We had a chance to catch up with Mike Noordzy from Mothguts and Cody McCorry from We Used to Cut the Grass to talk about this upcoming show. The two of them collaborated on two sound pieces that set the tone for our discussion. While what they performed is not what they will be playing at the show, Mike and Cody are two truly inspired and creative people who represent the best of Asbury Park!

MOTHGUTS

Mothguts is a New Jersey–based instrumental quartet known for smashing together the worlds of death metal, free jazz, grunge, grindcore, noise, and sludge into a relentless sonic assault. Founded in 2005, the band has carved out a reputation for fearless experimentation, chaotic energy, and a sound that refuses to be contained by genre.

The lineup features Mike Noordzy on bass, Ben Ross on drums, Anthony Ware on alto saxophone, and Chris Welcome on guitar. Together, they’ve cultivated a brutal yet boundary-defying aesthetic, marked by blistering improvisation and crushing heaviness.

Now celebrating their 20th anniversary, Mothguts remains a singular force in the underground, revered for their uncompromising creativity and blistering live shows. Two decades in, the band continues to blur boundaries and challenge listeners with music that is as punishing as it is visionary.

WE USED TO CUT THE GRASS

We Used to Cut the Grass is a shapeshifting experimental ensemble led by composer/bassist Cody McCorry, most frequently appearing as a 10-piece band known for heavy brass and two tightly synchronized drum kits. Heavily inspired by the likes of Frank Zappa, John Zorn and Sun Ra, the band has roots in the blurred zone between progressive rock and jazz fusion, but has since stretched further into post-rock and experimental endeavors, reaching from orchestral/chamber works to absurdist sound collage. The group’s sophomore album, “We Used to Cut the Grass #2,” is the follow up to their similarly self-titled album released in 2022. It has been described by math rock periodical Fecking Bahamas as “a much needed joyride.” On the album and its composer, Prog Critique has this to say: “I don’t know if he’s a genius or a brilliant madman… [the album] surprises, it disorients, as much as it captivates… have we ever seen a band cover such a rich palette?”

MONO MEANS ONE

Mono Means One is a psychedelic prog trio and the brainchild of bassist and composer John Ferrara, best known as the bass player and co-founder of the acclaimed world fusion band “Consider the Source.” Mono Means One’s sound contains melancholic melodies, rich sonic textures with Drum ‘N’ Bass grooves and Mathrock sensibilities. Half composed and half improvised, the music is often dark, with moments of calm serenity and other times heavy, oscillating between chill grooves to almost unbearable intensity. Originally composed entirely on the bass guitar, John paired up with Rob Madore (Drums) and Isaac Young (Keys) to add intensely nuanced beats with futuristic colorful sonic textures. All three members produce a sound that is powerful and unique all to their own.

Ferrara has been dubbed the “Unsung Genius” of bass tapping by bass sensation Charles Berthoud, is a teacher at Scotts Bass Lessons, and has been featured in Bass Magazine, NoTreble, Bass Musician magazine among many other publications.

Lightning in a Bottle – A Love Letter to Asbury Lanes is a raw, intimate, and unfiltered photographic chronicle of one of New Jersey’s most beloved underground venues. Shot over 11 years by photographer Mike McLaughlin, the book captures the heart and soul of Asbury Lanes, in the heart of Asbury Park—a vintage bowling alley turned DIY music venue—before its redevelopment in 2015.

We had the opportunity to talk long-distance with Mike McLaughlin, a fantastic photographer with a catalog of images documenting "The Old" Asbury Lanes. Home to the party faithful and wayward souls, Asbury Lanes was, for a time, the coolest place to both play and spectate. Asbury Park's version of Max's Kansas City and CBGBs, The Lanes was a safe place for those who needed safe spaces to dance, sing, and create.

Mike talked about his start in photography and his time at Asbury Lanes. And like everything else in life, he talked about when it was time to move on, and somehow land in Italy.

Beyond the Tide: The Erik Mason Band’s Coastal Sound

Erik Mason and his band brought “coastal soft rock” to life in this episode—cinematic indie with ‘70s roots and a hint of pink-sky Americana. Jon Caspi and the First Gun - New Music from Old Friends [Episode 208]

Jon Caspi and the First Gun have been gracing the Asbury Park (and local area) with their homegrown rock and roll. The band, made of the nicest fellows, came into the Asbury Park Vibes studio for an intimate three-song set. They also stuck around to chat about their new EP, AIRPORT PLAZA.

Caspi has been a longstanding figure in the NJ indie, singer/songwriter, alternative, and punk scenes. In the late 80s, he fronted the new wave band Bouncing Off Bob, which charted on the national college radio CMJ Top 100. He started as a solo artist in the early 2000s with the release of three albums, which received national radio play, and one was converted into a musical theater production with sold-out shows. His song This Town, about the town of Keyport, NJ, became a town “hit,” resulting in the local diner naming a sandwich after him, called “The Caspi Special.”

