Fantastic for Tori Owens and I to meetup with Danny Bryant today to talk about his book Unless a Seed Falls to the Ground: Welcoming the Death of the Whiteness Gospel. The book shares both the wounds and rewards of being a native son of a puritanical way of life with the hope of inviting others into a season of hospice in a way that allows it to die with dignity. It's a solid and important read (and this conversation is, too). We talk about how the system isn't broken; rather, it's working as it's been designed to work, how each of us are in the middle of trying to process the violence currently running rampant in our country, navigating these issues with family members who approach politics and religion in different ways than we do, and more.

Hey, friends, thanks for joining me and Tori as we talk to the Rev. Brian Zahnd. Brian is the author of multiple books (probably my favorite is Beauty Will Save the World), including his latest, The Wood Between the Worlds: A Poetic Theology of the Cross.

He's also the pastor of Word of Life Church, a speaker, and a lover of mountains. Last time Brian was on we spent the whole time talking about Rocky Mtn National Park, so we successfully stayed clear of that topic today (for the most part), however he did mention the Camino de Santiago on multiple occassions, something I hope to do before my days are finished on this earth.

Cheese in the Darkness: End of the Season/Era Episode

This episode is a special one for me. As cairns (i.e., rock piles) are used way out in the wilderness to keep hikers on a trail, so the concepts in this episode might keep those in a psycho-spiritual wilderness on trails, too.

I'm trying not to be dogmatic about any of this, but the intensity of the wilderness (or what I'm calling "the darkness" in this episode) has given me plenty of reason to reflect and offer some opinions. As you'll hear, I've identified three general responses that people have (and that I've certainly had) while going through the darkness.

If you've been finding yourself in unknown existential territory, first, I feel for you; second, I think you'll find this interesting, particularly if you're looking for a Jesus-oriented way to navigate your own challenging events; and third, I hope you'll be reminded of the critical role that wilderness plays within the biblical narrative. In other words, you're in good company!

Also, if you've been through loss, I suspect you'll appreciate indigo: the color of grief. Meanwhile, I hope you have a wonderful holiday season, and if you need a place to support before the end of the year (or into the new year), don't hesitate to check out all the good things happening at lovehaiti.org.

Hey, this is my friend, psychoanalyst, and author, Quique Autrey. I've had the chance to be on his Psyche Podcast a couple of times, so when he decided to write a book, I knew I wanted to have him on and talk about the project. It was great to be with my friends Tom Oord and Tammy Vogt recently, talking about our experience(s) with The Church of the Nazarene—both the good and the bad. I think this will be helpful for any of you who have lost faith in your denominational, church, or religious affiliation. And unfortunately, there are a lot of us who fall into this category.

None of this means that all religious communities are entirely dysfunctional, and none of this means that we shouldn't stop attempting to improve upon the next iteration of religion. Religion is never, ever going away. It will always be with us, so we must name the stuff we've been through as best we can and move forward in health. Well, in a tiny way, this episode is trying to do just that.

With it's emphasis of relation over substance and possibility over predetermined endings, open and relational theology provides a way forward for both Muslims and Christians. I became even more convinced is the reality as I was editing a recent SacraSage Press book entitled Open and Relational Theology and its Social and Political Implications: Muslim and Christian Perspectives.

Two of the contributors to the book, Saidi Mirsadri and Jared Morningstar join me today to talk about all things ORT related, the Islamic faith, what they wish Christians knew about Muslims, and more. It was such an honor to have a conversation with the venerable Dr. Marjorie Hewit Suchocki about compassion, prayer, sex, justice, power, and theology. Marjorie is an author, United Methodist professor emerita of theology at Claremont School of Theology, and one of the most important process theologians of the 20th century, though here we are well into the 21st century, and she's still going strong! Recently, I read her book, In God's Presence and found it helpful regarding prayer in the open and relational tradition.

Man, this is a great conversation with my friend, Shaleen Kendrick, about neurotheology, integrated ideas of salvation, well-being, and the adaptivity of open and relational theology. Plus, about 40 minutes in or so, we get into cognitive linguistic shame tactics that the religious system engages in (crap, I've probably engaged in them as well), which I found to be really helpful.

Shaleen works in the world of Corporate Culture Coaching and Theology. She's also a podcast host at Desert Voices, an Enneagram-certified Culture Consultant, and a doctoral candidate. In her dissertation, Shaleen is writing about adaptive leadership and redefining it as a daily, three-fold integrative practice for well-being where she's merging mind, body, and spirit with insights from neurotheology, polyvagal theory, and ORT. So glad I'm able to have this conversation with my friend, Dr. Richard Boothby. Rick is an author who teaches at Loyola Univ of Maryland. He has an interest and expertise in Psychoanalysis and Philosophical Psychology as well as religion, Christianity, and love.

