This episode is an update to the Generative AI episode we did five months ago. To get a proper grip on what’s happening, we were lucky enough to be joined by two heavyweights.

My first guest is Josh Kubicki. Josh is the is the co-founder and design lead at Bold Duck Studio, the Director and Professor of Legal Business Design Hub and Entrepreneurship Program at Richmond Law School and the creator of the Brainyacts - a newsletter on for legal professionals on pragmatic and practical uses of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools.

Josh and I consider the volume and depth of change to date, discuss the need to get your hands dirty and debate the second order risks and downstream implications of gen AI for in-house counsel.

As the second guest on this show, I was delighted to welcome back Jonny Badrock, Chief Legal Engineer at SYKE. Jonny and I discuss the the key developments in the legal tech space and share what LOD and SYKE are doing in this space.

Learn more

About Josh

The BrainyActs newsletter

About LOD

About SYKE

      <itunes:title>How to be a trusted advisor</itunes:title>
      <itunes:author>Charles H. Green, Mark Dodd</itunes:author>
      <itunes:duration>00:36:02</itunes:duration>
<itunes:summary>We speak with Charles Green, a world leading expert in trust and, in particular, the idea of being a trusted advisor.

Having researched and co-authored The Trusted Advisor book in the early 2000s, Charles has built a career on understanding, demystifying and analysing trust.

We reached out to Charles because the notion of being a trusted advisor is something many of you wanted us to explore further. In LOD’s recent global survey on the impact of COVID on legal teams, we saw approximately a third of in-house legal leaders finding themselves feeling more of a trusted advisor. A link to this report in the show notes.

Smart collaboration - a conversation with Heidi Gardner

In this episode, we’re delighted to speak with Heidi Gardner about smart collaboration – a term she coined to talk about how we need highly-specialised experts to come together tackle more complicated issues than any of them could do on their own.

We take a deeper dive into her world-leading research on how this impacts for legal professionals, and more recently, her research and analysis on what this means for in-house legal teams.

It’s a fascinating and insightful conversation and I particularly like how Heidi has taken a potentially misperceived soft-skill of collaboration and brought indisputable evidence as to how it brings tangible, bottom-line impacts.

Further Resources:

https://www.gardnerandco.co/

https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Collaboration-Professionals-Succeed-Breaking/dp/163369110

https://www.globelawandbusiness.com/special-reports/smart-collaboration-for-in-house-legal-teams

https://hbr.org/2017/09/the-overcommitted-organization

<itunes:summary>This episode is slightly different. We speak with Milan Gandhi, an Australian lawyer, innovation ambassador, a prize-winning law student and founder of one of Australia’s leading legal not-for-profits - The Legal Forecast.

Given Milan’s credentials and keen focus on law students and early-career professionals, we thought we would focus this episode on helping people who are starting their journey in legal practice.

And to help them, we undertook a myth-busting exercise on some of the more common pieces of advice you might hear around the courtyards of law schools and the corridors of law firms.

<itunes:summary>This episode, we speak with Professor Steven Vaughan and take a deep dive into his research into ethics and in-house lawyers.

In October of 2019, LOD released a report titled: "Which Way Does the Wind Blow? " which was a collaboration with Steven and his research partner Professor Richard Moorhead. In this interview, we interrogate the data bit more and examine the tournament of influence that in-house lawyers often find themselves. </itunes:summary>

So, it comes as no surprise that she was excellent guest with so much advice and careful thinking on the topic of emotional intelligence

In the episode, we get beyond the buzzword. What does it really mean for legal professionals, why is trending? Is it actually trending? Is it even teachable? And is it just some zeitgeisty fad with little substance - spoiler alert, its not. </itunes:summary>
