Science and Scriptures

Science and Scriptures discusses the overlap of our physical world of science and the spiritual world of the scriptures. With stories, histories, and interviews, we'll discuss how findings in science provide new understandings of the universe and of the Gospel. It is exciting to realize how these two worlds interface - whether you are talking about the Creation, the reasons for our mortal probation, rules of Earth life that God must enforce, or the role of COVID-19 and other dangers. Join us for discussions and interviews to better understand the larger questions of life! It’s a wonderfully complex world. Science and scriptures are provided to help us figure it all out.

<itunes:summary>Upon reflection, we have to recognize there is a great deal of fiction in the scriptures and religious teachings. Yet, it is there for a reason. For example, what do you think about historical fiction of scriptural stories? Like many, I have watched all available episodes of The Chosen, a TV series that follows the ministry of the Savior. Historical fiction of the scriptures is not only entertaining but educational. We find fiction in… church art. Some fiction was added to the scriptures by… forgers. Jesus taught in parables. In summary, we need to recognize how fiction can bring the Gospel to life and give us perspectives we couldn’t find elsewhere. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This fall, I have a new book coming out, published by Cedar Fort, entitled "Be Ye Wise as Serpents". In Matthew 10:16, Jesus was sending His apostles out on missions. He warned, “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” The point of my book, as you might conclude from the title, is that we need to be more serpent-like in dealing with today’s world. This podcast is not meant to be a commercial for the book. However, I had an insight the other day that I wish to share. I really wish I’d thought of this earlier so it could’ve been included in the book. So, please let me give you a quick preview of the book – and a new example of why we need to be both doves and serpents to understand the Gospel. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Church members can be confused at what they should have faith in. Indeed, the word “faith” is misused often in our teachings. Having faith in something true or having a belief in a fantasy often look much alike, so I thought it time to review the difference. We review the Savior's healing of the crippled man in the pool of Bethesda. The man had a belief that the waters would heal him, when he should have had faith that Jesus Christ would do so. We need to put away the childish ways of believing in unproven claims, and be willing to experiment on the seed of the Gospel - and other aspects of our lives.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>There are so many fictional stories of power, that stories about true power are often lost in the shuffle. It seems that many fables and movies about magical power have made mankind skeptical when we hear accounts of people who have actual power. Jesus Christ performed a number of miracles in Judea – mainly designed to get residents to listen to His teachings. He demonstrated a wide range of power, converting water into wine, making fish and bread for multitudes, and then healing cripples and lepers. Then He demonstrated the ultimate power - power over death. You’d think everyone would be so desirous of the opportunity to overcome death that churches would be packed every Sunday.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I borrow this episode’s title from Gordon B. Hinckley’s book, Standing for Something. As Pres. Hinckley puts it, "Civility covers a host of matters in how one human being relates to another with basic human kindness and goodness. Civility requires us to restrain and control ourselves, and at the same time to act with respect towards others.”
We see less civility on the roads. Profanity, certainly a mark of incivility, is increasing at alarming rates. People allowing themselves to be triggered shows a lack of self-restraint and civility towards others. We are taught to be Christ-like, but that is a confusing word. Christ was too multifaceted a person to describe Him with a single word. I suggest we seek after being civil to others. It is a high bar, but an attainable one. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow developed a Theory of Human Motivation which came to be called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow’s list of human needs is often depicted as a pyramid, since you must fulfill the lower, most basic needs first and only then proceed to higher needs. You will note that, after the first two physical needs of food, drink, sleep, and shelter, needs # 3, 4, and 5 all deal with feeling good about yourself. With #3, you want to be accepted into a group. In #4, you want to feel that you are recognized by your peers and in #5, you want to feel you have self-actualized, or made a difference in the world. That’s a lot of pressure to put on yourself by the way. We live in a world of over 8 billion people. We live in a day when mental discipline is in short supply. As individuals, we need to examine how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs affects our lives. We need to realize that our vanities, feeling victimized, or refusing to apologize due to pride are the natural tendencies of our minds. Your brain never wants to admit it was wrong. Like the prodigal’s son, we must frequently “come to ourselves” to realize where we went wrong, recognize our true friends, and try to make amends. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>We members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often think we know what to expect in the Final Judgment. Each Sunday, we review commandments and why we should obey them. However, if we never link a behavior with a commandment that forbids it, we generally believe the behavior should be okay, shouldn’t it? Actually, there are many ways that conclusion is wrong. We do many little things that, with some thought, are pretty awful. Let me give you an example of such a behavior – running red lights.
Let’s follow a fictional man named… Brother Hurry. Brother Hurry drives through red lights regularly. Really, he thinks, what’s the worst that could happen? The worst thing that could happen is that one of the times Brother Hurry runs a red light, a minivan with a young mother and her three young children are approaching the same intersection as Brother Hurry from the crossing street. Exhausted from a long day of family activities, the young mom is grateful that the stoplight she is approaching turns green just before she enters the intersection. Without needing to brake, she continues into the intersection – and her minivan is T-boned by Brother Hurry’s speeding F-350 pickup truck.
Brother Hurry was willing to endanger the lives of innocent strangers, just so he could take a minute or two off his commute. With that attitude, do you think that Brother Hurry should be allowed into the celestial kingdom? </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In 1930, President Heber J. Grant announced that the church was neutral in regards to evolution. Church members have been arguing ever since that statement as to what the Church really feels about evolution. In my discussions, I have come to conclude that many members reject evolution because they think that the Church rejects evolution. I propose that this conclusion is wrong. I don’t want to try to guess what church leaders really believe, Yet… I would like to venture a conclusion about what the Church organization believes.
I received an email from the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum on BYU Campus. The subject was "Celebrating 50 Years of Evolution at BYU". BYU has taught evolutionary biology for 50 years now, meaning it has spent millions of dollars on the program. It has taught evolution to more than 7500 undergraduates. It has accepted $25 million in outside funding. This is a significant investment. If church leadership did not believe in evolution but has still allowed it to be taught at BYU, it would truly be a rather devious deception. The Creation story you believe even affects your perception of God. A creation that took either six days or four billion years describe two completely different Gods.