A compelling live artist and storyteller, Caspi, performs both with band and solo acoustic and has shared the stage with acts such as Bruce Springsteen, The Psychedelic Furs, The Gaslight Anthem, Glenn Tillbrook (Squeeze), The Smithereens, ~X~, Dramarama, Willie Nile, Jeffrey Gaines, Jesse Malin, The Dickies, Adolescents, The Wallflowers, The Alarm, & many more.

We were already looking forward to our sit-down with The Band Palm, but the episode turned out to be so much more than we imagined. From stories about cool great-grandmothers, grandmothers and parents ... to the many interpretations of their band name, to the raw honesty of their lyricism and the undeniable synergy between members, every moment felt fresh and genuine. Ronny Day is an old-school throwback from the punk heyday of Long Branch and The Brighton Bar. Most would know Ronny from starting the moshpit. Now he has finally taken his place on the stage - and although you won't find me in the mosh pit (any more), I'm right there in spirit!

Here, Ronny talks about the band, how it came to be, and where he feels it could go. Additionally, we get a little peek into Ronny's stories of his many treks across North America.

We had a fantastic digital sit-down with Above the Moon, where we dove into their music, their journey, and all the exciting things happening in their world right now. Their latest project, There Is No Arrival Vol. 1 and 2, is a collection of songs written over the last two years that explore the idea of living in the here and now—because that’s all we really have. Volume 1 recently dropped on March 27 which can be heard here. The entire project is completely DIY. The band wrote, recorded, and produced all music at their home base, Bottle Hill Recording, in Madison, NJ.

Doug and Diane recently got to fulfill their dream of interviewing a legendary musician as they sat down and chatted with Burton Cummings … vocalist, keyboardist, and primary songwriter for the chart-topping ’60s/’70s rock band – The Guess Who! A gifted and prolific songwriter and musician, Cummings crafted massive hit singles like "American Woman," "These Eyes," "Laughing," and many more—songs that have stood the test of time and continue to resonate across generations.

Cummings embarked on a very fruitful solo career following his tenure with the band and is now currently on his solo 60th Anniversary Hits Tour. The tour started last year and will span a large portion of 2025 – stopping in Red Bank, NJ on March 18th at the Basie Center for the Arts.

With over thirty (30) – yes, you heard that correctly – thirty albums and dozens of Top 10 hits, we realized immediately that Burton is living his absolute best life and has no intention of slowing down. Filled with joy from playing with his band of 20+ years and by the positive reactions he receives daily from his fans, the Canadian musician promises there is much more music to come.

The Discovery Orchestra and MORE Opera Proudly Present “Discover Angelitos Negros” [Episode 189]

Doug & Diane recently had the opportunity to chat with George Marriner Maull (Founder & Artistic Director of The Discovery Orchestra) and Vocalist Cheryl Warfield (Founder of Manhattan Opera Repertory Ensemble or MORE) about their upcoming concert, Discover Angelitos Negros (Little Black Angels). Maull and Warfield – along with Composer & Pianist Patricio Molina – will present this special Black History Month concert at 3pm on Sunday, February 23rd at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey.

During our conversation we touched upon the importance of bringing classical and operatic music into the spotlight and connecting new audiences to these genres through the innovative and immersive techniques spearheaded by their respective organizations. Maull’s and Warfield’s passion for music is contagious and their drive to make it accessible and more familiar is brilliant. We learned all about their musical backgrounds and experiences which have led them both to their careers.

Angelitos Negros is a concert series launched in 2021 by MORE Opera to collectively serve Black and Latino communities severely impacted by the pandemic. The program was based on a poignant moment in the 1948 Mexican film of the same name in which a young child asks why there are no paintings by the great masters of Black angels. An acclaimed second iteration of Angelitos Negros was presented in December 2023, with composer-pianist Patricio Molina as musical director. The upcoming concert will feature a rousing rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson song known today as the Black National Anthem, in honor of its 125th anniversary; and a Discovery Concert exploration of “Hay una Antilla en Medio del Mar Caribe,” the traditional Dominican poem set to music, arranged by Molina.

TDO is known for its teaching Discovery Concerts™ — musical performances featuring an interactive exploration segment that helps participants focus on specific details of the work — on stage and on the small screen. The Orchestra also presents community engagement programs in collaboration with its educational partners for underserved audiences in six New Jersey counties.

One hour just didn’t seem long enough to chat with accomplished drummer, touring musician, author, teacher, percussion coach and session player - Rich Scannella. A friend of Diane’s from their high school band and orchestra ... they recently re-connected at Musikfest where Rich was performing with the band Tonic.

During our conversation, Rich shared stories, advice, and lessons he learned from his experiences and journey as a full-time musician. The list of bands he’s played with is long and distinguished but if we must name just a few, how about Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Lady Gaga, Tonic, Brian Fallon, Nicole Atkins, Gary US Bonds, Debbie Harry, John Eddie, and so many more! Rich has toured all over the world, played the biggest stages, worked with dozens of famous producers, teaches at Rider University, and wrote a book called Ghost Notes which takes a deep dive into the many behind-the-scenes' stories he has!

