In 2006, a violent altercation led to two incidents where Shawn says he acted in self-defense. He was arrested in Pittsburgh, extradited to New Jersey, and after losing at trial was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

While incarcerated at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, Shawn transformed his life. He deepened his faith, focused on rehabilitation, and wrote books on youth mentorship, financial literacy, motivation, spirituality, and men’s mental health, while also sharing motivational messages on social media.

After years of denied appeals, Shawn’s case was reviewed under New Jersey’s clemency initiative. Represented by Joseph Krakora, 41 years were commuted from his sentence, recognizing both his rehabilitation and evidence supporting his self-defense claim.

On December 4, 2025, Shawn was released—granted a second chance at life. Today he uses his story to mentor, motivate, and help others avoid the path he once walked.

On November 28th, 2006, my father took his own life in front of me by a self-inflicted knife wound. I was 15. He was a passionate outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and trap since he was a little kid growing up in East Rutherford. In 2017, my father’s youngest brother, John Miragliotta, attended a suicide prevention walk wearing a name tag that read “Team Buffalo.” He told me about it on my birthday that year while we were sitting by his pool and said he wanted to do something meaningful in my dad’s memory. Together we decided to create an outdoor brand — Team Buffalo Outdoors — to carry my father’s passion forward and share it with the outdoor community.

When I lost my father, all the outdoor fun and the connection with his family and friends seemed to disappear. At first, I saw TBO as a way to find my way back and reconnect with those relationships. What I didn’t expect was how many incredible people we would meet and how many new memories we would create through this community — memories that would never have existed if we hadn’t started. Through this journey, I’ve learned that getting through suffering requires releasing that energy in a positive direction, through the things you’re most passionate about. Our extended family embodies that same resilience. Our cousin Peter Miragliotta and his wife Jackie endured the devastating murder-suicide of their daughter, Michelle Sabia, in a domestic violence incident in 2016. Afterward, they adopted her three children, and Peter now serves on the board of the Center of Hope and Safety, dedicating his life to education and prevention so other families don’t have to experience that kind of loss.

Appearing on the Suffering Podcast on what would have been my father’s 67th birthday is a meaningful full-circle moment. Team Buffalo Outdoors stands as a living tribute to him and to the belief that suffering, while it leaves a permanent imprint, does not have to be the end of the story. By sharing openly, building community, and honoring those we’ve lost through action, our family continues to find purpose on the other side of pain. Our story is about transformation — choosing connection, meaning, and hope where there was once only grief, and making memories one outdoor adventure at a time.

Throughout her career, Jeanne has focused on building environments where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally, while supporting educators and staff who serve the Jefferson Township community every day.

Joining her is Bill Koch, the Athletic Director at Jefferson Township High School since 2018. Bill spent a decade teaching Physical Education and Health at Jefferson Township Middle School before moving into athletic administration, including a year as Athletic Director in Montville Township. He earned his undergraduate degree from Springfield College and a Master’s in Educational Leadership and Education from Centenary University. A lifelong coach, Bill has led cross country, wrestling, and boys lacrosse programs and remains active in youth sports. Beyond school, he is a husband to his wife Nicole and a proud father of three—Olivia, William, and Amelia. Together, Jeanne and Bill offer a unique perspective on education, leadership, athletics, and the impact schools have on the lives of students and families.

Mike Morgan is a 30 yr medically retired police officer veteran who worked for both the Atlanta & Suffolk County, NY PD's. Approximately 1 yr after retirement, Mike was watching a Shawn Ryan podcast episode featuring guest Eddie Penney, a former Navy SEAL when he realized that the feelings (Anger, rage, depression general unhappiness) he had been experiencing post retirement were some sort of PTSD that he had suffered during the course of his career.

 Mike knew he needed help but was unsure of what modality to utilize, but eventually settled on psychedelics.  After journeying with Ayahuasca in early March 2024, he transformed his life during the course of a weekend. He realized that his life's purpose was to go forth and help other first responder's/military veterans heal their PTSD and trauma issues. 

He started a podcast, The Resilient Warrior Nation to do just that, and has just completed a book, The Resilient Warrior, which is also heavily focused on childhood trauma that he believes, originally propelled him into policing as a career.

Karl Ross and his sister, Cheryl, were born at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. They

spent their early years in Kentucky until their father was discharged from the Navy, after which the

family moved to New Jersey to be closer to his mother’s side of the family. During Karl’s early

years, his parents divorced and went their separate ways. Karl was raised on welfare and food

stamps until his mother, through hard work and dedication while attending college, graduated from

Bergen Community College and secured a position with the county elections office.

In the early 1980s, Karl began coaching while also becoming involved in the fire department. During

this time, he met his wife, Nancy, at their high school while she was still a junior. Karl and Nancy

have been married for 41 years and have three children and six grandchildren.