Yet, out of necessity, the Church is also guided by society and culture. This has gotten more difficult as the Church has become a worldwide Church. Separating Church doctrine from cultural tradition is often more than difficult. Let’s look at some cultural traditions with which we are familiar and work our way forward. Discussion ensues about neckties, beards, tattoos, piercings, and rock bands in church services.</itunes:summary>

My message today is that, if that young lady will allow the rest of mankind to join her at the center of the universe, she is correct. All together, including civilizations of mankind that live on other planets, the universe really was built for mankind. In summary, the universe, Earth, and life itself are so elegantly designed, so intricately complex, and so purposefully created to provide for every need of intelligent life, that the Creation cannot possibly be attributed to random chance. <itunes:summary>Last week, I posted a podcast about Tribalism and how it can cause fractures in our church and world. One of the signs indicating you are practicing tribalism is whether you are developing conspiracy theories. Don’t scoff. Conspiracy theories have been with us since days of old and we find a number of them in our scriptures. Conspiracy theories were rampant in the 1960s and 70s. It was widely rumored that the assassination of John F. Kennedy was a conspiracy of political and corporate leaders. Some believed that the moon landing was a hoax. It got so bad that a public backlash against conspiracy theories occurred. But COVID changed everything and conspiracy theories have made a new appearance into public discourse. But conspiracy theories allow emotion to overrule reason in your mind and is something that should be fought against, as will be discussed.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>There are certain instincts and mental tendencies that we have that get in the way of recognizing and following truth. If we are not aware of these mental barriers, they can lead us astray. This week we are going to discuss Tribalism, which is an instinct we have to give devoted loyalty to our chosen social, religious, or political groups. Tribalism served early hunter-gatherers several functions, all of which enhanced members survival. Tribalism is an instinct.
Tribalism seems to be affecting everyone to some extent. I have witnessed my friends and family change over the past several years. In regard to political issues, they have become more intractable, intolerant, and even aggressive in defense of their beliefs. Some tribes have armed themselves, stockpiling guns and ammunition to battle the other tribes, or their own government, when society breaks apart. Tribalism is real, it is fracturing our world, and, in some cases, our Church.

