ensure that people are getting that general education outside of college as well.

Fact Check:

Keil would like to correct the remarks he made in the interview about Dow Chemical's hiring practices, after checking with his friend (an employee there) for clarification. Dow does hire many packaging science majors from Clemson and Michigan State, since those two colleges have excellent programs in those majors. The company also hires from a great number of other colleges, from the military, and from a wide variety of other applicant backgrounds.

Keil does not wish to single out any one company for its hiring practices. His general point is that overall, white-collar professional employment is too dependent on college degrees, with elite or brand-name college degrees often given preference in many industries. Lauren Rivera's book Pedigree: How Elite Students Get Elite Jobs covers this problem in detail.

In addition, Keil wants to clarify that the higher education documentary Broke, Busted, and Disgusted (an excellent documentary that he recommends watching), does cite the need for better financial education of students and parents, but does not treat it as the sole solution to the problem of runaway college costs. In fact, the film proposes a number of other solutions, such as reducing college costs and offering students apprenticeships and pathways to skilled trades.

Jason breaks down the two types of learners (lifelong learners and working learners) and the challenges they face when learning in a remote environment. The additional challenge for some instructors is translating the classroom content into an online format.

The phrase that tends to be thrown around is to "teach them where they are," and it's part of how Jason approaches all of his teaching. He needs to understand the person and what they are facing, especially during an objectively difficult year.

Together, Ed and Christina launched Husky Communications in collaboration with Northwestern University. It’s a student-run agency, designed to connect students with real-life organizations by bringing the real-world tasks and experiences of running an agency into the classroom. By overlapping the academic world with the world of business, the result is better preparation for the jobs of today.

Their course is largely based around experiential learning, which ensures that educators can become proficient with emerging technologies while, at the same time, preparing students for impactful work, so that neither of them gets left behind.

In their journey, they've come to recognize that there's no such thing as a permanent job anymore, highlighting that training people for just one job isn't equipping them for the future. Education must evolve in a way that people are being equipped to take control of their own careers, which can be done by teaching people a magical mix of hard and soft skills so they can pick and choose what they want to do.

Christina concludes the episode by acknowledging the shift she has seen towards people recognizing the power of their own careers rather than being trained for a specific piece of somebody else's vision or structure.

Dr. Ronald Mason, Jr., President of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), joined this episode of the Illuminate Higher Education podcast to address issues of race in higher education and the role of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Dr. Mason began his career in law but transitioned to higher education. After 17 years at Tulane University, he identified opportunities within the HBCU space at Jackson State University and Southern University System before joining UDC.

In this episode, Dr. Mason and Kiran begin by establishing a working definition of HBCUs as they relate to predominantly white institutions. They are institutional reflections of the Black experience in America, beginning with little to no access to wealth.

Dr. Mason and Kiran agree that education should be a great equalizer and should be a talent production pipeline for future employers. Yet employers insist they cannot find the talent they need. Ongoing systemic challenges of wealth inequality are just one reason why the system, as-is, destroys more talent than it produces.

The conversation also addresses hot topic issues such as historical roots of white supremacy, dangers of miseducation, and Dr. Mason’s optimistic predictions for the future of higher education.

David and Kiran begin by reflecting on the massive impact of COVID-19 on the Drury learning environment. David shares that Drury is part of the small percentage of colleges still meeting predominantly in person and explains the rigorous system of testing, social distancing, and mask usage on campus.

David also shares his journey from IT and tech consulting to higher education, and what he learned along the way. In addition to online learning, institutions use a myriad of software platforms to do business--human capital management, financial, purchasing, and more. Building a tech landscape at a college requires evaluating every business process and desired outcome.

The biggest challenges facing higher education today, in David’s opinion, are increasing accessibility and bridging the technological divide. Students need access to financial resources, mental and physical health support, and basic needs such as food and shelter. They also need the technological tools and support to be successful.

Looking to the future, David advises that tech and IT leaders in higher education remember that it is more than moving from paper to software. Solutions should be implemented with an eye on business impacts and outcomes that advance the institution’s mission.

The episode begins with a brief background of higher education in Louisiana, traditionally a state that has trailed behind in educational attainment compared to other states. As a leader of a university system, Dr. Henderson works to balance the individual identities of nine institutions while leveraging the whole toward some common good for the state of Louisiana.

A key part of this goal is Compete Louisiana (LA), an initiative designed to assist thousands of Louisianans who have some college education but no degree. Acknowledging the myriad of circumstances that could lead an adult to pause his or her education, Dr. Henderson explains how Compete LA supports the learning process for working adults.

Kiran and Dr. Henderson also touch on issues related to social justice and socioeconomic inequity in education. For example, Dr. Henderson shares anecdotes about extraordinary high school students with no plans for post-secondary education, simply because they don’t know what their options might be. He discusses initiatives designed to help facilitate the mechanics of going to college, including registering for the ACT and filling out FAFSA forms.

Competency-Based and Affordable Learning feat. Patrick Partridge, President, WGU Academy

In this episode, Patrick and Kiran address the big picture question: what is wrong with higher education today? In addition to being unaffordable, the outputs of traditional colleges and universities are out of sync with employer needs. Higher education institutions are slow to change, partly because there is little incentive to do so and partly because there is still a high value placed on the “college experience,” i.e. living in a dorm, joining teams and organizations, attending campus events, and socializing with peers.

Patrick discusses in detail the myriad steps Western Governors University has taken to make post-secondary education accessible and affordable. They built flexibility into the system by allowing for asynchronous learning, beginning with class start dates every month rather than twice a year. Students can learn at their own pace by enrolling in as many courses as they need, allowing for balance with other jobs or personal commitments. WGU has also maintained a commitment to low tuition since its inception.

Rather than offering grades, WGU uses a competency-based model for learning and assessment. Students do not receive grades; assignments are judged as “pass” or “not pass.” An assessment of “not pass” isn’t a failure. It means a student needs to revisit the material, continue to learn, and try again. Patrick believes this approach is more reflective of how students will receive feedback and continue to learn in the professional world.

The episode wraps with a brief discussion of Patrick’s ideas about what higher education might look like in the future, and how the customers (students and eventually, employers) will drive transformation by focusing on the ability of education to facilitate earning power.

It is within this context that David shares Degreed’s mission and goals. David believes that schools and employers often weigh learning inputs more heavily than learning outputs. Degreed seeks to change that by rewarding demonstrated mastery of certain skills, rather than simply rewarding someone for completing a class.

Matt is a senior (4th year student) at the University of Michigan studying cognitive science. In this podcast, he provides a unique perspective into what life is really like for university students during the pandemic.

According to Matt, professors have been given some leeway in deciding how to best conduct their classes. Some classes are conducted entirely online, often featuring significant self-guided learning plans. Others use platforms like Zoom to facilitate large lectures and solicit some student participation. Still others are going above and beyond to create interactive digital spaces for students to connect and collaborate.

Matt has identified one of the biggest challenges facing professors and students - keeping everyone invested in the class. It’s just too easy to turn off the camera and go do something else during class. Active discussion is nearly impossible on conferencing platforms. Students are missing out on casual conversations before and after class, comparing notes, and engaging with professors.

Institutions of higher education have been grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact for nine months now. In this episode of Illuminate Higher Education, podcast host Kiran Kodithala, CEO of N2N Services, and Diana Chen come together to discuss the myriad changes and challenges colleges and universities face in this pandemic age.

Kiran begins by noting that colleges and universities underwent a complete shock. They were suddenly faced with state-imposed mandates to close campuses and move to virtual learning with close to no time to spare.
