Voltron: Cubes of Olkarion, developed by Switzerland-based independent game studio, Gbanga, was the winning game coming out of the 2018 Universal GameDev Challenge. The game demonstrated the most potential for expansion into a commercial product and beat hundreds of other submissions to win the competition.

In case you’re not already aware, the Universal GameDev Challenge was a collaboration between Universal Games and Unity Technologies and sponsored by Intel and Microsoft, that invited developers to submit a design for a PC game that leveraged one of five iconic Universal brands: Back to the Future, Jaws, Battlestar Galactica, DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender and Turok Son of Stone. Nearly 550 entries were submitted worldwide. As the grand prize winner, Gbanga received $150,000 and a year-long consulting contract with Universal Games and Digital Platforms for Voltron: Cubes of Olkarion.

Voltron: Cubes of Olkarion is a one-on-one, real-time-strategy game boiled down to a single sideview screen, with fighting and puzzler game elements. The action-packed title is based on an episode in the Netflix original series DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender, where the Olkari people were forced to build a single gigantic cube superweapon that tried to destroy Voltron. In the game, both sides build single weapon cubes – the so-called Cubes of Olkarion – and stack them to towers in the middle. Each cube has different attack and defense abilities. Some of these cubes can launch projectiles, others are placed for defense, others can spawn units that attack the opponent.

This was the first EVER convention dedicated solely to Voltron, in honor of the 35th Anniversary of the first episode of Voltron: Defender of the Universe on TV on September 10, 1984.

Marc and Greg were happy to kick off the festivities even before the opening ceremonies with a Voltron 101 Panel. Our friend, Dani DeWald was so gracious and recorded the whole panel and posted it on YouTube! Go check it out HERE!

After the opening ceremonies, kicked off by VoltCon Organizers Kevin Clark, Patrick and Savannah O'Connor and Ryan Howe, Franklin Cofod (Showrunner/Director for Voltron: Defender of the universe) took the panel stage for an interview, moderated by Patrick.

After that, Marc and Greg took the stage again for the History of Voltron Toys panel.

Following Marc and Greg were Bob Koplar and Jeremy Corray to talk about Voltron Force. This panel answered a lot of fan questions about why Voltron Force did not get a second season, and Voltron fans were told what the future of the Voltron franchise might be.

There were many great vendors in the "Space Mall", including the Voltron Store, and many great cosplayers, wearing many original character designs from their favorite Voltron series.

In our Retro Voltron segment, Greg reviews another episode that celebrated a holiday in the original series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the 67th episode, Doom Girls on the Prowl.

Here is a summary of that episode and some screenshots:

Haggar tries to send a baby Ro-beast after Queen Merla, but Merla's pet buzzard catches it. Haggar apologizes, and offers to help Merla conquer Arus. Meanwhile, on Arus, there is a parade taking place honoring the planet's leaders. Merla's forces attack. Keith and Allura try to get the villagers to safety, while Lance, Hunk, and Pidge race to get to their lions. In protecting the villagers, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge get zapped with a freeze ray, and their lions are sent over a cliff, and to the bottom of a canyon. After getting the villagers to the castle, Haggar makes her baby Ro-beast turn into a full sized one, and sicks it on the castle. With the other three frozen, Keith and Allura have to face the monster by themselves. At the end, all of the Voltron Force has statues made of them by the kids they had saved earlier in the episode, and King Alfor's ghost shows his approval of Keith.

Princess Allura is preparing for her coronation as the rest of the Voltron Force looks on. After Nanny insults them, the guys decide to check the monitor to see if there is any trouble. They discover that Pidge's home planet, Balto, is under attack by Zarkon's forces. Pidge said that his family was moving to a new planet, but he is not sure if they made it out in time. Keith, Lance, Pidge, and Hunk decide to head for Balto, but are cut off by the castle guards. Coran tells them that they must stay and protect planet Arus. He tries to place them under house arrest, but the Space Explorers quickly subdue the guards and head for Balto. Once there, they are confronted by Lotor and a new Ro-Beast. Back on Arus, Allura receives a telepathic distress message from Keith. She must now decide whether to stay and protect her planet, or to go and help her friends.

Dana, who lives in Tennessee, recently had lost all of her possessions in a fire at her family's home. This was a devastating loss for Dana. Here are some pictures of the house after the fire and the area that used to be Dana's bedroom:

Dana's best friend, Rye, who lives in South Carolina, knew that Dana had lost a lot of personal items with sentimental value, including a lot of art, signed posters and other special items she had bought at various conventions that Rye and Dana attended together over the years. One item, in particular, was a Voltron poster that Dana had signed by many of the voice actors and crew from Voltron Legendary Defender that she had collected at several conventions. Rye, without Dana knowing, had reached out to us on Twitter DM and asked if there was any way to connect with DreamWorks Animation to see if there was a way to get something signed and sent to Dana.