<itunes:summary>Besides being accurate, the teachings we receive on Sunday must also be relevant to the lives we live between Monday and Saturday. That may sound obvious to everyone… but our spiritual and temporal lives have been pulled apart for centuries and it has gotten harder to recognize the relevancy of our temporal lives to our spiritual. Our young adult members live in difficult times, and they need to find that relevancy. So whether the topic is on tithing, chastity, or prayer, the its teaching must include recognition of both the difficulties and the blessings of obedience on this side of the veil and the other side as well. Newton’s Laws tell us that for every action in the physical world there is an equal and opposite reaction. Gospel Law tells us that for every action in the physical world, there is an equally important action in the spiritual world. There are only a few precepts of the Gospel upon which you must have faith. This is one of them, but it is essential for us to understand relevancy. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I have mentioned in past podcast episodes and books that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is losing many of its young adult members to inactivity. Millennials, born between 1981 – 1995, were the first to start the exodus. But church members in the I-Generation, born between 1995 – 2012, are not far behind. It would be easiest to simply blame these generations for their lack of faith and accept their departures. However, what does that approach mean for the church in, say, 20 years as our faithful elderly members die and our younger adults leave?
What kind of experiences are being had by wavering Millennial members who attend your ward? Can you as a ward member make those experiences better? The departure of young adults from the Church has made it clear that changes are now vitally necessary. This podcast episode is structured to address these issues.

<itunes:summary>The first weeks of a new year are a good time to reflect on your life. After all, New Year’s resolutions are simply a form of repentance. So, I am going to ask you what I deem, The Most Important Question of Life, “What do you want?”
The question, “What do you want?” slices through all the justifications, excuses, and complaints of an indecisive person. As the saying goes, the question cuts to the chase. What do you want?
In 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow developed the Theory of Human Motivation which came to be called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. To answer the question, “What do you want?”, we consider these needs. I realize everyone is very, very busy. Until the day you have more time, I would like to suggest that you look for "Ethereal Moments”, or moments to step out of the world for a few seconds. Such moments are described in this episode - and may help answer, "What do I want?" </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>A Christmas trivia quiz is both fun and an opportunity to learn a bit more of the Christmas story. I wrote this quiz years ago and have given it many times. It is meant to be entertaining but educational at the same time, so I add comments here and there. There are 50 questions. Good luck.
So, what do we learn from this quiz? Well, we learn that the creche displays and nativity scenes we all love… are somewhat inaccurate. There are many legends that have been written about the birth of Jesus Christ. For example, Jesus’s birth was not in December, it was in April. Mary probably did not ride a donkey to Bethlehem and the wise men apparently did not arrive in time for the manger scene. There were no little drummer boys either. But the important thing is that the birth of the Savior did happen.
This reality check can be done on Christmas hymns as well. “We Three Kings” is probably in error since we don’t know if there were really three wise men or if they were kings. “Away in a Manger” claims that cattle were lowing, which the scriptures do not mention. But there is one hymn that is accurate. The manger scene described by “Silent Night” is just how I imagine it was. In recognition of its accuracy and spiritual effect, I play an instrumental “Silent Night” as I sign off.

<itunes:summary>Not surprisingly, the human brain does not like to consider death – especially its own – which is why many people never discuss their desires with their families. As a society, we are much less comfortable than past generations in dealing with death. The reason to discuss death in this podcast is because one of the most difficult areas of overlap between Science and Religion occurs at the end of life. Today, Death is often a highly technical event – with lots of medical test results and advice from numerous doctors and specialists. But at the same time, death holds a number of spiritual questions. It is best to figure all this out during your life, not at its end. Put your desires down in writing and then come to terms with what you have written. Though they may initially object to having the discussion, share those desires with your spouse and adult children, so they too know your wishes. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In today’s episode, I start with a couple of stories about the earth when it was young. As we consider the Creation, we must recognize that we don’t know what Jesus Christ’s role was. Did He put on work gloves and plant evolving plants? Did He design animal species and create the first male and female? It appears that Lord was probably more of an Overseer of the natural process of the evolution. One may then ask, “How much does God participate in our own lives?”, but we don’t know that either. There is a saying that, to really understand something, you must go back to its beginning. I submit that understanding God’s role in the Creation may help us to understand His role in our lives as well.</itunes:summary>

I propose that some of the descriptors for the Holy Ghost are a bit outdated and confusing. Does the Holy Ghost cause your bosom to burn within you? Burning hurts and the word bosom is distracting. Does the Holy Ghost cause you a stupor of thought? What does stupor really mean? Does the Holy Ghost audibly whisper? If not, what should we expect? We shall examine the answers to some of these questions in this episode. </itunes:summary>

We are encouraged to seek the Power of Prayer, the Power of Faith, the Power of the Priesthood, and the Power of God. On the other hand, we have all heard the phrase, “Power Corrupts; Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely”. Using the Marvel movie Thor Ragnarok as our starting example, we examine the relationship between Power and Sacrifice. Power, even when used to fight evil, requires Sacrifice. Of course, we consider other examples - Alma, the Savior, and Nephi, son of Helaman - of sacrifice and power. We consider the reasons that Power comes through true Sacrifice.