When you listen to this podcast you’ll realize that the key to Rich Scannella’s continued success is built upon more than just his amazing talent. He credits the genuine habits of hard work, punctuality, being a consummate professional, and adapting to each situation as fundamental to making his mark on the industry. He is truly a chameleon who adapts and applies himself to any situation, and all musicians would benefit greatly from listening to his perspective and insight!

Rich will be on tour in January with Tonic playing on the Rock Boat out of Miami to South America. He'll also be playing the Montage Mountainfest Outdoor Winter Music Festival on Saturday March 1st with Better Than Ezra. Summer dates will be announced soon.

In APV’s latest podcast, we connected with Jennie Wasserman (producer at NJPAC) and spoken word poet Myster-E (AKA Eric Shandroff) to chat all about North To Shore’s Asbury Park Showcase event. This special performance takes place at the Grand Arcade in historic Convention Hall on Friday, June 14th starting at 3:30pm. The show will feature local musicians and spoken word poets – all who were selected through a competitive application process by Asbury Park arts and culture leaders to represent the city in this free, public performance for the North to Shore Festival.

Jennie took us “behind the scenes” by talking all about her work within NJPAC and how she's using her experience and knowledge to assist with the North To Shore Festival. Eric fascinated us by sharing his unique background in the world of edutainment and the many ways he works to educate and entertain children. HOLLOW HEROES: FILLING THE VOID WITH QUALITY ROCK [EPISODE 181]

The NJ rock band – Hollow Heroes – stopped by APV’s Studio recently to chat about their music, the history of the band, and their plans for the future. Founded in January 2020 by guitarist CJ Palmisano and vocalist Alex White, the group expanded to a four-piece in 2022 with the addition of drummer Tom Riccoboni and bassist James Romano. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Rise Against and Silverstein ... Hollow Heroes has crafted a signature sound with their instrumental blend of rock and punk, accentuated by the rich textures and power of White’s vocals.

The group wowed our studio audience with an outstanding acoustic set that featured their singles “Save Me” and “Feel My Pain” which you can listen to below.

The band is stoked to release their new album Another Deadbeat Summer on June 14th with a record release party planned for July 12th at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park! During our conversation we talked all about the new album, the band’s performances this year in SXSW, their history together, as well as the band’s future plans. It was equal part inspiration and motivation during our latest podcast with Jersey Shore's spoken word poet and hip-hop artist, Chris Rockwell. Living by the motto "You have to be amazing!" is what drives this young artist to not only relentlessly perfect his crafts, but then take them one step further to make a difference in the world. He believes wholeheartedly that “attraction, not promotion” is what connects you to the people you need to know and then shows you the ways to be more impactful.

Whether it’s highlighting the poetry of writers in his publication Soup Can Magazine, organizing cultural events, writing & recording music, or going on tour with the Chris Rock Collective, it’s apparent that the words “take it easy” aren’t part of Chris’ vocabulary. In addition to touching upon all of that, Chris spoke at length about his upcoming event CANDEMONIUM for which he won a grant through the North To Shore Festival. It takes place on June 23 at 1pm at Sister Jean’s Kitchen in Atlantic City and will showcase southern New Jersey’s most talented spoken word artists and hip-hop stars! This event is also a chance to give back to the community. CANDEMONIUM will serve as a community food drive, collecting canned goods and food donations for Sister Jean’s Kitchen in Atlantic City. So, bring your generous spirit and make a difference!

We had the utmost pleasure of speaking recently with marketing professional and entrepreneur Melissa Peterson about her brand-new venture called Divvy Music. Having worked for years with emerging artists, Melissa wants to level the playing field by providing a cutting-edge music streaming service that prioritizes indie music and connects those artists with a genuine fanbase. Concrete revenue streams, individualized attention, and sustainability are at its core and the intent of the service is to complement, not compete with, current streaming services.

Just last week, Divvy Music launched its Kickstarter campaign seeking funds to launch the beta app by the end of the year. APV’s “mascot band” Supermutt recently stopped by our studio again (YAY!) for a chat about their latest single, “Friends in My Head,” along with a buncha other stuff! This Jersey City rock band is a standout favorite all over the State of NJ due to their infectious energy, compelling performances, and downright excellent rock and roll.

Mike, Tommy, and Billy spoke at length (and without regrets 😉) about how they became Supermutt, their close brotherly bond, overcoming a significant health event as a band, and of course their brand-new, kick-a$$ single “Friends in My Head!”

Rêverie: The Transcendence of Arena Rock [EPISODE 169]

The classic rock-inspired outfit Rêverie recently took some time to chat with us from a recording studio in Boston. The band consists of Alec Demello (vocals), Liv Barcohana (bass), Gilliam Robles (piano/vocals), Victor Echaniz (drums), Christian Mangiameli (guitar), and Michael Forry (guitar) who met through, and are all currently attending Berklee College of Music.