Karl went on to serve in the fire department, retiring in 2007 after many years of service.

Throughout his fire service career, he held numerous officer positions and ultimately rose to the

rank of Chief of the Department in 1997.

Karl began coaching football at the local recreational level in 1983 and eventually served as both

head coach and president of the program for several years. During that time, he coached in 14

Super Bowls, winning eight. He later advanced to the high school level, where he coached teams to

six state sectional titles in football and baseball, winning five of them, in addition to capturing seven

league championships.

Karl retired from his professional career in 2020 after 34 years of service with the Carlstadt

Department of Public Works. In his later years, he has faced significant personal challenges,

including cancer affecting his immediate family beginning in 2014. He lost his younger sister,

Cheryl, in 2019, followed three months later by his stepfather, Richard, in August 2019. In

November 2019, his mother, Barbara, was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2021. In

December 2023, Karl himself was diagnosed with cancer and continues to battle the disease today.

Jeremy Campbell, born and raised just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a dedicated father property manager, social media influencer, youth activist, coach, and mentor whose work centers around inspiring and empowering the next generation. 

Dedicated to lifelong learning, Jeremy completed project management coursework at Villanova University in 2019 and holds certifications including Level 2 CNC Operator from Montgomery County Community College. In 2021, Jeremy founded Fast Feet, a youth sports organization that has helped hundreds of young athletes develop skill, confidence, and character across football, baseball, basketball, golf, and more. In 2024, he expanded his mission by launching Culture Collabs, a social media initiative dedicated to inspiring today’s youth through meaningful and relatable content. The platform has collaborated with professional athletes, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, law enforcement professionals, mental health advocates, and many others.

Jeremy’s personal passions—sports, coaching, cooking, art, and mentorship—reflect his belief in leading with heart. A devoted family man, outdoor enthusiast, and golfer, he finds joy in travel, nature, and quality time with loved ones. Heidi Ramsey retired after 23 years with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, serving in various operational and administrative capacities during her tenure.  During this time, she was responsible for creating SIGNAL, a preparation course for troopers seeking promotion to sergeant; the Public Safety Leadership Academy, a 10-week leadership course for mid-level police supervisors; and Ohio ASSIST, a three-day post critical incident seminar for first responders dealing with the aftermath of traumatic events.  She also held assignments at the Academy, Labor Relations, Legal Services, and Human Resources prior to her retirement in 2018. 

Currently, Mrs. Ramsey serves as an instructor at the FBI National Academy, a 10-week leadership course for law enforcement executives from around the world.  Her primary course of instruction is Leading At-Risk Employees, which provides resources and strategies for managers to deal with employees who are suffering from substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress, suicide, and depression.  She also teaches Navigating Internal Leadership Crises, which deals with strategies for managing crisis situations considering tactics, policy, communication, and wellness issues. 

Mrs. Ramsey graduated from the FBI National Academy in December 2016 and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cleveland State University, a Master of Business Administration degree from Capital University, and a Juris Doctorate degree with a concentration in Employment Law from Capital University Law School.  She is a certified attorney in the State of Ohio and resides in Manassas, Virginia with her husband, Mike, and their two dogs, Dutchess and Star.

Amy Grace, 50, is an accomplished professional and devoted mother, known for her resilience, integrity, and empathetic nature. She earned her master’s degree from Gwynedd Mercy University in 2022 and currently serves as an Assistant Vice President of Patient Access, where she applies her leadership skills to ensure patients receive the care and support they need. A single mother of two sons, she has balanced a demanding career with a deep commitment to her family. Her oldest son, Mark, will turn 30 in December, and her youngest, Grady, is 12.

In August 2023, Amy’s family faced a profound challenge when her son Mark, then serving as a police officer, was charged following a police-involved shooting. After a lengthy legal process, he was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Despite the emotional toll of this experience, Amy and her family have remained steadfast in their values and she is raising her children to be honest, compassionate, and willing to help others in need. She draws strength from her family, which includes her three sisters, and honors the memory of her late parents by living a life rooted in love and empathy.

Bill Styskal started his career in law enforcement with the Montclair Police Department in July of 1982 as a Deputy Police Officer. Bill served with the Montclair Police Department for 8 years. In 1990 Bill was hired by the Essex Fells Police Department and attended the Morris County Police Academy where he graduated from the 40th Basic Police Officers Class. Bill served 15 years with Essex Fells rising to the rank of Detective. Bill was assigned as a task force officer with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Fugitive Task Force out of Newark NJ while serving with Essex Fells. Bill later transferred to the West Caldwell Police Department where he finished his career in 2015. While with West Caldwell Police, Bill was assigned to the Essex County Bureau of Narcotics in Newark NJ. 

