S02e100 is here and I’m sad but proud to say that it’s the last one of the season, where we get a little retrospective and take a look back at what’s been and maybe what’s still ahead. They kick things off with the chit chats before getting into some clips from early in the season, then from the future, then as per chosen by the interns. They do some exit interviews to get a sense of everyone’s time in the chairs and pick favorite guest episodes before sharing what they learned through Lasers and going over some stats for the season. They talk the point of Lasers and how to drop gems without even trying before guessing guests and being honest with one another about their experience recording the show. Episode 6 introduces our first guest of season 2 - writer/podcast host/content creator Chris Masson from WatchMojo. They kick off the episode with a lil bit of the esoteric with Chris sharing stories from growing up with a mom who dabbles p heavily in the zodiac and contrasting that to other relationships in his life. The Lasers introduce a new season 2 game where they make the guest draw a self-portrait during an increasingly personal Q&A and Chris talks an ageing parent, going from art to art-ish, and which sin best applies. They talk personas in art and taking one’s self serious vs one’s art serious and whether REM, Live and Tragically Hip are the same band (Chris argues no, Mike is unfamiliar). They workshop some content ideas (Drakespeare vs Shakespeare comes out looking ok) and talk why men seek out wood in all forms, stylistic devices in writing and chip flavours. To close out, Chris performs a piece from his past just a little begrudgingly as per Jay’s request.

Jay explains the cause for his raspy voice and Mike and Jay tell rabbit stories, each one sadder than the last. Mike brings up Sean Penn’s new book and the Lasers laugh at his horrible writing, ridden with ridiculous alliteration that proves he’s insane. They close out the episode with talk on the legalization of weed, whether it can make you go crazy (lol), and why some people can’t handle the stuff and then freestyle an ad for their instagram (go follow!).

In episode 4 the Lasers enter the Danger Dome if danger was answering timed questions and the dome was a podcast. We find out each Laser’s take on important questions such as white people with dreadlocks, penis colour in porn, saucy vs dry-rub, dinner party etiquette, whether pumpkin pie is for old people, which colour wine is best, whether it’s ok that some rappers wear fake jewelry, sharing your bed with dogs and such and the relevance of the Junos. In and around the game, discussion proceeds at a normal, sometimes feverish, rarely sluggish pace. Jay recalls an awkward encounter between his arms and an older woman before the Lasers discuss comedians of yore-ish and dope film directors. Jay concludes that the History Channel targets racists and the Lasers discuss herstory and how much good stuff the world has missed out on due to misogyny (thanks for nothing misogyny!). Mike shares 70 through 61 on his best rappers of all time list and they examine why Canada is so good at indie rock and syphilis in the prairies.

They critique theme songs that Jay made for season 2 that don’t make the grade and argue about how uncomfortable you need to be in a cabin for it to fulfill cabin requirements. They discuss Diddy on Drink Champs where he made Fab (-O-L-O-U-S) and Jadakiss uncomfy and the circumstances under which they would grave rob. Jay tells a story of a job interview gone bad, the Lasers bring back Johnny Blaze apparel and discuss the likelihood that they were conceived near fire/hot tubs. They talk muz-ACK and Mike blows Akil’s mind/breaks his heart when he reveals that Bob Marley’s dad was white. Jay thinks bidets are a status symbol and reveals that he has never encountered a double sink bathroom...no but ever.

A fight breaks out outside the studio and Akil uses Mike’s lyrics to frame him for a domestic, before telling of how he once used pee as a weapon. Toronto’s Caribana is covered and 1967 is explored.

In episode 20 of Lasers on the Ride the Lasers welcome Montreal rap producer 80 Rock to the mezzanine. Conversation kicks off with talk of 80’s removal of the American flag from his much loved Polo garb collection and the gang briefly speak politics and chicken wing spots. 80 talks his production process and the crew discuss city birds vs suburb birds before Mike paints a vivid picture using latinos camping. Ken vs Ryu comes back around as does “forget it, pick a record!” and the crew discusses the traps inherent to sampling reggae and then the intricacies of russian funk. 80 Rock gives us some insight into his background and the dudes dive in and wade chest deep in 80s rock. The conversation winds down with Mike calling The Game a 2 X bitch for getting a butterfly face tattoo and then changing it ‘pon getting clowned and finally rapper J Red stops by to discuss hot yoga.

On episode 16 of Lasers on the Ride the guys are joined by rapper/battle rapper/producer Loe Pesci. First Akil and Loes discuss Leslie Jones/SNL/the Ghostbusters reboot before Loes speaks rather disparagingly on Mother Theresa. Jay attempts to live vicariously through Loes’ graffiti bombing past and Loes wonders if Lil’ Wayne is the most improved rapper of all time (he is, though alternates are provided). The whole crew wax nostalgic on No Limit Records. St Henri hero Louis Cyr is discussed though there is definite confusion as to who exactly he is. Akil and Loes discuss the joys and complexities of sampling. Mike shows everyone how Frank Ocean was foreshadowing in his rhymes and Loes gives his thoughts as to DJ Khaled and why he’s ultimately good for mankind. To close out, the gang find out the origins of the name “Hindu Kush”, Loes’ group with Sam Osa.