Christian and Victor spoke about the spectrum of influences driving the creation of their arena-rock sound with many compliments being paid to Alec who has the innate ability to channel the energy and wide-reaching registers of the likes of David Lee Roth in his heyday. Also paying homage to the incredible talent of their other bandmates during our conversation, the entire group seems equally dedicated to making Rêverie a success. Their exploration and progressive take on the classic rock genre - along with each member's stellar musicianship -sets this band apart from the others.

What a treat it was to recently sit down and chat with Roy Palijaro from Fulfill Food Bank and Colton Braun of the band - The Break Plans! Both of them are gearing up for the Annual Fulfill Food Bank Benefit Concert at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park this Friday, December 1st! Roy took the time to talk about all of the existing programs at Fulfill and how they were developed to assist families get back on their feet in many different ways. Colton shared why local bands feel so strongly about giving back and using their music to bring attention to the needs in our community. With everything Fulfill is trying to accomplish ... the phrase "It takes a village" is especially applicable.

To kick off the holidays and jump start the season of giving, five bands including Alexander Simone & the WHODAT? Live Crew, The Break Plans, Jake Thistle, Jarod Clemons and EZ Eddie will be performing on December 1st to raise much-needed funds for Fulfill. Special events such as surprise band collaborations, an ugly sweater contest (with prizes!), and photos with the artists will make this event extra special. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are still available at the Stone Pony Box Office and Ticketmaster.

Smack dab in the middle of his first headlining tour across the U.S., Joe carved some time out of his busy schedule to talk about his music which is an addicting combination of reggae, rock, pop, and soulful punk! So many things are taking off for this blossoming artist. In addition to headlining, he has just released a brand-new video for his song “Losing It” with The Elovaters … friends who he’s played with on many occasions in the past.

With his roots deeply planted in New Hampshire, Joe credits time spent in Key West as formative to building his presence and refining his sound; however much of his conversation was centered on his love for his family. What comes through clearly when you talk with him is his gratitude, love, and joy for his wife, baby, touring crew, and current musical situation. None of this is lost on him which is why he puts every ounce of energy and passion into every performance.

I recently had the opportunity to have a great conversation with David Cacciatore and Tom Losito of The DT’s. The power-pop/rock & bluesy duo has played together for some time but established themselves officially as The DT’s in early 2022.

Fresh off the release of their latest single “All In My Head,” it’s apparent that there’s a synergy and kismet to the fact that these two musicians were destined to make music together. Take away the fact that they could easily pass as close brothers who finish each other’s sentences, have a similar sense of humor, and blend their vocal harmonies seamlessly. But they both play several instruments, are equals in the songwriting process, and take their variety of musical influences to create a sound that is altogether there’s … and there’s alone.

If you lived in North Jersey in the late 1980s, you would have come across the band The Selves. The band, started by Mike Reilly on vocals and guitar, eventually grew with Paul Fisher - on guitar, Steve Raimo - on drums, and Mike Santoro - on bass, with John Raso as their manager.

Hoboken, New Brunswick, Haledon, New York, and a few trips across the country - they played hundreds of shows over almost ten years.

Here, The Selves are together for the first time in six years and the first time putting their band's history in one long line.

The Asbury Park Porchfest is in its seventh year of bringing together community residents and musicians to celebrate the universal language of music! And it's all free!

During this podcast we spoke with Jordan Modell (Founder & Organizer of the event), Tim Cabrey (a supporter of live music and homeowner who is donating his porch), and Alexander Simone (a local musician who will be performing during Porchfest). During our podcast Sean spoke all about his supporting band – The Boardwalk Fire – and the process they go through when creating their music. Although each band member has made their way to different parts of the globe, the group came together to produce this labor of love. It’s a bittersweet moment in Sean’s career. The album promises to be his most prolific and sonically progressive work yet; however, he has decided to make the trek to Nashville and plans to perform extensively throughout the fall and winter as a solo act.

Sean graciously performed acoustically for us, giving us a premiere performance of the soon-to-be-released single “Hail The Carpenter.” His lyrical storytelling coupled with the mesmerizing melody and his smoky vocals make this an exquisite tune that deserves to be on every music lover’s playlist! Yes – it is hard to explain – but over the three days of Labor Day weekend 2023, Fern’s parent’s yard will be transformed into a battlefield of wits and brawn, skill and luck, with a lot of music.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the NJ alt-rock band – Above The Moon – recently! It happened to be on the night Asbury Park had a torrential rainstorm that closed roads and wreaked havoc on all drivers at that time! Despite that challenge, vocalist Kate and bassist Kyle (who happen to be brother and sister) made it to the studio; and we were able to remotely connect with guitarist Shawn and drummer John to chat about their new album Mine Again!

