Quarterback Nico Iamaleava also had his best game of the season and earned several weekly awards as a result.

James and Josh also spend some time looking ahead at UCLA’s upcoming opponent, Michigan State.

UCLA parts ways with DeShaun Foster as football coach

USA Today reporter James H. Williams talks about UCLA parting ways with head football coach DeShaun Foster.

The latest:

DeShaun Foster’s time as UCLA’s football coach is done after three games into his second season.

Foster’s contract will be honored by UCLA Athletics, exclusively using department-generated funds, according to the university's press release.

“I want to extend my sincere appreciation to DeShaun for his contributions to UCLA Football over the course of many years, first as a Hall of Fame student-athlete, then as an assistant coach and finally as head coach,” Athletic Director Martin Jarmond said in the initial press release. “He was named to this role at a challenging time of year, on the cusp of a move to a new conference, and he embraced it, putting his heart into moving the program forward. His legacy and love for this university are firmly established."

Tim Skipper will serve as the interim coach and will have time to settle in with the team, which will not play again until it travels to play Northwestern on Sept. 27. The Bruins started the season losing games to Utah, UNLV and New Mexico.

Foster was asked on Friday night if he thought he was the right fit for the job during the postgame press conference.

"Most definitely," Foster said on Friday. “Because I can get these boys to play.”

Foster was hired in February 2024, following the departure of Chip Kelly, to take over as the 19th head coach in UCLA football history. But his February hire date gave him a late start to the offseason. The Bruins finished 5-7 overall and 3-6 in the program's first season in the Big Ten Conference.

“While this chapter ends differently than I had envisioned, UCLA Football has a bright future ahead," Foster said in a statement. "This program, with its rich tradition, will return to prominence.”

The players will have 30 days to enter the transfer portal. Some will have the chance to redshirt.

USA Today reporter James H. Williams talks about UCLA football coach DeShaun Foster and quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who were among the people in Las Vegas to represent the Bruins at Big Ten Conference Media Days.

Foster bounced back from last year’s misstep in Indianapolis, doing well at the podium to talk about the team. He didn’t shy away from what happened the year prior and took it in stride, mentioning how the situation helped rally the team together as a result.

Foster also talked about Iamaleava and some of the changes he’s made on the coaching staff, which included the addition of offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri and offensive line coach Andy Kwon.

USA Today reporter James H. Williams talks with sports agent Sam Leaf Ireifej of the Ballengee Group about various topics, including his perspective on the UCLA football program, the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) landscape, and much more.

Ireifej also talks about Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa and Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Alec Anderson. Both were UCLA football players who played for Chip Kelly in recent years and recently signed extensions to remain with their respective NFL teams.

Ireifej also talks about navigating other areas within the sports world, such as the WWE. Some UCLA alums have tested the waters when it comes to pro wrestling, including Evidence Njoku.

Several athletes have managed to find success in the years following their career at the college level, such as Isaac Odugbesan (Oba Femi) and Matrick Mondre Belton (Trick Williams). Odugbesan was a shotputter at Alabama while Belton was a football player at South Carolina.

Nico Iamaleava headed to UCLA football?

Iamaleava played high school football at Warren High School in Downey before spending the past two seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers.

He is expected to come in and compete for the starting quarterback role.

Woods also provides an update from UCLA's spring camp to share the latest he's seen from DeShaun Foster's team. He also provides his first impression of new offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri.

St. John Bosco's Epi Sitanilei announced his decision to commit to the Bruins over the weekend, increasing the current 2025 class size to 14 players.

Williams also had a chance to speak with UCLA commit Madden Iamaleava after the quarterback spent a Sunday evening competing in a 7-on-7 tournament at the Wasserman Football Center in Westwood.

Jace Brown, Iamaleava's high school teammate at Warren, was also competing just a day after he took his official visit to UCLA.

Brown will make his college commitment on July 4th and has offers from UCLA, Arizona and Colorado State among others.

**Correction: UCLA will officially join the Big Ten Conference on August 2.

UCLA expected to hire Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator

Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talks about UCLA being set to hire Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator and associate head coach for the Bruins. The first hire for head football coach DeShaun Foster, who was named as the program's 19th head coach in February.

The La Puente Bishop Amat alum previously spent three seasons at UCLA as running backs coach (2003-05) and recruiting coordinator (2005).

DeShaun Foster also announced that the Bruins will have a Spring Game at the Rose Bowl on April 27.

Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talks with former UCLA analyst Darrin Chiaverini.

Chiaverini worked on Chip Kelly’s staff as early as the spring before taking the head coaching job at Chaffey College.

Chiaverini previously played and coached at Colorado before starting his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. He shares his thoughts on Ethan Garbers’ start against Stanford, how the defense has looked under first-year defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn and much more.

The Bruins will wear 1954-inspired powder blue throwback jerseys that include two white stripes around both shoulders. In 1954, UCLA finished the season ranked first in the coaches’ poll and shared a claim to the national championship. UCLA finished second behind Ohio State in the AP Poll.