I felt a need to share my belief as to why we live in a world with such difficulties that young people take their own lives. If I cannot offer some perspective on suicide and tragedy to this family and many others who have experienced such sadness, then what good am I to anyone as an author of the books and podcast I write?</itunes:summary>

Tony sheds some light on the challenges faced by the Church legal teams, both in the US and especially abroad. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Faithful Christians have attacked scientific findings for centuries, claiming that they run counter to the scriptures. As it has turns out, scientific findings have, instead, cleared up multiple misinterpretations of the scriptures. In this episode, I give three examples of how latter-day technology has helped to answer latter-day scriptural questions. The first story is about Nicolas Copernicus, who, in 1530, concluded that the earth revolved around the sun. This went against all logic and the scriptures. The second and most famous story is of Charles Darwin, who in 1859 published his book on evolution. The third story is about the charge made in 2000 that DNA sequencing proved that the Book of Mormon was false. The charge was inaccurate, but it led to a better understanding of our scripture. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Most lifetimes, be they of a plant or a star, are linear. But our lives are not. Our lives are eternal – and as we go through the different phases of our lives, patterns emerge. I can see why the Lord would use the term “one eternal round” to describe our lives. I decided to see if I could find an “eternal round” within earth life – phases in our lives through which we all must pass. Just as there are three phases of Eternal Life (the Preexistence, Earth Life, and the Afterlife), I believe there are three phases within earth life that form their own round.
Earth Life - Phase One – Developing Potential in Our Youth
Earth Life - Phase Two – Making Decisions as Adults
Earth Life - Phase Three – Learning Wisdom from Reflections as Retirees
Each of these phases is examined to learn its purpose and our responsibilities during our time that we are in them.

<itunes:summary>This podcast episode is dedicated to answering the question that has plagued me for weeks. “Why are so many people NOT getting the COVID vaccine?” The FDA, the entire worldwide healthcare industry, huge and well-funded pharmaceutical corporations, the United States and other world governments, your primary doctor, and 2.33 billion people across the earth are encouraging you to be vaccinated. My son-in-law explained, "We live in a time when no one trusts anyone anymore.”
Our dollar bills may state, “In God We Trust”, but our society today teaches, “Trust No One”. I don’t think a society made up of people who trust no one is a healthy society. Can we say that we love God, but we don’t trust His church? Can we say that we love our country, yet not trust any of its political leaders? We need to recover our optimism and trust in others, so that we can be happier people. We need to become a little more dove-like and lot less serpent-like.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode, I interview Aaron D. Franklin, a physics professor at Duke University and the author of a new book entitled, “The Spiritual Physics of Light”. From the back cover of the book, we read,
“Light is everywhere. It gives us vision, keeps us warm, and facilitates life. Light is even responsible for developments in communications technology, the internet, and space travel. However, light is not just a physical concept. It is a central theme used throughout scripture to literally and metaphorically describe spiritual concepts.”
This episode is not a physics lecture. The discussion draws on the scriptural metaphor of light, both the light we receive from the spirit, and the light we radiate. It opens up unique perspectives about spiritual communication, the 2nd Coming and the Gospel.

<itunes:summary>It has become very… trendy… in the world now to be a victim. COVID-19 created many victims – snatching away personal health, loved ones, jobs, businesses. Some people have still not recovered from the blows of the virus. This inability to recover seems to have started a trend that has many people seeking to be identified as victims. The media loves this stuff of course. Each week new populations of victims are displayed on the covers of magazines.
Please note that I’m not going to debate the accuracy of the any of these victim’s stories.
Everyone has felt victimized and it can take some time to “get over it” and shed those sticky strands of righteous indignation.
But, make no mistake, the ultimate goal IS to “get over it.” That may be the reason why the Savior spent a great deal of His time in teaching about forgiveness. Victimhood is not a good place to be, and you need to leave it behind as soon as possible. May God bless you in your efforts.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>It’s hard to determine in human history when it became cool to not believe in God. The exodus has been going on for a long time, and was caused by a number of historical events. Worshipping God has always been optional. But there is still a cost for every decision, so what is the cost of giving up religion? Asked in another way, what are the advantages of attending church? Simply put, religion was established from the beginning to help us to improve to become better people.
We have been taught since Primary that we are to seek eternal progress. But that eternal progress should be occurring now, while you are here on earth. If you an active member of the church, congratulations on your efforts to continue that progression.</itunes:summary>

First Our King Then Our Father

I have heard other church members struggle with scriptures where God or His prophets are… violent to the point of taking life. This disturbs many Christians. We need to recognize that God has two roles during Earth Life. We need to understand both those roles to understand Him.