Mine Again is the band’s first full-length album following several EPs and singles within their discography. Recorded in a home studio and engineered and produced by Shawn, the masterpiece demonstrates a progressive level of maturity and evolution from this extremely talented group who has been together for seven years. Their style incorporates rock, shoegaze, pop, and Indie singer/songwriter elements that set them apart in a very distinct way.

Our conversation touched upon their experiences in the studio while recording, the growing synergy within the group, and all the influences that play a part in their musical creation. Relocating to Asbury Park, NJ … Meagan decided to embrace who she was meant to be and opened up Over The Moon Art Studios, an artist’s collective that welcomes all types of creatives into its fold.

Resident artists share the space as the studio provides art education classes for all ages. Meagan has also embraced the music community here by providing a space for shows and performances. And one of her big upcoming events is the Moonlight Art Show on July 22nd at 7pm. All works of art will be in Black and White. Vendors and music will make this a very unique event!

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down to talk with Tom Donovan, Executive Director of the Asbury Park Music Foundation.

Tom explained what it was like transitioning from running a large international newspaper to taking on the challenges of making sure that music was a priority for the City of Asbury Park. He discussed the Foundation's relationship with Asbury Park and the struggles of keeping a nonprofit both successful and viable; but was especially passionate when we dove deep down into the importance of music education. The Foundation drives itself to provide programs that support underserved youth through programs like the Lakehouse Music Academy Scholarships, Hope Academy, the Hip Hop Institute, After School Programs, the Asbury Park Summer Music Camp, the Hip Hop Music Camp, and the Latino Experience Music Camp. We also took some time to talk about the area's music history, and how music did indeed save Asbury Park.

We chatted about his childhood, his varied musical talents, the bands he regularly plays in, and the people who make up his inner circle. In fact, friendships and family are what sustain Cranston on a daily basis, and in all of his musical endeavors.

Cranston's most recent creation is his 6th studio album, Northern Town, which will be released on May 11th. Recorded in analog in his parent’s home alongside his very best friends … this album is filled with creativity, love, personal stories and many special moments. And that voice! There isn’t enough one can say about the richness and texture of Cranston’s vocals. To understand exactly what I mean, listen to his first released single from the album - “The Root.”

Quite possibly the nicest guys I’ve ever met … the dudes from the NJ band Wake Up Paradise stopped by the APV Studio recently for a podcast and acoustic session. Tim Montalvo (vocals), Roger Wuy (drums), Sal Brisindi (guitar), Dann Aquino (guitar) and Max Orozco (bass) spent the better part of an hour chatting about their influences, process for creating their music, being a DIY musician as well as being parents to their children and pets!

This alt-rock band has been creating catchy, “knock it out of the ballpark” singles since 2013 but are currently picking up speed and ready to release a bopper of a single, “Ready Now," of which we got to hear during their performance! Although the guys admitted this was their first acoustic session, they crafted beautifully mellow renditions of “Satellites” and “Ready Now,” … so good in fact, that those versions deserve to be separate recordings that stand on their own!

The NYC funky glam-rock band - Tony & The Kiki - stopped by our Asbury Park Studio recently to chat and play an acoustic set in front of our first live studio audience.

Tony Alfaro (vocals), Rodney Bush (keys), and Junior Pauls (guitar) shared stories about their musical beginnings, how the band came together, the meaning behind their band name, and all about their creative process.

On Saturday, March 25th, Tony & The Kiki Will be making their Asbury Park debut headlining at Trinity Church. The show is a benefit for The VNA Trans Wellness Center and is being presented by The Light Brigade Collective. Doors open at 5pm and tickets are first come, first serve on the day of the show.

Formed in 2018 and before their first album was even released, these crazy-talented musicians were asked to join the biggest tour of last summer ... The Stadium Tour with Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts! Their music has been labeled “the future of rock n’ roll;” and Derek Day (vocals), Chuck McKissock (drums), Dane Pieper (guitar), Griffin Tucker (guitar), and Franco Gravante (bass) have been dubbed “hard rock’s new elite.”

We got the chance yesterday to chat with Derek and Chuck where we found out what it was like for them to collaborate with Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe) and Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) on two of their singles, what it’s like to play in huge stadiums, how the flame for music was ignited in them as kids, and how surprises feed their creativity when writing music. Classless Act is currently releasing five (5) acoustic versions of their Welcome To The Show singles, of which the final will be shared on December 16th.

CHATTING WITH NATALIE FARRELL & LOU PANICO [EPISODE 118]

We were thrilled to recently have Asbury Park dynamo musicians Natalie Farrell and Lou Panico in our studio for our latest podcast. They are an incredible team as husband and wife as well as collaborators in songwriting and scoring; however they are successful independent artists in their own right.

Natalie's discography includes an EP, a live album, and five singles ... the latest stellar tune titled, "Fake Authenticity." She dove into the meaning and inspiration for this new music which is fascinating and well worth the listen. Natalie's hope for "Fake Authenticity" to help others navigate the negative web of social media that sucks us all in and sometimes influences our emotions and actions.