Mike establishes that he does not get down with Johnny Cash no how no way and the Lasers explore microphone techniques and develop what they call “the carabiner”. Buckle your seatbelts nerds because Akil and Shogun talk Batman vs Superman, Akil says “do you know your DC lore tho?” and the roof caves in (not really). Mike tells of his twitteractions with the president of Adult Swim who is actually its Creative Director and how they just can’t agree. Things kick off with Jay suggesting a way of giving back to the community that naturally involves penis before discussion shifts to the much-maligned “dress code” rules of the early and mid aughts. Shogun teases Akil with the idea of “Marvel Comics”-centric episode of Lasers and Mike reveals his thoughts on the Rza and Vancouver. Shogun speaks on the hidden racial attitudes in the city before metro stations are pitted against one another and Mike attempts to prepare the guys for an eventual zombie apocalypse. To wrap it up the Lasers tackle guns, violence, the consequences of said violence, and why “Braveheart” is trash.

Mike tells the story of Mason, a gator killing kid with flawed estimation skills, which sets off a flurry of guestimates. KC finishes up the episode with what KC does best: wordplay.

In episode 11, part 2 in the “Break-Ups to Wake-Ups” series, the Lasers begin by recalling tour stories, most gross, few not. KC returns, Akil hands out snacks and laughs and chew sounds abound. Akil really gets to the heart of the matter of his relationship (pun intended) and asks for advice. Mike gets to the heart of whales (pun intended, dude loves whales) and the Lasers talk whale babies and then later birds. Akil and Mike agree that Donald Sterling wasn’t really even as racist as they’d expect him to be and Mike tells a K-OS story. Akil returns to the scene of the crime of his heartbreak and the Lasers bear witness to his pain in a haha way.

S01E10 - Stop Collaborate and Listen (Vol. 1)

In episode 10 of Lasers on the Ride, the first of three in the “Break-Ups to Wake-Ups” series, Mike recalls how the Knicks disrespected Phife with a t-shirt and the Lasers discuss Popeye and whether spinach was just drugs. Akil discusses his idea for a Montreal-centric tv show called “Frontreal” and wonders whether his twitter presence is too negative before Mike gets negative about microwaving fish. Mike finally addresses Akil’s hate-on for fellow producers and Akil gives us some insight into what’s really going on in there. An incredibly confident Akil launches the idea for a Lasers-only “Rhythm Roulette”, presumably forgetting that they had already planned on doing one, and Mike and Jay discuss happy accidents during freestyles.

Mike then also shares his philosophy on Ls and how important it is to gracefully take those suckers in life. Lil Dicky is broached, the Lasers share their thoughts and Mike his disdain. They discuss Khaled, Nardwuar, and Khaled on Nardwuar. They go deeeeeep into beat talk, discuss the Black Keys and establish their best era, and Mike gives up on Jay-Z. The Lasers finish off by talking grooming and swap war stories, most of them involving penises, and Mike shares his philosophy on life, which is basically just sitting in that “stuff”.

Jay pushes the boundaries of the mile high club and KC recounts the summer he spent at the Jersey Shore house right before it became famous. To finish it off the Lasers talk baseball, the exploits of Ricky Henderson and whether Tim Raines was a jerk or not.

S01E06 - Live from the Temple of Ash Ra

In episode 6 of Lasers on the Ride Akil goes full curmudgeon and the guys welcome extended member of the Lasers, fellow Montreal rapper and old friend KC. First, Action Bronson producers are dissected and then pitted against one another (Akil gives Harry Fraud the business and Mike laughs). Next, the Lasers talk pubic hair and their respective preferences in that regard, with Akil taking a strong stand on the matter and then making a shocking reveal. Mike and KC broach the oft-disputed topic of organized religion and then KC reveals the psalms of Ash Ra, which are bonkers crazy. The Lasers move on to lady noses and allegiances are claimed. Akil gets angry again, first at thirst-traps and then at jars. Mike goes deep into his childhood to touch on what everyone is dying to know, his thoughts on broken telephone, and finally Jay reveals his hangover regimen.

Speaking of the elderly (jk jk), Def Squad members are discussed, Mike puts Akil onto Hurricane G and Jay wonders about Erick Sermon’s brush with a window. The Lasers move on to such hot topics as club etiquette (fingers in the face is a no-no) and mumblerap and its founding father (none other than 50 Cent, they posit). The subject of durags emerges, specifically as durags relate to Memphis Bleek but then also to everyone else. Captain America is painted as hero by Akil, villain by Jay, and as a possible and probable racist by Mike. Speaking of probable racists (Clint Eastwood – jk jk), Akil does a mean spaghetti western whistle. Finally, as the conversation winds down, Mike claims to enunciate but clearly doesn’t.

The Lasers attempt to track down oft-forgotten early nineties icon Jamal from Ghost Writer, while Jay and Mike tackle the subject of hunting animals with the aid of drones and how nature can fight back (drone spirit!). Lastly a near-death Dave Brubeck leads the Lasers on a walk straight into the grave from either an elevator or just some good cookies.

S01E01 - Feministic

In this episode, the dudes from Lasers on the Ride discuss a series of topics, ranging from what exactly constitutes a freestyle nowadays to Brampton Ontario to porn company office dynamics (no Jim and Pam here). The matter of prostitutes arises, more specifically whether a man who frequents a prostitute can do so of sane mind and whether a woman can choose to prostitute herself of free and healthy spirit. Mike attempts to lead Akil to feminism and you decide whether it worked (it didn’t). The topic of why one artist might not support another artist is broached and two theories emerge, along with a bottomless pit of 'nahmeans' into which we fall. Jay poses what Mike concludes to be the hardest, most probing question of all time, and the name Jeremy Roenick is defamed, as it should be.