In God’s second role, He is your loving Heavenly Father. You pray to Him, and you seek His inspiration. Hopefully you have a solid and tender relationship with Him. In church lessons and talks, we discuss the “Heavenly Father” role of God about 95% of the time that we talk about God. Our Heavenly Father is like an elderly grandfather with whom we can chat. The relationship is comfortable, like a soft blanket.

God’s first role, however, is of God the King. It is God’s responsibility that the Gospel plan proceeds as it was planned. In this role, God is the ultimate authority figure. Though his relationship with you is important – He has a planet-full of people for which He is responsible. Earth life is not fair – but eventually all will be made just. God will insist that we follow the demands of justice. He must! Because of its harsher edge, we rarely discuss the role of God as King.

<itunes:summary>Strangely enough, there are numerous overlaps between my science fiction books, my textbook science books, and my scriptures. I know, who would have expected that? After all, science fiction is… fiction and the Gospel is non-fiction, so where do we find overlap?
From our scriptures, we Latter-day Saints believe that God has created and peopled more than just our Earth. But there is more. According to Genesis, we know that man was made in the image of God, a pattern that we would expect Him to follow on other planets. Accepting this fact, we should fully expect aliens to look exactly like us.
As we all know, science fiction is a great format for action books and adventure films. But science fiction is a unique genre because it also allows the author to put us into an environment where we are forced to look at our philosophies and beliefs in a completely different light.

<itunes:summary>In the summer of 1977, I was on my mission and a district leader in the city of Tampico, Mexico. While I was there, Elder Dean L. Larson from the First Quorum of the Seventy came to speak at a stake conference. I was asked to translate for him. On Saturday, in between leadership meetings, we talked about the Gospel. I remember to this day almost everything he told me.
We started talking about the latter days. With time, Elder Larson assured me, society would deteriorate. On his notepad, Elder Larsen drew two diverging exponential curves. One line curved up from its origin and the second line curved downwards from the origin. He told me that in the latter days, people would decide to follow one of these two curves. The majority of the earth’s population would follow the descending, increasingly unrighteous curve. In response, the righteous would have to further separate themselves from that society and take an ascending curve of increased righteousness towards God.
I have always wondered what that separation would look like. Now, these many years later, I think I am witnessing the beginnings of that separation. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Let me explain the title of this podcast "My Life Has Never Been Spared" by telling you about three experiences in my life… that could have ended my life. I almost died as a child because I did a childish thing. I almost died as a missionary for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I almost died as an adult, because of one moment of distraction.

But I realize that, throughout history, many 10-year-olds, some of them much more promising than I, have died while exploring a mountain. Better missionaries than I have been killed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Many adult men and women, just as beloved by their families as I am by mine, have died in terrible car accidents. Out of respect for the lives of those people who did die, I do not believe that my life was “spared” by the Lord. I am simply not that special. I was lucky. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I realize I lost much of ‘who I am’ in the past year. My social skills, with people other than my family, have diminished. I am not as optimistic as I once was. And these are NOT attitudes and emotions that I want to take with me when I pass away. They are poisonous to my spirit and I need to be rid of them.
Physically, you have brain synapses that have certain chemical makeups that represent your personality and memories. We know this because if someone experiences a brain injury, the memories stored in that part of the brain are lost. Now imagine that your spirit is superimposed upon your physical brain. Your personality, emotions, and memories are constantly being copied from your physical brain to your spirit. Today we will discuss how to assure your spirit is copying the best of you. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>For those of you who listened to the Sunday morning session of General Conference, you might remember that it was a very international session. Church leaders from countries all over the world spoke to us. In a day and age when everyone wants to show how inclusive and diverse their organizations are, this weekend the church showed the rest of the world how it really should be done. Few diversity programs even try to be inclusive on a global scale.
In 1852, President Brigham Young publicly announced that men of black African descent could no longer be ordained to the priesthood or to participate in temple endowment or sealing ordinances. Following the death of Brigham Young, subsequent Church presidents continued these restrictions. On June 8, 1978, Church President Spencer W. Kimball, announced that “all brethren who are worthy could now receive the priesthood.” We will discuss how those actions might be explained and understood. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The Word of Wisdom is a basic guide for what we should eat, but it cannot keep up with the huge choices of food and dietary supplements available today. So, we often have to try to understand the Spirit of the Law behind the Word of Wisdom as well as the letter of the law behind it. The Word of Wisdom itself is a very good starting point.