His two recent books have influenced me: Embracing the Void: Rethinking the Origin of the Sacred, which we'll refer to more in a part II conversation, and Blown Away: Refinding Life After My Son's Suicide. If you're thinking that neither of these books sounds particularly hopeful, let me encourage you to avoid jumping to that conclusion. Love, for those looking for it, is woven throughout the pages of both works. Pretty interesting.

I had the best time being with the one and only Dr John (Jack) D. Caputo on this episode. Jack is a philosopher, author, and a really important figure connected to postmodern Christianity and continental philosophy. He's also the Thomas J. Watson Professor of Religion Emeritus at Syracuse University and the David R. Cook Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Villanova University. His new book is called What to Believe About God: 12 Brief Lessons in Radical Theology.

His "Weak Theology" writing has influenced me quite a bit and it's no suprise that I quote him quite a bit in Theology of Consent as well as my brand new book, indigo: the color of grief.

Hey, my podcast-listening friends. Thanks for tuning into this short episode that introduces my forthcoming new book, indigo: the color of grief. This surprising little book will be launched into the world Tuesday, Oct 17th, via this Indiegogo crowdfunding site link.

For what it's worth, Brian McLaren said the writing is "Simultaneously heart-breaking, heart-opening, and heart-expanding," Peter Rollins called it "Stunning," Oh, and Richard Boothby said it's "An understated masterpiece." And other folks had good stuff to say about it as well, but good grief, I don't want to overdo it here!

I think the truest thing we can say of God is that S(H)e is love. And the fundamental characteristic of love? It's consent. It feels week, but I suspect it’s the weakness that makes it strong. The weakness of consent is the strength of love. And it’s the thing that can help us move from a negative to positive dominant mindset in the church.

On this episode I respond to questions about moving forward with the church. One young person put it this way: “What is even the point? Given how many people have been hurt, is church even helpful any longer?”

So I give some open and relational theological thoughts, some stuff that’s been influenced by those who are influenced by Bill Hegel, some stuff to rethink omnipotence, mystery, and the misguided but oft-parroted phrase, “everything happens for a reason.”

I also talk a bit about my own personal journey of trying to figure out theology and ecclesiology (i.e., church) after we went through the intense event of losing our daughter. Yeah, that event pretty much colors everything in my life.

Episode 2 is all about meaning making. In most of Americanized Christianity, it’s too often just assumed that once you pray the prayer (e.g., get God inside of you, get saved, do the thing, drink the juice, or whatever) that meaning will just naturally show up. Turns out, meaning making is much more difficult. And I personally don’t think God is just going to fix it for you. Because God is a relational God, which among other things, means S(H)e’s not going force anything upon you. God is love. And love doesn’t control.

Questions built into answers. Countermands built into commands. Imperfection built right into perfection. That's the pattern that's always unfolding.

And my friend, Derrick Logan kinda embodies all of this. One can’t get any higher on the evangelical-worship-scene-ladder than Derrick was, and yet, the questions just continued to accompany him. And it’s not as if you can’t ask some questions in that context. As Derrick said, “It’s okay to question the questions in the box. The problem is when you begin to question the box itself!) So, not surprisingly, he pulled at some threads. Knocked on some doors. Followed some trails. And got himself escorted out of the system but… he’s finding life! Season 4:4 What is the Truth?

Hey, today's episode is all about truth, art, beauty, and story. It's inspired by something Plato said a long time ago (obviously he said it a long time ago!) "Poetry is more believable than history."

Yes, I think so. Because poetry is willing to live in the gray, to blend the verifiable and the unverifiable to get to the truth. I have discovered over the last year or so that I approach this all with a very open and relational philosophical mindset. O/R is something of a subset of process theology. It’s a way of understanding the world that brings together lots of different experiences. A. N. Whitehead would say something like that it's wrong to think that perceiving, knowing, feeling the world is reducible to the senses. Rather, we should be radical empiricists. We learn about truth in grieving, laughing, being skeptical, religious, new approaches to thinking, etc... they are all doorways into learning about the nature of things.

So, let's do it. Let's walk through all the doorways to get at the "nature of things."

Season 4:1 Story

Welcome back. The theme for season 4 is "story." Story is super important. The powers don't want us to think so. They'd rather us interpret all our truth by way of their facts. Thankfully story/metaphor/story all get in the way of their "facts." In the end, I actually think story truth is gospel truth.

For example, did God need King Saul to wipe out the Amalekites? Or was the prophet Samuel, the guy Saul took counsel from, a grumpy old man projecting his prejudice and bitterness onto God?

Story, bro. Story.

It's about the story we're telling ourselves. It's startling to realize this, but the sacred text we call the Bible will read you as much or more than you will read it. (e.g., Rorschach Test)

There's been some psychological work done by guys like Paul Zak and others that suggest that stories bring brains together. Apparently, stimulating the brain stirs up oxytocin that creates empathy, which is a crucial component in humans building relationships with each other.