Throughout Bill’s career of over forty-three years, his work productivity has earned him numerous acknowledgments on his performance including awards and commendations.  He served on the West Essex Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 81 executive board for 12 years. Bill served and chaired on many committees including the scholarship committee and the golf committee. He served two terms as Recording Secretary, one term as Vice President and one term as President. He received the States highest recognition for his service, awarding him the Gold Life Membership award in 2001.

After Bill retired in 2015, he took on a new career with the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken as a campus police officer. He rose to the ranks of Detective, Sergeant and Detective Sergeant. Bill has always had the passion for helping others but more so his fellow officers. He got involved in officer resiliency and serves not only the officers of Hudson County but the State of New Jersey.  

Bill understands the importance of the role of a Resiliency Officer within law enforcement. In today’s profession, officers are not only tasked with upholding the law and protecting communities, but they are also facing increasingly complex challenges, both externally and internally. The emotional, psychological, and physical demands placed on officers can be overwhelming, and that’s why the position of Resiliency Officer is more critical now than ever.

Sheri raised in South Jersey by a single mom. Her father left the family when she was 3 and was in her life sporadically until she severed the relationship with him when she was 28. Her family has deep roots in a blue collar, Irish Catholic neighborhood in Southwest Philadelphia. Sheri’s first introduction to trauma was through a relationship she had in her 20’s. She met this man within a year of his return from the first Gulf War where he served on the ground in the Army during Desert Storm. At the time he was suffering from undiagnosed PTSD and was putting himself through art school in Philadelphia. This relationship continued for about 16 years. She was his unconditional support and he was her greatest cheerleader. The experience with him set her on the path to the work she does now. At the age of 27 Sheri enrolled in Rutgers University in Camden where she acquired a BA in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy. During her time at Rutgers she worked as a direct support professional at a Neuro Behavioral Stabilization unit with kids with Autism and other intellectual disabilities who were

exhibited severe crisis behavior. Within a year of graduating, the events of September 11 th occurred and as a result Sheri enrolled at Chestnut Hill College where she received a Master of Science in Counseling and Human Services with a concentration in Psychological Trauma. 

While completing graduate school Sheri did an internship at the sexual assault crisis center in Camden NJ and provided in home counseling to kids in crisis due to abuse, grief and sometimes a combination of both. She also worked for Children’s Mobile Response team in Camden County. In 2009 Sheri started a job as a Behavior Specialist at a school which served students who could not be were not able to be educated in their home districts. The students displayed moderate to severe behavior problems as well as a variety of intellectual, learning and mental health disabilities. While she worked there she became certified as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and remained in the position for 14 years. Sheri worked individually with students and teachers and provided professional development related to compassionate behavior management and trauma informed care. After short tenures at 2 other public schools in the same role she is taking her career in a new direction and is entering into the realm of consulting.

Brian Sizemore is a long-time employee of AT&T and is the founder of Law Enforcements United Crusade Against Suicide-The LUCAS Foundation. The foundation was formed in honor and memory of his son Lucas (an Atlanta Police Officer) who took his own life last year. The LUCAS Foundation works to eradicate law enforcement suicide and Brian currently serves as the foundation’s President/CEO.

Brian lives in the suburbs south of Detroit with his wife of 33 years, Marie, and his son Evan. When not working, he spends time with his family, his dogs and loves the outdoors. You can find Brian and The LUCAS Foundation on LinkedIn and all the social media sites.

Born and raised in South Florida, Officer Daniel Herrera, M.S.Ed., served his community as an elementary school teacher for five years before starting a career in law enforcement in 2011. He worked in Road Patrol and later as a Detective, before becoming a School Resource Officer in 2017, a role he continues to hold today. His additional responsibilities include serving as a Team Leader on his agency’s

Crisis/Hostage Negotiation Team, General Instructor, and Crisis Intervention Officer. Holding multiple advanced training certifications, including national certifications as both a Tactical Medical Instructor and an Active Threat Instructor, Officer Herrera is passionate about training fellow officers, as well as teachers and school staff, on how to handle emergency situations effectively. He is also deeply committed to enhancing school safety through age-appropriate training for students. In addition, since

2017, Officer Herrera has organized an annual “Ballin’ for Unity” basketball game to foster community-police relations. Beyond his professional roles, he is a devoted family man (married 18 years with three children), a Jiu Jitsu practitioner, a motorcycle enthusiast, and a

former little league baseball coach of 10 years.

Guardian angels are all around us and very often they show up when we need them the most. On this episode, we bring back our good friend Keith Shibley as he brings in his guardian angel Jennifer May.  Jennifer May is a twenty-three year veteran of law enforcement. She recently retired in December 2024 as a Senior Executive Service member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Counterintelligence Division. Jennifer began her law enforcement career in 2001, graduating from the FBI Academy in May 2002 and was first assigned to the New York Field Office’s White Collar Crime Branch where she investigated notable securities fraud cases including the Bernie Madoff, multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme.

