AH 35 - Jason Smith

Jason Smith, aka The Flash, had dreamt of becoming a pilot all his life. Everything he did from school through to university and beyond was strictly focused on becoming a commercial pilot. He overcame any obstacle that presented itself to stop him, including laser eye surgery, only to realise, through the help of a mentor, that being a fighter pilot was not for him. He wanted to save people not hurt people. We chat to Jason this week on Awesome Humans about how you can change your direction in life at any time. We chat about love and how amazing his parents were when he came out to them. He finished a novel he started in high school at aged 26 to be published by Ocean Reeve Publishing and is now focusing on writing an epic science fantasy series. Will he let us know why he is called The Flash on this inspiring podcast? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Brett McCallum is a speaker, author, storyteller, entrepreneur, digital transformation guru, and passionate podcaster. Brett’s energy and gusto are both legendary and infectious. His authentic and relatable spirit disrupts the status quo to empower humans to make real change.

To know Brett you need to experience Brett!

AH 33 - René Michele

René Michele has overcome abuse, drug addiction, and suicide attempts to become a woman of determination and purpose. As I interview René on Awesome Humans it becomes evident that we share the same views on changing the world for the better, and how our child protection services are broken. René is a writer, entrepreneur, coach, speaker, mentor and mother driven to empower and support female survivors of childhood abuse. She has recently become the voice for Bravehearts, who work to make society safe for our kids. I am truly inspired by this woman and hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed interviewing her.

AH 31 - Linda Biumaiwai

In honour of National Reconciliation Week, Awesome Humans had the pleasure of having a yarn to the inspirational Linda Biumaiwai, who is a proud Mununjali woman from the Beaudesert area of the Yugambeh language region.

Linda has been leading the way by empowering young Indigenous Australians; she has contributed too many community programs such as the Preston Campbell Foundation, Titans for Tomorrow and Deadly Dreamers. As well as providing advice to both the Office of the Commonwealth Games and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) as a member of GOLDOC’s Indigenous Working Group, along with other Yugambeh leaders.

The first thing you’ll notice is Linda’s amazing infectious laugh – I love a good laugh, then add to that Linda’s interesting stories – it’s a cracker of a podcast enjoy!

AH 23 Steve Dart

Awesome Human this week is Steve Dart, marketing guru, DJ and sports devotee. I met Steve a few years back and his energy is awesome. Be inspired by Steve’s life story as a talented young AFL football player, then surfer, then world traveller. Knowing this, twenty years ago, Steve joined his perfect company: Red Bull - and grew his sales success within this brand’s global expansion. Today Steve uses social media to grow two businesses: the established Hard Rock Café Surfers Paradise, and the new innovative Play Hard sports equipment. I love these kinds of stories. Mix sport and marketing and I’m in my sweet spot. Did I also mention Steve Dart is a DJ with music in his DNA? Check out this Awesome Human Steve Dart on the latest episode

This weeks Awesome Human "Dares to be Different", he is one of my first bosses who has had a massive influence on my life as a young bloke and has become a good mate through the rest of my life. I think this is one of the best podcasts I have done as it flows well and is a great story. Ronnie Altit is the CEO of Insentra currently the 4th best company to work for in Australia. He is leading a revolution for entrepreneurs by actually getting off his backside and doing. He is the only qualified accountant I know with a personality (just joking) and seriously one of the best humans I know. Thank you for being who you are Ronnie and thanks for having such a massive influence in my life. Another Awesome Human, enjoy….

AH 20 Paul Holland

Paul Holland was awesome before he started racing cars. He was awesome as a cameraman for film and TV for a decade. He was awesome as a business owner and business coach, and is still awesome as a digital marketer. There were also plenty of entrepreneurial steps in between. I knew Paul as a good mate years before he started racing cars around Australia. I’m so excited to hear how that all came together for Paul when it wasn’t until his 40s he realised he had talent for driving at speed whilst dodging obstacles in all kinds of racers. He also shares his executive tip to free you from your desk. It time to hear from Awesome Human Paul Holland.

