Practicing Multilateralism

Practicing Multilateralism is a podcast by the Graduate Institute’s Global Governance Centre and the Observatoire du multilatéralisme et des organisations that explores how multilateralism works in practice—beyond theory and into the realities of global cooperation.

Through conversations with diplomats, international civil servants, scholars, and practitioners, the podcast examines how international organizations, states, and non-state actors navigate today’s complex global challenges. From climate governance and global health to trade, peace, and digital regulation, each episode offers insider perspectives on the negotiations, compromises, and innovations shaping collective action.

Grounded in Geneva’s unique ecosystem of international organizations, Practicing Multilateralism provides listeners with a front-row seat to the evolving dynamics of global governance—highlighting both the promises and the limits of working together in an increasingly fragmented world.

Doing multilateralism at the crossroads of trade and the environment. A conversation with Dr. Chantal-LIne Carpentier

Join us for a conversation with Dr. Chantal-Line Carpentier, who is currently Head of the team Trade, Environment and Climate Change Branch in UNCTAD Division on Trade and Commodities in Geveva. Through the lens of her experience in international environmental governance, we explore multilateral practices and address questions such as: What does the day-to-day work of an environmental officer and negotiator look like in one of the most challenging contexts? What should or could be the role of multilateral organizations in the field of the environment? What can we expect for the future of the protection of the environment in an era of rising unilateralism and authoritarianism? Chantal-Line Carpentier offers a positive message to students and scholars interested in researching multilateralism and to those ambitioning to work for multilateral institutions.

Reimagining Multilateralism in the Metacrisis

At a time when multilateralism is under constraint, Louise Agersnap, who leads WHO’s Innovation Hub, reflects on the concept of the « metacrisis »—a fundamental questioning of our entire operating system—and how responses of fostering demand-led innovation, bridging cross-sector partnerships, and launching mechanisms such as the WHO Digital Innovation Investment Platform can contribute renewal. Agersnap discusses opportunities and challenges in engaging with innovative approaches to promoting global health equity, and the importance of democratizing access to technologies like AI-enabled tools and robotic telesurgery. Ultimately, Agersnap encourages students, researchers and people interested in working in multilateralism to embrace the uncertainty of the moment as opportunity, leverage creativity and diversity in collaboration with other disciplines to have greater impact together.