Bill McGovern news, Nonconference schedule times announced

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams react to the news of Bill McGovern's passing. The UCLA director of football administration died from cancer Tuesday at the age of 60. He joined the program in 2022 as the team's defensive coordinator.

He would miss five of the last six UCLA games with what was noted as an undisclosed illness before returning to coach the Bruins’ Sun Bowl appearance against Pitt on Dec. 31 in El Paso.

The guys also react to the Bruins' nonconference game times being released and how it could impact the attendance for those games. Woods and Williams also talk about the organization that runs the Holiday Bowl is suing the Pac-12 Conference and the University of California Regents because UCLA backed out of the 2021 game citing COVID-19 concerns.

UCLA football recruiting update, Bill McGovern update, Magazine mishap

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams discuss the latest happenings with recruiting, an update on former defensive coordinator Bill McGovern and a magazine mix-up with defensive standout Laiatu Latu.

UCLA added two verbal commitments to its class of 2024 this past week with the addition of linebacker Isaiah Patterson of Yelm High and offensive tackle Marquise Thorpe-Taylor of Mount Tahoma High.

Both players are ranked as 3-star prospects, according to 247sports, from the state of Washington.

Patterson and high school teammate Brayden Platt were among the eight players to take a visit on the weekend of May 5.

Thorpe-Taylor became the third offensive lineman to commit to the Bruins' upcoming class.

The Bruins had eight more prospects on campus this week:

- Salpointe Catholic 5-star edge Elijah Rushing

- Sierra Canyon 4-star WR Kwazi Gilmer

- Van Nuys Birmingham 4-star ATH Peyton Waters

* UCLA coach Chip Kelly and offensive line coach Tim Drevno were among the UCLA coaches and family members to participate in the Tour de Pier event this past weekend for former defensive coordinator Bill McGovern. The group listed as “Bikin for Billy” raised over $11,000.

The event serves as a cancer fundraiser where participants ride stationary bikes outdoors in Manhattan Beach.

McGovern missed five of the last six games due to an undisclosed illness during the season but returned to coach for the Bruins’ Sun Bowl appearance against Pitt on Dec. 31 in El Paso.

In February, McGovern moved into a new role, the director of football administration, after UCLA hired D’Anton Lynn as defensive coordinator.

Quarterback Ethan Garbers, J. Michael Sturdivant and Kyle Ford have been among the standouts on an offense with several position battles open.

Oluwafemi Oladejo has added some depth at linebacker and making a strong case to start on defense. The outside linebackers and defensive line are working together under the guidance of coach Ikaika Malloe.

Shea Pitts on UCLA football career and recruiting Zach Charbonnet

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talk with former linebacker Shea Pitts.

Pitts graduated from Oaks Christian High School before walking on at UCLA in 2017 and spending six years with the program.

Pitts was high school teammates with fellow linebacker Bo Calvert and running back Zach Charbonnet before all three became Bruins. Charbonnet originally went to Michigan before transferring to UCLA in 2021. Pitts played a role in bringing the star running back to Westwood as well as several other recruits during his time on campus.

Pitts' dedication to community service has led to him being nominated for several honors including the Wuerffel Trophy, the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award and the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He was also a Top 20 candidate for the 2021 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year award.

UCLA hiring a new defensive coordinator? Bruins rebuilding?

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talk about D'Anton Lynn reportedly being hired as UCLA's next defensive coordinator.

The 33-year-old coach would come from Baltimore where he spent two seasons as the Ravens’ safeties coach. He will become the second defensive coordinator in as many years, replacing Bill McGovern.

Lynn has nine years of NFL coaching experience, including one season with his father and former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn.

D’Anton Lynn played cornerback at Penn State (2008-11) and was a three-time All-Big Ten honorable mention.

NFL draft prospect Atonio Mafi talks UCLA football career, Shrine Bowl, body transformation

Mafi spent five years at UCLA and played in 56 career games played, setting a new school record along with teammate Stephan Blaylock.

Mafi was graded as the third-ranked guard in the nation and was a member of an offensive line that was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award.

Mafi talks about his time as a Bruin, his experience at the East-West Shrine Bowl and what comes next as he prepares for the professional level.

He also provides insight into his body transformation and his decisions to switch positions in the middle of his college career.

Williams also comments on the latest report regarding UCLA defensive coordinator Bill McGovern.

Whitfield is already out on the recruiting trail for the Bruins and could be a valuable asset as a younger coach representing the Bruins in the same fashion as wide receivers coach Jerry Neuheisel and running back coach DeShaun Foster.

Woods and Williams also discuss the end-of-the-year banquet awards and the five Bruins participating in the East-West Shrine Bowl.

Several Bruins have created some buzz and improved their draft stock throughout the week. All five started for their respective teams and played significantly throughout the game.

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talk about the latest buzz involving the Bruins, including #Dante2LA, DJ Uiagalelei's unofficial visit and Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s status for the Sun Bowl.

