Gender Equality Progress

In our first episode (around a year and a half ago) we talked about what it's like to be a woman working in the UK water sector. With a significant amount of time having passed, we ask whether progress is being made on gender equality.

Sarah McMath (CEO, MOSL) and Anna Kummelstedt (British Water) join to give their perspectives from senior leadership and new joiner / young professional standpoints, respectively.

Sarah also tell us about the plans that Women in Water have to make the upcoming IWA Congress in Glasgow, the most inclusive conference experience ever for women attending.

Beneath The Surface

Through powerful stories and real-life examples, Beneath The Surface highlights EDI topics in the water sector, sharing personal experiences and best practices that inspire change. It brings attention to the voices of under-represented groups, with a focus on attracting diverse talent and fostering a culture of inclusion.

By connecting senior leaders and rising professionals from different backgrounds, it creates a space where ideas flourish, synergies are built, and the industry moves closer to becoming a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all.

Beneath The Surface is co-hosted by British Water's CEO, Lila Thompson, and Perminder Atwal, HR Business Partner, Xylem UK & Ireland.

Podcast Co-host- Lila Thompson, British Water, CEO

Lila is responsible for British Water’s strategic direction, representing the interests of UK water and wastewater supply chain companies together with wider stakeholders across the sector, through the UK, Technical and International forums. The Water Industry Forum provides challenge-led, independent thought leadership, to tackle the challenges facing the sector. Lila was formerly responsible for British Water’s international services and led business development visits to a range of markets including Saudi Arabia, Libya, Morocco, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, China, and India. Lila has over 20 years of experience driving business growth, policy development, and stakeholder engagement in a variety of sectors.

Podcast Co-host- Perminder Atwal, HR Business Partner, Xylem UK & Ireland

With 18 years of HR experience spanning manufacturing, engineering, logistics, and now the water industry, Perminder has developed a deep understanding of business and strategy, and her journey has also highlighted the critical role of company culture and psychological safety in driving engagement, business success, innovation, and development. Perminder is passionate about ensuring the accessibility of clean water for all. A trip to India in her early years revealed the harsh reality of limited and unclean water resources, particularly impacting children, which was heartbreaking.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the USA Water Sector

What we call EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) here in the UK, is more commonly known as DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) in the States. In the current political climate in America, DEI is under pressure. Yet the water sector has many projects in place aiming to increase diversity in an effort to secure the workforce of the future that it needs. So, what is the current situation? And how do the challenges, opportunities and state-to-state contexts differ on the other side of the Atlantic.

Are there things we can learn from the US situation? Are there different approaches to bigger picture patterns such as AI and climate change?

Karen Frost is Executive Director at The Water Council, which is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin... but operates across the US and globally too. The Water Council is a similar "hub" sector organisation to British Water, so Karen is perfectly placed to give valuable insights and analysis.

Anna Kummestedt (a young professional and recent joiner at British Water) stands in for usual co-host Perminder Atwal for this episode. Anna joined the conversation from a conference so there is some background noise on her contributions.

Male Allyship

Lee Chambers is the CEO of Male Allies UK. Lee was awarded the Freedom of the City of London for services to equality in business and outstanding contribution to gender equity at work, as well as being the 2023 UN Women Changemaker of the Year for his work on male allyship and gender equity.

In this fascinating interview with hosts Lila and Perminder, Lee explains how allyship is something that can make a huge difference to individuals and organisations alike. It starts with curiosity and a desire to embrace difference as opposed to feeling threatened by it.

Topics included in this episode include:

How male allyship can benefit both men and women

How so many business terms (like "soft skills") are actually problematic language in terms of equality and gender bias

Why the power of the social media algorithm can lead to us being more closed off (and how to challenge this)

The effect that "the world we grew up in" has on our attitudes and behaviours without us realising

A debate on the value of targets and quotas in progressing diversity

How groups that often get banded together as one unit (e.g middle-aged men) can have vast differences within them

Why well-intentioned EDI campaigns can land badly at different levels of organisations

Speaking Up

A key part of making progress on EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) is speaking up when something is wrong. Bad behaviour, prejudice and negative workplace culture has to be called out in order for it to be sorted out. But, it's hard to do.

Being part of a network can help. You realise you are not alone and can call on the support and experience of others to raise issues, encourage change... and perhaps even empower you to make a move to another role or organisation where you can feel at home, valued and do your best work.