We contacted Seth Fowler at DreamWorks PR, letting him know about the fire that destroyed Dana's signed poster, and asked if they could help Rye get something signed for her friend, Dana. It just so happened that THAT very night, the DreamWorks Animation group had planned a cast and crew party to celebrate the final season of Voltron Legendary Defender.

Within a week, a signed poster of the combined lithographs of all the Voltron Legendary Defender characters, which was signed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Lauren Montgomery, Josh Keaton, Kimberly Brooks, Neil Kaplan, AJ LoCascio, and more of the cast and crew that were at the party that night, was on its way to Dana's boyfriend's house, where Dana was staying. Rye had given the address to Seth so it would be a surprise to Dana.

Jason Sperling, Chief Creative Development for RPA, talks about how the Voltron Happy Honda Days ad came together, how the idea of using nostalgic toys to sell cars came to be, and what other things RPA has been involved with. One special thing that RPA is proud to be a part of, is the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and they have been trying to help provide more resources for kids who have been diagnosed with brain tumors. RPA partnered with 23 animation studios, to create 23 different animated short films around each topic related to pediatric brain tumors. We want to Congratulate Gbanga, a mixed reality game design studio in Zurich, Switzerland, for winning the grand prize of $150,000 and a year-long consulting contract with Universal for Universal and Unity's GameDev Challenge. Gbanga created a game called Voltron: Cubes of Olkarion. They beat out 550 entries! DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender Executive Producer Lauren Montgomery was one of the judges.

RetroCon takes place in the fall in Oaks, PA, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center every year, thanks to the organizers and founders, Rose and Tony Tuski (far left, kneeling, above picture), and a slew of volunteers. Thanks to Rose and Tony, who invited special guests, BJ Ward and Garry Chalk, we now have a couple interviews with voice actors from 3 previous Voltron series, prior to Voltron Legendary Defender, which makes this whole podcast a Retro Voltron segment!

BJ Ward, who has a 40-year career in voice acting, opera singing, and children's book writing (Farty Marty), is best known for her roles as Scarlet from G.I. Joe, Allura and Haggar from Voltron: Defender of the Universe, and Velma from Scooby-Doo, among hundreds more.

Garry Chalk, who has just as long a career as BJ, in both live-action and animated series and movies, is best known as Optimus Prime and Optimus Primal in Transformers: Cybertron and Transformers: Beast Wars, and also as Insp. Andrew Pawlachuk in Cold Squad, and Man at Arms in Masters of the Universe (He-Man), but we remember his roles as Sky Marshall Wade and Manset from Voltron Force the best.

We are very honored to have been able to have spent some time with both BJ Ward and Garry Chalk to talk about their amazing careers, and to hang out with other Voltron fans while we enjoyed RetroCon weekend in Oaks, PA.

Pixel Dan, another guest of Rose and Tony, has reviewed lots of Voltron toys on his YouTube Channel. We were happy to meet him at RetroCon!

On Saturday, we had a blast hanging out with Mel (@melmeiko), who we met for the first time, even though she's been on the podcast a few times.

And, on Sunday, we hung out with Windy C. (@windsweptzariel), another fan we've known from social media and the podcast, but had never physically met before.

We also met Nicole Schatten for the first time, whom we've known as a big Voltron fan from Facebook.

There were also lots of Voltron merchandise for sale by vendors at RetroCon, and Marc picked up a Trendmasters Cyber Sentinel Voltron for $5, and a Trendmasters Allura figure from Voltron: The Third Dimension, which he had signed by BJ Ward.

Greg picked up the Holy Grail of 2 scripts signed by the cast of the original Voltron series, personally donated by Neil Ross (Keith/Pidge) for charity. He also had BJ Ward's book, Farty Marty, signed by the author herself!

Overall, RetroCon was a ton of fun! We didn't win any of the raffle prizes that were given away both days, but there were some cool Voltron prizes available!

The winner of the adult costume contest at RetroCon was Quicksilver, the leader of the Silverhawks from the cartoon of the same name. Here he is, pictured, below:

We got a little choked up watching it, because it has meant so much to us that Josh Keaton is our Shiro and our Space Dad, and he is going to miss recording Shiro and going out to promote the show as much as we've enjoyed watching the show and meeting him at the cons. We are so happy to have good friends Tara and Dani joining us to recap everything that happened at New York Comic Con (NYCC) 2018! It was a BLAST!

We are so happy to have shared the final con panel for Voltron Legendary Defender with everybody in New York! We want to thank Mark Daniel, the Pre-Show Host for the Hammerstein Ballroom panel for Voltron, for asking Marc up on stage to help play a game with 3 special fans who were brought up on stage as well.

We also want to thank Joaquim Dos Santos, Lauren Montgomery, Josh Hamilton, Jeremy Shada, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Kimberly Brooks and Josh Keaton for an incredible panel and Fandom Feud session on the show floor in the Javits Center!