Fresh off a dynamite performance opening for Morningside Lane at Asbury Lanes, Natalie is currently prepping for her first "Rave" headlining show at The House of Independents on September 2 alongside pals Blaise, Dano, and Taylor Tote! Tickets can be purchased here.

During our podcast, Lou also touched upon his extensive touring experience with former band SOCRATIC (Drive-Thru Records) and sharing the stage with acts such as Bleachers, The All American Rejects, The Early November, Incubus, and Mumford & Sons. There is a very good chance you have heard John Ginty's Hammond B3 organ and never knew it was him. He is a member of The Allman Betts Band and has toured, and recorded with The Chicks, Citizen Cope, Robert Randolph, Santana, Jewel, The Wu-Tang Clan, Redman, and Neal Casal.

John not only is a top-notch keyboardist but is also a percussionist, music director, producer, arranger, songwriter, conductor, mixer, and, engineer.

John is a truly talented musician, originally from New Jersey, and now a resident of Florida. In my opinion, he is the epitome of cool and was really fun to chat with.

Renaissance Blvd is a Philadelphia/South Jersey-based cover band with a very distinct WOW FACTOR. With literally hundreds of songs in their repertoire, this dynamic group plays completely different sets every show with the goal of giving the audience the best night of their lives. Asbury Park vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Sean Tobin stopped by the APV Studio recently to chat about his brand-new album “Ghost of the Arcade” which was released today, June 10th! This extremely talented artist, along with his band The Boardwalk Fire, are local favorites here who leave dedicated fans in the wake of every show that they play. Their signature Americana/Folk-Rock sound and lyrical storytelling will transport and elevate you to a higher plane.

“Ghost of the Arcade” is the band’s sophomore album and its songs display Sean’s magnificent growth as a lyricist and musician who dug deep within himself to produce his most authentic sound. After receiving advice to “stop trying to write cool,” Sean discovered that his most unique gift is as a storyteller who is able to uplift his stories with brilliant music.

During our discussion Sean gives insight and background on some of the album's singles - "Quiet Boy" and "Ghost Of The Arcade," and plays my favorite tune "The Corner Of Sunset." We also visited topics like the importance of living in the present moment, following your true path, and everything that goes into the creation and promotion of an album.

My conversation with the multi-faceted, progressive musician Brian Erickson was interesting on so many levels because we not only spoke about the multitude of projects on his musical resumé (past and present), but we also took a deep dive into the process and beliefs that drive his creativity.

Brian did not start playing or writing music until his college years when he first picked up a guitar. He found early success with his first band, The Paper Jets, and before the art of podcasting was the force that it is today, Brian and a buddy began The Great Albums Podcast (which has been downloaded over three million times and reached #1 on iTunes’ Top Music Podcasts Chart)!

Since then, Brian has continued his musical journey as lead vocalist/guitarist of the popular band The Extensions, who are creating new music at a frenetic pace. They recently participated in Mint 400 Records’ Zoe’s Project, a compilation of previously unreleased music to raise awareness and funds for victims of domestic abuse. On June 10th, the group plans to release their new single “With a K” ... an upbeat, dance-worthy tune which promises to be on everyone’s summer playlist. And The Extensions’ have even more exciting news with the promise of an upcoming DOUBLE album release!

As if this weren’t enough, Brian is also a solo artist, the YouTube TV Show Host of “One More with Brian Erickson,” a music reviewer and show promoter. You might guess that all those accomplishments are based upon a tenacious quest for success; however, Brian is mostly driven by the happiness and joy he gets from the creative process. He places high value on doing what has never been done before; a philosophy celebrated in Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” … a perspective which is the main characteristic of the true creative.

Kenny Dubman knows all about the impact of music and its effect on the human psyche. In 2016, after a musical hiatus, he came upon Blackberry Smoke’s album The Whippoorwill, which he says, “changed the trajectory of my life.” The inspiration and excitement he felt from that compilation gave him the confidence and vision to embark on a solo career which produced his debut album, Reckless Abandon.

Since then, the lyrics and music come at a fast and furious pace; to the point where he feels like a conduit of creative energy from somewhere outside himself. The result of that creative nirvana is his upcoming album, Conflicted, a Southern Rock/Americana masterpiece which features collaborations with Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne), and Scotti Hill (Skid Row). Already-released singles include “Modern Day Jesus” and “Old Dog” which exude over-the-top energy and passion in both musicality and lyricism. Even though they experienced an extremely difficult year in their personal lives, they've made a commitment to make an impactful difference in the lives of others. In memory of their lost family members who instilled in them their love of music ... Mike, Billy, Tommy, Josh and Kyle have kicked off the Super Sounds Charity in conjunction with the JDJ Charitable Foundation.

Their initial goal is to raise funds to purchase headphones for pediatric patients going through cancer treatment at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia). The hope is to connect these youngsters with the healing power and impact of music during their hospital time. The funds may also be used for musical instruments, concert tickets and live music performances!

