Unpacking The Word Ep. 11: 'Awareness is Bliss'

In this week's episode, Barrett and Luna tackle the recent Supreme Court rulings that declared affirmative action and student loan forgiveness unconstitutional. The court also ruled that a website designer has the right to refuse to create websites for same-sex couples, a decision that comes half a decade after the court ruled that a cake shop owner had a first amendment right to refuse to bake cakes for LGBTQ+ customers. Barrett and Luna unpack the corruption of the court and discuss the conservative tilt that the court has now.

The rulings are upsetting and show a bleak future, but Barrett says it's better for people to be informed rather than ignorant, coining this week's phrase, "Awareness is bliss."

Recorded on 7/7/2023.

Barrett and Luna tackle the difference between being nice and being kind in this week's episode.
Unpacking The Word Ep. 8: Feelings vs. Philosophy

In Episode 8, Barrett and Luna tackle good parenting. They discuss what it means to be sustainable and nurturing as a parent. It starts with having a philosophy to do good things. Barrett gets into this idea by discussing his young son’s newfound obsession with cheese. Yes, you read that right. Barrett also reframes the idea that having a child is a burden on the parent. Instead, he says parenting is a collaboration with children, not a right to exercise power or control over them.

Recorded on 5/12/2023. <itunes:summary>In this episode, Barrett and Luna tackle the tough topic of gun violence again in the wake of the shootings of Ralph Yarl and Kaylin Gillis. They unpack how ethnocide and the delusions of American freedom encourage this violence. The answer, Barrett says, is to protect existence, or human life, instead of delusions bred from the ethnocidal history of this country.

<itunes:summary>Barrett and Luna have another somber discussion about the devastating gun violence affecting the country in this week’s episode of Unpacking The Word. They unpack the warped understanding of freedom in America that has allowed for this violence to keep happening. Tennessee is the backdrop for this episode as Barrett and Luna talk about the horrific shooting at Covenant School in Nashville and the baseless dismissal of two Black lawmakers by state conservatives after they protested the violence.

Since the recording of the podcast, both Rep. Justin J. Pearson of Memphis and Rep. Justin Jones of Nashville have been reinstated to the Tennessee House.

On this episode, Bakari and Barrett discuss the profound importance of the French phrase "l'appel du vide," which means "the call of the void." It is that strange voice in your head catastrophically asks you jump of a cliff or swerve off the road. It makes realize that we all have voices in our heads that we must ignore.

Co-hosts, Scott and Barrett, continue their conversation of Ice Cube's "The Predator" album from the first episode of the Hip Hop Dialectic. This time, Ice Cube's key song, "It Was a Good Day", is at the forefront of their analysis. Using eǔtopia as the main framework for their discussion, the dissection of Ice Cube's "good day" is an example of how ethnocidal society is so intertwined with day-to-day life in the United States.