In fact, I know a lot of people who after going through the faith deconstruction journey no longer pray at all. Hey, we’re wrapping up Season 2 with this, the 10th episode! I know man, it’s sad. But, surely there will be more seasons ahead. We’ll talk a little George Orwell, Jacques Lacan, how similar Christianity in the West is with consumerism in the West, the hammer of God, not to be confused with the Hammer of Thor, and, yes, of course, love. Cuz if it’s not about love, I’m not sure what the point is.

Thank you for playing a part and interacting with this podcast. And special thanks to James, Peter, Julia, and Cindy for appearing throughout this season (and Brian and Thomas). Yes, I’m on first name basis with all of them.

I hope to continue to hear from you on my Facebook page or on Amazon or wherever. I’m jumping back into some education endeavors so that’ll keep me busy, along with mission church stuff, and LQVE, and my boy’s college football games (hopefully there’s a season this year!), and hanging out with my wife (BTW, 30th anniversary in two weeks. Season 2:9 Two General Western Views (James Alison)

Talking with Dr. James Alison helps me consider the two dominant Christian views in the West:
-We're separate from God and gotta get back.
-And we're already at one with God with no need to return.

I lean toward the latter, but only after I get to talk a little about what it might mean to be "at one with God." I love this whole subject, and the thoughts I share here have helped me tremendously in dealing with loss and life, but I will say that trafficking in these kinds of ideas has cost me some friendships. So, I guess, listen and apply gently and judiciously. God bless.

Season 2:7 Untranslating the Misconception for Atheists [and Christians]

Let's get further into some thoughts about the new atheist movement, which is billed as an intellectual movement. I'm (scratching my head now) not sure I agree. There are definitely reasons not to believe in God, but for me, most of those reasons stem from unhealthy Christian theology, not from ironclad philosophical reasoning. I don't think there's anything ironclad in this universe (or multiverse) except... love.

Then again, I don't really have a problem with most atheists that I've met. At least they fight back against unhealthy theology. That's better than most Christianity in the West!

Season 2:4 The Key of Lament

As of this posting, it is Holy Saturday, that strange and awkward day in between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. In some ways, I think we are all "Holy Saturday People." We're all living in the in-between time.

During this time, it's important to grieve what we've lost. Not to make us feel bad, but to help us see our limits, name pain, and define the reality in our lives.

To that end, today's episode is a bit different. I read a chapter of "Death, Hope & the Laugher of God" about lament. It's probably some of the more important stuff I have to say, but also some of the least popular. Ha, how's that for advertisement? Grief and lament are just not fun topics. But, in the time and age we are currently in... Covid-19... a lot of people are experiencing loss. And so, this just might be the time for you to enter into rather than run away.

The title of this episode borrows yet another line from Karl Marx. We’ll go further into “the texture” that is, the life and anti-life that I imagine is woven into the fabric of everything. We'll also talk about what the serpent might have been and where it came from in Genesis 3 and how defining sin is a very difficult endeavor.

The highlight, of course, is hearing from Peter Rollins. He’ll talk about, among other things, his idea of sin and the object of desire vs the object cause of desire. 7-The One About Hell

Well, I’ve talked a lot about love in the last couple years of my life, but the more I talk about love the more the religious people want to talk to me about hell. It’s strange to me, but this podcast helps me understand better what’s going on. I hope it will help you as well. (Spoiler alert: If hell is the deepest thing in your life you will be forced to send people there. I just happen to think there’s something deeper than hell.)

If you want to think upon this topic more (and who doesn’t) please read, “Her Gates Will Never Be Shut” by Brad Jersak, or the hell chapter in “Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God” by Brian Zahnd or hey, how about one of my top 5 books of all time: "The Great Divorce" by CS Lewis. You should probably check out rethinkinghell.com as well. There’s some interesting stuff there. (I'd be remiss not to mention David Bentley Hart's book entitled, "That All Shall Be Saved." Hart is a preeminent theologian, though I must admit, the average reader will struggle with his verbosity!)

I’m not sure I would have ever been able to arrive at new ideas about God (which I desperately needed) without wrestling with Rene Girard’s mimetic theory and scapegoating. There are a growing number of resources out there revolving around the ideas of Rene Girard. Some of my favorites include books like, “I See Satan Fall Like Lightning,” (Rene Girard/William James) “Reading the Bible with Rene Girard” (Michael Hardin), “Evolution and Conversion” (Rene Girard), the ravenfoundation.org, and anytime Dr. James Alison interacts with Girardian thought, which he does a lot in his writing and on his website at jamesalison.co.uk.

I have way too much fun with music on this episode. It’s amazing what one can do with garage band and a few loops from landr.com.

1-The One About How Non-Sacrificial Love is our Only Hope
Let’s see how dramatic I can make this. OK, maybe the most important discovery of my lifetime is the idea that Jesus died neither to gain God’s attention nor to get him to forgive us. I try and introduce that idea in this episode while letting you know you the personal reason why I was desperate to locate God’s proximity on Good Friday. The entirety of my faith (including how I interact with LGTBQ+) now grows out of a non-violent, non-sacrificial view of God.