However, in our more complex world, many members of the church have come to recognize that there is a Spirit of the Law behind the Word of Wisdom. Basically, we are to live a heathy life, which is a bit more complicated an effort than existed in 1833. For some, it means simply avoiding fatty or high-sugar foods. Other church members go to more extensive measures such as eating a strict diet, working out, or taking a regime of dietary supplements. From my background in the food industry and my understanding of the Word of Wisdom, I wanted to make a few comments about diet and health today. </itunes:summary>

COVID-19 has brought a great deal of fear with it - fear of getting sick, fear of death, and fear of getting loved ones sick.

We will discuss fear of World War II, terrorists, GMOs, and the Apocalypse. We will discuss the fears that parents have for their children and how to not pass them on to those children. Neither your Heavenly Father nor your Savior wants you to worry or be anxious. In today's world, we must consciously fight back fears, realizing the awful effect they have on our minds and spirits. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>When we talk about the Priesthood, we tend to emphasize that it is a “Phenomenal Cosmic Power”. In this life however, the priesthood power is very limited, a fact we can confirm by comparing our abilities with those of Jesus Christ while He was on earth. The Priesthood, in the most basic of terms, is a list of tasks and responsibilities.

A good comparison to the Priesthood on Earth is like learning how to practice gun safety by learning to handle and shoot a BB gun. When we have learned to use the BB gun safely, after this earth life is over, we will be trusted to handle the 30-ought-6 and larger guns. So, now I come to the question, “Why do Women want the Priesthood?” From all evidence, I believe women will be able to hold a form of the priesthood in the next life – and I think that priesthood will contain more power than it does here on earth. Right now, we brethren are just practicing with BB guns… </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Though polygamy is deplored by most societies today, its roots are admirable. The Bible stories of Hagar and Ruth illustrate the plight of women in ancient days. It was an extremely hard life. Women did not own property\ and were under the care of their fathers or husbands. So, what happened to widows who have no one to support them? What happened with their children? Where do they go?
Enter the practice of Polygamy.
If the man marries a woman, he has a legal responsibility to care for her. She has a right to receive sustenance and support and an inheritance should he die. Polygamy was the most practical way to care for widowed women and orphans. The woman would be married to the man of the house, so there would be no danger of breaking the Laws of Chastity. The woman would be cared for and, for her part, carry out responsibilities of the household.

The Authority to Receive Inspiration

Today I would like to discuss who has the authority to receive inspiration. Whereas we can all agree that we all have the authority and right to receive inspiration for ourselves. The question is, “Who has the right to receive inspiration for others?”
The point of this episode on inspiration is that… we need to be wise as we evaluate our own inspiration or that of someone else. As we enter the Latter Days, such wisdom will become even more necessary. We need to constantly insure that inspiration passes the requirements of true inspiration.

Satan and his Role in Earth Life

You see, everyone has a different image of Satan. To some people, he is very real and to others, he is not. In either case, each of us should understand what is known about Satan. However, we should recognize that the means used by many churches and famous evangelists to warn the world about Satan has brought religions much ridicule. Many non-Christians see Satan as religion’s boogey-man and wonder how normally sane people can believe in him. The fact that many people’s image of Satan is of a large man with a forked tail, wings, and horns also encourages the popular belief that Satan is a figment of somone’s imagination.
The first point that I want to make in today’s broadcast is – don’t blame Satan for your bad decisions. Secondly, don't vilify other people as Satan's followers. Throughout world history, barbarous acts have been justified by associating a particular people with Satan. In the end, Satan is real. I just don’t want us to use him as an excuse for our own actions or as an excuse to persecute others.