AH 18 Max Delmege

I’m a huge rugby league fan! I’m devoted to the mighty Manly Sea Eagles since I was a little fella, and it wasn’t even my family’s club! I am privileged to interview football royalty – Max Delmege who saved the Manly Sea Eagles Warringah football club from financial ruin from 2002, investing millions until a very public and ugly exit in 2010. During this golden age, the Sea Eagles climbed up from the bottom of the ladder each year to win the 2008 season after a 12 year hiatus. Join Max and I as we go back to Sydney in the 60s where this self-made businessman went to the top of real estate and then rugby league. As a former radio jockey, Max enjoys spinning a yarn and I love listening to this bloody good Aussie bloke - and in my book: an Awesome Human. Check out the episode.

AH 17 Tiah Goldstein

I’ve been using the hashtag #embracethefail on social for years because I’ve failed many times in life. It is common fact that people in business also fail a lot and grandly. That’s why I’m so pumped to hear from this week’s Awesome Human Tiah Goldstein, local ambassador of Fuckup Nights and serial entrepreneur.

Plenty of chuckles to be had as we hear Tiah talk about her new challenge from the Gold Coast Australia, and her fascinating past in Canada, Israel, South Africa and Zanzibar. You’ll see why this global citizen Tiah Goldstein believes people power can save the world.

AH 15 Greg Przybylski

Are you thinking too small with your qualification?

Sometimes you just never know where your qualification might take you in life and it may not be where you expect. For Awesome Human Greg Przybylski it was to the pinnacle of the motorboat industry and all over the world – as crew member on luxurious and powerful super yachts. Greg apprenticed as an air-conditioning refrigeration mechanic in Australia. Yes, super yachts have refrigeration and air-conditioning, so was that the link? Not quite.

Whilst Greg was travelling and working in Europe, the rite of passage for any young Australian, he got asked to repair equipment on a small motor boat about to sail from Gibraltar to Puerto Rico. The owner was impressed and convinced Greg to quit his traditional job and come across the Atlantic with three other men. That’s how Greg got his first floating job.

Now an experienced marine engineer for many types of crafts up to 84 metres and thousands of horsepower! His air-conditioning refrigeration mechanic skills gave him diversity for a workplace that takes a limited size team. Literally, every hand counts on deck.

“It was the best trade I could have possibly done. When you are working on those systems and mainly to do with the physics, you have to be an extremely good welder and solder. You have to know electrical work and circuitry. So many things that this trade set me up later on in life.”

“I could fix diesels, pumps, anything that rotated, or didn’t rotate that should – I could fix most things. I was good with my hands. I could weld the steel on boats.”

“When I first started there were no qualifications to be an engineer on a super yacht because they weren’t classified by the International Marine Organisation. As long as an insurance company would accept my qualifications I could get the job. When I wanted to climb the ladder, the Marine Merchant wanted to keep me at a class 3 but I did one boat with 12,000 horse power, 60 meters long, that could do 35 knots - that’s a lot of power. I couldn’t get yacht qualifications so I was getting commercial qualifications. I did more courses when I started doing big re-fits: marine engineering and electronics.”

Today and decades after his first yacht job, Greg is an experienced crew member for many types of craft up to 84 metres! Life is never dull when you work on the largest leisure watercraft in the world. To build one super yacht costs the same as a skyscraper like the Q1 so Greg Przybylski crewed the equivalent of a 25-story skyscraper!

Greg, after many years working as Chief & Project Engineer on the super yachts now through Australasian Yacht Services Pty Ltd provides a world-wide private consultancy and engineering project management service for owners wishing to build & maintain super yachts.

What a life! When it comes to your qualification, do you need to think bigger?

I am using Shannon’s ketogenic product with my health plan and lost 8kgs in the last 6 weeks. I’m pumped!

For over two years Shannon and his young family have travelled Australia in a caravan producing The Travelling Wellness Show hosting the likes of pro surfer Kelly Slater to Shannan Ponton coach of The Biggest Loser. Shannon is a health guru in his own right. This episode explores Shannon’s awesome life, memorable health cases, and his personal milestones, and why he ‘walked away from money.’

<itunes:summary>This week’s Awesome Human Shannon Brenton has turned his talent as a naturopath and clinical nutritionist specialising in chronic disease and human performance. He brought several health food stores and then a large complimentary facility to the Central Coast. He is also a trusted supplement developer.

This episode explores Shannon’s awesome life, memorable health cases, and his personal milestones, and why he ‘walked away from money.’</itunes:summary>

AH 13 Terry Tappa Teece

A bucket list moment can change your health and wealth long after.