While Thompson-Robinson prepares for his future, UCLA coach Chip Kelly and his staff are exploring their options for his possible replacement.

When quarterback Dante Moore took an official visit to UCLA last weekend, members of the fan base rallied on social media to show support toward Moore and tried to help persuade him to flip his Oregon commitment and consider UCLA.

Moore, listed at 6-foot-2.5, 210 pounds, is the third overall prospect (5-stars) in the nation for the class of 2023, according to 247sports.

Clemson transfer DJ Uiagalelei also took an unofficial visit to UCLA this week, according to 247sports.

Uiagalelei was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the country coming out of St. John Bosco in 2020.

While the Bruins wait for a possible quarterback commitment, Fontana Summit lineman Tavake Tuikolovatu pledged his commitment to UCLA.

High school recruits could officially begin signing their National Letters of Intent during the early signing day period on Dec. 21.

Woods also shares some of his interactions with Mike Leach, who passed away this week due to a heart condition. Leach was the head coach at Mississippi State this season and previously coached at Washington State and Texas Tech among others.

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (Clemson) and linebacker Justin Flowe (Oregon) are among the notable names in the portal and both have ties to Upland. Woods shares what he knows about both players.

The guys also talk about the latest players to exit Westwood for the portal and which players have already committed to the Bruins from the portal.

Woods also shares some of his experience from the last time UCLA played in a bowl game.

All-Pac-12 Honors:

UCLA had eight players named to all-Pac-12 Conference teams this week. Running back Zach Charbonnet and defender Laiatu Latu were named to the first team.

Charbonnet rushed for 1,359 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Bruins this season. Latu had 33 total tackles, including 11 for a loss of 75 yards, 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Linebacker Darius Muasau and left guard Atonio Mafi were named to the second team. Muasau had 77 total tackles and two interceptions. Mafi started all 12 games on UCLA’s offensive line, which was named as a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award.

Right guard Jon Gaines II was named as an honorable mention, after starting all 12 games.

Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, receiver Jake Bobo and defensive back Stephan Blaylock were also named as honorable mentions.

Thompson-Robinson set several program records, including total offense (12, 236), completions (844), total touchdowns (113) and touchdown passes (86). He’s also second in passing yards (10,424).

Bobo had 54 receptions for 789 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games played. Blaylock had 54 total tackles, two sacks and an interception.

Headed to Vegas

Thompson-Robinson and Mafi have accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl in Las Vegas. The game will be played on February 2, 2023.

The game will serve as a full-circle moment for Thompson-Robinson, who played football at Bishop Gorman.

Not long after head coach Chip Kelly was hired, the quarterback arrived at UCLA as the Bruins’ highest-rated (four-star) prospect in the 2018 class. Mafi was also a member of that class as a 3-star from Serra High in San Mateo.

Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was voted as the conference’s offensive player of the week after completing 24 of his 33 attempts for 315 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown.

UCLA looks to avoid Big Penix Energy against Washington

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talk about the big game against No. 15 Washington at the Rose Bowl this week. The Bruins will have a tough test against quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and the Huskies.

Penix Jr., who has been referred to as “Big Penix Energy,” leads the country with 1,388 passing yards and Washington ranks fifth in total offense with 530.8 yards per game.

The Pac-12 game also serves as an opportunity for UCLA (4-0 overall, 1-0 Pac-12) to avenge last season’s loss to then-Fresno State head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Woods also explains why the relationship that Penix and DeBoer have serves as an important lesson in never burning a bridge throughout your college career.

Laiatu Latu was voted the Pac-12 Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording three sacks and forcing a fumble against Colorado. Another successful outing could make the difference in stopping Penix from having a good night offensively.

Latu transferred from Washington (4-0, 1-0) after sitting out the past two seasons and medically retiring due to a neck injury.

Running back Zach Charbonnet was a nominee for the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week award after rushing for 104 yards and tying a career-high with three touchdowns on nine carries.

It was Charbonnet’s ninth career 100-yard game and is now tied for 11th on the UCLA all-time list for 100-yard rushing games with Maurice Jones-Drew, Kevin Nelson and Kermit Johnson.

Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talk about the final nonconference game against South Alabama this Saturday at the Rose Bowl. The duo also talks about what the mindset and expectation should be for the final test before Pac-12 Conference play begins.

UCLA safety Kenny Churchwell will miss the first half against South Alabama (2-0) on Saturday after he was called for targeting and disqualified for the rest of the Alabama State game.

UCLA made an appeal on the call, but coach Chip Kelly said the ruling was upheld by the NCAA. Woods shares his experience with being called for targeting and having to sit out for the first half of a game.

Williams shares his observations from practice and what to make of Logan Loya being the likely option as the starting punt returner going forward.

Taylor details what he learned about Washington’s life and career in the 1930s and 1940s.

Washington helped break the NFL color barrier with the L.A. Rams in 1946. A year later, his UCLA football teammate Jackie Robinson did the same with Brooklyn in MLB.