</itunes:subtitle>

Absolute Truth vs Relative Truth

Absolute truth is the “harsh reality” truth. For example, an absolute truth is that… gravity exists. A Relative truth, however, involves comparison to something else. Relative truth is much less demanding that absolute truth. Think of relative truth like your professor grading on a curve. Your grade is determined by how the other students in the class did. So, you could get a 70% on your test, but still have it be an “A” grade. If you apply this definition to getting into the celestial kingdom, relative truth is also very comforting. This belief often manifests itself when doing missionary work and discussing religion with non-member friends and family. So many times I have gotten the response. “Well it doesn’t really matter how you believe, now does it? If you’re a good person, it won’t matter what religion you belong to, right?” This comment demonstrates relative-truth thinking that “as long as I’m a good person compared to all the bad people”.

<itunes:summary>With all the craziness that we hear of about our government in the past several months, I worry about the relationship between the church and our government. This podcast reviews some of the scriptures and history of church interaction with government.
Over the centuries, religions have learned to cooperate with governments – or suffer the consequences of conflict. In Mark 12:15-17, certain Pharisees and Herodians tried to get Jesus to say something against the Roman government. In answer, he says,
“… bring me a penny, that I may see it. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Cæsar’s. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Jesus responded that, yes you should pay your taxes, thus eluding the trap that was set for Him. But he also instructed them to render unto God those things which God requires of us. This principle is still followed by the church and its members today.
As we understand from the 12th Article of Faith, governments are established to bring order and stability to a land. If you continually fight against those who rule over you, there will be no time for worship and your church could be destroyed. Thus we accept the need to be subject to government officials and rulers.
The church has had disagreements with the government in the past. Polygamy and the Edmunds Act of 1882. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) of 1978. So when our religion and government conflict, expect the church to do its best to resolve the issue peacefully. But if the day comes when the church does have to disagree with its government again, I hope that we as a membership understand the need and are ready for it.

<itunes:summary>There are many people today who believe that religion is outdated and not relevant to our times. The scriptures were written in days long past when life was simpler. Why study the scriptures when the stories are so irrelevant anyway? Besides, how can we believe the stories be true? To answer those questions, we look at some of the more debated Old Testament stories - Noah’s Ark, Job, Jonah and the whale.
What it all comes down to in the end is that the stories in the Old Testament may or may not be real. If real, they may or may not be exaggerated upon. In the present life, I don’t expect we will ever know. But the point of this episode is that it really doesn’t matter.
Jesus Christ used fictional parables, as we all know. But in only a few of Savior’s parables does He mention that the upcoming story was a parable. Maybe the Savior’s listeners figured it out from the wording of the story. But maybe… it just didn’t matter to the Savior or His listeners whether the parable was true or not. Parables were teaching devices, like metaphors and similes. The point of the story was the principle being taught, not the story itself.
The truth of the Old Testament stories has been debated for centuries, when, in all actuality, it does not matter if they are true or not. We should have testimonies of the principles and moralities of the Gospel which we have spiritually confirmed through prayer. Our testimonies should not require that our Bible stories, parables, or metaphors be historically accurate. </itunes:summary>

Endings and Beginnings - Happy New Year

There is both a scientific and a spiritual way to look at endings and beginnings. First let’s look at the scientific side of endings.
Many of the endings in our lives are due to the planet Earth on which we reside. Every 24 hours, Earth’s rotation causes the sun to set and our day to end. Because of that characteristic of our planet, man has developed a “circadian rhythm”. When it gets dark, we feel sleepy. If we have a good night’s sleep, we awake refreshed. The end of the previous day was a good ending because it allowed us to sleep. We are now at our best to begin the new day. The old you becomes a new you.
The planet Earth also revolves around the sun. But because the axis of the Earth is tilted, as we revolve around the sun, we have different seasons. Our calendars may tell us the end of the year is December 31, but the end of the year that plants and animals recognize is when winter arrives.
Endings are programmed into our biology as well. As we enter our early teenage years, our bodies start to produce more hormones than they did before – and childhood ends. Your death is also programmed into your body. Eventually the failure of one of your bodily systems will cause your body to cease its function.
In a process we call “eternal progress”, we should expect multiple endings and beginnings. We are supposed to learn to move on again and again and yet again. The numerous cycles of endings and new beginnings on earth give me hope for a new beginning after death. It seems logical that, with my death, I will simply begin a new phase of my eternal life. In summary, congratulations on reaching the end of 2020. Lets’ hope that 2021 will be a better year for everyone.

<itunes:summary>There is both a scientific and a spiritual way to look at endings and beginnings.