In this episode Jo Butlin - who has tackled inequality and misogyny in her own career - joins hosts Lila and Perminder to give valuable advice to people on both sides of the speaking-up process. As an employee, how can you speak up and make sure your voice is heard so that unhelpful behaviours and attitudes are addressed? As a manager, what should you do when someone in your team speaks up to you?

Plus, Jo reflects on the progress of the network she leads and co-founded - The WUN. In only 7 years it has assembled over 80 industry partners and more than 10,000 members, giving it real strength and influence. It exists to give women the confidence and skills they need to build lasting, fulfilling career in the utilities sector. What progress has been made and what else needs to be done?

If you want to find out more about the Womens Utilities Network, just visit:

thewun.co.uk

Young People Entering the Water Sector: Their Real Experiences

The UK water sector needs to - and is actively trying to - recruit and retain more young people, more women and more people from diverse backgrounds. But what is the experience from the other side? What's it like for the people the water sector would love to recruit and retain? Do they feel attracted to the industry? Do they find entering it easy? What about when they start work - do they feel welcome and comfortable? Can they see themselves building a happy and successful career? Or do they face barriers and challenges?

There's no better way to find out than to actually ask real people for their lived experiences, views and opinions... so that's what we do in this episode. We speak to two young people - one (Malak) who is in her first year working in the water sector and the other (Saad) who is trying to get his first job in the sector.

What follows is a fascinating conversation that reveals plenty of challenges, opportunities and insights that are like gold-dust to anyone involved in the effort to recruit - and support the careers of - the future young, diverse and gender-balanced workforce the water sector needs.

Plus if you are someone who wants to get a job in the water sector, or you have new hires in your team... there is a whole lot of valuable knowledge in this episode.

Malak Huseynli is a Process Commissioning Engineer at Evoqua Water Technologies / Xylem UK and you can find her on LinkedIn here.

Saad Qazi is actively looking for a role in the UK water sector.
Neurodiversity: An Opportunity to Improve and Benefit

Simon Frampton is Resourcing Manager at YTL UK, the group that owns Wessex Water. Simon first became interested in neurodiversity after meeting an individual with autism who inspired him. That experience led him to begin to champion neurodiversity in his own workplace and then in the wider sector.

Simon believes that more should be done to make the workplace more accessible and welcoming for neurodivergent people and that by doing so, the water sector can harness a vast untapped resource at a time when increased recruitment of skilled people is vital.

In this fascinating discussion with hosts Lila Thompson (CEO, British Water) and Perminder Atwal (HR Business Partner at Xylem UK), Simon talks about how applying for jobs can be like cracking a code for those with neurodiversity. He also gives practical advice for senior leaders on how to improve recruitment and management processes.

Simon also brings to life the scale of the challenge. People with autism, for example, are at a massive statistical disadvantage when it comes to applying for jobs, getting them and then being able to thrive once in position. This episode also busts myths and shares hope for what an improved sector - with greater opportunities for neurodiverse people - could look like.

Happy and Productive Careers for All? Career Management and EDI

Everyone should have equal opportunity to build a happy and productive career in the water industry. But people at all levels will talk about having problems at one time or another. Career management is a skill that the individual can learn and improve... but the sector need to play its part in creating a welcoming, accessible environment with equal opportunities to progress.

In this episode, our discussion around EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) is framed within the context of Career Management. How can individuals discover what they are good at, then find (or create) the roles that enable them to shine? What can companies and senior leaders do to make sure that recruitment and internal promotions, structures and processes don't fall back into outdated and unequal ways.

Joining Lila today is someone who is hugely well known in the industry, in part due to the huge success of the water and environment podcast she hosts - Planet Possible.

Niki Roach started her career on the Yorkshire Water graduate training scheme. After 13 years there, she took the decision to seek out new horizons. Since then she has travelled, set up her own photography business, started her own water and environment consultancy and, of course, launched and grown Planet Possible.

Niki's is a hugely varied and successful career. But she has faced challenges including anxiety, sexism in the boardroom, being out of work and struggling to find a role that would fit her family commitments. She has overcome all these challenges with a creative and proactive approach. She shares key insights during this episode - making it a hugely useful listen for anyone at any level in the water sector.