On Awesome Humans podcast, Terry ‘Tappa’ Teece, Gold Coast local legend and surf commentator shares his coastal life. Tappa is good at telling a yarn. One of those personal moments for Tappa resonated with me weeks into my new healthy lifestyle.

You see, Tappa who surfs every day and contributes to his surf scene, he’s in his 50s when he wins a trip to Hawaii - in a raffle at the 2016 Byron Bay Ben Memorial Classic surf contest. Hawaii had been a huge goal for Tappa his whole life, having surfed since he was a kid. So what does he do to prepare for this surf trip of a lifetime – he quits smoking. But wait there’s more.

“That Hawaii trip was really crucial point in my life. Mate, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

Then Tappa goes to Hawaii and happens to hang a lot at North Shore where unlike other places, there is no nightlife, and he can only buy a few beers at a local supermarket. So Tappa surfs all day and at night has a few quiet coldies. It’s important to mention Tappa is also a Gold Coast event MC, and writer for the local music scene, a songwriter/musician himself. In Hawaii, Tappa gives up drinking.

“I had all this time to think and I was carrying a bit of weight from quitting smoking, and I thought, I'm just going to have a break from drinking. I haven't had a drink since I got back in February 2017. Last time I weighed myself which was over six months ago and I'd lost 15 kilos.”

Tappa admits in the interview that an unexpected positive is he used to barely pay his mortgage. Now he’s easily paying the monthly instalments and saving as well. Tappa’s tip:

“It takes six weeks until you notice a change in yourself, and it's like when you break your arm. Six weeks. You do your knee. Six weeks. Everything is six weeks, so do it for six weeks.”

It’s awesome that a lucky moment has snowballed into so much more.

AH 12 Glenn Tozer

Humble pie and politics don’t often mix but this Awesome Human owns the recipe.

This week on Awesome Humans podcast is Councillor Glenn Tozer, recently re-elected local politician of division 9 Gold Coast. I call him Captain Gold Coast because of his great passion for this great part of the world. He is a Christian family man whose wife is an awarded social documentarian. Cr Tozer and his young family are the kind of representatives that communities need to make change they value.

When I first met Glenn Tozer five years ago, I liked that he was humble enough to say he can make more difference as Councillor than as Mayor, and that sense of humbleness remains today:

“I feel it's super important to keep humble. I've got a group of really great people around me who don't let me become a dick. If you're going to stay humble, you're going to be calm, and you're going to stay centred about what's important in life.”

“I'm a big believer in the idea that the community will determine who's best for them and that's why I always fight for transparency, accountability and openness. These are things really important to our democracy and our community and I believe people will make good decisions when they are well informed.”

“The thing I'm afraid of is of us making decisions about things that are false or misleading. I think we are so afraid of failure. I'm actually not afraid of not getting the outcome if we play fair.”

“There is an element of give and take in politics. You have to make compromises but I'm not willing to compromise on the big issues.”

I agree with Cr Tozer that Gold Coast people are very focused on a fantastic quality of life. We all want to balance a strong local economy with its impacts like traffic congestion, and urban development.

As passionate basketball fans, Cr Tozer and I speculated on Australian basketball players, and echoing my former mentor, Brett Brown, coach of Philadelphia 76ers: “Trust the process”.

Aaron has worked with the World’s best across entertainment and still is. Leaving the Gold Coast at 19 to chase his dancing dreams, Aaron shares his life and his lessons:
“Fear is the biggest thing. If you can get over that fear and take a risk, it just benefits you on a cellular and a soul level more than anything else. If it doesn't go anywhere who cares? You had a crack. Big deal. Most people don't.”</itunes:summary>

AH 9 Scotty Fields

Our next guest is world-class performer and home-grown fella: singer Scotty Fields. You’d know him from the Ten Tenors.

I really connected with Scotty because we both had tough school days due to attention difficulties. We both failed high school. Now Scotty is living in LA about to live in the same burb as The Kardashians and The Biebers – what a legend of a career that’s still going! Scotty’s sung live for millions and to the world’s greatest musicians and celebrities at huge fundraising galas. These days Scotty has even managed to diversify his work so he can stay closer to his wife by flipping houses in America with a life-long Aussie mate. Awesome!

Scotty has a lot of stories to tell and one I wanted to know about was how he met the late Verne ‘Mini Me’ Troyer at several of these fund-raising galas. Hope you enjoy this Awesome Human!!