Supermutt isn't new to fundraising initiatives. They've led and contributed to ventures like 12 Days Of Covers, Rocktoberfeast, and several benefits for Grace Community Services in Jersey City, NJ.

Growing up in a household that immersed him in everything from jazz, country, R&B, show tunes and opera ... he eventually gravitated to piano and was classically trained at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Rob honed his craft and has been a tried-and-true veteran of the New York City music scene for 30 years. He has performed and recorded with Jesse Malin, Charli XCX, The Black Crowes, Colin Hay, Tom Jones, Alejandro Escovedo, John Popper (Blues Traveler), and Little Steven Van Zandt among others. He also composes and scores for film, TV, and marketing campaigns through his company Radcat Productions.

Most recently, Rob has poured his heart and soul into his first solo EP Split Second Meltdown, an incredible alt-rock project featuring his songwriting, vocals, keys, lead guitar, and production. Our conversation dove into why Rob felt he needed to share these songs, the intricacies that go into writing and performing music, and what type of album he may do next. In 2020, Time Magazine listed Paula’s HBO special, Cats, Cops and Stuff as one of "The 5 Funniest Stand-Up Specials Ever."

She is an author, actor, interviewer, commentator and hosts the weekly comedy podcast “Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone” which has just posted its 188th episode! How she found time to chat with us ... we'll never know! But our delightful - and very funny - conversation is well worth a listen.

Benton Jr. (drums) and Jon Nadel (bass).

Marbin's catalog ranges from progressive jazz, to rock, to gypsy jazz - all instrumental. They played a few years back at the legendary Asbury Park club, The Saint. The crowd was treated to a lesson on both musical, artistic and, technical skills.

The new album. is named, Fernweh, which is all gypsy jazz covers of gypsy jazz and mainstream jazz standards.

If you’ve ever watched the singing competition television series, “THE VOICE,” then at some point you’ve seen the judges (who listen to contestants sing without seeing them) turn their chairs after hearing a performer sing just one note. That was the jolt I felt when I heard the first vocal in the new single “I’m Fine” by the Clifton, NJ rock-rap-punk band - ToyMachine! The tune is a perfect blend of hard rock and rap, with an incredibly catchy chorus sung by a frontman who very honestly admits, “I didn’t like music very much at all growing up.”

Enter the New Jersey synth-pop band, DUMMY. The group, formed in 2019, recently released their first single “Suddenly” which has already racked up 51,800 streams on Spotify ... a count that’s increasing every day. What’s the allure, you ask?

Ben Nelson (vocals / bass), Jeff Fetzko (Guitar), Carlee Ahart (Guitar, Vocals), Matt Nace (Keys), and Cris Nace (Drums) have found a way to take the new wave sound of the 1970’s and 80’s and put a modern, energetic, pop-punk stamp on it that will transport my “seasoned generation” right back to that timeframe making you feel like you’ve dipped yourself in magic waters. After moving to New York City in the late eighties, Jack quickly established himself as one of the city’s top bassists. In 1993, he auditioned with about twenty of New York’s top players for Lenny Kravitz’s Universal Love Tour. That was the easy part. After the audition Jack and another hopeful were flown to L.A. to compete in an open, radio-fueled audition that involved 250 more contenders. Jack nailed that audition, and spent nearly 15 years as Lenny’s bassist of choice on world tours, tv appearances, videos, CD’s and DVD’s.

Perhaps a redemption, or more of a realization, Jack Pitzer has moved from sleeping in the band van to owning a home with his lovely wife and loyal dog Scout. He has rubbed elbows or did the sound for some famous bands. He has toured both Europe and the United States.

Caroline Davidson is a poet and musician who has been pumping out some gorgeous, haunting singles – most recently “Tightrope” and “Doomed Cities” - under the name Ghost Harbor Music. She is also the founder of Ghost Harbor Creative, a multi-disciplinary art space right here in Asbury Park … which I’m sure she’ll tell us more about in a little while.

Kimmi Heart is the dynamic, energetic, in-your-face frontwomen of the NJ rock band Reality Suite. RS has a lot of incredible music in their fast-growing catalog including the albums Awaken, Skinn, and Cut, Burn Bruise and the band is currently promoting their new single “Triggers” which has been climbing the charts.

Sara Bruno is the lead singer of the newly formed NJ band – Fool Saint - – who dub themselves “The female fronted, five-piece Progressive/ Dream-Rock band your mom warned you about.”

APV recently had the opportunity to review the first two single releases from Killin Me Kid’s debut album Slightly Confused and Vaguely Amused. If you had the chance to read our review, then you know we love these guys. With the release of the album being March 5th, we were eager to get the chance to speak with them and we’re glad that we did.

Over the hour plus long conversation, we really got to learn a lot about Killin Me Kid. We received a history lesson on how the band formed and how it has morphed. We learned about their influences and what triggered their love of music. We learned why not to run a lawnmower indoors and how “being artistic” can explain anything. A great rock band with a great rock record that’s ready to roll.

