What are GP Respiratory Clinics?

Up to 100 GP Respiratory Clinics have been established across Australia to provide dedicated clinical assessment services to people with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. 3 Respiratory Clinics have been established in the ACT, which compliment existing ACT Respiratory Assessment Clinics established  by the ACT Government. This initiative will reduce the risk of further transmission of COVID-19, help to optimise the use of available stock of Personal Protective Equipment (or PPE), and help reduce the pressure on hospital emergency departments. Respiratory Clinics, despite being located within already established general practices, will be separated from the main practice, ensuring significant infection control precautions.

Who can be tested?

A person will be eligible for testing if they have one of the following criteria:

- Fever, such as temperatures of 38 degrees or higher, measured with a thermometer; or  

- Respiratory infection, such as a cough, sore throat or shortness of breath; or

- Recent history of chills or night sweats; or

- Recent history of contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19.

How does your patient get tested?

Before arranging to be assessed at a Respiratory Clinic, your patients should take the following steps:

- If they are experiencing symptoms it is important to limit their exposure to other people by self-isolating themselves at home; and

- Contact their GP for a telehealth assessment. They should not visit their GP without calling ahead. Many GPs are happy to test and manage their regular patients so you, as their usual GP should be their first contact.

If your practice is not providing COVID-19 tests, your patient can:

- Make an appointment for assessment and testing at a GP Respiratory Clinic; or

- Visit an ACT Respiratory Assessment Clinic.

Getting the results

If your patient is tested for COVID-19, they must self-isolate at home until they receive a negative result.  

At both the GP Respiratory Clinic and the ACT Respiratory Assessment Clinics your patients will have the opportunity to nominate you as their usual GP to receive a copy of the assessment and test. If the patient tests negative, the Respiratory Clinic will notify the patient of the negative result and then be handed back to their usual GP for ongoing support and management. If the patient tests positive, the testing laboratory will notify both ACT Health Protection Service and the Respiratory Clinic. ACT Health Protection Service will then contact the patient to conduct contact tracing and to answer the patient’s questions about what a positive diagnosis would mean for them. In addition, the Respiratory Clinic will also contact the patient to discuss this diagnosis and to facilitate their handover back to their usual GP. The patient’s nominated usual GP will then receive a copy of the results through the Respiratory Clinic’s usual methods.
