"An Interview with Charles Adams"

Charles Adams is the head coach of the North Minneapolis Community High School football team and director of team security for the Minnesota Twins. In 2016, his North High Polars became the first Minneapolis public school to win a state championship since 1976, with Adams becoming the state's first Black coach to achieve the honor. Adams spent twenty years with the Minneapolis Police Department, retiring after Minneapolis Public Schools ended its contract with MPD and eliminated Adams's position as a school resource officer. His story has been featured on HBO's Real Sports, in the New York Times, on National Public Radio, and in Showtime's four-part miniseries, Boys in Blue. He lives just north of Minneapolis.

The Goals not Guns campaign is a first of its kind collaboration between Face to Face Academy, St. Paul’s Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS), and the non-profit Elpis Enterprises dedicated to ending youth homelessness. The purpose is to raise awareness about gun violence and generate positive ways to address this epidemic. Students were tasked with creating a slogan and matching a design that shifts the narrative to "goals" not "guns." One slogan/design would then be selected to be featured on a T-shirt sold nationwide.

Out of an astonishing 42 designs submitted (half of the student population), four finalists were chosen: Tyrone Butler (Senior), Vita Lowe (Senior), Angelo Walker (Senior), and Jada Walker (Junior). At a special Assembly attended by the Minnesota Association of Charter Schools, the Office of Neighborhood Safety, Elpis, the University of St. Thomas, the entire Face to Face Academy student body, and featuring guest speaker, Mayor Melvin Carter, the winner of the campaign was announced.

Face to Face Academy is pleased to offer to the public the 1st place T-shirt: “Goals Up, Guns Down” created by Angelo Walker.

We are so proud of everyone in our school community for showcasing their courage and creativity during this campaign. A special thanks to Academy teachers Jennifer Plum & Lucy Voller, Lynnaia Jacobsen (ONS), and Paul Ramsour (Elpis) for spearheading this incredible initiative.

As we mark the two-year anniversary of the senseless shooting of our beloved Graduate, Lavonte Baymon-Love, The Face to Face Academy Podcast Network presents the rerelease of a special episode that was Part 2 of a 3-Part series on the devastating impact of gun violence on our communities. Each episode chronicled the stories of students and parents grappling with unimaginable grief, loss, and fear that the specter of gun violence casts upon their daily lives. Within those shared experiences of pain emerged glimmers of hope of how we may move forward together.

The 3-Part series was a build up to the dedication of a Memorial Garden on August 30th, 2022 that will remain a permanent fixture in the Academy’s Outdoor Space. The Memorial Garden was designed by school students, staff, and community members as a quiet and peaceful place to reflect and honor loved ones that have been lost too soon. It is a reminder that their impact and spirit remain a part of each and every one of us long after their passing from this Earth.

The Love from Lavonte Fund
The Love from Lavonte Fund's purpose is to address the barriers and obstacles that prevent our most vulnerable youth from attending and thriving in school. Resources from this fund will assist with supplies, transportation, meals, clothing, and other life necessities allowing at-risk students to increase their time and focus on attendance, school work, and their path toward graduation. The Fund is in honor of Lavonte Baymon-Love who believed in the power of education and always gave a part of himself with the intent of making someone else's future a little brighter. "Joining the Military"

Face to Face students are currently reading August Wilson's play FENCES and are going to do a series of podcast episodes answering some of the main questions the play explores. For example, what defines a good parent and when do you know you're ready to parent? And, what are the pros and cons of going to college, into the military, or focusing on getting a job after high school? August Wilson lived in St. Paul from 1978-1990 and wrote this award-winning play while living here. Although he grew up in Pittsburgh, May 27th was named August Wilson Day in Minnesota because he's the only person living here to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He also was involved with the Science Museum of MN and the Penumbra Theater Company while he lived here. He was seen as a regular walker through the Selby-Dale neighborhood and his insightful words continue to be enjoyed and studied by many. He passed away in Seattle in October of 2005.

The Passing of Queen Elizabeth

She was the mother of Prince Charles, heir to the throne, as well as the grandmother of Princes William and Harry.

Queen Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, at age 96.

Each episode chronicles the stories of students and parents as they grapple with unimaginable grief, loss, and fear that the specter of gun violence casts upon their daily lives. Within these shared experiences of pain emerges glimmers of hope of how we may move forward together.

The Podcasts are a build up to the dedication of a Memorial Garden on Tuesday, August 30th that will remain a permanent fixture in the Academy’s Outdoor Space. The Memorial Garden is designed by school students, staff, and community members as a quiet and peaceful place to reflect and honor loved ones that have been lost too soon. It is a reminder that their impact and spirit remain a part of each and every one of us long after their passing from this Earth.