Jeff Howard grew up loving music and much of his spare time during his college years was spent hanging out in the CT music scene, especially the punk-rock and emo clubs. “I loved bands like New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World, Saves the Day. I loved them back then and still love them to this day,” said Howard during a recent interview.

Spending time raising a family has kept Howard busy and happy for many years, but he always had an itch to embrace his passion for music, more than just attending concerts. And when the pandemic kept everyone home this past year, he decided to set a goal for himself to learn something new. And that goal was to play an instrument … the ukulele.

The money raised will go to Grace Community Services in Downtown Jersey City, a non-profit organization committed to community outreach with senior and youth programs, along with providing meals to those experiencing food insecurity.

The virtual music fundraiser will feature many NJ bands who will be performing covers of holiday songs for you to enjoy while also having the opportunity to donate to this worthy cause. The performances will be posted on social media from 12/14 to 12/25 on various pages using #12DaysOfCoversNJ.

Every music lover has a handful of “holy crap, they’re awesome!” moments they can readily recall when they heard a band for the first time and immediately fell in love with the sound. One of my moments was the first time I heard “Ain’t So Kind” by the band, Supermutt.

Formerly a cover band and pretty new to producing original music, Supermutt is Billy (Vocals), Tommy (Lead Guitar), Mike (Bass Guitar), Matt (Percussion), and Josh (Rhythm Guitar). They have three standout rock and roll singles with four more on the way; and if I’m being completely honest, I cannot wait to hear them.

Well, Kelli has an impressive combination of musical talents- singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist; all of which she uses regularly to create new music, entertain fans, and share with those in need. Philadelphia rock band Soraia has been steadfastly making a name for themselves in the rock/alt rock/garage rock genre … garnering awards, recognition, and commendations from not only fans but industry influencers as well. They have created four albums: In the Valley of Love and Guns(2013), Soraia Lives! (2014), Dead Reckoning(2017), and Dig Your Roots, recently released on March 13, 2020. On that same day, all live shows came abruptly to a halt; a tough blow to any band anxious to promote and share their newest material with fans. Lead vocalist ZouZou Mansour, though, has chosen to focus on the positives and took some time to talk with me about her bandmates, the stories behind her new songs, and the very special relationship she has with her fans.

If there ever were musicians who were meant to be together, it’s the four talented humans who are in the band, ABOVE THE MOON. Kate Griffin (vocals/rhythm guitar), Shawn Murphy (lead guitar), Chris Mangin (bass), and John Gramuglia (percussion) take creativity and collaboration to a new level and do it with equal parts of respect, admiration and friendship. As Kate states, “I think what helped is that John and Shawn have this friendship that was based in a different place. Chris and I had a deep friendship and then Shawn and I became very good friends. So, I think when you get everyone in the room together, this is very much a friend situation, which is nice.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - NAC ... EYES ON THE PRIZE AND FEET ON THE GROUND

Rapper and hip-hop artist, NAC, is all about the plan. At age twenty-four, the Brick, NJ native is successfully building and managing his budding music career in addition to a busy full-time job. He creates his music in a studio he built himself (complete with full soundproofing and a recording booth). When asked how he balances it all, NAC said, "With balancing everything, basically … there’s no sleep. Sleep is just not there anymore. I get off of work, maybe eat something, and then come down to the studio, and go straight to working on something. I don't like the idea of wasting time.”

The Bradley Beach (NJ) natives are laid back, honest, and genuine; which is so refreshing in a social media-soaked world where many try to put up a rehearsed “front.” And their music is a perfect extension of that cool cat vibe with an alternative rock/psychedelic sound that’s as mesmerizing as it is fresh and new.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - THE INFECTIOUS MELODIES OF DENTIST

Dentist is a three-piece band from the Asbury Park, NJ area. Despite being just three members, Emily Bornemann (Vocals, Bass), Justin Bornemann (Guitar), and Matt Hockenjos (Drums) make a big sound. Reminiscent of your favorite surf-rock bands, they also bring their fair share of pop and punk ethos to each song. Emily’s gentle vocals pull you into the song and entice the listener to lean forward and listen closely, while the band's fine musicianship begs you to grab a friend and dance. This is a band with a future. With national touring experience, we do not doubt that once we are all virus-free, Dentist will be back on the road with new songs, enticing lyrics, and infectious melodies.

THE MUSICAL LANDSCAPE OF THE WELL WISH

THE WELL WISH has made some changes recently ... and their trajectory seems destined for magnificent heights. Brimming with enthusiasm, husband and wife team Anya and Patrick Angeloni (vocals and guitar, respectively) shared that they have solidified a new band lineup and that they feel the sky’s the limit. Rounding out the group is EJ Luna (Drums and Percussion), Rebekah Stickler (Violin), and Prash Singh (Bass). The band was really starting to pick up steam and they felt especially optimistic after their March 8, 2020 performance in New York where they received very positive feedback.