In 2009, Jennifer was promoted to FBI Headquarters and served as a Supervisory Special Agent in the Counterterrorism Division where she spearheaded the creation, development and launch of the FBI’s first automated watchlisting database. In 2012, she was detailed to the Central Intelligence Agency and served as the FBI’s representative to assist in interagency operations targeting terrorist activity and threat streams identified on extremist web forums.

Keith Shibley is a twenty-three-year veteran of law enforcement. He is currently a K-9 handler at Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Departments Explosive Dog Detection Unit. In 2010 Keith became a Detective and was assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in Washington D.C. While at the FBI Keith worked on domestic and international terrorism cases. In 2018 Keith requested to take time off to get help for a substance abuse problem. Since 2020, Keith has been sharing his intimate story of trauma starting at childhood and going through his law enforcement career highlighting several major incidents that affected him in a negative way.

Jonathan Daige is an Army veteran with two deployments to Iraq. A retired Worcester Police officer of 18 years and served 8 years on the SWAT Team as a sniper. 

Within that time he has battled testicular cancer that spread all over his body from his chest to his brain multiple times. After cycling to heal he began a nonprofit Thin Blue Ride that helps military veterans, first responders and their families when battling cancer. 

Since 2017 Thin Blue Ride has raised over $800,000 for families across the country. 

JD now medically retired has been battling Leukemia for several years and is continuing to help cancer warriors whenever he can.

Dr. Novitskie's career has spanned two decades largely within clinical-forensic and outpatient settings. She has provided assessment and clinical care to clients across the lifespan, ranging from early childhood to those faced with end-of-life difficulties. Dr. Novitskie has extensive training and experience in conducting clinical and forensic mental health evaluations, focused on addressing various psycho-legal issues. She has specialty training in clinical, diagnostic, and sexual/violence risk assessments with both adult and juvenile offenders.  At the county, state, and federal levels, Dr. Novitskie provides psychological evaluations and testimony for the courts, utilizing her training and hands-on assessment experience in various civil and criminal matters.

Dr. Novitskie conducts evaluations in a range of criminal and civil matters, including Pre-Employment & Fitness-for-Duty (FTD), Diagnostic/Need for Treatment Evaluations (NFT), and Violence, Sexual, and Fire-setting Risk Assessments.

Adam Blevins is a former Virginia State Trooper and currently serves as the Operations Director for the Virginia Law Enforcement Assistance Program (VALEAP), where he leads statewide efforts in peer support, trauma response, and first responder wellness. He is also an auxiliary police officer with the Saltville Police Department and a licensed resident in counseling at Rivers of Hope Counseling, LLC, where he provides therapy with a focus on trauma, grief, and emotional resilience. Adam is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and holds professional credentials in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Liberty University, where he is also currently pursuing his PhD in Trauma-Informed Care. As both a public safety professional and a mental health provider, Adam brings a unique “boots on the ground” perspective to conversations around suffering, identity, and healing. He is also the author of Welcome to the S.H.I.F.T. Show™: How to Love Yourself in a World That Won’t, a brutally honest, deeply human book designed for anyone who’s tired of barely hanging on and ready to start showing up for themselves. The book will be available on May 13 th , 2025.

Stephanie Niemiec was raised in Fairfield, NJ. Stephanie graduated from West Essex High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and Thomas Edison State University. Her personal journey has been shaped by significant loss, having experienced the deaths of several close family members from a young age. These experiences have profoundly influenced her commitment to emergency medicine and her resilience in the face of trauma.

Stephanie is a dedicated Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) Paramedic and clinical educator with over 25 years of experience in prehospital medicine. She beganher career in 1996 as an EMT with Cedar Grove Ambulance & Rescue Squad and advanced her training at Union County College’s paramedic program in 1999. By 2000, Her passion for teaching emerged in 2003 when she became a paramedic instructor at Union County College. She later advanced to Clinical Coordinator for Bergen Community College’s Paramedic Science Program.

Stephanie is the proud mother of a 20-year-old autistic daughter, a thriving college music major who aspires to play clarinet in a traveling orchestra and teach music to special needs students. Stephanie is also the former spouse of a police officer, with whom she maintains a strong friendship. She openly reflects on the challenges faced by families of public servants, emphasizing the need for greater professional and community support. She believes the lack of professional and religious support are the reasons that contributed to the destruction of their marriage

Stephanie’s career has been marked by her ability to navigate the aftermath of tragedy, both personally and professionally. Since the age of 15, she has endured the loss of close relatives and, throughout her 25 years in the field, has responded to countless critical incidents-including deaths, shootings, stabbings, hangings, drownings, motor vehicle collisions, domestic violence, and child abuse. These experiences have reinforced her dedication to compassionate care and her commitment to preparing the next generation of paramedics