The Plan of Salvation, Jesus Christ, and Murphy’s Law – A Christmas Message

As my Christmas podcast, I suggest that Christmas be a celebration of the whole Plan of Salvation, including, of course, the role of Jesus Christ.
Christmas is a time to appreciate the miracle that the Plan of Salvation works at all. Simply put, humans blunder and the consequences of those blunders occur throughout history. Besides human error, we have “Murphy’s Law” which states that “If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong”. The earth life part of the Plan of Salvation is extremely complex, involving millions of people who make mistakes and centuries of time for them to make those blunders. At this time of year, I am grateful for the efforts of those who have brought the Plan of Salvation to pass, and especially for Jesus Christ, who took on the role of our Savior.

<itunes:summary>During the last two months of every year, we see multiple depictions of Jesus laying in a manger. We sing about the scene in multiple church hymns. We see small Nativity scenes, life-size manger scenes, and paintings. In every one of them, Jesus Christ is an infant. What could be less intimidating than a one-day old baby? To have the proper attitude towards the Savior, we should both love and respect Him. Can you really respect a new-born infant? If you think of Jesus Christ as a baby, are you going to worry at all about the Final Judgment?
Images of God are important. It is the reason why we don't have crosses and crucifixes in our chapels and temples. Our image of the Savior affects how we worship Him. We should develop the most accurate image we can, through prayer, scripture study, and meditation that will both comfort us and motivate us to do well. </itunes:summary>

Changes in the Art of Reading

Only 30 years ago, the world still read books and newspapers for its information, as it had done for centuries. But the art of reading has changed. The most obvious change is that today we read more from computer and phone screens than we do from books. But the changes run much deeper than just a different format from which to read words.

In this episode, I interview Bryce Mortimer, President and owner of Cedar Fort Publishing and Media, based in Springville Utah. We discuss the good and bad of print books, e-books, audiobooks, email, and social media - and how the way we read shapes the way we think.

Mistaken Assumptions in Judging Church History

I have received requests by several listeners to explain the reasons why church history is now cited so very often as the reason that once-faithful members are leaving the church. These disenchanted members have evaluated church history and have decided the perceived failures they find there must mean the church is not true. I wish to examine the assumptions made by those who criticize church leaders - or any leaders for that matter – that we find in our history books.

Mistaken Assumption #1 – The prophets are perfect men
Mistaken Assumption #2 – Leaders of the church receive revelation that keeps them from making mistakes
Mistaken Assumption #3 – The Church is Hiding Something
Mistaken Assumption #4 – Historical Figures in Church and Government “Should Have Known Better”
Mistaken Assumption #5 – Histories are Histories and Facts are Facts
Mistaken Assumption #6 – Being Offended Justifies Radical Decisions

The Right and Wrong Way to Separate Ourselves from the World

I once thought of the state of Utah as the largest bubble ever created in this country. I wish to apologize to the state of Utah for that. It’s not that I was in error; what I said was accurate. But generally, if you accuse someone of living in a bubble, there is a negative connotation to the accusation, suggesting you are out of touch with the real world. But there is nothing wrong with living in a bubble. It is a good separation from the outside world.
Having said that, there are also bad separations from neighbors and other church members – some of which are now being caused by politics. We need to keep the negativity of politics out of our relationships and out of our homes.

Again, if you are interested in where the Evolution vs. Creationist debate stands today, listen in.

What did we do to deserve COVID-19?

Upon the foundation that we were sent to earth to have experiences, make decisions, and learn wisdom, we are now ready to build an understanding of COVID-19. The earth was meant to be a place that challenges us at every turn. To bring out the best in us, or the worst in us, earth life had to put us under… stress. We were given bodies that need to be sheltered and fed almost continuously. We must provide for our families and ourselves every single day - whether we are hunter-gatherers, farmers, or office workers. We must do all that in the face of droughts, famine, sickness, and layoffs.

But some challenges to our well-being cannot be overcome by the increase of our personal wisdom alone. These dangers are so severe and complicated that it takes all of mankind to address them. Disease is the best example of an earthly challenge that we had to solve in a very large and long-term group effort. Due to medical breakthroughs, we are infinitely more prepared to fight this virus than were past generations. We should be very thankful for that. The diseases of earth continue to afflict us, but, because of mankind’s success over past outbreaks, we are prepared to fight new diseases today. This is not ironic; this is the way it was meant to be.

For more information on this topic, please visit my website at scottrfrazer.com. To make comments or ask questions, please email me at scottrfrazer@gmail.com.

If interested in more detail, this topic is more fully reviewed in the book Angry with God – Understanding the Rules of Earth Life, by Scott R.
